- Priyanka Chopra is in the news for her comeback in Bollywood. How she kept doing new things in her career, in her own words…
I did high school in America, lived there with my aunt and uncle. She returned to India at the age of 16 and came to a small town, Bareilly. My brother was then 10 years old and had become accustomed to the freedom of living alone without an elder sister at home. As soon as I arrived, I took her room. He made a plan to get his room back. Even today I feel that my career started because of my brother. He saw the advertisement of Miss India in a magazine and said to my mother – She is beautiful, we should send her pictures here. My mother sent my pictures. The photos were chosen and that’s how it began. I didn’t take it seriously, because I had never been a “pageant girl” and had no idea what that meant. I only did it because I wanted to avoid exams and was very behind in my studies at the time. Never went to acting school. But when I won Miss World, I started getting many offers from the film world, because after becoming Miss World, I think the producers felt that it was beneficial to cast Miss World in the film. There will be a deal, so I will get a chance I didn’t even know what it was like to be in a movie with a veteran actor, but I hated losing. I had to learn quickly, otherwise I had to learn how to speak my lines, how to stay on my mark, it was very intimidating in the beginning. It was like pushing you into deep water and now You have to sink or swim. I decided to swim. I made many changes in my career. Did things that I didn’t know before. Played such characters which I had no experience of playing. I understood early in my career that if you are a student of life and don’t rest on your past experiences, you will always move forward. I had decided from the very beginning that whatever I do, I will be the best in it. The only way to be the best is preparation. Learning is important for preparation. I have always been learning in my career.
Always being prepared can prove helpful I move ahead without fear. What is the Worst That Could Happen? You fail, pick yourself up, then do something new. I never put all my bets on one thing. Always know that my profession is unstable. I don’t know where my next salary will come from. Everything depends on the next opportunity. It is a process of continuous hard work and running. We have to be prepared for this, this will prove helpful. (Actor-producer Priyanka Chopra in a 2021 podcast)
