Explosive Eruption of Mount Kanlaon Prompts Evacuation

The Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island in the Philippines erupted on Tuesday, April 8, accompanied by 14 volcanic earthquakesprompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to issue a Level Three Alert.

Under a Level Three Alert, residents within a six-kilometer radius of the volcano’s summit are recommended to evacuate.

According PHIVOLCS, smoke from the volcano reached heights of 4,000 meters and ashfall was expected At the Nearby Cities of Barangays Cubay, San Miguel, and La Granja, and la Carlota.
