Edappally Junction, which turned notorious during the past decade for serpentine traffic snarls, would be flanked by a pair of flyovers on either side by the end of the year, if everything goes as planned.

According to the National Highway Authority of India’s plan, vehicles waiting to cross the bottlenecked junction will be diverted through the underpasses of the two flyovers, whose construction began earlier this year on the northern and southern sides of the junction. This, in turn, is expected to bring about a seamless flow of vehicles through the junction by reducing reliance on traffic signals, it is learnt.

Affirming that the pair of flyovers would be ready by year-end, official sources said the work had gained considerable progress on the flyover planned on the northern side of the junction, on the way to Varapuzha, while drains and allied infrastructure were being built on the southern side that leads to Vyttila. The 650-metre-long structures would have underpasses that are 50 m wide to cater to vehicles moving in multiple lanes.

Once the structures are ready, only vehicles from Varapuzha to Vyttila will be permitted to cross over directly from the junction, while motorists using the existing flyover in the east-west direction (along NH 544) can continue to do so through the junction where NH 66 intersects NH 544.

The flyovers that would end near Oberon Mall on the southern side of Edappally Junction and in front of LuLu Group office located on the northern side of the junction, would take off approximately 700 metres away from the junction.
