Russia-Ukraine War: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on a phone with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday (August 21). During this time the focus on the solution of conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. PM Modi described this conversation as ‘very good’. Macron was among the European leaders present with him during the conversation of US President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodimir Jailonsci this week.
PM Modi said in a post on the social media platform X about the conversation, “My friend President Macron had a very good conversation. Exchanged views on the efforts of peaceful solutions of conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia.”
He added, “We reiterated the commitment to further strengthen the India-France strategic partnership.” A few days before meeting Jailonsky, Trump held a summit on the Ukraine conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the two leaders discussed the efforts of peaceful solutions to the ongoing struggles in Russia-Ukraine and West Asia region. President Macron shared information about recent meetings with leaders of Europe, America and Ukraine in Washington.
He also expressed his views on Gaza’s current situation during a conversation with PM Modi. On this, Prime Minister Modi reiterated the peaceful solution of struggles and the constant support of India to restore peace and stability as soon as possible.
The two leaders also discussed ways to further strengthen the India-France strategic partnership. He reviewed the progress of bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, defense, civil nuclear cooperation, technology and energy and reiterated his commitment to celebrate 2026 as a ‘year of innovation’.

In addition, the French President expressed his support for the early conclusion of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the India-European Union. The two leaders agreed to maintain contact on mutual issues. After the Alaska summit, Russian President Putin also spoke to Prime Minister Modi over the phone. During this, he shared his opinion about his meeting with Trump.
