HC stays conviction of vax scientist for wife's suicide; cites 'national interest'; allows returns to duty

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand HC has suspended the conviction and five-year rigorous imprisonment of a vaccine scientist found guilty of abetment to suicide following the death of his wife in 2015.Justice Ravindra Maithani granted the relief to Dr Akash Yadav during the pendency of his appeal, saying his role was “undoubtedly essential for public health and national interest” and his conviction had rendered him ineligible to continue contributing to vaccine programmes.Yadav, a vaccinologist with a PhD in biotechnology from IIT-Kgp, had been working as a senior manager at Indian Immunologicals Limited, a PSU that makes human and veterinary vaccines and plays a critical role in national immunisation efforts. tnnCourt allows scientist to resume duties at IIL Yadav was convicted by a sessions court under IPC section 306 for abetment to suicide but was acquitted under section 304-B (dowry death) and the Dowry Prohibition Act.He married on May 7, 2015. His wife, who was employed at Pantnagar University, was taken to her maternal home by her brother on July 4, 2015, while Yadav was working in Hyderabad. She resumed her duties but died by suicide on Dec 14, 2015. In her suicide note, she stated that her husband would be responsible for her death. Yadav was arrested on May 11, 2017, and after spending more than three months in jail, he got bail on Aug 28. On Jan 21 this year, the sessions judge of Rudrapur sentenced him to five-year RI and a fine of Rs 20,000 under Section 306.After being granted bail, Yadav filed an interim application under section 389(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, seeking suspension of his conviction. He submitted that because of the conviction, he had become disqualified from working with Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL) and was unable to resume his scientific duties. His counsel argued that the case met the criteria for exceptional circumstances, as the conviction had a direct impact on “work of national importance.”Justice Maithani noted that an appellate court can suspend a conviction if failure to do so would result in injustice or irreversible consequences. He cited the Supreme Court rulings in Navjot Singh Sidhu vs State of Punjab (2007) and Rama Narang vs Ramesh Narang (1995) and said that courts must examine whether maintaining the conviction would unfairly affect a person’s professional standing or public interest responsibilities. The bench observed, “This was a greater issue of public health and national interest. In light of the afore-stated reasons, the court was of the view that this was a fit case in which the order of conviction as well as execution of sentence, appealed against, should be suspended.”The high court suspended both the conviction and sentence during the appeal’s pendency, allowing Yadav to resume his duties at IIL.

'Settled a war a month': Trump again takes credit for India-Pakistan ceasefire; claims 'ending 5 wars' globally

NEW DELHI: US President Donald Trump once again on Sunday repeated his claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, along with ending several other global conflicts. In post on Truth Social, Trump responded to radio host and author Charlamagne Tha God saying the host knew “nothing” about his achievements, including “just ending 5 Wars, including a 31 year bloodbath between Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, where Seven Million people have died, and there was no end in sight.”Trump added, “He didn’t know that, or India and Pakistan or, wiping out Iran’s nuclear capabilities, or closing the horrendous open Border, or creating the greatest economy.”Speaking to Newsmax a day earlier, Trump claimed to have “settled a lot of wars,” including India and Pakistan.“One of the wars—India, Pakistan, nuclear,” he said. He also cited conflicts in Thailand and Cambodia, and Congo and Rwanda, saying many were resolved through trade pressure, reported PTI.“I said ‘listen, you guys are going to fight. You can fight all you want. I mean, just fight your hearts out. But we’re not doing a trade deal’. All of a sudden they end up not doing a war.”Trump added, “I settled a lot of wars. I think I settled averaging about a war a month. But, you know, we’re saving millions of lives.”Last week, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt supported Trump’s claim, saying he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. “Trump has now ended conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia,” she said at a briefing. She claimed Trump has “brokered, on average, about one peace deal or ceasefire per month” in his six months in office.Since May 10, Trump has claimed multiple times that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire after US-mediated talks. However, officials have firmly denied any US involvement in the recent ceasefire. Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Parliament that no foreign leader urged India to stop Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that killed 26 people.External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said there was “no third-party intervention” and dismissed any link between the ceasefire and trade. “Prime Minister Modi and Trump did not have any phone calls between April 22, when the Pahalgam terror attack took place, and June 16,” Jaishankar said in the Rajya Sabha as quoted by PTI.

Gurgaon horror: Wife plots husband’s murder with lover, 3 others; all arrested

NEW DELHI: Police in Gurugram have arrested five people, including a woman and her neighbour, for allegedly murdering her husband and concealing his body. The victim, Vikram (37), was a resident of Dundahera village and originally hailed from Nawada in Bihar. His wife, Soni Devi (35), was reportedly in a relationship with the main accused, her neighbour Ravindra (34).According to police, during questioning, Vikram’s wife Soni Devi confessed that she and the main accused, her neighbour Ravinder (34), conspired to kill her husband after her daughter discovered an obscene video of them on Ravinder’s phone and informed Vikram. Investigators said the duo researched murder methods online before executing the plan.Soni Devi had initially filed a missing complaint for her husband at Udyog Vihar police station on July 28. She filed another complaint on July 31 alleging that Ravindra had raped her in March while her husband was away for work. She claimed that Ravindra had made a video of the incident and threatened that if she told anyone about it, he would make the clip public.Following the initial investigation, police arrested Ravindra, who allegedly confessed to murdering Vikram. Two other men, Manish (19) and Fariyaad (20) were also taken into custody for reportedly assisting in the crime. All three were remanded to five days’ police custody on Saturday.Additionally, Ravindra’s uncle, Santarpal (60), was arrested the same day for helping bury Vikram’s body. He, too, was sent to five days’ custody on Sunday. Soni Devi, meanwhile, has been sent to judicial remand. It was during interrogation when Ravindra claimed that he and the woman had been in a relationship, according to a police spokesperson.During questioning, Ravindra told police that on July 26, he and his accomplices forcibly pulled Vikram into a car while he was returning home from work. They strangled him with a rope and later buried his body near Mohammadpur Jharsa village. Based on Ravindra’s disclosure, the body was recovered from the burial site.Police said Soni Devi admitted to having been in a relationship with Ravindra for about a year. She revealed that Ravindra had recorded an obscene video of them, which her daughter accidentally found on his phone and later informed Vikram.Police said both Ravindra and Soni Devi had actively researched online to plan the murder. “Both the accused, Ravindra and Soni Devi, watched various methods on the Internet and YouTube to kill Vikram and dispose of the body after the murder,” said a police spokesperson. As part of the plan, Ravindra approached his uncle, Santarpal, who looks after cattle in Mohammadpur Jharsa village.”Ravindra, along with his friends, then killed Vikram and his uncle helped him to bury the body in a pit which was already dug by Santarpal on Ravindra’s instructions,” the official added.Investigators also confirmed that Soni Devi remained in regular contact with Ravindra by phone during this entire episode. “In order to mislead the police, she first filed a missing report of her husband on July 28, while the woman knew that her husband had been murdered on July 26 and his body had been buried. We are questioning the accused,” the spokesperson said.

‘Detonate It At Once’: Rajnath Singh Dares Rahul Gandhi Over ‘Atom Bomb’ Vote Theft Claim

“Rahul Gandhi is an anti-India person. He is only with Bangladeshi and Pakistani Muslims. He is not with Indian Hindus, not even with Indian Muslims. Rahul Gandhi is an anti-national personality,” Sarma alleged. He did not provide any specific reasons for labelling Rahul Gandhi, the current Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, as anti-national.Just days before, Rahul Gandhi had criticized CM Sarma during his visit to Guwahati. Speaking at a party event in Chaygaon, Gandhi accused the Assam chief minister of acting like a ‘king’ and predicted that he would eventually end up in jail due to corruption charges. “He thinks he is a ‘raja’, but he will not be in power for long. He will end up in jail — not because Congress wants it, but because the people of Assam will send him there for corruption.”In response, Sarma dismissed the allegations with a strong reply with words and a hand gesture “Thenga” during a late-night press briefing. He stated that unlike Gandhi, he is a true son of Assam, raised by its soil and people. He accused the Congress of being stuck in outdated thinking and added, “The joke is on him.”

Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel protesters marched across Sydney’s Harbour Bridge on Sunday, calling on international community for a larger aid access to Gaza and sanctions against Israel, according to the several viral clips on social media. The demonstration in Australia’s largest city came just days after a government minister signaled that Australia may recognize a Palestinian state in the future, and amid growing international criticism of Israel over worsening famine-like situation in Gaza.Organized by the Palestine action group Sydney, the protest accused Israel of committing genocide in its conflict with Hamas, an allegation Israel denies. The group outlined its demands on Facebook before the march, unrestricted humanitarian aid to Gaza, “immediate Israeli ceasefire and withdrawal” and the imposition of sanctions and an arms embargo on Israel, reported news outlet The Times of Israel. The protest, titled the “March for Humanity,” made no mention of Hamas or the 50 Israeli hostages still held in Gaza in its list of demands shared on Facebook. Some participants carried pots and pans to represent the widespread hunger in the Gaza Strip. Earlier the protest got a green signal from the Australian supreme court, after the New South Wales police and the state’s premier had tried to block the march on Sydney harbour bridge citing “safety hazards and transport disruptions,” in what organisers called a “historic decision,” according to the news outlet.Viral clips on social media show the protesters ranging from from the elderly to families with young children. Among demonstrators were WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and former Australian foreign minister Bob Carr, as reported by several media reports.New South Wales police estimated the crowd at up to 90,000, well above expectations. However, Palestine action group Sydney claimed on Facebook that the turnout may have reached 300,000.“Shame shame Israel, shame shame USA,” the crowds chanted. “What do we want? Ceasefire. When do we want it? Now,” crowds can be heard chanting in the viral posts.

Harry Brook has been England’s most dangerous presence at the crease so far on Day 4 of the fifth and final Test, pushing India onto the back foot with his aggressive approach. But one moment in particular summed up the dramatic swings in this match and left India pacer Prasidh Krishna red-faced. In the 35th over of England’s chase, Brook top-edged a pull shot off Prasidh and the ball went high into the air. Mohammed Siraj at long leg took the catch cleanly, prompting Prasidh to break into celebration. The pacer stretched his arms out wide in triumph, walking in front of Brook as if the contest had turned. However, he had missed one crucial detail. Siraj, in the act of completing the catch, had taken a step back and touched the boundary cushions with his foot and then crossed it altogether. That meant it wasn’t a wicket, but rather, six runs. Brook, fully aware of the situation, calmly walked back to the crease, while Prasidh’s face quickly turned to one of disappointment. His celebration abruptly ended as he realised what had happened. Siraj, too, had his hands on his head in disbelief, visibly frustrated at his misjudgment. However, things remained jovial between Siraj and Prasidh as the two shared an embrace at lunch. The moment summed up a difficult phase for India, as Brook continued to chip away at the target. England need a win to seal the series 3-1, while India are fighting to level it 2-2.

Poll

Who do you think will win the fifth Test match?

For now, Brook remains, and Prasidh left thinking about what could have been. At lunch, England are 164/3 in 38 overs.
