35km from Silkyara, water leak from tunnel spooks villages

DEHRADUN: In the shadow of last month’s tunnel collapse in Silkyara town, anxiety is palpable in villages near धारसु town, Uttarkashijust 35km from the rescue site. Residents of villages nearby are concerned over the increasing leakage from a 16-km inlet tunnel that supplies water from the Bhagirathi river into the Joshiyara barrage and then onto the Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited’s (UJVNL) Maneri Bhali-2 power plant.

The leak, on for two years now, has “surged”, prompting concerns of an impending disaster. Talking to TOI, Surendra Pal Singh, the head of Mehergaon village, said, “Water coming out of cracks in the tunnel has damaged our agricultural land.” Singh said that experts sent by UJVNL had taken some measures but the leakage has not stopped. “Though the leakage problem first arose in 2008 and was then repaired, it resurfaced with greater intensity in November 2021. The trickle has in recent times turned into a rivulet. We fear that the water might impact the soil beneath the mountain, leading to a potential calamity akin to Joshimath (which had reported large-scale land subsidence last year). We hope that it is repaired soon so as to avoid a similar situation.”

Congress: From jail mantri to inmate in 5 min: Amit Shah recalls how Congress framed him

RAJKOT: “Five minutes ago I was the jails ministerand in the next five minutes, I was an inmate.” That’s how Union home minister Amit Shah recalled on Saturday his three months of incarceration in 2010 when the CBI arrested him in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case.
The unusual candour generated surprise and amusement in the audience as Shah recollected “those difficult times” while speaking at the birth centenary of eminent lawyer and former law and justice minister Divyakant Nanavati in Junagadh.
Addressing the function organised by the Rupayatan Trust, the senior BJP leader hailed the professionalism of Nanavati’s son Nirupam, also a renowned criminal lawyer who fought his case despite the family’s long political affiliation with Congress.
“Congress framed me and the CBI lodged a case. My friends and I were pondering who to appoint as my lawyer. So, obviously Nirupam bhai’s name came up. But everyone, including me, was sceptical if he would take up the case considering the family’s Congress background. But I thought, ‘What’s the harm in asking him?’ Much to my surprise, he readily agreed. He not only took up my case but fought till the Supreme Court and helped me get discharged,” the home minister recalled. Shah was discharged in December 2014.
“When I asked him (Nirupam) the reason, he said he had friends in Congress and he knew they had framed me. There can’t be a bigger example of professionalism than this,” he added.
The function was organised to highlight Nanavati’s work for the development of Junagadh and nearby areas. A book commemorating Nanavati’s life was also launched at the event.

PM meets Qatar emir, officials mum on ex-Navy men's issue | India News

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Qatar Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on the sidelines of the CO climate summit in the UAE on Friday, in the first high-level contact between the two countries since a Qatar court awarded death sentence to eight Indian Navy veterans in October this year on spying charges.
While Indian officials were tight-lipped on whether Modi specifically raised the issue concerning the navy veterans, who were held by Qatar intelligence authorities on charges of spying for Israel, the PMsaid in a tweet that he discussed the well-being of the Indian community in Qatar.”On the sidelines of the CO summit in Dubai yesterday, had the opportunity to meet theEmir of Qatar. We had a good conversation on the potential of bilateral partnership and the well-being of the Indian community in Qatar,” said Modi on X, a day after the meeting. There was no formal readout of the conversation by the government.
Sources declined to comment on whether the issue of the retired navy personnel was raised, saying the two leaders were alone when they spoke on the sidelines of the opening ceremony.
In fact, there was no formal bilateral meeting between the two leaders. Photographs from the summit on Friday showed them together on the margins of the opening ceremony. On Saturday, however, Modi tweeted another photograph which showed them holding hands and talking to each other, saying that he had a good conversation with the Emir, who is known to pardon prisoners during the holy month of Ramadan. The Emir had visited India in 2015 and Modi had paid a return visit to Doha next year.
India has been raising the issue with Qatar diplomatically and intelligence authorities have also brought it up with their counterparts in the Gulf country. A higher court is currently listening to India’s appeal against the verdict.
The Indian government, however, has been careful enough to not talk about these efforts in the public because of the sensitive nature of the case and also the bilateral relationship. India has been looking to enhance its security and defence partnership with Qatar, a country that is also home to 800,000 Indian nationals.

With positive word of mouth, the film must continue to hold well on Sunday and the coming days ahead. But again, the buzz around ‘Animal’ is just increasing by the day, and the controversies on social media surrounding the film is acting as negative publicity and almost adding to the film’s collections further due to curiousity among the audience.

India & China skip renewable power pledge, 118 nations sign | India News

DUBAI: India and China, two large economies and among the two top coal consumers, on Saturday stayed away from a pledge taken by 118 nations on the sidelines of CO summit to work towards trebling the global renewable energy generation capacity to at least 11,000 GW and doubling the average annual rate of energy efficiency by 2030.
The abstention was in keeping with the stance of India which, despite having made rapid strides in boosting its non-fossil fuel energy generation capacity including solar, wind and hydel, has been loath to bind itself to commitments on massively cutting its reliance on coal-fired power plants- the mainstay of its generating electricity, at a time when demand is rapidly rising.
It has maintained that it would not be “pressured” into reducing the use of coal as it does not want to compromise on the availability of power to fuel its economic growth, and has kept the leeway for continued use of coal at least until 2030 even in the G-20 Declaration which prioritised de-addiction to coal. The stand here put it at odds with the emerging consensus for moving away from fossil fuel and in the company of China well as oil-producers Saudi Arabia, Russia and Iran.
However, sources said while India remains committed to substantially increase its non-fossil power capacity by 2030, in line with the climate action pledge under the Paris Agreement, it could not be party to any commitment which could hurt its priority to lift millions out of poverty by boosting development.
They also said that the principled stand should not be confused with rigidity as India can be part of the deal later, after negotiating its terms, as the agreement has a clear reference to the circumstances in individual countries and their ability to negotiate. “It has been done outside the COP negotiation process.

NEW DELHI: All eyes are on the outcome of the fiercely contested electoral battle in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana – which have been dubbed as the semi-finals ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next year.
The counting of votes in the 4 states will start today at 8am and the Election Commission has ensured that all arrangements are in place for the D-day. Mizoram, which also voted in this round of assembly elections, will have to wait till December 4 for the results as the Election Commission has extended counting in the state by a day.
Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh witnessed a classic BJP vs Congress clash with both parties going all out to gain a foothold in the Hindi heartland states to ensure they get a headstart for the Lok Sabha polls.

Assembly Election Exit Poll Results: BJP leads in MP & Rajasthan, Congress holds strong in Chhattisgarh & Telangana

In Telangana, the BJP and Congress gave a tough contest to the ruling TRS, which contested hard for a consecutive third term in the state.
Mizoram saw a three-way contest between the ruling MNF, Congress, and the ZPM.
Voting was held in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram on different dates in November. Voting was held in a single phase in all the states, except Chhattisgarh, which conducted polling in two phases.
Stakes high for BJP, Congress
The stakes are very high for the two national parties since the results in the five states will set the tone for the Lok Sabha election next year.
The elections are crucial for Congress since it is looking to retain power in both Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and wrest control of Madhya Pradesh from the rival BJP.
Meanwhile, the BJP is hoping to hold on to its fort in Madhya Pradesh and return to power in the other two states. It is also hoping to gain some ground in Telangana, where TRS has been the dominant party for the last decade.
In Mizoram, both Congress and ZPM are looking to give a tough fight to the ruling MNF, which stormed to power in the 2018 elections.
What did the exit polls predict?
The Congress and the BJP are likely to share the honors in this round of crucial assembly elections, with the exit polls predicting the grand old party in Telangana and Chhattisgarh while the saffron party may win in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP has a clear edge over the Congress. According to the poll of exit polls, the BJP may win 124 seats while the Congress could win 103 seats.
In Chhattisgarh, the Congress is ahead in a cliffhanger contest with the poll of polls predicting 50 seats for the grand old party while the BJP may win 38.
In Rajasthan, exit polls predict the BJP ahead of the ruling Congress. The BJP is predicted to win 104 seats while the Congress could win 85. If these numbers prove true, Ashok Gehlot could be on his way out.
Telangana could see the Congress getting close to forming a government for the first time in the state. The polls of exit polls predict 60 seats for the Congress while the BRS could win 48. The BJP may win 5, and the AIMIM 6.
Counting of votes at 8 am
Starting with postal ballots, counting will commence at 8 am amid tight security for 230 seats in Madhya Pradesh, 90 seats in Chhattisgarh, 119 seats in Telangana, and 199 seats in Rajasthan as polling on one seat in the desert state was put off due to the death of a candidate.

A three-tier security arrangement has been put in place, and only people holding valid passes will be allowed to enter the counting centers, election officials said.
2018 assembly elections
In the last assembly elections, the Congress had won 114 seats, and the BJP was close behind with 109 seats in Madhya Pradesh. The Congress formed the government under Kamal Nath with the help of smaller parties and independents. However, a rebellion led by Jyotiraditya Scindia derailed the Congress government, and the BJP returned to power with the help of rebel Congress leaders.
In Chhattisgarh, the Congress won the 2018 assembly elections with a thumping majority, bagging 68 out of the 90 assembly seats. The BJP could manage to win only 15 after three terms of power in the state.
In the 2018 assembly elections in Rajasthan, the Congress won 99 seats while the BJP won 73. Ashok Gehlot became the chief minister with the support of BSP MLAs and independents.
In the last assembly elections in 2018, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi won a landslide, bagging 88 seats out of 119. The Congress could win only 19, and the BJP 1. The AIMIM, which won 7 seats in 2018, is contesting these elections in alliance with the TRS, which is now known as the Bharat Rashtra Samithi.Watch Election results 2023: Will Congress’ ‘Lehar’ sweep BJP’s stronghold in Madhya Pradesh?

Fans are concerned as Abhishek Bachchan spotted without wedding ring in latest photos | Hindi Movie News

Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are one of the best couples of B-town. Fans also love them for always being so real as they prefer to keep their their relationship private more often than not. It’s been 16 years since the duo tied the knot and still look so in love, every time they’re spotted with their daughter Aaradhya.
But here’s something which has left fans concerned.Abhishek was seen sporting a new look as he recently apperared for a a brand event. His new hair look got a big thumbs up from netizens and the fashion police and people thought he looked very sharp. However, now, fans have noticed that he wasn’t wearing his wedding ring at this particular event. A user dropped a photo of him on Reddit and expressed, “Abhishek isn’t wearing his wedding ring anymore, he’s always worn in in his appearances.”
These speculations have also come from the fact that Aishwarya has been making some solo appearances with Aaradhya, sans Abhishek, a lot lately. However, the internet has this ability to always speculate and blow things out of proportion so, one can’t really trust the internet.
Meanwhile, recently, when Aishwarya was spotted at a social even on her birthday on November 1, she cut the cake but didn’t eat as she was fasting for karwa chauth. It’s been a ritual for years now, that Abhishek also fasts on karwa chauth with Aishwarya.

Abhishek has always also been very appreciative of Aishwarya at all times. In an interview with ETimes, he had credited Aishwarya for bringing up Aaradhya so well and being with her most times, while allowing Abhishek to go to work. He had said, “Aishwarya handled it beautifully that it wasn’t made into a big deal for her that both her grandparents are from the film world and both your parents are from a film world. We didn’t make it into a ‘big thing’. It was very normal. She’s a very normal kid, the credit of that should entirely go to my wife because she allows me to go out and make my films and she takes care of Aaradhya. I’m sure it can’t be easy but she’s just a normal kid and being that, she’s happiest playing, going to school, interacting with her friends. She doesn’t really want to compulsively watch movies, she’s happy doing other things.”
Well, with this kind of bonding, one doesn’t think fans should be worried, but hoping for Abhishek and Aishwarya to make an appearance together real soon to slosh these rumours like King and Queen!
On work front, Abhishek was last seen in ‘Ghoomer‘ which is getting a lot of love as it just released on OTT. The actor is back in the city recently after shooting for Shoojit Sircar‘s next.
