Kamal wilts in face of lotus onslaught

Anti-incumbency faded under the glare of the saffron sun on Sunday as BJP won its fifth term in MP – barring a 15-month Congress blip in between – with a landslide 163 of 230 seats.
This was a statement victory from a party in office for nearly two decades, not just brushing aside perceptions of voter fatigue but also ensuring that the BJP goes into the big one, the Lok Sabha election five months from now, with a swagger.
It’s not as if problems like inflation, crop loss and unemployment among the youth disappeared overnight. But a campaign blitzkrieg led by PM Narendra Modi and strategised by Union home minister Amit Shah, backed by the welfarist and emotional outreach of chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, gave BJP momentum and a connection with voters that Congress failed to match.
Modi front & centre: “MP Ke Mann Mein Modi” began as a slogan. As the assembly polls approached, it became the writing on the wall. On Sunday, it was the reality. BJP’s campaign turned the focus on PM Modi and the 2024 battle, moving attention away from anti-incumbency and corruption charges against the BJP government. The PM addressed 15 rallies between November 4 and 14, nearly half of them in tribal-dominated districts. Shah spoke at 21 rallies. BJP recorded big victories wherever the PM went.
‘Mama’ plays to gallery: “I run a family, not a government,” he declared. “Bhaiyya” to his “ladli behnas” and “Mama” to the rest, Chouhan tugged at MP’s heartstrings. “You will miss me when I am gone,” he said on his home turf Budhni. Elsewhere, he asked, “Shouldn’t I be CM again?” Aware he wasn’t being projected as CM for the first time, he turned it to his advantage. On Sunday, he said, “This tremendous victory shows people have reposed trust in PM Modi, our double-engine government and welfare schemes.”
Schemes hit target: Eight months before the polls, Chouhan announced an allowance of Rs 1,000 a month for his “ladli behnas”. More than 1.3 crore women registered. The first payment was made on June 10, and in September, it was raised to Rs 1,250 to counter Congress’s promise of Rs 1,500 each. Closer to the polls, the scheme evolved to include gas subsidy and housing. The gambit was that not only women beneficiaries, but their voting family members would be moved, too. It proved to be a masterstroke, with a two-percentage point rise in the turnout of women voters. Modi’s formula of 100% saturation of central and state schemes also worked on a large swathe of MP’s population. For a year, the central and state governments focused on the implementation of all welfare schemes. BJP workers were given the job of registering beneficiaries.
Central command: Sensing anti-incumbency, BJP parachuted central leaders into Madhya Pradesh. Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar led the campaign while Shah took care of strategy with two other Union ministers, Bhupendra Yadav and Ashwini Vaishnaw. Shah said the next CM would be decided by the party, which helped unite factions. Shah also fixed a target of 150 seats, with a 51% vote share in every booth. This galvanised the ranks.
Cong overwhelmed: Congress had no answer to Modi’s campaign blitz. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra addressed eight rallies each between October 31 and November 15, but were overwhelmed by Modi and Shah. Modi, Shah and BJP chief JP Nadda repeatedly attacked the opposition alliance INDIA as “anti-Sanatani” and a “ghamandiya gathbandhan” (arrogant alliance). Stalin Jr’s comments on Sanatan Dharma came at the worst possible time for Congress, giving BJP fodder to step up the attack.
Kamal Nath, who led the Congress campaign, cancelled a planned INDIA rally in Bhopal.
‘Jai-Veeru’ misses Scindia: Congress’s campaign was led by Kamal Nath and former CM Digvijaya Singh, referred to as “Jai-Veeru” from Sholay. But the next rung was sorely missed. Congress didn’t have the combative commanders who would take the fight to BJP. Digvijaya’s son Jaivardhan and former minister Jitu Patwari tried, but Congress missed Jyotiraditya Scindia’s aggressive campaign of 2018. Congress also couldn’t match BJP’s ground deployment despite going into the polls with 58,000 booth workers – its highest ever.
It paled before BJP’s 41 lakh registered workers with deep booth-level penetration. “In this contest of democracy, we accept the decision made by voters of Madhya Pradesh. As the opposition party, we will continue to perform our duties. I congratulate BJP and hope that the way people of the state have supported them, they will work to fulfil their expectations,” Nath said on Sunday.

Miss Universe Harnaaz Sandhu's comment on Veer Pahariya's post sparks dating rumours - deets inside

Veer Pahariya is set to make his Bollywood debut with Akshay Kumar’s ‘Sky Force’. The announcement was made a while ago. Since then, the soon-to-be debutant has been in news. Veer had made an appearance at the launch of Jio World Plaza with Miss Universe Harnaaz Sandhuand that sparked rumours of them dating. However, that seemed far from truth as the duo posed very formerly at the red carpet.Infact, they were seen together because Harnaaz is also reportedly making her debut with Veer’s film and they’re co-stars who are starting out together in a movie.
There didn’t seem anything more than that, though, gossip milss do work full time indeed. But now, it has happened yet again. Veer shared some pictures and Harnaaz’s comment on this post has added fuel to these dating rumours. He shared a picture and wrote, “In this society, you’re either a name or a number..”
Harnaaz commented on it and said, “There’s only one king in the jungle,” with a fire emoji.

For those not in the know, Veer was rumoured to be dating Sara Ali Khan. Karan Johar had said on his show that Janhvi Kapoor and Sara were dating two brothers. He hinted at Veer and Shikhar Pahariya. Well, Janhvi and Shikhar seem to have reconciled their relationship as they’ve been making appearances together and Shikhar is also seen bonding with Janhvi’s family. Veer was apparently dating Sara. Both brothers are the maternal grandsons of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde.
Well, now that Veer is making his debut, he’s more in the limelight and this comment from Harnaaz has certainly led to several speculations.

Kamal Nath: Gen next waiting, road ahead for Congress' 'Jai-Veeru' may not be a song | India News

In the realm of Madhya Pradesh politics, Digvijaya Singh and Kamal Nathoften referred to as ‘Jai-Veeru’, find themselves at a crossroads with trouncing casting a shadow over their careers.
The duo, with decades of toil invested in shaping Congress in the heartland, now faces not just a loss of face but the looming prospect of the party seeking alternative leadership. The political veterans – both well into their 70s – currently hold a monopoly over the party in Madhya Pradesh, but the recent defeat may signal the need for a shift towards younger, emerging leaders.
The dream of grooming their sons, Nakul Nath and Jaivardhan, as future leaders within the party hierarchy now faces a formidable challenge. “The absence of a second rung of leaders is a direct consequence of Singh and Nath failing to identify and nurture successors,” said a concerned Congress worker.
The defeat also raises doubts about Singh’s future roles, including a potential exclusion from the Upper House and a ticket for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This setback threatens his stature as a key party figure, particularly in the organisational realm during elections.
For Nath, the defeat marks a significant turn in a political journey that began with Indira Gandhi declaring him “her son”. Winning a Lok Sabha seat nine times and steering a faction-ridden state unit to battle-ready status, Nath’s dedication to Congress is undeniable. However, this defeat has cast a shadow over his future, prompting questions about the next steps in his political career.
Having known the Gandhi-Nehru family since childhood, Nath’s journey has seen him working alongside generations of leaders. Despite facing challenges, he became a Union minister in 1995, held various portfolios at the Centre, and led Congress to victory in the 2018 assembly elections.
Yet, the strained relationship with Jyotiraditya Scindia, which intensified after being selected as chief minister, and the subsequent decimation of Congress in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, painted a challenging landscape. The defection of 22 Congress MLAs, including Scindia, to BJP, and Nath’s resignation in 2020 further added to the political turmoil.
As Congress grapples with these seismic shifts, the fall from grace of these stalwarts poses a challenge for the party’s leaders in Madhya Pradesh. The spotlight now turns towards the emergence of new leadership and the survival of a party reeling from a dearth of grassroot workers. The legacy of Digvijaya Singh’s “lobby” in Madhya Pradesh may fade into oblivion, leaving followers seeking new leaders to rally behind. The road ahead for the Congress in Madhya Pradesh may not be a song, but it promises a tune of change and transition.

Bouquet leads to suspension of Telangana DGP

NEW DELHI: In an unprecedented move, the Election Commission on Sunday suspended Telangana police chief Anjani Kumar hours after he visited state Congress chief Anumula Revanth Reddy with a flower bouquet at the latter’s residence, while the counting for assembly polls was under way. It directed that the next seniormost eligible police officer of Telangana be given charge as the state DGP.
The poll panel also sought explanation from two other officers – Telangana police nodal officer Sanjay Kumar Jain and nodal officer (expenditure) Mahesh M Bhagwat – who had accompanied the DGP to Reddy’s residence around Sunday noon, about the circumstances of their meeting.
EC sources described the DGP’s Sunday noon call on Reddy, a contesting candidate and star campaigner for Congress, in full media glare as a violation of the model code of conduct which is still in force in the state, as well as service conduct rules. “The Telangana DGP opting to meet a contesting candidate out of total 2,290 candidates and the star campaigner of one political party out of 16 political parties in fray, with flower bouquet at his residence when the counting process was still under way, along with two or more senior police officers, is clear indication of mala fide intention of seeking favour,” said an EC functionary.
Sources said Kumar’s suspension, perhaps the first such action to be taken by EC after conclusion of polling, is a stern warning to officials to maintain non-partisanship and impartiality right till the end of the polling process.

Ready for simultaneous polls: Manohar Lal Khattar

HISAR: Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar has backed simultaneous elections to the state assembly and the Lok Sabha, expecting BJP’s victory in three Hindi heartland states on Sunday to have an impact on the 2024 polls.
The assembly polls in Haryana are due in October next year, while the LS polls are expected to be held in April-May.
“The state is ready to conduct Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha elections together if the Election Commission takes a decision,” Khattar said while attributing the BJP’s victory in three states on Sunday to the party’s welfare policies. On the question of an alliance with Jannayak Janta Party, the CM said a decision would be taken at the right time.

BJP's second line of leaders played their part to perfection | India News

NEW DELHI: This round of assembly elections marked the key role played by BJP’s second-rung leaders who successfully executed the poll strategy on the ground and worked diligently at the booth and block levels.
Union ministers Bhupender Yadav and Ashwini Vaishnawin Madhya Pradesh, senior party functionary Om Prakash Mathur and Union minister Mansukh Mandaviya in Chhattisgarh and Union minister Pralhad Joshi along with general secretary Arun Singh in Rajasthan played vital roles in shaping the party’s comprehensive win in three states.Former UP minister Mahendra Singh was another functionary assigned with key constituencies in Rajasthan.
Taking a cue from the defeats in Karnataka and West Bengal, two states the party brass was sure of winning, the strategists deployed functionaries from different backgrounds rather than those with proven track records as poll managers and constantly sought seat-wise feedback from them.
Yadav and Mathur have long experience of steering the party’s campaign in various states while it was the first assignment for Vaishnaw, who stayed away from the limelight and focused on micro management, executing home minister Amit Shah’s directive to garner at least 51% votes for BJP.
State leaders like Nitin Nabin and Ajay Alok from Bihar were also deployed in Chhattisgarh and are said to have acted as the interface between central and state leaders. Recently-appointed general secretary Sunil Bansal, one of the key members of BJP’s think-tank, spent several days in Telangana as the party’s poll observer and played a role in selection of candidates and containing feuds among state leaders.
Sources said winning eight seats in Telangana has raised hopes of further consolidation in the state even as a section of the party believed that it had lost the momentum gained in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls when it won four seats, followed by a respectable finish in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation polls.
Other than top central leaders, UP CM Yogi Adityanath was one of the star campaigners and received good response in all four states. Adityanath addressed several rallies in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh where his law and order plank and the construction of Ram Mandir gave a boost to the party’s double engine slogan.

BJP's poll wins could help government push through key bills in winter session | India News

NEW DELHI: With a 3-1 margin of victory in the latest round of assembly polls, the government may expect less heat in the House during the winter session beginning on Monday, with a demoralised opposition finding it harder to disrupt crucial legislative business. During the session, the spotlight will be on the three criminal justice bills and the bill on appointment of chief election commissioner and election commissioners, both of which have witnessed the opposition striking a discordant note.
Buoyed by its wins, an aggressive BJP will seek to corner the Congress-led opposition right on Monday when a report recommending Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra’s expulsion is expected to be tabled in the Lok Sabha. The opposition, understandably demoralised by the Congress’s being ousted from power in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and its failure to make a mark in Madhya Pradesh, may not manage to whip up the belligerence that would have come with a fresh poll victory against BJP.
“If the opposition disrupts Parliament, it will face worse results than what has come today (Sunday),” parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi told reporters. Two sets of bills set to be taken up for consideration and passage on priority are the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNS) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill (BSB) as well as the CEC and Other ECs (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023.
The BNS Bill, BNSS Bill and BSB – which seek to replace the British-era Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code and the Indian Evidence Act respectively – were introduced in Lok Sabha on the last day of the monsoon session. They were referred soon after to the standing committee, which submitted its report last month with recommendations to revise some of the bills’ provisions. The bill on appointment of CEC and ECs – introduced in the Rajya Sabha during the monsoon session – had invited criticism from the opposition as it seeks appointment of the CEC and election commissioners by a selection panel, as directed by the Supreme Court, but with a composition different from what the court had suggested, in that it keeps out the Chief Justice of India.
Opposition leaders have also sought discussion in Parliament on the situation in Manipur, rising inflation and “misuse” of the ED and CBI.

'Sam Bahadur' box office collection day 3: The Vicky Kaushal starrer makes double digit number on Sunday

Vicky Kaushal starrer ‘Sam Bahadur‘ released on Friday with ‘Animal‘ and the film has been slowly paving its way in the hearts of the audience. It released in lesser number of screens than ‘Animal’ but it has managed to see a huge growth on Saturday and Sunday.
The Saturday numbers saw a growth of almost 50 percent as it made Rs 9 crore on Day 2. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the film has managed to score double digit numbers.’Sam Bahadur’ made Rs 10 crore nett on Sunday and that gave the film a very healthy weekend of around Rs 25 crore. This is considered quite good considering the fact that ‘Animal’ is just roaring and how! But the Monday figures will play a huge role in determinng the film’s fate.
Vicky Kaushal was seen at a theatre on Sunday which was packed. He interacted with fans who told him that he’ll surely get a National Award for this. Meanwhile, he responded and said, “Aap log aaye picture dekhne and for an actor it’s the big achievement to see a packed hall.”
Well, hoping that with this word of mouth, ‘Sam Bahadur’ manages to make a decent number in the next few days and continues its hold at the box office.
Meanwhile, ‘Animal’ has crossed Rs 200 crore nett in all languages over the weekend and that makes the film the second higest weekend grosser after ‘Jawan’. The advance bookings of Monday also look strong for the Ranbir Kapoor starrer.

Modi powers party to victory in 3 States, Congress ousts KCR in Telangana | India News

NEW DELHI: BJP on Sunday trounced Congress in straight contests in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, potentially putting Narendra Modi on the way to become the first PM since Jawaharlal Nehru to win three terms.
Congress won a handsome victory in Telangana, dislodging two-term CM K Chandrasekhar Rao of BRS to notch up its second success in the south after its win in Karnataka earlier this year. However, the victory in the revenue-surplus state can only be poor consolation for the losses suffered by the party in the heartland, of which at least two were unexpected not just for Congress but some neutral observers as well.

PM Narendra Modi Arrives at BJP Headquarters in Delhi as Party Wins Rajasthan Assembly Election 2023, Leads in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh

Coming at a time when the battle for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections has already been joined, Sunday’s outcome reinforced BJP’s political pre-eminence, at once boosting Modi from the frontrunner for 2024 to probable winner.
The successes were achieved in the face of heavy odds. Barring exceptions like home minister Amit Shah, the party had given up on Chhattisgarh, where the governing Congress appeared to be in an unassailable position. In Rajasthan, BJP had for the first time decided not to project its CM face and the bold break looked increasingly risky in the face of Congress’s late populism-fuelled rally under shrewd CM Ashok Gehlot.

While it may now appear to be paranoia, given the benefit of hindsight, even senior party leaders feared it would succumb to anti-incumbency in MP where BJP has been in office for two decades save a brief interlude of 15 months.
There were other challenges too, such as Rahul Gandhi‘s intriguing swing towards caste politics as a calculated tactic to woo the numerically preponderant OBCs and wean them away from Modi’s embrace.
The results showed that BJP had convincingly defeated the odds by leveraging Modi’s personal popularity, which remains impressively robust in an era marked by public fickleness and ever-escalating aspirations, even as he is about to complete a decade in the country’s top political office. Modi led from the front, energetically campaigning on a platform that has now gelled into a powerful blend of development, welfare, muscular nationalism, Hindutva and the promise of a resurgent Bharat destined to be a global force – a catch-all proposition which, thanks to the successful projection of the steps taken by the regime, invests ‘Modi ki guarantee’ with the necessary credibility.

'Animal' box office collection day 3: The Ranbir Kapoor film clocks the second highest weekend after 'Jawan' after a smashing Sunday

Before the release of ‘Animal‘, several questions were asked to director Sandeep Reddy Vanga if the ‘A’ certificate given to ‘Animal’ will affect the film’s box officeprowess. While he couldn’t predict the numbers which the film will generate, he was just very happy that the film got an ‘A’ certificate. Cut to present! Three days after the film has released, it has smashed the box office and how.The early estimates of the Sunday numbers show a significant growth on Saturday and with that, the film has torn the box office apart, for sure!
After entering the 100-crore club on Saturday. The film made Rs 56crore nett in Hindi language on Saturday. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the collection of Animal in Hindi is around Rs 64.80 crore. The total collection on Sunday including other languages will be around Rs 72.50 crore. With that, the film’s total collection has reached about Rs 202 crore in all languages. The Hindi total weekend will be around Rs 170 crore which makes it the second highest weekend number of all time after ‘Jawan‘.
This is certainly, Ranbir Kapoor‘s highest ever box office number ever. But that’s not all. The advance bookings of Monday also look promising and one can expect the film to make around Rs 30 crore on Monday. There’s immense buzz around the film on social media and even the criticism for ‘Animal’ seems to be working in the film’s favour as people are getting more curious to know what’s it all about?
‘Animal’ also stars Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna and Tripti Dimri alongside Ranbir.
