'They have to sort out their bowling': Irfan Pathan gives tips to RCB ahead of IPL 2024 auction | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: In preparation for the IPL 2024 auctionformer Indian pacer Irfan Pathan shared valuable advice with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) regarding the upcoming season.
During a discussion on Star Sports, Pathan noted that the addition of Cameron Green to the squad has effectively addressed RCB’s middle-order concerns.
However, Pathan emphasised the need for the Bengaluru-based franchise to address their bowling attack. He suggested that acquiring Sri Lankan bowlerWanindu Hasaranga at a reasonable price would be beneficial for RCB.
The 39-year-old former cricketer highlighted Hasaranga as a potential asset to bolster the team’s bowling capabilities.
In the event that RCB is unable to secure Hasaranga, Pathan proposed an alternative option in the form of Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Praising Mujeeb, he described the Afghan spinner as a mysterious bowler who can make a significant impact, particularly with the new ball, and prove valuable in challenging conditions.
“If you look at their squad, with Cameron Green coming in, they have their biggest headache sorted. The middle muddle is sorted. They will have to sort out their bowling. If they can get Hasaranga back at a cheaper price, well and good. If not, they can go for guys like Mujeeb. Mujeeb is a guy who can actually take the pitch away from the equation. He is a mystery bowler who can bowl with the new ball and he can be pretty handy in those sorts of tough conditions for bowlers,” Pathan said.
The 2007 T20 World Cup winner further added that RCB would want Aussie pacer Mitchell Starc since he can deliver at 140+ kmph and can help the franchise with his extra pace.
“I really think you might see Mitchell Starc playing for RCB because he was there before. They would want him there as well because, being a left-armer, bowling 140-plus, having that extra pace on those types of pitches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium will be of utmost importance for RCB,” he added.
The IPL 2024 auction will take place on December 19 in Dubai. 1166 players have registered themselves for the auction, including some big names like Rachin Ravindra, Travis Head and others. RCB will enter the player’s auction with Rs 23.25.

'Opening is not easy': Khawaja unsure of Labuschagne's role as opener

NEW DELHI: Australia opener Usman Khawaja is of the opinion that there’s no necessity to shift Marnus Labuschagne or any other player to open once David Warner concludes his Test career. He asserts that, given the challenges of the role, a specialist should handle the opening position.
Currently batting at No. 3, Labuschagne is seen by Khawaja as a risky option to be moved up in the order, particularly ahead of the Pakistan series.
When asked about the prospect of Labuschagne taking on the opening role after Warner’s likely retirement following the third Test against Pakistan in Sydney in the new year, Khawaja expressed his reservations.
“Have you asked Marnus this? I think he would give you a really clear, ‘hell no’. Marnus has got opening – it is…I think that is a long shot,” Khawaja was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
“Opening is not easy. It’s tough work. I can tell you that because I’ve batted at (No.)1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 for Australia. I’m telling you by far opening is the hardest and it’s very hard to bring someone who hasn’t opened,” he added.
“I’m positive if you put Marnus up there at opening he would do very well. But would he do as well opening as he does at No.3? I’m not sure. I wouldn’t want to take the risk (given he’s) averaging 55 (56.81) at three and Steve Smith averages 60 (58.61) in general. So you wouldn’t want to mess around with it too much,” said the Australia Test opener.
“Opening can be a very, very tough thing to do mentally more than physically so I’m always a bit shy of not letting people who haven’t opened much in the past open the batting,” he further stated.
Khawaja also dismissed the idea of Travis Head permanently going up to open after serving as a temporary opener in the Test series in India earlier this year while Warner was injured.
“He’s done so well at No.5. There’s no point in shifting around people. We have so many openers to pick from. I don’t see any point shifting around players for the sake of it. I think people are talking about that because of Mitch Marsh and Cameron Green. But I think they’re both going for the same spot. So decide who the better player is for that game at that time and then you worry about the rest of the team,” Khawaja said.
Australia will face Pakistan in a three-match Test series, with the first game starting on December 14.
Australia’s First Test squad: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitch Marsh, Lance Morris, Steve Smith, Mitch Starc, and David Warner.

'Pilot's movements, phone were tracked', claims Ashok Gehlot's OSD | India News

NEW DELHI: Outgoing Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot’s officer on special duty (OSD) Lokesh Sharma on Tuesday alleged that Gehlot tracked the phone and monitored the movements of his former deputy Sachin Pilot in the run-up to and during the 2020 rebellion.
He claimed that the monitoring was happening from before the rebellion as there was some idea that such a thing could happen.
Sharma, who was denied a ticket to contest the Rajasthan assembly polls, has been criticising Gehlot for the party’s defeat in the state poll.
He also claimed that had Gehlot loyalists allowed the legislature party meeting to happen last year in September and let the Congress observers implement the agenda as per the planning — the outcome of the Rajasthan state election would have been different.
There was no immediate reaction from Congress leaders Gehlot and Pilot or their aides on the allegations.
Highlighting the differences between Gehlot and Pilot, Sharma said, “Congress leadership wanted to effect a leadership change and bring in Pilot as the chief minister”.
Admitting that animosity between Gehlot and Pilot “harmed” the party’s prospects, he alleged, “When the political crisis of 2020 had come and Pilot ji had left with his 18 MLAs, then in such a situation, the government does put its machinery in to use and everyone is monitored, where do these people go, who do they meet and who do they speak with. So that is done and in that manner their monitoring was also done”.
“I said monitoring was being done continuously which includes all these things — movement, who are they speaking with, those things were being tracked and monitored,” Sharma told news agency PTI when asked about the details of the monitoring.
Sharma asserted that Congress would have conveniently pulled off the election if there had been a proper ticket distribution.
“There was no anti-incumbency against the government but people did not want to see many of the MLAs return as their representatives. Such reports were communicated to the chief minister. These were not just my reports but the AICC survey, and other reports were that sitting MLAs’ tickets should be cut but it was not done,” Sharma claimed.
“You can say it was his (Gehlot’s) stubbornness. He probably felt it was his moral duty towards those who had helped him save his government,” he said when asked why action had not been taken on the reports.
“I am saying so now as I want corrective measures to be taken as Lok Sabha polls are around the corner, and it is important to set things right,” he added.
On Monday, replying to a question on an earlier statement of Sharma, Pilot had said, “I have seen the statement. It is strange. Because he was OSD to the chief minister, that’s why it is a matter of concern. I believe the party will look into why he said so. And how much truth it holds.”

'Bouncing back with every rep': Rishabh Pant getting ready for IPL 2024 | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: India’s star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is leaving no stone unturned to make a return to competitive cricket after surviving a near-fatal accident last December when his car collided with a divider and caught fire.
Pant, who last played for India in a Test match against Bangladesh in Mirpur in December 2022, recently joined the Delhi Capitals training camp in Kolkata but refrained from taking part in the training sessions.
Pant, who regularly posts his rehab updates on social media platforms, posted a video on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday as he gears up to lead the Delhi franchise in the IPL 2024.
‘Bouncing back with every rep,” Pant’s video caption read.

Earlier on Sunday, former India cricketer-turned-commentator Deep Dasgupta came up with a big statement, suggesting that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) might consider Pant as a potential successor to MS Dhoni in IPL 2025 in the event of the former Indian captain’s retirement.
Dasgupta feels that one should not be surprised if CSK target Pant as Dhoni’s replacement since both are alike in terms of thinking.
“Don’t be surprised if they get Rishabh Pant by IPL 2025. MS Dhoni and Rishabh Pant are very close. Obviously, Rishabh adores MS, and MS also likes him very much. They spend a lot of time together. Their connection and Rishabh’s thinking are very similar, considering he is very attacking and positive. He’s always talking about winning and what not,” said Dasgupta.
