Jurors in former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York are hearing testimony from David Pecker, the former media executive who says he helped shield Trump from negative stories during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Pecker was the CEO of American Media, Inc., which owned the National Enquirer, a position he held until 2020. Prosecutors said he would testify about how he and the tabloid’s editor used a tactic known as “catch and kill” to suppress damaging stories about Trump.
His testimony came after prosecutors and defense attorneys clashed at a hearing over whether Trump should be held in contempt of court for violating a gag order imposed by the judge.
Attorneys from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office have asked Judge Juan Merchan to find Trump in contempt for 10 social media posts, many of which attacked likely witnesses in the case, including Stormy Daniels and Michael Cohen. They asked Merchan to impose a $1,000 fine for each post and order Trump to take them down.
The gag order forbids Trump from commenting on witnesses, jurors and others involved in the proceedings.
“His attacks on witnesses clearly violate the order, willfully and flagrantly. The court should now hold him in contempt for each of the 10 posts,” prosecutor Chris Conroy said. “No one is off limits to the defendant. He can attack and seek to intimidate anyone he wants to in service to himself.”
Todd Blanche, an attorney for Trump, argued that his client was responding to political attacks in his posts, and did not believe he was violating the order when reposting or quoting others. The judge seemed unpersuaded, but said he would not make a ruling immediately.
“Mr. Blanche, you’re losing all credibility, you’re losing all credibility with the court,” Merchan said at one point. “Is there any other argument you want to make?”
Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in the case and has pleaded not guilty.
The proceedings are not being televised, since New York law doesn’t allow recording of criminal proceedings. CBS News has reporters in the courtroom and in a nearby overflow room watching the trial.
Washington — The Justice Department and more than 100 victims of former USA Gymnastics physician Larry Nassar reached a civil settlement over allegations that FBI agents failed to properly investigate the gymnasts’ claims of abuse against the now-convicted doctor.
Superstar Olympian Simone Biles and fellow U.S. gold medalists Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney are among the victims who claimed the FBI did not pursue allegations that Nassar was abusing his patients.
The U.S. will pay $138.7 million to settle 139 claims against the FBI, the Justice Department announced Tuesday.
A 2021 Justice Department watchdog report confirmed that FBI agents did not take the proper investigative steps when they first learned that Nassar was sexually abusing young gymnasts in 2015. Those failures, according to the Justice Department inspector general, left the physician free to continue abusing patients for months. The FBI agents were either fired or retired, and in May 2022, federal prosecutors said they would not pursue criminal charges against the agents involved in those missteps.

“These allegations should have been taken seriously from the outset. While these settlements won’t undo the harm Nassar inflicted, our hope is that they will help give the victims of his crimes some of the critical support they need to continue healing,” Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin Mizer said in a statement announcing the settlement Tuesday.
The victims sued the FBI in 2022 alleging negligence and wrongdoing. The final settlement in this case resolves the victims’ claims against the federal government.

In 2021, FBI Director Christopher Wray, testifying before Congress, condemned the agents’ past handling of the Nassar allegations, adding, “On no planet is what happened in this case acceptable.” In 2022, he told Congress the FBI would not make the same mistakes in the future. Attorney General Merrick Garland characterized the FBI’s failures as “horrible.”
Neither Wray nor Garland were leading their respective organizations at the time of the FBI misconduct.
In total, settlements concerning the disgraced former national women’s gymnastics team doctor have now totaled nearly $1 billion. Michigan State Universitywhere Nassar was a doctor, agreed to pay $500 million to more than 300 women and girls who were assaulted by him.
The university was also accused of missing chances to stop Nassar. USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee in 2021 agreed to a $380 million settlement with his victims. As part of the agreement, the organizations must also make significant reforms to prevent future abuse, CBS News reported.
Nassar is serving multiple prison sentences for crimes of sexual abuse and child pornography after pleading guilty to several charges throughout 2017 and 2018.

After suffering heartache and grief, Aaron Carter’s twin sister, Angel Carter Conrad, is sharing her family’s story and previously unheard music from Aaron Carter in hopes of helping others. A portion of proceeds from “The Recovery Album” will go to the nonprofit The Kids Mental Health Foundation.
Aaron Carter died in 2022 after struggling with addiction and mental health. His official cause of death determined by the Los Angeles County coroner was that the 34-year-old singer accidentally drowned in a bathtub after taking an anti-anxiety medication, alprazolam, and inhaling difluoroethane, a flammable gas.
His death was one of a handful of tragedies the Carter family dealt with in recent years.
Leslie CarterAaron’s sister, died in 2012 at 25 after an apparent overdose. Last year, Bobbie Jean Carter, another sister of Aaron, died at 41 from “intoxication due to the combined effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine,” Entertainment Tonight reported.
In 2022, nearly 108,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.
“There’s certainly a generational dysfunction issue here that comes along with it, but as far as growing up, there was a time when we were, you know, a really close family. There was a lot of love, but there was a lot of chaos going on at the same time,” Angel Carter Conrad told CBS Mornings.
She said her parents often fought and that she couldn’t lean on them in times of need, but that fame changed the Carter family’s dynamics. In addition to Aaron’s singing career, brother Nick Carter is a member of the Backstreet Boys.
“Once money started coming in, you know we were a family that had no money,” she said. “We were from upstate New York. My parents were poor and they had never seen anything like this before, so once the money started coming in, it really started changing the dynamic because money became the moving force.”
Through her grief, she wants people to know you can find the good — even in a bad situation.
“The good in this situation is that Aaron does have this platform and my family has this platform and I would like to turn this ship around and to really start helping some other people and to learn from our story.”
Aaron Carter’s team and Angel Carter Conrad are now releasing his previously unheard music.
“The fans have been asking for this music, and after Aaron passed away, we put together a benefit concert to honor him called “The Songs for Tomorrow” concert, and we had played ‘Recovery’ during this show,” Angel Carter Conrad said.
She said through her brother’s struggles, she eventually lost hope. She focused on her therapy to help.
“There was a time for many years where I always had hope, but in the last few years of Aaron’s life, I just was waiting for him to snap out of it, and sadly, he never did.”
“The Recovery Album” comes out May 24. In an effort to raise awareness, part of the proceeds will go to the nonprofit The Kids Mental Health Foundation, formerly known as On our Sleeves.
“Children’s mental health is so important and I mean, you know we want to create a world where mental health is a vital part of every child’s upbringing, and that’s what I’m doing with my daughter,” Angel Carter Conrad said.

I know what it is like to be a reluctant entrepreneur.
Back in 2014, when I first started thinking about Starling Bank, if anyone had told me, “Ah, so you are going to be an entrepreneur,” I’d have said, “Absolutely not.” I was similarly reluctant to use the word “founder.”
Growing up, I always believed entrepreneurs were inventors. They made something. Today’s example might be James Dyson, because he invented the first bagless vacuum cleaner.
Elon Musk invented a rocket that went into space. I didn’t believe I was like this. I had gone to university, joined Lloyd’s Bank as a graduate trainee, and then worked my way up the corporate ladder.
It wasn’t until Starling Bank became a unicorn, reaching a valuation of over £1 billion, that I finally relented on the word “entrepreneur.”
Since then, I have reflected on why I never saw myself as a bona fide entrepreneur.
My conclusion is that, when I started my business, I didn’t do it because I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I did it because I had long since grown disillusioned with the world of banking and was convinced that I knew what needed to be done to put things right.
I had zero doubt about my idea for a new type of bank. That, in itself, is the basis for entrepreneurship. What I called myself really didn’t matter.
If you, too, are a reluctant entrepreneur, it might be helpful if I began by sharing what I, and other female entrepreneurs, think about how to identify whether there is an entrepreneur lurking beneath the surface (whether or not you would like to admit it to yourself).
Here are 10 signs you are an entrepreneur:
Anyone who gets discouraged by a “no” is never going to make it as an entrepreneur. I held meetings with more than 300 investors before I found someone interested in putting money into Starling Bank.
If I had given up at 10 meetings, or a hundred meetings, the business would never have gotten off the ground. Similarly, plenty of customers, regulators, potential hires, and seemingly everyone said no.
Hearing “no” time after time is part and parcel of being an entrepreneur. If you are the type to welcome this two-letter word as a challenge that allows you to show what you can do, then you’ve got the entrepreneur mindset.
Women, in particular, often get frustrated with corporate life because they feel underestimated or unrecognized.
Their input is ignored or played down. They report speaking up in meetings to put forward an idea, and it is met with silence, only for a male colleague to be praised when he repeats a virtually identical point later on.
I spent most of my career complaining about not getting the plum projects or not being paid enough, and very often was only able to make any progress by quitting one job to take another. In the end, I had to start my own business to achieve what I always believed to be my full potential.
It is quite possible that this is the reason why so many women become entrepreneurs following maternity leave.
After a break from the corporate world, they can’t face re-entering the fray where their achievements go unnoticed month after month. The idea of setting out alone and being judged on their own merits is more alluring.
Closely related to the above, many entrepreneurs have long since decided they don’t fit in, so don’t waste any time on it. When I started speaking with other female entrepreneurs, I was struck by just how different they were from the people I knew from corporate life.
In my previous career, I was surrounded by people who spent their entire careers trying to fit in. Entrepreneurs didn’t seem interested in all of that. They seemed more grounded and focused on the task at hand, rather than carefully weighing each word to see how they came across.
There’s an element of mischievousness here, too. It’s not enough to feel disgruntled about being passed over; you need to feel determined to do something to strike a blow at the establishment. Any entrepreneur who feels this way would be in fine company.
This is the motivation that spurred on Dame Stephanie Shirley, also known as Steve, who started a software house back in 1962 that introduced radical new flexible work practices for women in technology.
Entrepreneurs who have previously had “proper jobs” often report spending a lot of time looking at their firms or bosses and imagining how they would do it better. Their imagination is filled with dreams and ideas.
Mixed in with this is a certain amount of naivety. During my own entrepreneurial journey, it really helped that I dreamed big, but also that I was a little naive about the scale of what I dreamed about.
When things were difficult, it helped me imagine the next bit had to be easier. I’d tell myself we only need to get this one thing done, and it’ll be plain sailing.
This was even though every single day as an entrepreneur is about solving a new problem.
For some reason, a desire to win is often viewed negatively, but it is a quality all entrepreneurs need. In fact, I have not met an entrepreneur who isn’t super-competitive.
During the toughest times, an arch-rival is what you need to keep going, even if that rival doesn’t really see your business as a competitor.
They are the mark. You need to get ahead of them to get closer to your goal. True entrepreneurs turn this rivalry into pure energy.
It should be said, this rivalry should be healthy. Going head-to-head with daggers drawn causes unnecessary tension and doesn’t help anyone.
New entrepreneurs are often quite surprised to hear that most founders often speak with other businesses in their sector. It’s a great way to swap ideas and can help everyone.
Entrepreneurs are goal-driven. We like to take the initiative and solve problems, even if it means working on them for long periods to remove all obstacles that get in the way. This also means they are strategic in their game plans.
Right from the beginning at Starling, I had a plan in mind – and it was a grand plan.
Whenever I talked to anyone about anything to do with the business, I was thinking ahead about how what we were discussing would impact my end goal.
Whenever I approach something new, my first instinct is to head to a bookshop. I’ve been the same since I was a young child when my parents gave me an unlimited budget to spend at our local one. I always bought non-fiction and academic books and would pore over them to find out how to do things.
One year, my parents bought me a second-hand, 1956 copy of the Encyclopaedia Britannica – all 24 volumes. I devoured every page and, perhaps oddly, still have an incredible knowledge of life in the 1950s.
I’ve never lost the idea that books are there to advise and inform. Whenever I try anything new, I download dozens of books on the subject.
If I start something in the house, my Kindle is full of books on interior design. My shelves feature a lot of books about living and working in America/Ireland/Switzerland, basically tracking my career progression.
Beside them are endless books on starting a business, managing the transition from start-up to high-growth business, or engaging teams.
Not everyone is such a bookworm; I understand that. Some gather their intel by meeting as many experts as they can and listening carefully to every word. They learn something from every interaction.
Yet, however they absorb it, entrepreneurs are always looking to improve their outlook. If there is a better way to do something, they need to know it.
Your employees are people. Your customers are people. Your regulators are people. Your investors are people. All of your stakeholders are people.
Each one plays a role in making a high-growth business a success.
If just one stakeholder doesn’t engage, the business won’t succeed. Thus, being good with people is key.
To be successful, an entrepreneur needs people to listen to them and be inspired, whether they are investors, customers, or colleagues.
This talent is essential right from the beginning of an entrepreneurial venture when early team members need to be persuaded to give up the security of their existing jobs to join you on this (potentially crazy) endeavor.
When things don’t go according to plan, you’ll have to persuade them to keep the faith and stick with it.
Every single difficult conversation has to be sprinkled with just enough magic optimism dust. This is even more so when people are working for next to nothing – or even nothing at all.
You need them to come back the next day. Sometimes, that takes some next-level charm skills. Remaining upbeat and persuasive can be particularly challenging during funding rounds when so much is riding on the outcome.
I have many vivid memories of returning to the office empty-handed and, yet, telling everyone I had a great lead.
Entrepreneurialism is not like an uplifting movie, where the main character has an idea and then a sped-up reel shows them hurtling towards success. There will be multiple high points and low points along the way.
Almost every entrepreneur will face a time when they are hours away from losing everything they worked for. Before Starling received its banking license and began opening accounts, the business came close to collapse three times.
It has been well documented that we lost a crucial potential investor at the eleventh hour, and the entire team walked out to start a competitive product (great news, a rival – see point five above!).
It takes 100% commitment to the vision to keep going at these low points. If you have that, you’re an entrepreneur.

Today is Manoj Bajpayee’s 55th birthday. Born in a small village in Bihar, Manoj’s first dream was to become an actor. For this he had to struggle a lot from the beginning. He also resorted to lies to reach Delhi for NSD. He told his parents that he was going to Delhi for IAS preparation. Manoj has made his place in the film industry by breaking many barriers.
Learn the story of becoming The Manoj Bajpayee through 10 cases…
Case 1- Used to collect money to drink cold drinks
Manoj Bajpayee was born on 23 April 1969 in Belwa, Bihar. He was the second of 5 siblings. Manoj’s father was a farmer. In such a situation, the financial condition of the family was not very good. Manoj loved cold drinks and kebabs since childhood, but he didn’t have enough money to eat them all.
He used to see these things while passing by a cold drink shop or a kebab shop. They thought to themselves that once they had collected some money, they would enjoy both these things. Then whenever he had money, he would first drink cold drinks and eat kebabs with the remaining money.

Case 2- Father wanted to become a doctor, he was sent to a hostel at the age of 7
Father was a farmer. As a result, Manoj had to do the work from plowing the field to planting. However, the father never wanted his children to farm. The earnings were low, but he taught all the children well. Father wanted Manoj to become a doctor. The reason behind his desire was that he himself also wanted to become a doctor, but his dream was not fulfilled due to lack of 5 lakh rupees. This was the reason why 7 year old Manoj was sent to the hostel.
Manoj revealed on the ‘Anupam Kher Show’ that he still has a grievance against his parents for this matter. He said, ‘Even today I tell my parents that I should not have been sent to a hostel at such a young age. All the older kids there used to tease me a lot.’
Case 3- Decided to go to NSD from class-5 itself
The father thought that his son would become a doctor, but Manoj never had anything else in mind but acting. No one in the family was connected with the film industry, but Manoj’s parents were very fond of watching films. As a child, Manoj also watched films like ‘Jai Santoshi Ma’ 6-7 times with his parents. As Manoj grew older, his passion for acting grew, but he had no idea what to do in the future. Around 5th grade, he read interviews with Raj Babbar, Ompuri and Naseeruddin Shah. The trio spoke about NSD in this interview with Life Journey.
After reading this, Manoj realized that after graduation, he could go to NSD to study acting. At that moment he decided that in future he would study acting in NSD.
Case 4- Went to Delhi after lying to family about becoming IAS
Manoj went to Delhi after passing 12th, but reached here by lying. Manoj’s parents were unwilling to send him to Delhi with the promise that he would become an actor. In such a situation, he told his father, ‘I may not become a doctor, but I will definitely become an IAS and I have to go to Delhi to prepare for it.’
Hearing this, his family sent him to Delhi. After spending 2-3 years in Delhi, Manoj thought of telling the truth to his family. He wrote to his father saying that he had come to Delhi to become an actor. However, the father’s reply to Manoj was very funny. He wrote, ‘Dear son Manoj. I am your father. I know you have decided to become an actor.’ Manoj started laughing after reading this.

Case 5- Friends feared that Manoj would commit suicide after not getting admission in NSD
Manoj took admission in Delhi University for graduation and simultaneously started doing street theatre. After completing his graduation, he failed the first time he took the NSD exam. This disappointed him. His condition worsened due to crying. He had also lost the hope of living. Seeing his condition, his friends feared that he would do something wrong to himself. For this reason some friend was always present with him.
Recovering from this shock, he took the NSD exam again, failed again. After that, Manoj joined Barry John’s acting school. Where along with learning acting, he also taught acting to children by taking a fee of 1500 rupees. After learning acting tricks from Barry John, he took the NSD exam for the third time. This time the professor there said, ‘We can’t take you as a student, but you can work here as a teacher if you want.’
Case 6- Nasib got the first movie Bandit Queen
One day when Manoj was rehearsing, Tigmanshu Dhulia came to him. He told Manoj, ‘Shekhar Kapur wants to meet you in connection with a film.’ Manoj was shocked to hear this and said, ‘Brother don’t joke, even so I am not having a good time.’ On this Tigmanshu said, ‘I am telling the truth. He has seen your photo and wants to meet you in connection with the movie Bandit Queen.’
After hearing this, Manoj went to meet Shekhar Kapur. After the meeting, he was offered the role of Vikram Mallah in the film, but after a while the role went to Nirmal Pandey. Seeing this once again broke Manoj’s heart. It was only a few days after this incident. He was shooting in Kolkata. Then he got a call from Tigmanshu, ‘You should come to Delhi soon. Naseer Sahib has refused to play the character of Mansingh. Shekhar Kapur wants to cast you in this role instead of him.’ Manoj was very happy to hear this and thus became a part of the film Bandit Queen.’
Case 7- Had to live in a chali in Mumbai, had no money even for food
Manoj received 50 thousand rupees for this film. With the help of which he reached Mumbai along with Saurabh Shukla and other colleagues. Here he lived in Chali with seven friends. From 1993 to 1997, he spent these years in various ways. He said in an interview that this period was the worst period of his life. There was no proper place to live and no money to eat. Stayed alone in the room all day. The whole day was spent visiting the offices of big directors and producers. Meanwhile, he was not getting work in any big project.
Case 8- Mahesh Bhatt stopped leaving the industry
Manoj got a job in the TV show ‘Swabhiman’ with a lot of difficulty. Here he used to get 1500 rupees per day. Earlier he was approached for only 10 episodes. Even after this, Manoj wanted to work on the big screen. He was getting weaker day by day due to the struggle. As a result, he decided to leave the industry.
Meanwhile, Mahesh Bhatt saw his work in the show ‘Swabhiman’. He was very impressed with Manoj’s work. He met Manoj. During the conversation, he came to know that Manoj wanted to leave the industry. On this he said, ‘You wait a little. You are a great actor, this city and cinema have become you. Soon your struggle will end.’
Case 9- Ram Gopal Varma was looking for Manoj for 5 years for Satya
What Mahesh Bhatt said proved true after some time. Soon Manoj got work in the film ‘Run’. During the shooting of this film, he met Ram Gopal Varma. When he came to know that Manoj had played the role of Man Singh in the film Bandit Queen, he got up from his chair. Manojan said – ‘Where were you all these days? I have been looking for you for the past 5 years. I want to make a film with you.’ It was after this meeting that Manoj became a part of Ram Gopal Varma’s film ‘Satya’. This film marked a turning point in his career.
Manoj played the role of Bhikhu Mhatre in the movie ‘Satya’. The film was directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The film won 6 Filmfare Awards and 1 National Award
Case 10- Struggled for 7 years even after ‘Satya’, career got back on track after the film ‘Rajneeti’
’After Satya’, from 1999 to 2003, Manoj got good roles in films, but after that he again started struggling for good roles. This struggle lasted for 7 years. From 2003 to 2010, he was looking for good roles. It is not that he did not get work during this period, he got work but it was not of his choice. After such a long struggle, his career got back on track with the movie ‘Rajneeti’. Then came the release of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ in 2012, which made Manoj an overnight star.
Manoj played the role of Virender Pratap in the film ‘Rajneeti’ directed by Prakash Jha. The film also featured actors like Ajay Devgan, Arjun Rampal, Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor. Made in 45 crores, the film collected 145.50 crores
After 2010, 2022 was the only year in which no Manoj film was released. He was a part of great films like ‘Special 26’, ‘Shootout at Wadala’, ‘Satyagraha’, ‘Talwar’, ‘Baaghi 2’, ‘Satyamev Jayate’. Manoj has released a total of 8 films from 2019 to 2023. Out of which only 3 films ‘Sonchiriya’, ‘Sooraj Par Mangal Bhari’ and ‘Joram’ have been released in theatres. All other films were streamed on OTT. His 7 web series is also on OTT.
