Lamine Yamal delivered the defining moment of Barcelona’s La Liga opener, producing a spectacular stoppage-time goal to wrap up a 3-0 victory over Mallorca on Saturday night. The 18-year-old, who had already created the first goal, ensured the champions began their title defence in style with a curling effort into the top corner that left the goalkeeper stranded. It was a finish worthy of sealing the match and showed just why Yamal is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Europe. Barcelona had been in control from the start, with their dominance further enhanced by the red cards slammed on Mallorca’s players. Manu Morlanes and Vedat Muriqi were both shown red before half-time, reducing the hosts to nine men and leaving them with little hope of recovery. By then, Barca were already two goals ahead. The breakthrough came in the 7th minute when Raphinha rose highest to nod in Yamal’s precise cross. Ferran Torres extended the lead halfway through the first half, unleashing a powerful long-range shot. From that point, it was one-way traffic. Barcelona dictated the tempo and created several chances, while Mallorca simply looked to contain the damage. However, the game had its own share of controversy, with fans on social media pointing out that the ball had likely gone out of play in the buildup to the first and that a Mallorca player was down with an injury when the visitors scored the second.

Poll

What do you think of Lamine Yamal’s performance in the match against Mallorca?

The final word, however, belonged to Yamal. Having started the move himself, he cut inside in injury time and let fly a curling strike that bent away from the keeper and ended up in the top corner. The goal sealed an outstanding individual display and confirmed Barcelona’s commanding start to the season and their title defense.

NEW DELHI/SASARAM: With Bihar gearing up for assembly polls, leader of opposition in LS Rahul Gandhi is all set to launch the ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra’ from Sasaram in Rohtas district Sunday to highlight the alleged assault on people’s voting rights through the special intensive revision (SIR) of the state’s electoral rolls and to make the battle against “vote theft” a mass movement.Rahul will be joined in the yatra, spread over 16 days, by members of INDIA bloc parties that are part of the “mahagathbandhan” in Bihar, such as RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav. The yatra will culminate with a show of strength at a rally at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan on Sept 1.On Saturday, Rahul on X said, “Sixteen days, 20-plus districts, 1,300-plus kilometres. Khera said, it was only after Supreme Court’s intervention that the EC was compelled to address the concerns of the common people and voters.Khera said the aim of the Yatra was to ensure awareness and alertness among the people so that the Modi govt does not continue with its conspiracy to deny voting rights to the people of Bihar.

'War 2' box office collection day 3: The Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, Kiara Advani starrer crosses the Rs 140 crore mark despite a MAJOR drop, while Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ enjoys the reign on Saturday |

'War 2' box office collection day 3: The Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, Kiara Advani starrer crosses the Rs 140 crore mark despite a MAJOR drop, while Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ enjoys the reign on Saturday

Packed with high-octane action sequences, one of the much-awaited spy thrillers, ‘War 2’ made it to the theatres on Friday, August 14, 2025. Starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr. NTR, and Kiara Advani in the lead, clashed at the box office with Thaliavar Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie,’ which, needless to say, was one of 2025’s biggest big screen clashes. The film made an impressive opening and kept the cash registers ringing even on day 2, surpassing the ‘Coolie’; however, on day 3, i.e., on Saturday, the film witnessed a significant drop in collections and was beaten by the Rajini starrer.

‘War 2’ box office collection day 3 update

According to Sacnilk, the movie opened with an impressive number of Rs 52 Cr across all languages. In this, it made Rs 29 Cr in Hindi, Rs 0.25 Cr in Tamil, and Rs 22.75 Cr in Telugu. Thereafter, on Independence Day, the movie witnessed a growth of around 10 percent, and the business went up to Rs 57.35 Cr, in which the collection from Hindi was Rs 44.5 Cr, Tamil Rs 0.35 Cr, and Telugu Rs 12.5 Cr. However, on Saturday, the movies couldn’t enjoy the weekend and festive surge of Janmashtami, as the collection went down to Rs. 33 Cr (early estimates) across all languages in India. With this, the total collection of ‘War 2’ after 3 days stands at Rs. 142.35 Cr. At this pace, the movie is expected to cross Rs. 150 cr with ease and create a new record.

Competition from Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’

Thalaviar’s action drama surpassed the collection of ‘War 2’ on day 1, as it made Rs. 65 Cr on its opening Friday. The collection came from Hindi, Tamil, and Kannada versions of the movies. However, on day 2, it was outperformed by the Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR starrer and made Rs. 54.75 CR. On Saturday, just like ‘War 2’, the movie witnessed a major drop, yet it collected Rs. 38.50 Cr, and took the lead in the box office race. As of now, the movie has made Rs. 158.25 Cr in the domestic market.

‘War 2’ Review

With a rating of 3 stars from TOI critics, excerpts from our review of the movie read – “Hrithik Roshan brings gravitas to the screen as the roguish yet poised Kabir. He impresses as a high-octane action hero and in the film’s emotional moments. Junior NTR matches his energy and intensity, holding his own as a performer and in executing the action sequences. Kiara Advani makes her presence felt despite limited screen time, though the use of stunt doubles in an early fight scene is noticeable. Ashutosh Rana and Anil Kapoor are impactful in their roles.War 2 offers high-octane moments, striking visuals, and polished production to make for a passable big-screen experience. Strictly watchable only if you’re in it purely for the action and spectacle.”

SC's interference in Prez-guv powers will destabilise power balance: Govt

NEW DELHI: In a blazing response to Supreme Court’s judgment fixing deadlines for President and governors in granting or withholding assent to bills passed by assemblies, Centre on Saturday warned impermissible invasion of constitutionally conferred high plenary zone on the top constitutional post holders by SC in the garb of judicial review powers would destabilise the balance of powers among the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary.“A wide-ranging judicial review of assent procedures, either post-assent or at a stage anterior to the grant of assent, would potentially destabilise the constitutional balance between organs of State. It would create an institutional hierarchy and upset the constitutional balance of powers between the three organs,” it said, adding the judiciary does not hold keys or solutions for every conundrum that may arise in a democratic society.Objecting to the manner in which SC used its exclusive powers under Article 142 to arrogate itself the power to amend the Constitution to fix deadlines for the President and governors in granting or withholding assent to bills and grant “deemed assent” to 10 Tamil Nadu bills, the Centre said, “Article 142 does not empower the court to create a concept of ‘deemed assent’, turning the constitutional & legislative process on its head.”In its written submissions filed Saturday in support of President Droupadi Murmu’s reference raising 14 queries to situations arising after the contentious Apr 8 judgment by Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan, Centre said exercising judicial powers over decisions of the President and governors in relation to bills would confer supremacy on judiciary, which is against the Constitution’s basic structure, a red line that cannot be crossed by any organ of governance.“The classical notion of judicial review cannot be lifted and applied to assent as the factors at play during the grant or withholding of assent have no legal or constitutional parallel. The unique duality of assent thus deserves a uniquely calibrated judicial approach,” it said. It said each of the three organs of governance derive power from the Constitution, which does not assign any higher pedigree or superiority to any one organ that would enable judiciary to relegate the high position of gubernatorial post to a subservient one. Issues relating to bills, with regard to decisions of the President and governors, “deserve political answers and not necessarily judicial,” the Centre said.Certain political questions may arise in the exercise of the core functions of any of the three organs, and these would have been answered through democratic remedies under the Constitution. The judiciary, in the zest of finding a solution to every problem, cannot brush aside the essential constitutional feature of separation of powers, the Centre said.Though some overlap has happened over the years despite clear separation of powers envisaged by the Constitution, the powers and limitations of these three organs flow from the same constitutional text without ascribing “any higher pedigree or superior legitimacy to any organ”, it said. Notwithstanding the overlap, certain zones remain exclusive to each – Legislature, Executive and Judiciary, it said, adding none can trench upon the domain exclusive to another. Disapproving the manner in which the Tamil Nadu governor was treated in SC’s Apr 8 judgment, the Centre said governors are not foreigners in states, not just emissaries of the Centre but represent national interest and democratic will in states as part of national fraternity.“When the Constitution seeks to impose time limits for taking certain decisions, it specifically mentions such time limits. On the other hand, when it designedly sought to keep the exercise of powers flexible, it did not impose any fixed time limit. Since the text of Art 200 or 201, does not provide a specific time limit, no form of judicial review or judicial interpretation can impose the same.” it said.

'Moment of pride': Shubhanshu Shukla, 2nd Indian in space, returns home
New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta receives Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla upon his arrival at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, in New Delhi, early Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025.

NEW DELHI: Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, only the second Indian in space, returned to the country early Sunday after completing the Nasa-led Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Shukla, who splashed down off the coast of California on July 15 after an 18-day stay aboard the ISS, was received at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport by his wife Kamna, Union minister Jitendra Singh, and Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta. The Indian Air Force test pilot became the first Indian in 41 years—since Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma in 1984—to travel to space, and the first ever to visit the ISS. The mission launched from Nasa’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on June 25. Ahead of his return, Shukla posted an emotional note on X, writing:“As I sit on the plane to come back to India I have a mix of emotions running through my heart. I feel sad leaving a fantastic group of people behind who were my friends and family for the past one year during this mission. I am also excited about meeting all my friends, family and everyone in the country for the first time post mission. I guess this is what life is – everything all at once.He added that his commander, veteran astronaut Peggy Whitson, often reminded him: “The only constant in spaceflight is change.”During his stay aboard the ISS, Shukla conducted multiple scientific experiments. According to Isro, his work will feed directly into preparations for India’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme, which begins with an unmanned mission later this year. The Axiom-4 mission marked a significant step in India’s growing human spaceflight ambitions, with Shukla’s contributions expected to lay the groundwork for sending an Indian astronaut to space aboard an indigenous spacecraft in the coming years.

PESHAWAR: The death toll in north Pakistan’s flash floods and landslides crossed 350 on Saturday, with one resident in worst-hit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Buner saying the torrents “came like fire”.The devastation, caused by heavy monsoon rains, came without warning. Villagers in Buner said it wasn’t rainwater but a wall of mud and boulders crashing down the mountains. “It felt as if the sky broke apart. We had no chance to run,” said Gul Zarin, a shopkeeper who lost his brother.Buner alone accounted for over 200 fatalities. Dozens were still missing. Neighbouring districts — Swat, Bajaur, Dir, Shangla, Mansehra, and Kohistan — were left in ruins as swollen rivers swept away homes, bridges, and police outposts. For many Pakistanis, the scenes recall the 2022 disaster that killed over 1,700 people and submerged a third of the country.Met department warned of more rain till Aug 21 in the region, with cloudbursts and glacial lake outbursts still a danger. Relief operations remain hampered by broken roads and washed-away bridges.Even rescuers were not spared. A govt helicopter ferrying relief supplies to Bajaur crashed in heavy rain, killing all five on board, including two pilots. One had messaged his wife earlier in the day: “Don’t worry, I’ll be back tonight.”For survivors, the destruction is personal. In Pir Baba, a mother sat on the rubble of her home, holding a sodden schoolbag. “This is all I found of my son,” she whispered. The nine-year-old, who dreamed of becoming a teacher, was washed away with hundreds of others. In Shangla, villagers dug with bare hands to retrieve the dead. “We buried them ourselves. “There was no one else to help,” said a teenage boy, his face streaked with dust. The floods are now pushing south. Rising waters in Swabi and Mardan threaten to spill into the Indus plains. Farmers have begun moving cattle and bedding to higher ground. “We can see the river swelling every hour. If it breaks, we will lose everything,” said one farmer.Although the fury reminded many of the 2022 floods, this year’s devastation has been swifter and more violent. Scientists warn that a warming atmosphere is turning each monsoon into a greater threat. The grief, however, is not Pakistan’s alone. The same rivers and monsoon systems bind South Asia. “Maybe people across the border heard this thunder too. It was the sound of our lives breaking,” said a resident of Dir.Beyond statistics, a survivor’s words revealed the raw truth: “We were not warned — only buried. The state comes too late, the water too fast. Our children’s future is drowning with us.” This monsoon has left Pakistan with a stark reminder: climate reckoning respects no borders.

India talks tough on important sectors

Postponing or rescheduling the meeting is important because the US has imposed a significant 50% on Indian products. The US is seeking increased market access in sensitive sectors like agriculture and dairy, which India cannot agree to as it would impact the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers. India has made it clear that it will not compromise the interests of its farmers and cattle rearers. The US and India have announced their intention to finalize the first phase of the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by the fall of 2025.
