'No ruling side or opposition for us': EC in first presser since Bihar SIR; backs exercise

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India on Sunday, in its first presser since the controversial special intensive revision (SIR) in Bihar, dismissed the opposition’s claims of biased approach towards any political party and said that there was “no ruling side or opposition for us”. “As per the Constitution of India, every citizen of India who has attained the age of 18 years must become a voter and must also vote. You all know that, as per the law, every political party is born through registration with the Election Commission,” Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said. Then how can the Election Commission discriminate among the same political parties? For the Election Commission, all are equal. No matter who belongs to any political party, the Election Commission will not step back from its constitutional duty,” he added. He further raised concerns over some parties and leaders “spreading misinformation on SIR in Bihar.”Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi slammed the EC’s Special Intensive Revision in Bihar as a “conspiracy to steal” the upcoming polls.“I am telling you from this stage that Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha elections are being stolen in the entire country. Their latest conspiracy is to conduct SIR in Bihar and steal the Bihar elections as well. All of us have come to this stage to tell you that we will not let them steal this election,” Rahul Gandhi said at Congress’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ event. The poll body and state CEOs have repeatedly refuted Rahul Gandhi’s Aug 7 “vote chori” allegations and similar opposition claims through fact-checks on social media.EC on Saturday reiterated that electors and political parties have a month-long period to submit claims and objections prior to the publication of the final roll. Beyond this, they can still pursue a two-stage appeal—initially with the district magistrate (DM) and thereafter with the chief electoral officer (CEO).“It seems some political parties and their booth level agents did not examine the electoral rolls at the appropriate time (during claims and objections and then, the appeal period) and did not point out errors, if any, to SDMs/EROs, DEOs or CEOs,” EC said, adding if done at the “right time through the right channels, it would have enabled the SDM/ERO to correct the mistakes, if genuine, before those elections,” it said.It said that the parliamentary and assembly election system is a multi-layered, decentralized setup. Sub-Divisional Magistrates act as Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), assisted by Booth Level Officers (BLOs), to prepare and finalize electoral rolls and ensure their accuracy. Once the draft roll is published, both digital and physical copies are shared with political parties and uploaded on the ECI website.

'There is no party nor any opposition for the Election Commission, all are equivalent': ECI replied on the allegations of Bihar SIR and 'Vote Theft', read- Election Commission of India Press Conference Amid Bihar Sir Row and Rahul Gandhi Vote Chori Charge

ECI Press Conference: The Election Commission (ECI) held a press conference on Sunday (August 17) amid the continuous opposition from opposition parties over the allegations of ‘vote theft’ made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Voter List released in Bihar. In addition to the announcement of the election schedule, formally calling a press conference by the Election Commission on any other issue is an unusual thing in itself. During this, the Election Commission responded to all the allegations of the opposition leaders.

Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said that there is no party nor any opposition for the Election Commission. He said, “Every political party is born from registration in the Election Commission, then how can the Election Commission discriminate between those political parties.” He said that every citizen of India, who has completed the age of 18 years. Nomination should be done as a voter and exercise your franchise.

In the press conference of the Election Commission, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar further said, “Every political party is given complete information about the voter list but unfortunately some political parties are spreading confusion.”

Rahul Gandhi has accused the ‘vote chari’

Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly accused the Election Commission of rigging the voter-related data. They allege that ‘vote theft’ has taken place in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Haryana. The Commission has asked the Congress leader to release the names of those people, who claims that they have been incorrectly added or removed in the voter list. Also asked to present an a declaration.

The Election Commission has even said that if the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha fails to give an affidavit in support of his allegations, then they will have to apologize. Opposition parties are also raising questions about the Election Commission’s move to conduct a special intensive revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar. Opposition parties claim that crores of eligible citizens will be denied the franchise in the absence of papers.

The Supreme Court has also asked the Election Commission to release the details of 65 lakh names removed from the voter list to increase transparency in the voter list in Bihar, including the reasons for not including them, on the Election Commission website. Currently, the case continues to be heard in the apex court.

Rahul Gandhi launched ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi on Sunday alleged that conspiracy was being made to steal elections through the SIR of Bihar Voter List, but the opposition will not allow this to happen. The former Congress president also claimed in a meeting organized before the start of the ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ that now everyone has come to know that votes are being stolen across the country. Rahul Gandhi said that this is a fight to save the Constitution.

He claimed that efforts are being made to steal the election by adding names to the voter list through SIR and removing the name. But this conspiracy will not be allowed to succeed. The Congress leader said, “Wherever the vote is being stolen, we will catch this theft and tell the public.” Rahul Gandhi claimed that Prime Minister Modi came under pressure and talked about getting caste census, but it is known that he will not conduct a real caste census.

The issue of Bihar SIR will also be raised in this journey. A total of 1,300 km will be covered in more than 20 districts in 16 days in the yatra. Rahul Gandhi will also take a march in various places in this visit. The trip starting from Sasaram will conclude on 1 September with a ‘Voter Rights Rally’ at the historic Gandhi Maidan in Patna.

This public meeting will include national level leaders of the ‘India’ alliance. The journey will pass through Aurangabad, Gaya, Nawada, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Munger, Bhagalpur, Katihar, Purnia, Araria, Supaul, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, East Champaran, West Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Chhapra and Ara.

Brighton and Hove Albion have confirmed that a supporter passed away during their Premier League opener against Fulham on Saturday. The 72-year-old man became unwell in the second half of the match while seated in the east stand upper. Despite immediate attention from emergency staff and prolonged efforts that included CPR and defibrillation, the supporter could not be revived. Privacy screens were quickly put up as medical teams worked on the scene. Paramedics from South East Coast Ambulance Service, St John Ambulance, Sussex Police, the club’s crowd doctor and stewards were all involved in the response. In a statement on the club’s official website, chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber said, “This was an incredibly sad end to the match this afternoon, and our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family and friends of the gentleman who lost his life. While the gentleman concerned is foremost in our minds, we are also aware that it was an emotional and distressing situation for staff and supporters in the direct vicinity. Over the coming days we will ensure those affected are properly supported.” Club doctor and emergency medicine consultant Dr Rob Galloway also addressed the tragedy. He said, “Firstly, I would like to convey my condolences and sympathies to the gentleman’s family and friends. It was a tragic outcome, but from an emergency response perspective, the medical care was exemplary, and the professionalism of club stewards and Sussex Police provided the medical team with the best possible working environment.” Officials explained why play was not halted during the incident. Brighton’s safety team, in consultation with Sussex Police and the Premier League, decided that stopping the match might have drawn unnecessary attention to the scene and disrupted resuscitation attempts. They also noted that any delay could have complicated matters if the supporter had responded and needed immediate transport to hospital.

Poll

Do you think the match should have been paused during the medical emergency?

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but the result was overshadowed by the events in the stands. For Brighton, the day will be remembered less for the football and more for the loss of one of their own, with tributes and condolences now flowing toward the supporter’s family and friends.

'War 2' box office collection day 4 (Live): The Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, Kiara Advani starrer crosses the Rs. 150 crore mark, while Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ closes in on the Rs. 170 crore on Sunday |

'War 2' box office collection day 4 (Live): The Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, Kiara Advani starrer crosses the Rs. 150 crore mark, while Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ closes in on the Rs. 170 crore on Sunday

Three powerhouse performers of the Indian entertainment industry joined hands for one of the biggest spy thrillers of 2025 – ‘War 2’. With the star power of Hrithik roshan, JR NTRand Kiara Advanithe vision of director Ayaan Mukherji, and a gripping tale packed with high-octane action sequences, the movie became the talk of the town right from the word go. Released on August 14, the film did live up to the expectations with an impressive opening. However, after smashing collection on August 14 and 15, the movie’s business slowed down. Yet, as we speak, the movie has crossed the Rs. 150 crore mark.

‘War 2’ box office collection day 4 update

Released a day ahead of Indian Independence Day, ‘War 2’ opened with Rs 52 Cr across all languages in the domestic market, according to Sacnilk report. Released in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, the movie made Rs 29 Cr, Rs 0.25 Cr, and Rs 22.75 Cr, respectively. Thereafter, it benefited from the Independence Day festivities and earned Rs 57.35 Cr. If we break it down, then the film made Rs 44.5 Cr in Hindi, Rs 0.35 Cr in Tamil, and Rs 12.5 Cr in Telugu. However, from day 3, i.e., Saturday, the movies saw a drop in business. With a dip of more than 40 percent, it collected Rs. 33.25 Cr (rough data) across all languages. And on day 4 past noon, the movie has collected Rs. 8.89 Cr, taking the tally to Rs 151.58 Cr.

Tough competition from Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’

‘War 2’ isn’t the only big release that made it to the theatres this Friday; it clashed with Thalaviar’s action drama ‘Coolie.’ Trade reports show that on the opening day, with the collection of Rs. 65 Cr, ‘Coolie’ outshone ‘War 2,’ but on day 2, the latter had the last laugh. Nevertheless, on Saturday, the tables turned one more time, and despite a drop of around 29 percent, it collected Rs. 38.6 Cr. As we speak, it is still leading the race, with a business of Rs. 9.91 crore on Sunday, day 4, bringing its total to Rs. 168.26 crore.

‘War 2’ Review

“Hrithik Roshan brings gravitas to the screen as the roguish yet poised Kabir. He impresses as a high-octane action hero and in the film’s emotional moments. Junior NTR matches his energy and intensity, holding his own as a performer and in executing the action sequences. Kiara Advani makes her presence felt despite limited screen time, though the use of stunt doubles in an early fight scene is noticeable. Ashutosh Rana and Anil Kapoor are impactful in their roles,” reads an excerpt from TOI’s review of the movie

Pakistan's Asia Cup squad | Coach Mike Hesson reveals why Babar Azam was left out: 'Asked to improve in some areas'
Coach Mike Hesson and Babar Azam

NEW DELHI: Pakistan on Sunday announced a 17-member squad for the triangular T20I series in Sharjah and the Asia Cup in the UAE, leaving out stalwarts Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. The decision underlined a shift in strategy, with the selectors preferring aggressive batters Saim Ayub, Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Neither Babar nor Rizwan has featured in a T20 international since December 2024, when Pakistan faced South Africa. While both remain among the country’s premier batting talents, head coach Mike Hesson admitted that Babar has been asked to sharpen specific aspects of his game to reclaim his spot.

Poll

Do you agree with the decision to leave Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan out of the T20I squad?

“There’s no doubt Babar has been asked to improve in some areas, particularly against spin and in terms of his strike-rate,” Hesson told reporters at the squad unveiling. “Those are aspects I know he’s working very hard on at the moment.”Babar is set to represent Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League later this year, an opportunity Hesson sees as crucial to the batter’s comeback trail. “A player like Babar also has the opportunity to play in the BBL and showcase improvements in those areas of T20 cricket. He’s simply too good a player for us not to consider,” the coach stressed.Since Hesson took charge of Pakistan’s white-ball set-up, the side has shown mixed results — winning T20 series against Bangladesh and West Indies but also suffering a series defeat in Bangladesh. More worryingly, the West Indies recorded their first bilateral ODI series win over Pakistan in 34 years. Babar, meanwhile, endured a lean run with scores of 47, 0 and 9 in that ODI rubber. While praising the in-form trio of Ayub, Farhan and Zaman, Hesson reiterated that Babar’s quality cannot be overlooked. “At the moment, the players we have are performing exceptionally well. But Babar has every chance to return by proving his game has evolved.”Pakistan will first contest a triangular T20 series involving Afghanistan and the UAE (Aug. 29–Sept. 7 in Sharjah) before heading into the Asia Cup (Sept. 9–28 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi).

Their latest conspiracy is to conduct SIR in Bihar and steal the Bihar elections as well.
