Israel approves E1 settlement plan, move seen as ‘erasing’ Palestinian state; 3,500 homes to cut West Bank in two

Israel approves E1 settlement plan, move seen as ‘erasing’ Palestinian state; 3,500 homes to cut West Bank in two

Israel on Wednesday granted final approval for a controversial settlement project in the occupied West Bank that critics say would sever Palestinian territorial continuity and effectively end prospects for a future Palestinian state. The plan, known as the E1 project, will see the construction of around 3,500 housing units adjacent to the settlement of Maale Adumim, east of Jerusalem. If implemented, the development would cut the West Bank in two, severing the last geographical link between Ramallah in the north and Bethlehem in the south.Settlement expansion in E1 has been under discussion for more than two decades, but was repeatedly frozen due to US pressure. The international community overwhelmingly regards Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank as illegal under international law and a key obstacle to peace, AP reported.Far-right finance minister Bezalel Smotrich, a former settler leader, framed the move as a direct challenge to recent European decisions to recognize a Palestinian state.“The Palestinian state is being erased from the table not with slogans but with actions,” Smotrich said. “Every settlement, every neighborhood, every housing unit is another nail in the coffin of this dangerous idea.”Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuwho has consistently opposed a Palestinian state alongside Israel, has pledged to maintain indefinite control over the West Bank, east Jerusalem, and Gaza, territories seized in the 1967 war that Palestinians seek for their state.Rights group Peace Now condemned the move, saying the E1 project has “no purpose other than to sabotage a political solution.” The group added that while much of the international community is pushing for peace and a two-state solution, Israel’s government is undermining its own national interests.Currently, Palestinians traveling between Ramallah and Bethlehem must take lengthy detours through Israeli checkpoints. In a future Palestinian state, E1 was expected to provide a direct connection between the two cities.Israel’s approval comes amid escalating settler violence, military operations, and restrictions on Palestinian movement in the West Bank, alongside ongoing conflict in Gaza. Over 700,000 Israeli settlers already live in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. The government also approved 350 new housing units in the settlement of Ashael near Hebron. Smotrich, who wields Cabinet-level authority over settlement policies, has vowed to double the settler population in the West Bank in the coming years.Infrastructure work in E1 could begin within months, with construction of homes starting as early as next year.

Microsoft sees biggest escalation yet of protests over Palestine; "Liberated Zone" created in campus and more

Microsoft sees biggest escalation yet of protests over Palestine;

Microsoft employees occupied company headquarters Tuesday in the most significant protest yet against the tech giant’s contracts with Israel, establishing an encampment they renamed “Martyred Palestinian Children’s Plaza.” Around 50 current and former Microsoft workers, alongside community supporters, took over the East Campus Plaza at the company’s Redmond, Washington headquarters as part of escalating demonstrations by the “No Azure for Apartheid” group. The protesters set up tents, erected memorials to Gaza casualties, and established a negotiating table inviting Microsoft executives to “come to the table” and end partnerships with the Israeli military. The demonstration ended after approximately two hours when police ordered protesters to leave, threatening arrests for trespassing. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the group “was asked to leave, and they left” but provided no additional comment beyond previous statements.

Employees demand complete divestment from Israeli partnerships

The activists distributed a manifesto titled “We will not be cogs in the Israeli genocidal machine: a call for a Worker Intifada,” demanding Microsoft cut all ties with Israel, call for an end to the conflict, pay reparations to Palestinians, and stop discriminating against pro-Palestinian workers. The group has spent over a year pushing Microsoft to end its relationship with Israel, arguing the company’s Azure cloud platform contributes to civilian deaths in Gaza by serving Israeli government and military agencies. Several organizers have been terminated for holding unauthorised campus events and disrupting executive speeches, including interruptions of CEO Satya Nadella’s presentations.

Investigation reveals surveillance concerns amid ongoing worker resistance

The protest follows recent reporting by The Guardian and +972 Magazine revealing Israel’s military surveillance unit stored millions of Palestinian phone calls on Azure servers, with that data helping inform Gaza bombing targets. Microsoft enlisted law firm Covington & Burling to conduct an independent review of these allegations, though the company maintains it has “found no evidence” its technologies have been used to target civilians. The demonstrations were also motivated by the recent targeted killing of prominent Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al-Sharifaccording to protester Hossam Nasr, a former Microsoft employee who was fired last year for organizing a Palestine vigil.

'I've settled six wars': Trump calls Netanyahu 'war hero'; says he is one too

Australia Hits Back At Netanyahu After ‘Weak’ Jibe; ‘Strength Is Not Blowing Up Kids’

US President Donald Trump has hailed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “war hero” for ordering strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, before adding that the same title should apply to himself.Speaking in an interview aired on Tuesday with conservative commentator Mark Levin, Trump praised Netanyahu as a “good man” and credited their joint military efforts against Iran. “He’s a war hero, because we work together. He’s a war hero,” Trump said. “I guess I am too,” he added. The comments came weeks after Israel launched a series of airstrikes in mid-June on key Iranian nuclear sites in Natanz and Isfahan, killing senior military officials and several nuclear scientists. Days later, on 22 June, the United States deployed heavy bombs against Iran’s heavily fortified Fordo facility, buried deep under a mountain. A recent US assessment suggested Fordo had been badly damaged, although the full extent remains uncertain. The MAGA chief also sought to highlight his role as a global mediator. Since taking office in January, Trump claimed credit for easing tensions in conflicts ranging from Rwanda and Congo to India and Pakistan, and Thailand and Cambodia. He further pointed to brokering a ceasefire that ended nearly two weeks of strikes between Israel and Iran.“In the interview, Trump said: ‘I’ve settled six wars, and we did Iran, and I wiped out their total nuclear capability, which they would have used against Israel in two seconds if they had the chance.'”Iran insists its nuclear programme is purely civilian. Experts note that while Tehran’s enrichment capability has been set back significantly, it could potentially rebuild operations at other undisclosed sites.Iran’s Tasnim news agency dismissed Trump’s remarks on Wednesday, calling them “incoherent.”

Mea spokesperson randhir jaiswal (pti)

NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs on Wednesday dismissed concerns raised by Bangladesh’s interim government led by Muhammad Yunusclarifying that India does not permit political activities targeting other countries from its soil and calling Dhaka’s remarks “misplaced.”MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in an official statement: “The Government of India is not aware of any anti-Bangladesh activities by purported members of Awami League in India or of any action that is contrary to Indian law.”He added, “The Government does not allow political activities against other countries to be carried out from Indian soil.”Describing the Yunus government’s statement as “misplaced,” Jaiswal further reflected on Bangladesh’s upcoming polls: “India reiterates its expectation that free, fair and inclusive elections will be held at the earliest in Bangladesh to ascertain the will and mandate of the people.”The reaction came a day after Bangladesh army chief General Waker-uz-Zaman said the military was prepared to assist the interim government in ensuring “free, fair and neutral” general elections scheduled for February next year.In Sheikh Hasina’s absence, former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has emerged as the single largest party after Yunus’ government disbanded Awami League activities through an executive order.Meanwhile, an offshoot of Students Against Discrimination (SAD) – the group that spearheaded protests against Hasina — launched the National Citizen Party (NCP) in February, reportedly with Yunus’ support. The NCP is believed to have developed ties with the far-right Jamaat-e-Islami and other Islamist groups in opposition to the BNP.

From Kejriwal to Lalu Prasad, these are CMs and ministers who did not resign even after arrest

The three bills presented by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament have a provision to remove the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers and Ministers arrested in serious criminal charges for 30 days, which has been strongly opposed by the opposition. Between “rigid” and “misuse” allegations, the bills were sent to a joint parliamentary panel (JPC) on Wednesday. While the ruling side said that the proposed bill offers “a solution for people like Arvind Kejriwal”, opposition parties said it is “against the principles of natural justice”.

Kejriwal, who is the first Chief Minister of India to be arrested, was running the Delhi government from behind bars for at least six months. Senior RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, whose Chief Minister, had faced many corruption matters and punishment, he did not run the government from jail. But he did not step down from himself, but under the pressure of the situation, he was forced to resign.

There are many examples when ministers refused to leave their posts or leave their departments despite the threat of arrest. And there are many who remain the Chief Minister, Union Minister and Minister of State despite serious criminal allegations and despite not being arrested.

Arvind Kejriwal (Delhi)

The most recent and biggest example of this list is Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal. In March 2024, he became the first current Chief Minister of India, who was arrested and sent to jail. He later got bail. After this, he announced to resign on 15 September 2024, so that he was Delhi assembly elections Can promote for He formally resigned on 17 September 2024. After him, the then education minister Atishi was made the Chief Minister.

Lalu Prasad Yadav (Bihar)

Former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav is also a big name of such. He had to withdraw from the post of Chief Minister after arrest and sentence in the fodder scam. Although he himself was not willing to resign, the circumstances forced him. Before leaving the post, he made his wife Rabri Devi the Chief Minister and remained active in state and party politics while behind the screen.

Narayan Rane (Maharashtra)

When Narayan Rane was a MSME minister in the central government, in 2021 he was arrested for some time in the case of making objectionable remarks against the then Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. However, during this time he did not resign from his ministerial post.

Satyaendra Jain (bloth)

Aam Aadmi Party leader Satyendra Jain was a Minister of Health, Home and Public Works Department (PWD) in the Delhi Government. In 2022, he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a corruption case related to money laundering and hawala transactions. Despite arrests and legal proceedings, he remained in the cabinet for about 9 months. Finally in February 2023, after the arrest and resignation of Manish Sisodia, he also left the post of minister.

V Senthil Balaji (Tamil Nadu)

Senior DMK leader and former minister V Senthil Balaji was arrested on 14 June 2023 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on charges of money laundering and corruption. The case was related to the alleged scams made between 2011 and 2015 as Transport Minister. The DMK alleged that the BJP -led central government is implicating opposition leaders with political revenge. After the arrest, his health deteriorated and he had to be hospitalized. On this, his family and supporters said that the arrest was made under inhuman circumstances. His lawyers filed petitions on bail and health in the court several times, which lasted for a long time.

Partha Chatterjee (West Bengal)

Senior Congress (TMC) leader Partha Chatterjee was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in 2022 in the famous cash-for-Jobs (Teacher Recruitment Scam) in West Bengal. He was accused that he had taken an illicit bribe in exchange for teacher appointment in government schools. Even after the arrest, Partha Chatterjee did not immediately resign from his post and the party also defended him in the early stages. But as the pressure increased, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee removed him from the post of minister. Recently, on August 18, the Supreme Court granted him bail.

BJP will not always be in power, bill will also be used against them “

Do you believe divorce should be a public matter?

Dhanashree, who recently spoke on the podcast Spill The Tea, offered a candid and emotional account of the divorce proceedings. She described the day as “deeply emotional” for both families. “Divorce is not something to celebrate. It’s something very sad. Marriage begins with love, but when it ends, it often ends in distrust,” she said, recalling how she broke down when the verdict was announced. What particularly went viral was her criticism of Chahal’s attire at the court hearing. The spinner arrived wearing a black t-shirt with the slogan “Be your own sugar daddy,” a move many perceived as a pointed remark aimed at his ex-wife.“He walked out first, and that whole t-shirt episode unfolded. I wasn’t even aware of it because I left quietly through the back door. But before I realised, people began speculating about me because of that stunt,” Dhanashree said. The fallout has triggered a social media storm, with fans divided over Chahal’s choice of attire and Dhanashree’s blunt revelations. While Dhanashree admitted she felt hurt at that moment, she also said it gave her closure: “That moment gave me the motivation to laugh and move on. It’s over.”Chahal’s cryptic post now adds another layer of intrigue to the public saga.

India succesfully test-fires 'Agni 5': All about the ballistic missile; why Pakistan is on edge

NEW DELHI: India on Wednesday successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) Agni-5 from the integrated test range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha, the defence ministry said. The launch, conducted on August 20, 2025, under the strategic forces command, validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile. Defence officials said the test was part of routine user trials aimed at ensuring the system’s readiness.Developed by the defence research and development organisation (DRDO), Agni-5 is among India’s most advanced long-range missiles with a range of over 5,000 kilometres. Equipped with modern navigation, guidance, warhead and propulsion technologies, it strengthens India’s nuclear deterrence. The ministry said the successful test reaffirms India’s commitment to maintaining a “credible minimum deterrence posture.”

.

Things to know about Agni-5

  • Nuclear-capable ICBM: Agni-5 is a land-based Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) with Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle (MIRV) capability, developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • Extended range: Designed for nuclear use, Agni-5 has a range of over 5,000 kilometres. DRDO is working on an upgraded variant with an expected range of up to 7,500 kilometres.
  • MIRVed test launch: On March 11, 2024, India conducted the first MIRVed test launch of Agni-5 from Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu, validating its ability to carry and release multiple warheads.
  • Warhead capacity: The missile is capable of carrying and firing up to three nuclear warheads simultaneously.
  • Future enhancements: New variants under development aim to integrate bunker-buster bomb technology, expanding the missile’s strike capability against fortified targets.

Why Pakistan is on edgeIndia’s test has raised alarms in Islamabad. The Strategic Vision Institute (SVI), a Pakistan-based think tank, has warned Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and army chief Asim Munir that India’s missile programme poses “serious risks” to regional stability. The SVI noted that India’s missile development accelerated after it joined the missile technology control regime (MTCR) in 2016, gaining access to advanced systems. It warned that with future variants exceeding 8,000 km range, India could potentially target cities as far as Washington, Moscow and Beijing.Pakistan’s concerns also extend to India’s growing naval nuclear arsenal, including submarine-launched ballistic missiles. According to the think tank, the Agni-5 test signals India’s global strategic ambitions and calls for international pressure on New Delhi to “refrain from destabilising moves” and pursue dialogue instead.
