NEW DELHI: A day after Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi concluded his two-day visit to India, China’s ambassador to India Xu Feihong voiced strong opposition to the United States’ tariff measures against New Delhi and emphasized the need for closer cooperation between India and China.“US has imposed tariffs of up to 50% on India and even threatened for more. China firmly opposes it. Silence only emboldens the bully. China will firmly stand with India,” Xu said, underscoring Beijing’s willingness to support New Delhi against unilateral trade restrictions. The envoy stressed that the partnership between India and China is crucial for regional and global development. “For two neighbouring countries of such size, unity and cooperation are the only way to achieve common development. China and India’s friendship benefits Asia. We are the double engines of economic growth in Asia. India and China unity benefits the world at large. India and China have the responsibility to take the lead in promoting an equal and orderly multipolar world,” he said.Xu further noted that trust-building is essential in the bilateral relationship. “China and India should enhance strategic mutual trust, and avoid mutual suspicion. Both countries are partners, not rivals. We should manage differences through dialogue,” he said. “We are willing to work with India to enhance development of our strategies and enlarge the cake of cooperation. We welcome all Indian commodities to enter the Chinese market.”Boundary talks and consensusXu’s remarks followed the 24th round of the Special Representatives’ dialogue on the boundary question, which Wang Yi co-chaired with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on August 19. The Chinese minister also held bilateral talks with external affairs minister S Jaishankar on August 18 and called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Xu highlighted ten points of consensus reached in the talks, noting that both sides spoke positively of the progress made since the 23rd round and the implementation of the leader-level consensus reached in Kazan. “The two sides reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas, emphasized handling the issue properly through friendly consultations, to promote overall development of the China-India bilateral relationship,” Xu said.He added that both sides agreed to “take a political perspective of the overall bilateral relationship while seeking a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable framework for settlement of the boundary question in accordance with the Agreement on Political Parameters and Guiding Principles for Settlement of the China-India Boundary Question signed in 2005.”Among the key outcomes, Xu said the two sides agreed to set up an Expert Group under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on the China-India border affairs (WMCC) framework to explore “Early Harvest” solutions on boundary delimitation in appropriate sectors. They also agreed to create a Working Group under the WMCC framework to advance effective border management.Further, Xu noted that the two sides agreed to “create General-Level Mechanisms in the Eastern and Middle Sectors, in addition to the existing General-Level Mechanism in the Western Sector, and hold the next round of General-Level Mechanism meeting in the Western Sector at an early date.”Trade and river cooperationOn economic and trade ties, Xu said the two countries agreed to reopen the three traditional border trading markets — Renqinggang-Changgu, Pulan-Gunji, and Jiuba-Namgya — and to hold the 25th round of SR talks in China in 2026.Both sides also discussed cooperation on trans-border rivers. 'Bright MPs, insecure leadership': PM Modi's dig at Rahul Gandhi as Monsoon session ends in deadlock - Report

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced regret over Parliament’s repeated disruptions as the Monsoon session ended on Thursday with low productivity. PM Modi reportedly took a veiled swipe at the Congress leadership, accusing it of sidelining its own younger MPs out of “insecurity.”According to PTI sources, PM Modi made the comments during the customary tea meeting in Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s office, a tradition marking the end of every session. This time, however, opposition leaders stayed away, underlining the deadlock that dominated this session’s proceedings.Though PM Modi did not name Rahul Gandhi, his remarks were widely seen as directed at the Congress leader spearheading protests against the Election Commission’s voter list revision in Bihar. The bright and young MPs of the Congress do not get to participate in discussions due to the “insecurity” of its leadership, PM Modi reportedly said, according to PTI sources.PM Modi also expressed disappointment that key legislation, including the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, had been cleared without debate amid the uproar. He nevertheless praised the gaming ban law for its “far-reaching impact,” noting the social harm caused by real-money online games. He lamented that Parliament missed the chance to discuss several important bills, saying disruptions robbed the House of meaningful debate.Boycott, barbs, and blameWith opposition benches empty at the Speaker’s tea, BJP leaders remarked on Congress’ absence, suggesting the party had grown difficult to engage with. Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju said opposition MPs might have been “too embarrassed” by their behaviour during the session to attend.Rijiju also alleged that Congress negotiators often reached understandings with the government in pre-session talks but failed to follow through, hinting at “pressure from the top.”Throughout the session, the INDIA bloc staged noisy protests inside and outside Parliament, accusing the BJP of “vote theft” through the Bihar electoral roll revision. The government, however, pressed ahead, passing multiple bills despite the din.Monsoon session, which concluded on Thursday, saw frequent disruptions that overshadowed legislative business, with the House losing over 84 hours to forced adjournments, the highest in the 18th Lok Sabha. The month-long session that started on July 21 had 21 sittings with 37 hours and 7 minutes of effective business, according to the Lok Sabha secretariat.Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that all parties had decided at the beginning of the session that discussions would be held for 120 hours in this session.“The Business Advisory Committee also agreed to this. But due to continuous deadlock and planned disruptions, we could barely work for 37 hours in this session,” he underlined.

US-EU transatlantic trade deal: 15% tariff imposed on most EU goods, pharma and aircraft exempted while wine and spirits remain in limbo

US-EU transatlantic trade deal: 15% tariff imposed on most EU goods, pharma and aircraft exempted while wine and spirits remain in limbo

The US and European Union officials on Thursday announced a written framework for their long-discussed trade deal, laying down a 15% tariff on 70% of EU exports to the US while leaving several critical sectors unresolved. The agreement, made public as a 3½-page text, was described by both sides as a political commitment rather than a legally binding treaty, AP reported. The document, far shorter than typical trade accords that often run into hundreds of pages, sets out limited but significant provisions. These include a 15% import tax on most European goods, a zero tariff on US cars and other industrial exports to Europe, and exemptions for aircraft and aircraft parts, generic pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical ingredients. Exemptions for other sectors deemed essential to both economies are expected in later stages.Wine and spirits, which had enjoyed zero tariffs since 1997, were left out of the exemptions and remain subject to the new levy. EU chief trade negotiator Maros Sefcovic admitted the bloc had not yet secured relief in that area but stressed that “doors are not closed forever” and that further talks would continue. Proposals to carve out tariff rate quotas for EU steel were also left pending. The Associated Press reported that European officials described the pact as only a “first step in a process that can be further expanded.”The 15% tariff marks a sharp increase from pre-Trump trade levels, when duties averaged in the low single digits. The costs, collected on the US side, could either be absorbed by American importers or passed on to consumers through higher prices. Some EU businesses and member governments have voiced unease, warning that Brussels conceded too much.European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen defended the agreement, framing it as a safeguard against Trump’s threatened 27.5% tariff on EU car exports. She said the deal provides “quick relief” and opens a path for exemptions in additional sectors. “Faced with a challenging situation, we have delivered for our member states and industry and restored clarity and coherence to transatlantic trade,” she said. “This is not the end of the process.”Sefcovic echoed her view, noting that the alternative was “a trade war with sky high tariffs.” He added, “It builds confidence. It brings stability.”Beyond tariffs, the pact also includes nonbinding EU commitments to purchase $750 billion worth of US energy and for EU companies to invest $600 billion in the American economy, based on projections compiled by the European Commission. Both sides acknowledged that implementation would hinge on follow-up negotiations in the months ahead.

Should India and Pakistan resume bilateral cricket series in the future?

India vs Pakistan: Bilateral freeze remains

The ministry statement made it clear that there will be no resumption of bilateral sporting ties. “In so far as bilateral sports events in each other’s country are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan. Nor will we permit Pakistani teams to play in India,” the policy read. This effectively rules out any possibility of an India-Pakistan cricket series on home soil or away, a scenario that has been off the table since 2012-13. The two nations have since faced off only in ICC or ACC events, such as the World Cup, T20 World Cup and Asia Cup.Multilateral participation protectedWhile bilateral ties remain frozen, India’s participation in global and continental events remains assured. “We will abide by the Olympic Charter,” the official said, underlining India’s responsibility as a sporting nation to not obstruct international events due to political considerations. This means Indian teams and athletes will continue to compete in tournaments that also feature Pakistan — whether abroad or at home. Similarly, Pakistani athletes will be able to take part in multilateral events hosted by India. The announcement reaffirms India’s dual stance: no bilateral sporting revival with Pakistan, but no obstruction of multilateral tournaments either. For Indian cricket fans, it means that the highly anticipated Asia Cup, where India and Pakistan could clash three times, remains firmly on the calendar.
