'Eliminating all retaliatory tariffs on US goods': Canada's big announcement; move comes day after Carney-Trump talks

Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday announced that Canada is dropping retaliatory tariffs on US goods, aligning with Washington’s recent decision to exempt products covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).Speaking a day after a call with US President Donald TrumpPM Carney told reporters that starting September 1, Canada would be “eliminating all Canadian tariffs on American goods” covered under the pact.He added this move comes as both countries “intensify” discussions on a broader trade deal.“Canada currently has the best trade deal with the United States. And while it’s different from what we had before, it’s still better than that of any other country,” Carney said.“Canada and the United States have reestablished free trade for the vast majority of our goods. Canada will retain our tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos as we work intensively to resolve the issues there,” he added. With the USMCA scheduled for review in 2026, Carney described the pact as a “unique advantage” for Canada, noting that the US is increasingly charging other countries for market access. The Canadian PM noted that America’s commitment to the agreement ensures Canadian exporters still benefit from one of the lowest average US tariff rates, with more than 85% of bilateral trade remaining tariff-free.Canadian and Mexican firms also continue to receive preferential access under the USMCA, AP reported. The retaliatory tariffs were introduced under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after Washington imposed duties on Canadian goods. However, the Trump administration later exempted USMCA-covered products, prompting Ottawa’s latest move. While most Canadian and Mexican imports remain protected by the trade pact, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has signaled fresh uncertainty, saying, “I think the president is absolutely going to renegotiate the USMCA.”Earlier, Trump also signed an executive order raising tariffs on Canadian imports to the United States from 25% to 35%.The tariff applies to all items not covered by the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. A 40% transshipment levy would apply to goods rerouted through another country to avoid these tariffs. At the same time, Canada still faces sector-specific US levies outside the deal that continue to weigh on the industry.Since March, Trump implemented various Canadian tariffs: 25% on all goods excluding potash and energy products, 10% on energy resources including potash, 50% on steel and aluminium imports, and 25% on automotive products.Trade experts note that preserving the free trade pact will be crucial for both Canada and Mexico, with more than 75% of Canadian exports and 80% of Mexican exports heading to the US.

Coinbase CEO says he fired some employees who didn't adopt AI, adds that engineers must…

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong revealed he terminated employees who failed to adopt artificial intelligence tools after issuing a company-wide mandate requiring engineers to integrate AI into their workflow by a specific deadline. Speaking on the “Cheeky Pint” podcast Wednesday, Armstrong described going “rogue” when told AI adoption would take one to two quarters. Instead, he posted directly in the company’s Slack channel demanding all engineers onboard AI tools within the week or attend a mandatory Saturday meeting to explain their resistance.“If not, I’m hosting a meeting on Saturday with everyone who hasn’t done it and I’d like to meet with you to understand why,” Armstrong said during the podcast interview. When Saturday arrived, a small group of non-compliant employees joined the call. While some had legitimate reasons like returning from travel, others did not. “Some of them didn’t, and they got fired,” Armstrong stated bluntly.

CEO’s “heavy-handed” approach reflects growing workplace AI pressure across tech industry

The Coinbase chief executive described his confrontational tactics as “heavy-handed” but necessary to signal AI’s critical importance to the company’s future. His goal is achieving 50% AI-written code by quarter’s end, supported by monthly “AI speed run” training sessions.Armstrong’s aggressive AI enforcement mirrors broader industry trends. Tech giants and multiple CEOs have similarly pressured employees to integrate AI tools into daily operations, emphasizing AI adoption as essential for competitive advantage. However, Armstrong acknowledged limits to AI reliance, particularly for financial systems. “You don’t want people vibe-coding these systems moving money,” he cautioned, stressing the need for human oversight and code reviews. The crypto exchange has expanded AI implementation beyond engineering, with design teams “using it heavily” and exploring AI’s role in executive decision-making. Armstrong personally uses AI extensively in his CEO role.

10% markup: Who’s really 'profiteering'? How US profits from selling weapons to Europe for Ukraine war

Trump Makes A Fool Out Of Europeans? Charges EU 10% Extra For U.S. Weapons For Ukraine | Watch

File photo

The United States has accused India of “profiteering” from Russian oil, even as Washington itself openly admits to making money by selling weapons to Europe, which are then resold to Ukraine at a 10% markup.Speaking to Fox News, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged that the US supplies weapons to Europe, which in turn sells them to Ukraine with a 10% markup. “I think President Trump is very vigilant right now. We sell weapons to the Europeans, who then sell them to the Ukrainians. And President Trump takes a 10% markup on the weapons. So, perhaps, this 10% will cover the cost of air cover,” he said.Yet, in a separate interview with CNBC, Bessent criticised India for buying Russian oil and refining it into petroleum products that are exported further. “They are just profiteering. They are reselling. This is what I would call the Indian arbitrage — buying cheap Russian oil, reselling it as product,” he said, claiming that Indian refiners have made $16 billion in excess profits and alleging that “some of the richest families in India” benefited from it.Secondary tariffs? The US has floated the idea of “secondary tariffs” against countries like India that continue importing Russian crude, though such measures have not been extended to China — despite Beijing being a major buyer of Russian energy. According to Bessent, the Trump administration views China differently because it was a Russian customer long before the Ukraine conflict.Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs on Indian goods in July, even as there were hopes of an interim India-US trade deal that would have otherwise helped avoid elevated tariffs. A few days later, he imposed another 25 per cent tariff, taking the total to 50 per cent, citing India’s continued imports of Russian oil.‘First security guarantees, then Putin summit’Bessent’s remarks also came against the backdrop of high-level talks in Washington between US President Donald TrumpUkraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders, where the focus was on creating a framework for security guarantees. “We want to have an understanding of the security guarantees architecture within seven to 10 days,” Zelensky said, stressing the need for clarity on which countries would step up at critical moments.India calls out ‘double standards’Meanwhile, India has pushed back against Trump’s threat to “substantially” raise tariffs on Indian goods over its continued oil imports from Russia, calling the sanctions “unjustified and unreasonable.”In a strongly worded statement, the ministry of external affairs defended India’s energy strategy, stating that its crude oil purchases from Russia are “a necessity compelled by global market conditions” and not a political endorsement of Moscow.“India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,” the MEA said, while highlighting that the US and European Union have continued trade with Russia, including in energy and critical commodities, despite publicly opposing the Ukraine conflict. The MEA also highlighted what it termed “double standards,” pointing out that the EU’s trade with Russia in 2024 was significantly higher than India’s. EU imports of Russian LNG, for instance, reached a record 16.5 million tonnes. The statement added that the US continues to import uranium, palladium, and fertilizers from Russia. India’s Russian oil imports increased from just 0.2% of total imports pre-war to over 35% in recent months, making Russia its top supplier.

India's Asia Cup 2025 squad: Brad Haddin stunned by Shreyas Iyer's omission - 'Thought he was going to be captain'

NEW DELHI: Former Australia wicketkeeper and Punjab Kings assistant coach Brad Prize has described Shreyas Iyer’s omission from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad as an “extraordinary selection”, admitting he was left baffled by the decision of the Indian selectors.Iyer, 30, was not included in the 15-member squad announced by BCCI chief selector Ajit agarkar on Tuesday, nor was he named among the standbys. The exclusion of the in-form batter, who recently guided Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final, has sent ripples across the cricketing fraternity.

Extraordinary selection,” Haddin said on the Willow Talk podcast.Iyer’s credentials in franchise cricket underline the shock. In IPL 2025, he amassed 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07, carrying Punjab Kings to only their second-ever final. Colon Cancer: Study reveals THIS vegetable can lower your colorectal cancer risk by 20%

Colorectal cancer, more popularly known as colon cancer, is one of the most common types of cancer in both men and women around the world. It’s a type of cancer that develops in the tissues of the colon or rectum. It starts in the large intestine (colon) and often develops from small, noncancerous clumps of cells called polyps. It’s one of the most common types of cancer worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Thanks to obesity and alcohol consumption, bowel cancer has become the primary cause of the rising death toll among young adults. It is getting increasingly common, especially among younger adults. In recent years, doctors have witnessed a disturbing trend linked with colon cancer, which traditionally is viewed as a disease of older adults, but is increasingly striking people under 50.However, new research offers a hopeful twist toward the prevention of this type of cancer: adding just 40 to 60 grams daily of cruciferous vegetables can reduce colon cancer risk by 20-26%.

Five Effective Ways to Detoxify Your Gut Health

What does the research say?

A large review published in BMC Gastroenterology analyzed nearly 640,000 individuals and highlights how a simple dietary habit (think of including a few vegetables in your regular diet) could deliver big preventive benefits. For the study, researchers reviewed 17 large studies, involving over 639,500 people, among whom 97,595 had colorectal cancer. The results? People consuming the highest amounts of cruciferous vegetables (think broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, and Brussels sprouts) had a 20-26% lower risk of colorectal cancer compared to those eating the least.

Colon cancer (27)

They found that consuming around 40-60 grams daily was associated with a 20% lower risk of colon cancer. However, benefits plateaued beyond 60 grams; so more isn’t necessarily better. These vegetables are rich in phytochemicals such as flavonoids, fiber, vitamin C, carotenoids, and glucosinolates, which break down into protective agents like sulforaphane when crushed or chewed.

Why (and how) these vegetables work against colon cancer

Cruciferous vegetables are nutritional powerhouses packed with fiber, vitamin C, carotenoids, and flavonoids. But their true anti-cancer star is sulforaphane, a compound produced when these veggies are chopped or chewed. Sulforaphane and related compounds called glucosinolates kickstart the body’s detox systems, reduce inflammation, and repair cellular damage – key elements in cancer prevention.Adding to the broader picture, other research supports different parts of the plant-based diet:Plant-based dietary patterns overall showed a 46% reduced risk of colon cancer and 73% lower risk of rectal cancer in one study. Moreover, as per the American Institute for Cancer Researchwhole grains may lower colorectal cancer risk by around 17%.

How to add broccoli to your daily diet

Broccoli, amongst all cruciferous vegetables, is a nutritional powerhouse, offering a wide range of health benefits due to its rich content of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. Apart from potentially helping with cancer prevention, broccoli may help with heart health and digestive health, among other things. Here are some simple ideas on how to incorporate cruciferous vegetables into your regular diet:Aim for 40-60g daily: Roughly half a cup of chopped broccoli or its equivalent of cruciferous veggies.Cook smartly: Light steaming preserves key compounds like sulforaphane while enhancing absorption.Add color and variety: Rotate among broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and kale for broader benefits.Pair with a balanced diet: Focus on whole grains, pulses, and fruits while reducing red and processed meats.Stay consistent: These are preventive strategies best practiced daily.

Broccoli (4)

In case you’re looking to add some goodness to all your meals, then you can consider stirring steamed broccoli into omelets or scrambled eggs for breakfast, or tossing chopped cabbage or kale into salads or wraps for lunch. For dinner, think of adding cauliflower florets to stir-fries or pasta dishes. In fact, you can also build a healthy snacking habit by munching on roasted Brussels sprouts or kale chips. Aiming for half a cup daily means just one thoughtful inclusion per meal. That small shift can be a big deal for your gut. Finally, no food is a magic cure, but adding more cruciferous vegetables to your plate, especially in the range of 40-60 grams daily, can significantly reduce your colorectal cancer risk by around 20%. Combined with other healthy habits, such as screening, exercise, and a rich variety of plant-based foods, you’re setting yourself up for stronger, more vital living.Remember: Every chopped floret counts. A little broccoli today could go a long way toward a healthier tomorrow.

Ethanol-blended petrol push: PIL in Supreme Court challenges nationwide sale of E20; claims 'engines are suffering' | India News

Ethanol-blended petrol push: PIL in Supreme Court challenges nationwide sale of E20; claims 'engines are suffering'

NEW DELHI: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court against the nationwide rollout of 20% Ethanol Blended Petrol (E20), claiming that millions of motorists are being forced to use fuel their vehicles are not designed for.The plea, filed by advocate Akshay, has sought directions to the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas to ensure ethanol-free petrol (E0) is made available at all fuel stations across the country. The PIL argues that cars and two-wheelers manufactured before 2023 and even some newer BS-VI models, are not compatible with high ethanol blends like E20.“Direct the respondents to ensure that consumers are informed about ethanol compatibility of their vehicles at the time of fuel dispensing. Engines are suffering corrosion, fuel efficiency is dropping, and repair bills are mounting, while insurance companies are rejecting claims for damage caused by ethanol fuel,” the plea stated. The petitioner further sought clear labelling of ethanol content at all petrol pumps and dispensing units so that consumers are fully informed about what they are purchasing. The petition highlighted that global practices differ sharply. In countries like the US and EU, ethanol-free petrol continues to be widely available, and pumps clearly display the ethanol content. In India, however, only ethanol-blended petrol is sold, and there is no disclosure of composition at dispensing units, the plea added.

India’s E20 Push

India has accelerated its transition to E20 fuel, a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol, as part of its efforts to cut carbon emissions and reduce dependence on imported crude oil.The nationwide rollout, originally planned for 2030, has now been advanced to 2025. While the government has set ambitious targets, questions remain over the availability of compatible vehicles, supply logistics, and consumer awareness.

Is all petrol in India now E20?

Not yet. Many petrol pumps are still offering E10 (10% ethanol), while E20 is being gradually introduced in select regions. The government’s aim is to achieve 100% E20 availability across India by 2025.

How is E20 different from E10 or E15?

The number indicates the ethanol percentage in the fuel blend. For example, E10 has 10% ethanol, E15 has 15%, and E20 contains 20%. The higher the ethanol content, the lower the reliance on crude oil imports.

What impact does E20 have on vehicles?

According to several reports, many motorists have expressed concerns about the impact of E20 fuel, particularly on fuel efficiency. While ethanol has lower energy density than petrol, the mileage impact is relatively small. For E10 vehicles tuned for E20, the drop is just 1-2% . In other vehicles, the reduction could range between 3-6% and even that can be minimised with proper engine tuning, as reported by ANI.

What Government said?

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued a statement rejecting all viral social media posts alleging that E20 causes a major fall in fuel efficiency. Calling the claims “factually incorrect,” the ministry said they lack any scientific backing or expert validation.

August 22 marks the 35th birthday of wide receiver Adam Thielen. He played nine seasons for the Minnesota Vikings. He even played college football for the Minnesota State Mavericks. August 22 also marks the day that the Vikings reportedly expressed interest in reacquiring their former wideout from the Carolina Panthers. According to NFL Insider Adam Schefter on X(formerly Twitter), the Vikings inquired about a trade for Panthers WR Adam Thielen(as per league sources).
