Stock market today: Nifty50 and BSE Sensexthe Indian equity benchmark indices, opened in green on Monday. While Nifty50 went above 24,600, BSE Sensex was up over 150 points. At 9:18 AM, Nifty50 was trading at 24,627.85, up 63 points or 0.25%. BSE Sensex was at 80,771.61, up 172 points or 0.21%.Market experts remain wary and suggest maintaining protective positions with a downward outlook until definitive reversal indicators appear. Individual stock movements are expected to persist as more companies release their quarterly results.VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited says, “In the near-term the market is in unchartered territory. A clear direction will emerge on news surrounding the US-India trade deal happening after the next round of trade negotiations. A deal with a tariff of 20% or below will be positive from the market perspective. If this doesn’t happen, and the 25% tariff remains, the market is likely to drift down since it will impact India’s growth and corporate earnings making it difficult to justify the current elevated valuations.”“From the global market perspective, indications are that a rate cut from the Fed in the September FOMC meeting is likely after the latest jobs report indicating declines in job additions in July and downward revisions in the jobs created in May and June. Clearly, the U.S. economy is slowing down and Fed is likely to respond with a rate cut in September. With the inflationary impact of the tariffs kicking in, a stagflationnary scenario for the US cannot be ruled out. The market will respond to incoming data and evolving outlook.”Asian equities continued their downward trend for the seventh consecutive session following disappointing US employment data, which led to a decline in stocks and increased speculation about Federal Reserve rate reductions.US stocks fell on Friday, with the S&P recording its largest daily percentage drop in over two months, triggered by new US tariffs affecting multiple trading partners and an unexpectedly poor jobs report.Gold prices decreased on Monday as traders took profits following a significant increase in the previous session, after disappointing US employment data strengthened predictions of a Federal Reserve interest rate reduction in September.Oil prices continued to decrease on Monday following OPEC+’s agreement to another substantial production increase in September, whilst worries about economic slowdown in the United States, the world’s largest oil consumer, contributed to downward pressure.Foreign portfolio investors net sold shares worth Rs 3,366 crore on Friday. DIIs were net buyers at Rs 3,187 crore.(Disclaimer: Recommendations and views on the stock market and other asset classes given by experts are their own. American Grandmaster (GM) Hans Niemann has ignited fresh controversy in the chess world with a striking statement on social media, contrasting India’s growing support for chess talent with what he claims is a deeply flawed system in the United States.“The Indian government and chess federation treats their players like superstars: supporting their development from an early age and rewarding them for their victories. While the American chess federation sabotages their own. The consequences will be very clear in 5–10 years,” 22-year-old Niemann wrote on X.His comment comes just days after a landmark achievement in Indian chess.

As the fifth and final Test between India and England heads into its last day at The Oval, England stand on the brink of a series-clinching victory. Needing just 35 more runs with four wickets in hand, the hosts are firm favourites to close out a 3-1 win. Meanwhile, India require a near-miracle to turn the match around and level the series.Rain and bad light brought an early end to play on Day 4, with England cruising at 339/6, thanks to a dominant 195-run partnership between Joe Root (105) and Harry Brook (111). The pair dismantled India’s bowling attack and made the target of 374 look well within reach.

Is Sunil Gavaskar’s assessment of India being the weaker team valid?

He added firmly: “You could say that, but at the end of the day, it’s the result that matters. Unless India win this game and level the series, you have to admit that England are the better team. It doesn’t matter how many sessions you’ve won.”It’s a sobering assessment for an Indian side that has shown flashes of dominance throughout the series but struggled to sustain pressure when it mattered most. With only one day left and little margin for error, India will need a sensational bowling performance or some help from the weather to salvage a draw.

Will RBI cut rates? Most economists expect pause

MUMBAI: Economists are split on whether RBI’s monetary policy committee will continue cutting rates, but most expect it to pause at the August 6 meeting to assess the impact of earlier reductions. Some economists point to softening data. Industrial production as measured by its index slowed to a 10-month low of 1.5%. Credit growth is also weaker, including a marked drop in home loans. Also supporting a rate cut is inflation running below projections.Soumya Kanti Ghosh, group chief economist at SBI there’s no use in holding off on cutting interest rates in Aug. If inflation is going to stay low and steady even in FY27, the central bank shouldn’t wait. He warned that if RBI wrongly assumes that low inflation is temporary and decides not to cut rates, inflation stays low for a long time, and the economy keeps slowing down. A cut now, he added, could support demand during the upcoming festive season. “A frontloaded rate cut in Aug could bring early Diwali… Even festive season is frontloaded in FY26… Empirical evidence suggests a strong pick-up in credit growth whenever festive season has been early and has been preceded with a rate cut.”Others urge caution. Having already lowered the repo rate by 100 basis points (1 percentage point) over three consecutive meetings, RBI may prefer to pause, allowing the effects of previous cuts to ripple through the economy. A note by CareEdge Ratings noted that while inflation is easing and external risks to growth are rising, the central bank may choose to wait. It expects RBI to maintain its 6.4% growth forecast while slightly reducing its inflation outlook for FY26. The US tariff uncertainty is pushing the RBI panel toward a cautious, measured approach, most likely opting for a pause or a “dovish hold” in August while leaving the door open for future policy action.Barclays’ India chief economist Aastha Gudwani also expects the central bank to stay put in Aug. “While this backdrop is conducive for further monetary easing, we believe it is not yet compelling enough to deliver a fourth straight rate cut, and exhaust the policy arsenal,” she said. Gudwani expects a “dovish pause” with RBI retaining a neutral stance and possibly delivering a final 25bps cut in October.

HC stays conviction of vax scientist for wife's suicide; cites 'national interest'; allows returns to duty

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand HC has suspended the conviction and five-year rigorous imprisonment of a vaccine scientist found guilty of abetment to suicide following the death of his wife in 2015.Justice Ravindra Maithani granted the relief to Dr Akash Yadav during the pendency of his appeal, saying his role was “undoubtedly essential for public health and national interest” and his conviction had rendered him ineligible to continue contributing to vaccine programmes.Yadav, a vaccinologist with a PhD in biotechnology from IIT-Kgp, had been working as a senior manager at Indian Immunologicals Limited, a PSU that makes human and veterinary vaccines and plays a critical role in national immunisation efforts. tnnCourt allows scientist to resume duties at IIL Yadav was convicted by a sessions court under IPC section 306 for abetment to suicide but was acquitted under section 304-B (dowry death) and the Dowry Prohibition Act.He married on May 7, 2015. His wife, who was employed at Pantnagar University, was taken to her maternal home by her brother on July 4, 2015, while Yadav was working in Hyderabad. She resumed her duties but died by suicide on Dec 14, 2015. In her suicide note, she stated that her husband would be responsible for her death. Yadav was arrested on May 11, 2017, and after spending more than three months in jail, he got bail on Aug 28. On Jan 21 this year, the sessions judge of Rudrapur sentenced him to five-year RI and a fine of Rs 20,000 under Section 306.After being granted bail, Yadav filed an interim application under section 389(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, seeking suspension of his conviction. He submitted that because of the conviction, he had become disqualified from working with Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL) and was unable to resume his scientific duties. His counsel argued that the case met the criteria for exceptional circumstances, as the conviction had a direct impact on “work of national importance.”Justice Maithani noted that an appellate court can suspend a conviction if failure to do so would result in injustice or irreversible consequences. He cited the Supreme Court rulings in Navjot Singh Sidhu vs State of Punjab (2007) and Rama Narang vs Ramesh Narang (1995) and said that courts must examine whether maintaining the conviction would unfairly affect a person’s professional standing or public interest responsibilities. The bench observed, “This was a greater issue of public health and national interest. In light of the afore-stated reasons, the court was of the view that this was a fit case in which the order of conviction as well as execution of sentence, appealed against, should be suspended.”The high court suspended both the conviction and sentence during the appeal’s pendency, allowing Yadav to resume his duties at IIL.

'Settled a war a month': Trump again takes credit for India-Pakistan ceasefire; claims 'ending 5 wars' globally

NEW DELHI: US President Donald Trump once again on Sunday repeated his claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, along with ending several other global conflicts. In post on Truth Social, Trump responded to radio host and author Charlamagne Tha God saying the host knew “nothing” about his achievements, including “just ending 5 Wars, including a 31 year bloodbath between Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, where Seven Million people have died, and there was no end in sight.”Trump added, “He didn’t know that, or India and Pakistan or, wiping out Iran’s nuclear capabilities, or closing the horrendous open Border, or creating the greatest economy.”Speaking to Newsmax a day earlier, Trump claimed to have “settled a lot of wars,” including India and Pakistan.“One of the wars—India, Pakistan, nuclear,” he said. He also cited conflicts in Thailand and Cambodia, and Congo and Rwanda, saying many were resolved through trade pressure, reported PTI.“I said ‘listen, you guys are going to fight. You can fight all you want. I mean, just fight your hearts out. But we’re not doing a trade deal’. All of a sudden they end up not doing a war.”Trump added, “I settled a lot of wars. I think I settled averaging about a war a month. But, you know, we’re saving millions of lives.”Last week, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt supported Trump’s claim, saying he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. “Trump has now ended conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia,” she said at a briefing. She claimed Trump has “brokered, on average, about one peace deal or ceasefire per month” in his six months in office.Since May 10, Trump has claimed multiple times that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire after US-mediated talks. However, officials have firmly denied any US involvement in the recent ceasefire. Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Parliament that no foreign leader urged India to stop Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that killed 26 people.External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said there was “no third-party intervention” and dismissed any link between the ceasefire and trade. “Prime Minister Modi and Trump did not have any phone calls between April 22, when the Pahalgam terror attack took place, and June 16,” Jaishankar said in the Rajya Sabha as quoted by PTI.

Gurgaon horror: Wife plots husband’s murder with lover, 3 others; all arrested

NEW DELHI: Police in Gurugram have arrested five people, including a woman and her neighbour, for allegedly murdering her husband and concealing his body. The victim, Vikram (37), was a resident of Dundahera village and originally hailed from Nawada in Bihar. His wife, Soni Devi (35), was reportedly in a relationship with the main accused, her neighbour Ravindra (34).According to police, during questioning, Vikram’s wife Soni Devi confessed that she and the main accused, her neighbour Ravinder (34), conspired to kill her husband after her daughter discovered an obscene video of them on Ravinder’s phone and informed Vikram. Investigators said the duo researched murder methods online before executing the plan.Soni Devi had initially filed a missing complaint for her husband at Udyog Vihar police station on July 28. She filed another complaint on July 31 alleging that Ravindra had raped her in March while her husband was away for work. She claimed that Ravindra had made a video of the incident and threatened that if she told anyone about it, he would make the clip public.Following the initial investigation, police arrested Ravindra, who allegedly confessed to murdering Vikram. Two other men, Manish (19) and Fariyaad (20) were also taken into custody for reportedly assisting in the crime. All three were remanded to five days’ police custody on Saturday.Additionally, Ravindra’s uncle, Santarpal (60), was arrested the same day for helping bury Vikram’s body. He, too, was sent to five days’ custody on Sunday. Soni Devi, meanwhile, has been sent to judicial remand. It was during interrogation when Ravindra claimed that he and the woman had been in a relationship, according to a police spokesperson.During questioning, Ravindra told police that on July 26, he and his accomplices forcibly pulled Vikram into a car while he was returning home from work. They strangled him with a rope and later buried his body near Mohammadpur Jharsa village. Based on Ravindra’s disclosure, the body was recovered from the burial site.Police said Soni Devi admitted to having been in a relationship with Ravindra for about a year. She revealed that Ravindra had recorded an obscene video of them, which her daughter accidentally found on his phone and later informed Vikram.Police said both Ravindra and Soni Devi had actively researched online to plan the murder. “Both the accused, Ravindra and Soni Devi, watched various methods on the Internet and YouTube to kill Vikram and dispose of the body after the murder,” said a police spokesperson. As part of the plan, Ravindra approached his uncle, Santarpal, who looks after cattle in Mohammadpur Jharsa village.”Ravindra, along with his friends, then killed Vikram and his uncle helped him to bury the body in a pit which was already dug by Santarpal on Ravindra’s instructions,” the official added.Investigators also confirmed that Soni Devi remained in regular contact with Ravindra by phone during this entire episode. “In order to mislead the police, she first filed a missing report of her husband on July 28, while the woman knew that her husband had been murdered on July 26 and his body had been buried. We are questioning the accused,” the spokesperson said.

NEW DELHI: Assam chief ministerNAIHMANTA Biswa sarma on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhicalling him ‘anti-national’ and accusing him of supporting only Muslims from Bangladesh and Pakistan, as reported by news agency PTI. “Rahul Gandhi is an anti-India person. He is only with Bangladeshi and Pakistani Muslims. He is not with Indian Hindus, not even with Indian Muslims. Rahul Gandhi is an anti-national personality,” Sarma alleged. He did not provide any specific reasons for labelling Rahul Gandhi, the current Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, as anti-national.Just days before, Rahul Gandhi had criticized CM Sarma during his visit to Guwahati. Speaking at a party event in Chaygaon, Gandhi accused the Assam chief minister of acting like a ‘king’ and predicted that he would eventually end up in jail due to corruption charges. “He thinks he is a ‘raja’, but he will not be in power for long. He will end up in jail — not because Congress wants it, but because the people of Assam will send him there for corruption.”In response, Sarma dismissed the allegations with a strong reply with words and a hand gesture “Thenga” during a late-night press briefing. He stated that unlike Gandhi, he is a true son of Assam, raised by its soil and people. He accused the Congress of being stuck in outdated thinking and added, “The joke is on him.”
