Cricket is seen as a religion in India and India is considered to be a very strong team in this sport at present, however India has also established its position in other sports like badminton, boxing, wrestling.
India (India) is celebrating its 76th independence anniversary this year. The country got independence on 15th August 1947 and since then India has been touching new heights every day, India has established itself as a warrior and a go-getter in every field. Today India will be counted among the countries which are touching new dimensions of success every day. India has shown its strength in the world of sports along with other fields and has increased the pride of India around the world. Last year in Tokyo, the capital of Japan Olympic Games (Olympic Games) was held. India won seven medals in these Games and gave their best ever performance. India has achieved a lot in the world of sports since independence and continues to do so.
Cricket is worshiped like a religion in this country. India has achieved a lot in this sport since independence and is currently seen as a world power. But cricket is not the only sport where India has shone. India has shown its strength in many other sports and today the situation is such that Indian players are considered strong contenders in these sports.
Won 3 world cups in cricket
Cricket was not so dominant when India became independent. India winning the match was also big news, but everything changed with time. India won its first Test series away from home in 1967–68, also in New Zealand. After this India progressed in the game, but the state of cricket in India today began in 1983, when India won its first ODI World Cup on English soil. India under the captaincy of Kapil Dev produced this amazing performance, even when India was not considered as a contender.
From here the speed of cricket became faster day by day. Of course, it took 28 years for India to win its next ODI World Cup, but in the meantime India had become a big name in cricket. In 2003, India made it to the finals of the World Cup, but did not win. The first World Cup in T20 format was played in 2007, which was won by India under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India again won the ODI World Cup in 2011 under Dhoni’s captaincy. Since then, India has played in the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup every time.
A big name in wrestling
When the Helsinki Olympics were held in 1952 after independence, India was not considered a contender in any sport other than hockey, but one player shocked everyone. This player was Kashaba Jagav. Jadhav won bronze medal for India in these games. After Jadhav’s restart, India achieved many more successes in the game. In 1961, Uday Chand won a bronze medal at the World Championships and became the first wrestler to win a medal for India at the tournament. In 1967, Bishmabar Singh won the silver medal in 57 kg.
After this, India also performed brilliantly in the Commonwealth Games in 1970 and won five gold, three silver and one bronze medals. Indian wrestlers have been consistently winning medals at the Asian Games since 1954. India was achieving consistent success in the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, but was disappointing in the Olympics. Sushil Kumar removed this disappointment. Sushil won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. After this there has been no Olympics where India has not won a medal in wrestling in the Olympics. The situation today is that Indian athletes enter any wrestling tournament, they are medal contenders and return with medals.
Pride grew in boxing
Boxing has also been a sport where India is currently considered strong. But after independence it took a long time to reach this position. India won its first Olympic medal in 2008 in Beijing. Vijender Singh bagged the bronze medal for India. Women’s boxing entered the Olympic Games in 2012 and Mary Kom won a stunning bronze medal here. Although Indian boxers failed to win a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Lovlina Borgohen won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics-2020.
On the other hand, if we talk about the World Championship, Mary Kom has given India a lot of success in this. The women’s version of this championship started in 2006 and Mary Kom won the silver medal in this championship. She was also the first Indian from India to win a medal in this tournament. Nikhat Zareen recently won a medal in this championship. Whenever these championships are held, Indian boxers are medal contenders. The same is true of the Commonwealth and Asian Games. Here too, India has hoisted its flag for the past few years.
History was made in badminton
Badminton is also a sport in which India has shown its strength in a big way. PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal have continued what Prakash Padukone and Pulo Gopichand started with success at the All England Championship. The news today is that we have a total of three Olympic medals in this sport. Saina won bronze at London Olympics-2016, while Sindhu won silver at Rio Olympics-2016 and bronze at Tokyo Olympics-2022. India also won the Thomas Cup this time making history by winning medals and Sindhu, Lakshya Sen did wonders in the World Championship. Even in this sport today India stands as a world superpower. Wherever the Indian athletes land, there are medal contenders.
Target in shooting
Rajvardhan Rathore’s silver medal at the 2004 Olympics brought India recognition at the global level which grew day by day. Apart from the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, India has showcased many sports in the world in the last few years. Along with this, India also managed to win a medal in the Olympics. In the same Games in 2008, India ended the gold drought in the singles category. Abhinav Bindra won gold in shooting for India. After this, Gagan Narang and Vijay Kumar also made India successful in the London Olympics. Today the words of Indian shooters speak everywhere.
India is also emerging as a super power in athletics
No one thought that India would do wonders in athletics, but Neeraj Chopra did it by winning the gold medal for India in the Tokyo Olympics. Neeraj also recently won a silver medal for India at the World Championships. In this game too, India has achieved good success in the last few years.
Lost credibility will be found in hockey
Hockey was the first sport, in which India was considered certain to win a medal in the Olympics, but then gradually the luster of the sport faded and India could not do wonders here. After 1980, India did not win an Olympic medal nor did it get the same status as before. The Indian men’s hockey team won the bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics and brought glory to India, while the women’s team played the bronze medal match. In this game too, India seems to be returning to its old ways.
