The central government has convened an all-party meeting this evening following an appeal by parties in Tamil Nadu, the Indian state closest to Sri Lanka, to intervene in the Sri Lankan crisis. Tamil Nadu parties DMK and AIADMK demanded that neighboring India, which is facing its worst economic crisis in seven decades, should intervene. However, the Government of India has sent aid several times through various channels. India has assured Sri Lanka that it will provide adequate assistance to restore democracy, stability and economic reforms in the country.
It is to be noted that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country last week amid the economic crisis in Sri Lanka following massive protests. After that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was made the working President of the country. Amid the crisis in Sri Lanka, the country’s parliament will elect a new president on Wednesday. Sri Lanka has acute shortages of food, fuel and medicine. Inflation has skyrocketed and many families are facing starvation.
