New Delhi: On Monday, elected Members of Parliament and MLAs from across the country voted in the 15th presidential election of the country. The counting of votes will be done on July 21 and the new president will take the oath of office and secrecy on July 25. The victory of NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu (former governor of Jharkhand) is considered certain due to the dominance of BJP and the support of regional parties like Biju Janata Dal, Bahujan Samaj Paksha, Shiromani Akali Dal, Shiv Sena and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. He is likely to get more than two-thirds of the votes. She will have the distinction of being the first tribal leader and the second woman to hold the presidency of the country.
In the presidential election, the number of voters is 4809 with 776 parliamentarians and 4033 MLAs. However, five seats in Parliament and six seats in Assemblies are vacant. As two MLAs were disqualified for membership of the Legislative Assembly, there were 4796 eligible voters. Presidential elections are conducted by secret ballot. A party cannot issue a ticket for its MP or MLA in the presidential election.
Odisha-based Congress MLA Mohammad Mokim created controversy by announcing that he had voted in favor of Murmoo because she was a daughter of Odisha.
NCP MLA Kamlesh Singh in Jharkhand said that I voted in favor of NDA candidate Draupadi Murmoo.
NCP leader in Gujarat Kandhal Jadeja also said that he voted in favor of Mumur.
