Heavy rains in Gir Somnath district have created havoc. It has been raining since early morning today, disrupting public life. This morning, six talukas of the district received 1 to 3.5 inches of rain in four hours. When the river Saraswati flooded, the temple of the famous pilgrimage site Madhavrayaji was submerged in water.
Today, the highest rainfall of 3.5 inches was recorded in Sutrapada and the lowest rainfall of only 3 mm was recorded in Talala. Una and Gir-Gadha districts received 2.5 inches of rain in four hours. Two days of torrential rains have flooded rivers and canals, causing flood-like conditions in the entire area.
The floods in Sutrapada and Kodinar districts are expected to cause huge losses to farmers. The water tank in Dhamlej village of Sutrapada had collapsed.
Every year during the monsoon, when the river Saraswati floods during the heavy rains, the temple of Madhavrayaji becomes submerged. The temple has been submerged in the first round of rains this year.
Roads have been submerged in water, affecting traffic. The condition of Somnath-Una National Highway has deteriorated following the rains. There are huge potholes on the road. An Indian Oil tanker sank in the ground near Dhamrej village, affecting vehicular traffic. Locals have started repairing bad roads in their own way.
