  • Celebrating Diwasa in Chotaudepur district in an interesting way

In Chotaudepur district, which has a tribal majority, the tiger god is worshiped on the day of Diwasa festival. In which a man becomes a tiger, a man becomes a cat. Those who are given milk, both are chased away by ladles of mud. In the tribal community, the festival of Diwasa is considered to be the festival of worshiping the deities present in the village boundaries. It is worth mentioning here that most of the tribal gods and goddesses have been installed in the forest and mountains for years.

A special form of ‘tiger cat’ worship is offered to the deity during the Divasa festival. The ancestors of tribal society have been celebrating Diwasa since centuries. They worship ‘Nodarva’, the god of grass growing on the land, and pray that good grass will grow on the land, so that the cattle can grow and graze well, then they also get permission from the Nodar god to pull up the grass that has grown in the fields, and Divasa Later the grass grown in the fields is condemned.

According to a tradition, the villagers used to sacrifice goats by naming the tiger god. Then the tigress used to come among thousands of people and carry the goats. And it was considered auspicious for a tiger to come to the shrine on the day of the god and take away the sacrificed goat. Such was the belief in tribal understanding.

According to the belief, even today this unique tradition is seen in the rural areas of the district. But with the change of time, gradually as the tiger god stopped coming to take the goat on the day, now the tiger doesn’t actually come, so the villagers act as tiger cats. According to Tinabhai Bhil, a social worker of Jamli village, a tiger cat ritual is performed on Diwasa.
