DRI has carried out a major operation under Operation ‘Gold Rush’. DRI has seized gold biscuits worth around Rs 33.40 crore. The DRI conducted the raids after receiving information about a scheme to smuggle a large consignment of smuggled gold into India via Mizoram. About 65.46 kg of gold was being transported from north-eastern countries to Mumbai, Patna and Delhi, when the action was taken. This is claimed to be the biggest action ever.
A scheme to hide gold in household goods
Domestic couriers and logistics companies were used for smuggling. The gold biscuits were hidden in different types of households. First, the DRI seized 120 gold biscuits weighing around 19.93 kg and worth approximately Rs 10.18 crore under Operation Gold Rush in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra.
Logistics company warehouse raided in Patna
Investigation revealed that two consignments of this consignment from abroad to Mizoram and from Mizoram to Mumbai were also dispatched by couriers to Delhi and Patna. Subsequently, the warehouse of the same logistics company in Patna was raided and 172 gold biscuits weighing 28.57 kg and worth about Rs 14.50 crore were seized.
102 gold biscuits seized in raids in Delhi
The third consignment of this consignment was seized from Delhi. From here 102 gold biscuits weighing 16.96 kg and estimated cost is Rs 8.69 crore. A total of 394 gold biscuits were thus seized, weighing 65.46 kg and estimated to have a total value of Rs 33.40 crore.
