Asad Rauf, one of Pakistan’s best umpires, died in Lahore on Wednesday. Asad Rauf, a member of the elite panel of the International Cricket Council (ICC), was 66 years old. Asad Rauf has died of a heart attack. Asad Rauf has umpired in 49 Tests, 98 ODIs and 23 T20 International matches in his 13-year career. He was accused of spot fixing in the 2013 IPL season. Then in 2016 BCCI banned Asad Rauf for five years.
Asad was returning home after closing the shop
Asad Rauf’s life changed a lot after the ban. He used to run a shoe-clothing shop in the market of Lahore. Asad’s death was informed by his brother Tahir Rauf. Tahir said Asad was returning home after closing the shop on Wednesday, when he felt chest pain. After which he died.
PCB president Ramiz Raja tweeted
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) President Ramiz Raja tweeted his condolences on the death of Asad Rauf. Ramiz Raja wrote – ‘Very saddened to hear the news of Asad Rauf’s death. Not only was he a good umpire, but he also had a great sense of humor. He always put a smile on my face and would do so whenever I remembered him. My condolences to his family.’
Included in Elite Panel of ICC
Rauf played 71 first-class matches for the National Bank of Pakistan and Railways and later became an umpire. He was included in the Elite Panel of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in April 2006.
The model made serious allegations
Rauf also made headlines in 2012 for sexual harassment allegations leveled by a Mumbai-based model. The model claimed that she had an affair with the Pakistani umpire because he had promised to marry her. But later Rauf broke the promise.
A case of spot fixing was reported in IPL
Asad Rauf’s career took off in 2013. Pakistani players were banned from playing in the IPL, but Asad continued to umpire. In 2013, Asad was accused of spot fixing in IPL. After this, Asad had to leave the IPL midway. Also, in the same year he was removed from the Champions Trophy and was also removed from the ICC’s international umpiring panel.
A five-year ban was imposed by the BCCI
Due to all these things, Asad retired from umpiring. Then in 2016 BCCI banned Asad Rauf for five years. The disciplinary committee then found him guilty of being involved in corruption. Rauf accepted expensive gifts from bookies and was also involved in a match-fixing scam during the 2013 IPL.
