CCTV: ED's Plea for CCTV at Wadhawan Home Granted by Court | Mumbai News

Mumbai: After former HDIL promoter Rakesh Kumar Wadhawan was granted interim bail on medical grounds by the Supreme Court, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) moved the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court to seek installation of CCTV cameras at his Union Park home entry and exit points and for deployment of sufficient escort guards to keep a watch on his movements.
In a plea submitted by special public prosecutor Kavita Patil, the ED said he may tamper with evidence and influence witnesses and dispose of unidentified assets.
Allowing the plea, special judge M G Deshpande said Rakesh Wadhawan is also one of the main accused in a case where proceeds of crime are huge and still under investigation.
“Though subsequent prosecution complaints have been filed, further PMLA investigation is still going… Therefore, care has to be taken that in any case, accused Rakesh Wadhawan should not misuse the liberty granted by the… Supreme Court and to that extent contention raised by the ED is justified. If the same is allowed no prejudice will be caused to accused Rakesh Kumar Wadhawan…,” the judge said.
The judge further said the police escort, which was already deputed, should maintain a report of daily movements and meetings of the accused with a specific time schedule and it should be shared with the ED on a weekly basis. “The ED is at liberty to depute their staff to note the situation and keep 24×7 vigilance on the activities of accused Rakesh Wadhawan by remaining present in the house without disturbing the privacy…,” the judge said.
On November 9, the Supreme Court granted Wadhawan interim bail. The following day, imposing conditions, the special PMLA judge said the accused is to undertake to not indulge in activities which are detrimental to the interest of the prosecution’s case.
“Accused… Rakesh Kumar Wadhawan shall undertake not to use any gadgets like smart mobile phone, laptop, computers etc and also not to deal with any documents or the activities relating to crime proceeds which are detrimental to the interest of the case of prosecution,” the judge said.
