November: The companion of Topaz
November birthstones are the traditional birth stone Topaz and the modern birthstone Citrine, which is a variety of quartz. Citrine, with its pale yellow to brownish orange color, was often confused with topaz in the past. Egyptians and Greeks believed in the powers of citrine, using it as a talisman and carving iconic images into the gem. Citrine is now recognized as a distinct mineral species from topaz. Its attractive color, durability, and affordability make it a popular choice for jewelry. Brazil is one of the largest suppliers of citrine, but it is also found in other countries such as France, Russia, Madagascar, Spain, and the USA. Citrine is best selected as skillfully carved, crystal-clear gems in shades of yellow, orange, and red. It is interesting to know that the name citrine was derived from the citron fruit. Citrine geodes created by Mother Earth are unique showpieces that can be as tall as six feet or more.
