Ahmedabad: The 44th Saptak Annual Music Festival 2024 is set to pay homage to two music legends, Pt Kumar Gandharva and Ustad Amir Khanannounced organizers on Saturday. Scheduled from January 1 to 13, the festival will unfold at the LD Arts College campus.
Manju Mehta, the sitarist and co-founder of the festival, said this year marks the centenary celebration of Pt Kumar Gandharva.She added, “He shared a bond with the city and his legacy will be celebrated during the festival, which will see the participation of his grandson Pt Bhuvnesh Komkali and his senior disciple Satyasheel Deshpande.” She added that this year marks the 50th death anniversary of Ustad Amir Khan Saheb, a founder of Indore Gharana. “In his memory, one of his senior disciples Pt Suresh Gandharva and Mahendra Toke, an Indore Gharana artist based in Ahmedabad, will perform at the festival. Ustadji’s son Shahbaz Khan will also attend the festival,” said Mehta.
The organizers plan to showcase clippings of the maestros’ memorable performances, including those at Saptak, before the start of each evening session.
Prafull Anubhai, trustee of Saptak, shared that this year’s festival will encompass more than 39 sessions, featuring over 125 artists, including Saptak students. He added, “This year will put the spotlight on a higher number of local talents compared to previous editions.”
The festival’s diverse lineup includes a Kathak performance by Pt Rajendra Gangani, a representative of the Jaipur Gharana style. Additionally, there will be a tabla solo by the father-son duo Pt Anindo Chatterjee and Anubrata Chatterjee, as well as a classical fusion performance by Pt Ronu Majumdar on flute and Ustad Taufiq Qureshi on the djembe.

Renowned music institute Bhaatkhande Sangit Vidyalaya will celebrate its 84th anniversary with the Bhaatkhande Music Festival 2023 at the India Islamic Cultural Centre Lodhi Estate, New Delhi on 9th December 2023. The festival will feature performances of Hindustani Classical Music, vocal and Kathak, tabla and flute recitals. A special orchestra piece on Raaga Ahir Bhairav will be performed, as well as a Hori performance and a kathak recital on Tarana by Neeti Mohan. The Desi Oon Festival, held at Triveni Kala Sangam in New Delhi from December 7 to 11, is a celebration of India’s wool heritage.
