Smog shrouds parts of Mumbai as minimum temperature drops below 20 degree C

Various parts of Mumbai were covered in smog on Friday, causing a notable reduction in visibility. This occurred following the city’s recording of its initial sub-20 degree temperature of the season. IMD scientist Sunil Kamble explained that the smog was caused by calm easterly winds in the morning. Later in the day, the Air Quality Index (AQI) for the city was recorded at 116, categorizing it as moderate.
The forecast for Saturday is that AQI will persist in the moderate category. On Thursday, the minimum temperature reached 19.7 degrees, increasing to 21.3 degrees on Friday. Experts noted that this uptick in minimum temperatures was anticipated as the influence of the western disturbance diminished. On Friday, the Santacruz observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 21.3 degrees, surpassing the normal by 1.2 degrees. In comparison, Colaba reported a normal temperature of 22.5 degrees.

Relative humidity levels were 85% at Colaba and 90% at Santacruz. Daytime temperatures recorded by Colaba and Santacruz were 30.2 degrees and 31.5 degrees. The IMD’s forecast for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar till December 5 suggests the prevalence of dry weather conditions. Unlike last year, this November experienced unseasonal rains, with the Colaba and Santacruz observatories recording 39.5mm and 8.2mm of rainfall.
