New Delhi. A large number of sales of car companies come from exports. There are many car companies in India which export millions of cars every year. Talking about the last financial year 2023-24, the export of passenger cars was 6,71,756 units. But only two companies have the largest share in the export of passenger vehicles (cars) and these companies are also selling the most cars in India. At the same time, the share of Indian companies is very minor in comparison to them.
We are talking about Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, the two largest manufacturers of passenger cars in India. If we look at the statistics, then for a long time, car companies of Japan and Korea have been ahead in terms of exports. Apart from selling cars in India, they also dominate the export market. At the same time, these companies have also gained a good hold in the markets outside India by exporting cars in all types of body styles (hatchback, sedan, SUV).
Japanese companies dominate car exports
The share of foreign companies in car exports from India is 98%, while the share of Japanese and Korean companies alone is up to 88%. Among these, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai export the most cars. Talking about exports, Maruti Suzuki’s share in the total cars exported from India is 42%, Hyundai’s 24%, Kia’s 8%, Honda’s 6% and Nissan’s 6%. German company Volkswagen is also contributing 6%. At the same time, Indian companies are far behind in terms of exports. Big Indian car manufacturers like Tata and Mahindra have a mere 1.6% and 0.4% share in exports.
Maruti Baleno shines in exports
The most exported car from India in the financial year 2023-24 was Maruti Suzuki Baleno, of which 57,738 units were exported. After Baleno, Hyundai Verna was at second place. Among the most exported cars were Maruti Dzire, Nissan Sunny, Volkswagen Virtus, Hyundai Aura, Hyundai Grand i10, Maruti Swift, Maruti X-Preso, Maruti Celerio and Hyundai i20.
Among the cars exported, sedans were 35% and hatchbacks were 30%, while 98% of these cars were petrol-powered. Among the cars exported, both Nissan Sunny and Mahindra KUV 100 were cars that were being made only for export. These are not being sold in the domestic market.
