Expert: Dr. Urvi Maheshwari, Physician, Janova Shelby Hospital, Mumbai

Question- What is a hangover and why does it happen? answer- Hangover is an after effect in the body after drinking alcohol. Hangover occurs because after drinking alcohol, a chemical called acetaldehyde is released in the body. When our liver processes alcohol to remove it from the body, in that process this chemical is released in the body, which causes a hangover. Apart from this, there can be these 3 more reasons –

  • Drinking alcohol on an empty stomach or not eating anything after drinking alcohol can cause a hangover.
  • Alcohol is a diuretic. It means something that dehydrates the body. Hangover can occur due to dehydration.
  • Drinking alcohol that has a higher concentration of congeners is more likely to cause a hangover, such as whiskey, rum or red wine. A congener is a chemical compound produced in the process of fermentation of wine.

Question- What are the symptoms of hangover? answer- Hangover symptoms can range from a severe headache to nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. It depends on the liver’s ability to digest alcohol. Its symptoms can be felt both physically and mentally. Hangover symptoms usually last for 24 hours.

Hangover symptoms begin when the alcohol level in the blood becomes very high or falls to zero. These symptoms usually appear the next morning after drinking too much alcohol at night.

Question- The biggest cause of hangover and the biggest side effect of alcohol is dehydration. What to do to deal with this? answer- Dehydration occurs when the amount of water in the body decreases. This problem increases after drinking excessive alcohol. Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol does not release the vasopressin hormone in the body. It is also called anti-diuretic hormone (ADH). ADH itself gives the signal to the kidneys to stop urine. To avoid this, drink plenty of water before and after alcohol. If you have drunk alcohol at night, eat electrolyte-rich fruits like banana, coconut water, watermelon, orange as soon as you wake up in the morning. This will keep the body hydrated.

Question- What are the home tips to deal with hangover? answer- Everyone wants to start the first day of the year by being energetic and active. Therefore, if you are having a hangover due to drinking too much alcohol late at night, then you can adopt some home remedies to deal with it. See them in the graphic below-

Question: What precautions should be taken while drinking alcohol to reduce the chances of a hangover? answer- Physician Dr. Urvi Maheshwari tells that if you want to avoid hangover, then take some important precautions before the New Year party. Such as-

  • Eat healthy food during the day. Keep less carbs and more protein in your diet. Like eat less roti, rice and more pulses, coarse grains, eggs, chicken etc.
  • Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water throughout the day.
  • Go after eating something healthy. Do not drink alcohol on an empty stomach.
  • Drink two glasses of water before starting the drink.
  • Keep mixing non-alcoholic drinks with alcohol at the party.
  • Keep drinking water after every drink and in between. This will not cause dehydration. Also, toxic substances will keep coming out of the body through urine.

Apart from this, there are some other precautions also. See them in the graphic below-

Question- Can any medicine be taken to remove hangover?

answer- Dr. Urvi Maheshwari says that headache, dizziness, vomiting or fatigue are common in hangover. Don’t worry too much about this. Take as much rest as possible. This will reduce the symptoms of hangover within a few hours.

According to the doctor, one should avoid taking medicines in case of hangover because these medicines are also digested in our liver. The liver is already tired from working hard to digest alcohol. In such a situation, any medicine taken to cure hangover harms the liver. Therefore do not take medicine and rest.
