India and Pakistan agree to ceasefire

Following three days of military escalation between India and Pakistan, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Saturday, May 10, stated that both sides have agreed to a ceasefire.

Addressing the media, Vikram at 6 pm stated that the decision was arrived at after Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) called on his Indian counterpart at 3.35 pm. “It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 17:00 hours Indian Standard Time,” Misri said.

“Instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding. The Director Generals of Military Operations will talk again on the 12th of May at 1200 hours,” he added.

The Foreign Secretary took no questions.

Tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours have been escalating over the past few days, after India’s defence forces launched ‘Operation Sindoor’, a military offensive in response to the Pahalgam attacks, which killed 26 Indians on April 22.
