A new twist has arrived in the climate tech in the tech world. Microsoft has recently signed a unique deal, which is about $ 1.7 billion. Under this deal, there is a plan to reduce carbon emissions in the environment by pressing human stool and other biological waste below the surface of the earth in association with the American startup Vaulted Deep. This is not a common technique, but a step that will avoid emission of carbon dioxide whenever someone flushes in their washroom every time.
Indeed, when the organic material of human and food waste rotes into the open air, it produces methane gas, which is four times more harmful than carbon dioxide. “We are solving this surface problem forever under the ground,” said Julia Reichelstein, CEO of Vaulted Deep.
This investment of Microsoft is considered one of the biggest plans ever in biological carbon assessment (capturing carbon in nature). The company wants to reduce its rapidly growing AI and the 23 to 30% increased carbon footprint emanating from the data center activity.
In the year 2023, Microsoft released a total carbon equal to a total of 75.5 million tonnes of CO2, with a large stake scope 3 images. These are emissions that come out of energy not directly, but from supply chain, construction material and server manufacturing.
Travel from dirt to cleanliness
Traditional methods such as spreading biological waste in fields are dangerous to the environment, as it causes water pollution and also reach the environment like PFAS. This deep injection technique of vaulted deep ends these pollution along with greenhouse gases as well as these pollution.
Big Promise: Carbon Negative by 2030
Microsoft has placed a big bet in the Climate Challenge Jung. The company has pledged to make itself carbon negative by 2030 and has also planned to remove all carbon emissions from its establishment till 2050. So far, the company has purchased more than 83 million tonnes of carbon credits, with a part of 59 million tonnes last year alone.
This poop-to-carbon storage deal with vaulted deep is the most important and unique part of this aspiring target of Microsoft. While on the one hand this scheme is decreasing carbon by burying human dirt in depth, on the other hand it is setting a new trend in climate tech for the whole world.
Therefore, it is not just a climate project, but a new hope for humanity. Think, with the next flush you will feel that you are also contributing to save the earth.
