A deadly explosion hit a cricket match at Kausar Cricket Ground in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, killing one person and injuring several others. Police confirmed it was a targeted attack using an improvised explosive device in Bajaur district’s Khar tehsil, with militant groups suspected amid ongoing security operations.Bajaur District Police Officer Waqas Rafique stated: “It appears to be a targeted attack.”While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, police officials attributed it to terrorists, citing the recently launched Operation Sarbakaf by security forces last month. The incident follows two separate violent encounters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province the previous Saturday.Three militants were killed during a police encounter in Kohat district’s Lachi police station jurisdiction.

“It’s pretty simple”: Bill Belichick’s blunt verdict on UNC ban sends shockwaves through college-NFL scouting world
Bill Belichick’s blunt words turn a local ban into a national talking point (Image credits: IG/X)

Bill Belichick turned a simmering dispute into national headlines after delivering a striking response to the University of North Carolina’s decision to bar Patriots scouts from its football program. The legendary coach, never known for sugarcoating, made it clear that if he was not welcome at UNC, then Tar Heel representatives would not be welcome around his facilities either — a rare public rebuke that quickly stirred debate across the football world.

How the UNC ban sparked fiery football clash

Reports revealed that UNC restricted New England Patriots staff from accessing their practices and workouts, limiting scouting opportunities. The decision raised eyebrows in league circles, especially with Belichick now leading the program. Addressing the situation, he made his stance crystal clear: “It’s clear I’m not welcome there at their facility. So they’re not welcome at ours. It’s pretty simple.”

Why Belichick’s words carried more than football weight

Belichick’s comments were not just about access, but about respect. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for discipline and precision, rarely indulging in emotional outbursts. Yet this response carried a sharper edge, signaling that he viewed the move as more than a logistical issue. To him, the relationship between college programs and NFL teams should be based on fairness, not exclusion.

The blunt quote that defined the entire moment

What resonates most is how one blunt line captured the tension of the entire saga. Fans and analysts alike interpreted his words as a rare glimpse of Belichick standing his ground beyond X’s and O’s, defending both his program and his personal dignity. For a coach long seen as stoic and impenetrable, this flash of candor became the defining takeaway.

Why this rift could reshape college-NFL scouting ties

The standoff may seem isolated, but its impact could stretch further. NFL scouts depend on access to evaluate talent, and college restrictions complicate that pipeline. Belichick’s response, sharp and unapologetic, underscores how fragile these relationships can be. In the end, his quote turned a local ban into a national talking point — proof that sometimes a single sentence can carry more weight than a season’s worth of plays. Also read: Who is Madison Beer? Trump tariffs on India’s software exports? Why IT sector is worried - double taxation, visa tightening may deal a blow

Trump tariffs on India’s software exports? Why IT sector is worried - double taxation, visa tightening may deal a blow
The Indian technology services outsourcing sector, valued at $283 billion, derives over 60% of its earnings from US. (AI image)

India’s IT sector is worried about the possible imposition of tariffs on software exports to the US by the Donald Trump administration. The IT sector is already experiencing challenges due to worldwide economic uncertainties and the increasing adoption of AI-based automation, according to industry specialists. The US government’s potential consideration of extending tariffs to software exports has created significant concern within India’s information technology industry, as this could severely impact their operations in their main market.

Trump tariff fears: Why is Indian IT sector worried?

The implementation of tariffs on services exports by the US administration could result in dual taxation, as Indian software companies already contribute substantial tax payments in the United States, according to an ET report.Additional restrictions on visa regulations might lead to increased operational costs due to necessary local recruitment in the US or neighbouring regions.

Tech in trouble?

Tech in trouble?

The Indian technology services outsourcing sector, valued at $283 billion and including companies such as Tata Consultancy Services, InfosysHCLTech and Wipro, derives over 60% of its earnings from the United States, whilst maintaining its primary workforce in India. However, the US administration has not yet formally announced or indicated any such intentions. Concerns arose after Peter Navarro, the US President’s senior advisor for trade, shared a social media post on X suggesting the application of tariffs on all outsourcing and foreign remote workers.A US conservative commentator Jack Posobiec posted: “Countries must pay for the privilege of providing services remotely to the US the same way as goods. Apply across industries, levelled as necessary per country.”Such implementation would affect all technology service recipients who utilise services from India and similar nations.

Will Trump impose tariffs on IT?

Phil Fersht, CEO and chief analyst at HFS group, suggests that discussions about tariffs on India’s outsourcing sector represent more political messaging than actual policy intentions. Nevertheless, any outsourcing penalties would generate immediate uncertainty, increase operational costs and affect profit margins during an already challenging demand period, the ET report said.“Imposing duties on digital labour flows is far more complex than taxing goods crossing borders. The US depends heavily on India’s IT and engineering talent, whether onsite through H-1B visas or offshore through remote delivery, to keep its own technology economy competitive,” Fersht said.“In addition, several tech billionaire leaders exert significant influence over the Trump administration, and many of them are strongly pro-India because their global businesses depend heavily on Indian engineering talent, delivery capability and market access.”Yugal Joshi, partner at US-based technology consultancy and analyst firm Everest Group, was quoted as saying: “These companies pay significant taxes in the US and therefore, the tariff will be double taxation… It will further harm growth of India-based service providers and even GCCs, if they are tariffed too.”

Chhattisgarh: 8-yr-old girl forced to do 100 squats in class, left unable to walk; school faces probe

RAIPUR: In a case of corporal punishment from Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district, an eight-year-old girl has been left unable to walk after her teacher allegedly forced her to perform 100 sit-ups and beat her with a stick for stepping out of the class to use the toilet. The incident that took place on Wednesday came to light on Friday. The class 2 girl student at a govt-funded school in Pratapgarh is now undergoing treatment at a private hospital where doctors confirmed muscle damage in her legs. The district education officer has ordered an inquiry into the incident.Surguja DEO Dinesh Jha told TOI that he got the information about the matter and has ordered an inquiry into it. “The block education officer along with a team has been asked to visit the school, record statement of teachers, students and principal. Prima facie, it’s clear that something unpleasant has definitely happened with the girl, but the teacher in question doesn’t take any class for the girl, is what I have gathered. We are looking into CCTV footage as well and will get the accused punished after the probe, the DEO said. However, as the matter escalated, Regional officer, DAV Institutions, Chhattisgarh zone has ordered a compulsory leave for indefinite period to the mother teacher Namrata Gupta and principal Rajiv Singh, in charge DAV Mukhyamantri Public School, Pratapgarh, Sitapur. The girl told reporters that she was on her way to the toilet when she was stopped by a woman teacher. When she explained that she was going to the toilet, the teacher struck her twice with a stick and then ordered her back to class, where she was punished with 100 sit-ups. Soon afterwards, the girl complained of severe pain below her knees and collapsed. The doctors treating her said her leg muscles have developed cracks due to the strain, leaving her unable to stand or walk. “The pain is so severe that she cannot lift her legs,” said her uncle, who is caring for her while her father works in Ambikapur. The minor girl’s family alleged the school management dismissed their complaints, saying “there was no fault on our part”. ‘We will approach police if school continues to be in denial mode.”“Days have passed since the incident. My daughter is still crying in pain. This is not discipline—it is brutality in the name of teaching,” her mother said.Block education officer Indu Tirkey said that a departmental team will probe the matter within two days. “If the teacher is found guilty, strict action will follow,” she said.

'I don't understand the algorithm': UP cop’s Insta post reunites mother, son after 10 years; his 5th such case

MEERUT: A social media video posted by a head constable in UP helped reunite a 77-year-old mother in Deoria with her son who had been missing for more than a decade. Ashwani Malik, 35, is posted in Amroha and has 45 lakh followers on Instagram. On Sept 3, a man scrolling through the social media platform in Mumbai paused at a short video of a gaunt, silent figure seated on a charpoy. Something in the man’s expression — blank yet faintly familiar — stopped him. A minute later, he was on the phone with his family in Deoria, UP. The man in the video, he believed, was his missing uncle, gone without a trace for over a decade. That same evening, a video call confirmed what his grandmother, 77-year-old Rasuma Bano, had long given up hope of ever seeing again: her son was alive. The video had been recorded and posted days earlier by head constable Malik, not just a beat cop but also an “influencer” in his own right with a growing reputation for using his reach to solve missing person cases. This was the fifth such case where one of Malik’s posts had helped bring someone home.Malik had noticed the man on Aug 23, sitting alone by the roadside as he returned from duty. The man appeared disoriented, unkempt, and emotionally withdrawn. “He wasn’t saying anything,” Malik recalled. “But he didn’t resist when we offered tea.” He and his colleagues, Mohd Salman and Kashif, brought the man—later identified as Mohd Salim—to their quarters in Moradabad. They gave him a bath, clean clothes, a meal, and time. Gradually, Salim began to speak, though his words remained sparse. Malik recorded a short video and uploaded it to Instagram, where he regularly shares clips of field encounters, public outreach, and missing persons. What the video didn’t show was that Salim had once had a life in Haraiya village under Mahuadih police station in Deoria. He had a wife, who died twelve years ago, and a family he couldn’t face after her loss. Overwhelmed by grief, Salim left home and never returned. For ten years, his mother, Rasuma Bano, lived with the uncertainty of not knowing whether her son was dead or alive. Her husband passed away during that period. Salim’s return brought home not just a lost son, but a fragile sense of closure.Amroha SP Amit Kumar Anand confirmed Salim’s identity and said the reunion took place formally on Sept 4 after the family travelled to Moradabad. “He had been missing for over a decade. Once verified, we handed him over to his relatives,” Anand said.“My grandmother never thought this day would come,” said Mohd Gufran, Salim’s nephew, who received the alert from his contact in Mumbai. “She broke down on the video call. After his wife died, my uncle had withdrawn from everyone. His return has given her a reason to live again.”For Malik, the case is personal — not just because he helped make it happen, but because it speaks to the kind of policeman he has worked hard to become. Raised in Muzaffarnagar, he joined the force in 2012 with a mission to change what he saw as a broken relationship between the police and the public. “In my town, the presence of khaki made people uncomfortable. I knew we had to change that—not through power, but through presence. His journey into social media began in 2020, somewhat accidentally. A seasoned bodybuilder, Malik started sharing workout videos, which drew in a young audience. Over time, he used that traction to talk about his work, his encounters, and most significantly, the human stories behind the badge. What sets his account apart is the absence of drama. His videos are quiet, observational, often filmed in a single take. “I don’t understand the algorithm, to be honest,” he said. “I just try to help where I can. When someone sees a face they recognise and a family comes back together — that’s more than enough.”

NEW DELHI: An 11-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly has given birth to a premature baby that died soon after delivery, police said on Saturday.According to news agency PTI, the child, born seven months into the pregnancy at the District Women’s Hospital in Bareilly, survived for about 30 minutes. Doctors said the girl had suffered heavy blood loss during delivery due to her age, but her condition is now stable. Police have arrested a 31-year-old man, Rashid, who is accused of repeatedly raping and blackmailing the girl over several months. Officers said he is married with two children. Sharjeel Imam moves Supreme Court against HC’s bail denial

NEW DELHI: Activist Sharjeel Imam on Saturday moved the Supreme Court challenging a Delhi High Court order denying him bail in an anti-terror law case linked to the alleged conspiracy behind the February 2020 riots in the national capital.Denying bail to nine persons in the “larger conspiracy” case of the riots, the high court had ruled that “conspiratorial” violence under the garb of demonstrations or protests by citizens cannot be allowed.A bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur dismissed the bail pleas of Imam, Umar Khalid, Mohd Saleem Khan, Shifa Ur Rehman, Athar Khan, Meeran Haider, Abdul Khalid Saifi and Gulfisha Fatima holding that the Constitution affords citizens the right to protest and carry out demonstrations or agitations, provided they are orderly, peaceful and without arms and such actions must be within the bounds of law.The order of Justice Chawla’s bench had said the right to participate in peaceful protests and to make speeches in public meetings was protected under Article 19(1)(a), and couldn’t be blatantly curtailed. However, the right was stated to be “not absolute” and “subject to reasonable restrictions”.“If the exercise of an unfettered right to protest were permitted, it would damage the constitutional framework and impinge upon the law-and-order situation in the country,” the order had said. The bench went on to say, “Any conspiratorial violence under the garb of protests or demonstrations by the citizens cannot be permitted. Such actions must be regulated and checked by the state machinery, as they do not fall within the ambit of freedom of speech, expression and association.”Dealing with the ground of delay in trial besides the time already spent behind bars to grant bail to the accused, the bench ruled such a ground was not a “universally applicable” in all cases.“The discretion to grant or deny bail vests with the constitutional court, depending upon the peculiar facts and circumstances of each of the case,” it added. The bench had further noted factors such as the interest and safety of the society at large, aside from the victims and their families, ought to be considered by courts at the time of adjudicating bail applications. On the alleged roles ascribed to Imam and Khalid by the prosecution, the court had ruled the same couldn’t be “lightly brushed aside”.The court had also rejected the plea for parity with co-accused persons, namely, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Devangana Kalita, and Natasha Narwal who were granted bail by a coordinate bench of the high court.

A chilling surveillance video has revealed the final moments of a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee’s life after she was fatally stabbed in what police described as a random attack aboard a Charlotte light rail train. The victim, Iryna Zarutska, who fled war-torn Ukraine in search of safety in the United States, was attacked on the Lynx Blue Line just before 10 pm on August 22, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD).

Surveillance video captures attack

The video, released Friday by the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), shows Zarutska boarding the train in her pizzeria uniform at 9:46 pm and sitting quietly, scrolling on her phone. Just four minutes later, police say, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr, a homeless ex-convict, pulled out a folding knife and lunged at her, stabbing her three times — including once in the neck.As Zarutska clutched her throat and collapsed in her seat, Brown walked through the car, stripped off his sweatshirt, and waited near the doors as other passengers began to notice blood dripping from him, the footage shows.Police said Brown exited at the next stop, where a knife was later recovered. Zarutska was pronounced dead on the train.

Suspect’s criminal history

Brown, who has multiple arrests dating back to 2011, was charged with first-degree murder. His criminal record includes larceny, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and communicating threats. He previously served five years in prison for armed robbery, according to WSOC-TV.In January, police arrested Brown after he allegedly misused 911 during a welfare check. At the time, he claimed a “man-made” material inside his body was controlling his movements, according to an affidavit cited by the Charlotte Observer. He was treated for a hand injury sustained during the stabbing before being booked into custody.

Questions over transit safety

According to Spectrum News, it took six minutes for police to respond to the incident. Security guards were aboard the train at the time but were located in another car, not where the stabbing occurred. In response to the killing, CATS officials said they have hired a chief safety and security officer, tripled their security budget, and begun upgrading outdated surveillance cameras. On September 22, the Charlotte city council is scheduled to consider expanding police patrols across buses and trains.Officials said the surveillance footage was released following repeated media requests. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to search for a motive in the seemingly unprovoked attack.

Elon Musk’s firm in talks with data centres, telcos; groundwork begins for broadband rollout

Elon Musk-owned Starlink has begun groundwork to set up terrestrial infrastructure in India, holding advanced talks with data centre operators, internet exchange providers, fibre players and telecom majors, as the satellite broadband firm prepares to launch services in a potentially high-growth market.According to people aware of the matter, the company is in discussions with data centre operators, including Sify Technologies, STT, Equinix and CtrlS Datacenters, internet exchange providers such as DE-CIX and Extreme, fibre infrastructure firms like Microscan, and telcos Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Tata Communications, reported ET. These tie-ups will form the terrestrial ecosystem needed to anchor satellite connectivity at scale, with analysts estimating an initial capital expenditure of around Rs 500 crore.Letters of intent are expected to be sent this month. Starlink has already secured the necessary clearances from Indian authorities and been allotted trial bandwidth. The company has finalised 17 locations for ground stations, which will connect its low-earth orbit satellites with terrestrial fibre and data networks.“Even as LEO satellites beam connectivity directly to user terminals, Indian regulations mandate that all downlink traffic be stored and routed locally,” a person aware of the matter was quoted as saying by ETadding that early tie-ups with fibre and data centres show Starlink is gearing for scale. The US company will compete with Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb and Reliance Jio-SES JV in India’s satcom market, where Jeff Bezos-led Amazon Kuiper and Apple’s partner Globalstar have also applied for permits. The Indian space economy is projected to grow to $44 billion by 2033, according to IN-SPACe.Starlink has also begun signing integration agreements. DE-CIX India last week confirmed a partnership with the company. “The integration will be crucial for maintaining high-speed throughputs especially for latency-sensitive applications like streaming, video conferencing, and online gaming,” said Sudhir Kunder, chief business officer at DE-CIX India, which handles 11 Tbps throughput across 36 PoPs in five cities. Extreme IXP also confirmed that Starlink is connected to its Mumbai port. The government recently granted Starlink a unified licence after it agreed to domestic security rules, including mandatory local routing of traffic, no copying or decrypting of Indian data overseas, and the establishment of earth station gateways within India. Minister of state for communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said such services will also generate employment through installation and maintenance of networks and user terminals.Starlink will use Aadhaar authentication for subscriber verification in India and currently has the capacity to onboard about 20 lakh customers.

At least two people were killed on Sunday after a mass Russian drone and missile strike hit Ukraine’s capital Kyiv sending smoke rising from the Cabinet of Ministers building. According to the Associated Press, it was not immediately clear if the smoke was caused by a direct hit, which would mark a major escalation in Russia’s air campaign. Officials said two people were killed and 11 others injured in the attack. Among the dead was a one-year-old child, whose body was pulled from the rubble by rescuers, said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s city administration. Russia has so far avoided targeting government buildings in the city center. This is the second mass Russian drone and missile attack on Kyiv in the span of two weeks, as hopes for peace talks continue to fade.(This is a developing story.)
