'Even I Can't Afford Your Car': Nitin Gadkari To Mercedes-Benz

Mumbai:

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday asked German premium car maker Mercedes-Benz to produce more cars locally and emphasised that such a move reduces the cost besides increasing affordability.

Speaking at the rollout of Mercedes-Benz India’s first locally assembled EQS 580 4MATIC EV from its Chakan manufacturing facility in Pune, Gadkari, who is the Minister for Road Transport and highways, said that there is a huge market for electric vehicles in the country.

“You increase the production, only then it is possible to reduce cost. We are middle-class people, even I can’t afford your car,” the minister said.

The latest EV from the German car maker comes with a price tag of Rs 1.55 crore.

The EQS 580 joins the company’s EQC SUV and AMG EQS53 4MATIC flagship EV.

Mercedes-Benz India started its electro-mobility drive in India with the launch of its all-electric SUV EQC as a fully imported unit in October 2020 priced at Rs 1.07 crore.

There are a total of 15.7 lakh registered electric vehicles in the country, according to Mr Gadkari.

There is a huge market with the overall EV sales rising 335 per cent, he said, adding that with the express highways coming up in the country, Mercedes-Benz India will get a good market for these cars.

The Indian Automobile size currently stands at Rs 7.8 lakh crore, in which exports are to the tune of Rs 3.5 lakh crore and “my dream is to make it a Rs 15-lakh crore industry”, he noted.

Mr Gadkari also mooted the idea of Mercedes-Benz setting up joint ventures for establishing vehicle scrapping units, which will help the company reduce its parts’ cost by as much as 30 per cent.

“As per our records, we have 1.02 crore vehicles ready for scrapping. We have only 40 units. My estimate is that we can open four scrapping units in one district. And so easily, we can open 2,000 such units,” he said.

“My suggestion is that you can set up some such units which will give you raw materials for recycling which will reduce your component cost by 30 per cent.” The government is encouraging such facilities, “and it is important that we will get cooperation from your side”, the minister said.

The EQS 580 4MATIC offers an 857 kms range (ARAI certified). The high power density of the lithium-ion battery comes with a usable energy content of 107.8 kWh and is equipped with a powerful 400-volt battery manufactured using the latest lithium-ion technology.

Vladimir Putin proclaims annexation, Ukraine's Zelensky hails gains: Top updates | World News

As Russia formally annexed four Moscow-held regions of Ukraine in a lavish ceremony organised in the Kremlin defying international law, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday hailed the successes of Kyiv’s counteroffensive in the east. “We have significant results in the east of our country. These steps mean a lot to us,” Zelensky said.

“We must liberate our entire land and this will be the best proof that international law and human values cannot be broken by any terrorist state, even one as insolent as Russia,” he added.

Here are top updates on the Russia-Ukraine war:

  1. Ukraine President Zelensky said during an address, “The path of our enemy is also completely clear — defeat, shame and condemnation.”
  2. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow has absorbed four Ukrainian regions as the war in Ukraine enters its eighth month.
  3. Accusing US and its allies of targeting Russia, Vladimir Putin vowed to use “all means available” to fend off attacks- repeating a reference to the country’s nuclear arsenals.
  4. “They want to see us as a colony. They don’t want equal cooperation, they want to rob us. They want to see us not as a free society, but a crowd of soulless slaves,” Putin said.
  5. Vladimir Putin also condemned the US for carpet bombings during the Korean and Vietnam wars. “They created a precedent, by the way,” Putin said.
  6. India's 'Deft' Diplomacy Forces China to Withdraw Proposal Against AUKUS Nuclear Plan at IAEA

China tried to get the resolution passed at the general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which took place in Vienna from September 26 to 30.

India’s ‘deft’ diplomacy was on display on the international stage that forced China to withdraw its resolution against AUKUS – the trilateral security pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

China tried to get the resolution passed at the general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which took place in Vienna from September 26 to 30. India however took an ‘objective view of the initiative, recognising the soundness the role of the technical evaluation by IAEA.’

According to PTI sources, China argued that the AUKUS initiative was in violation of their responsibilities under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). In addition, China also criticised the IAEA in this regard. The draft resolution opposed AUKUS for seeking to provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines, though these will be armed with conventional weapons.

“The Indian Mission to the IAEA in Vienna worked closely with many IAEA member states in this regard,” reports PTI attributing it to sources adding that India’s “deft and impactful” diplomacy was deeply appreciated by IAEA member states, particularly the AUKUS partners.

India’s considered role helped many smaller countries take a clear stand on the proposal by China. Realising that its resolution would not get majority support, China was forced to withdrew its draft resolution on September 30.

NASA Plans To Launch Its Moon Mega-Rocket In November

NASA Plans To Launch Its Moon Mega-Rocket In November

Nasa said it was preparing its next launch window for between November 12 and November 27.

Washington:

NASA said Friday it would try to launch its Moon mega-rocket in November, without committing to a precise date for the much-delayed Artemis 1 mission.

The US space agency, which was forced to postpone its latest liftoff attempt due to massive Hurricane Ian which hammered Florida this week, announced it was preparing its next launch window for between November 12 and November 27.

“Over the coming days,” NASA said in a blog post, the team will assess conditions and necessary work and “identify a specific date for the next launch attempt.”

Officials had so far refused to completely shut the door on an earlier attempt in October.

The SLS rocket, the most powerful ever designed by NASA, had to be returned to its storage hangar at Kennedy Space Center on Tuesday in order to shelter it from the approach of Hurricane Ian.

The storm devastated parts of Florida but the rocket itself suffered no damage, NASA said.

Planning efforts for the November launch window will allow “time for employees at Kennedy to address the needs of their families and homes after the storm” and in the run up to the next mission attempt.

Raising the 98-meter-high (320 foot) rocket and transporting it to its launch pad, before configuring it for takeoff, will also take days.

NASA has already made two attempts to launch the uncrewed Artemis 1 mission, in late August and early September, but both had to be scrapped at the last minute due to technical problems.

In development for more than a decade, SLS has never flown before.

Fifty years after the last mission of the Apollo program, Artemis is NASA’s new flagship program.

Artemis 1 will be used to ensure that the Orion capsule, at the top of the rocket, is safe to transport a crew to the Moon in the future.

International Day of Older Persons 2022: Staying physically and mentally healthy is important for all. Regardless of age, everyone should take care of their health

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS 2022: Older people are blessed with more wisdom, experience, gratitude, love, and strength. They serve as inspiration to the family members and society at large, with their vast knowledge and experience of varied topics. Instead of treating them with kindness, dignity and affection, and showing care, many older people are forgotten, ignored, or sent to old-age homes by their families.

In a bid to promote equal rights and freedoms for older persons, the United Nations (UN) came up with the International Day of Older Persons which is observed on the first Monday of October. This year, the day will be observed on October 1.

Staying physically and mentally healthy is important for all. Regardless of age, everyone should take care of their health. However, an older people’s body needs extra care as it undergoes many changes which may make them prone to falling sick like catching a cold or flu, pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma, diabetes, etc.

On the International Day of Older Persons, here are a few tips for them to remain healthy:

  1. Being active
Physical activity is good for the body and its immune system. You do not have to indulge in strenuous activities. Consider cycling, walking, swimming, or low-impact aerobics for at least 20-30 minutes each day. Engage your muscles to make them strong by lifting weights or doing yoga as per your body’s capacity.
  2. Supplements
With age, doctors sometimes recommend supplements to ensure that your body is getting proper nutrition. You may be advised to take calcium, Vitamin D, B6, or B-12. All these supplements and multivitamins boost your immune system to keep you healthy. Some supplements help support a healthy immune system. Before taking a supplement, always ask your doctor if it’s safe, especially if you’re on medication.
  3. Healthy Diet
Limit your fried food and sugary intake. Make sure to include fresh and local produce fruits and vegetables in your diet along with lean meats. Antioxidants from fruits and vegetables protect your cells from damage while the other nutrients from these food items will provide your body with the right nutrients.
  4. Frequent Health Check-ups
Schedule a routine check-up or annual check-up for necessary health concerns. Sometimes conditions like diabetes and heart issues can go undetected. Hence, a regular check-up is important to detect any health issues at the early stage. Visit the doctor if you feel uneasy or have cold and flu symptoms as with age, the immune system weakens, and fighting off such viruses may get more difficult.
  5. Get proper rest
Getting proper sleep can reduce your stress levels, give your body time to repair itself, and build a stronger immunity system.

PM Modi To Launch 5G Services At A Telecom Event Today

PM Modi To Launch 5G Services At A Telecom Event Today

The Centre has given a target of 80 per cent coverage of 5G in the country in a short timeframe.

New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch 5G services in India today in select cities. The service is expected to progressively cover the entire country over the next couple of years.

Here’s your 10-point cheatsheet to this big story:

  1. The PM will launch the much-awaited service at the 6th Edition of India Mobile Congress 2022 to be held from October 1-4, at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.

  2. India Mobile Congress (IMC), which claims to be the largest telecom, media, and technology forum in Asia, is jointly organised by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

  3. Besides powering ultra-low latency connections, which allow downloading full-length high-quality video or movie to a mobile device in a matter of seconds (even in crowded areas), 5G can enable solutions such as e-health, connected vehicles, more-immersive augmented reality and metaverse experiences, life-saving use cases, and advanced mobile cloud gaming, among others.

  4. “5G can unleash new economic opportunities and societal benefits, giving it the potential for being a transformational force for Indian society. It will help the country leapfrog the traditional barriers to development, spur innovations by startups and business enterprises as well as advance the ‘Digital India’ vision,” an official release said.

  5. India’s biggest ever auction of telecom spectrum held recently had received a record Rs 1.5 lakh crore of bids, with Mukesh Ambani’s Jio cornering nearly half of all the airwaves sold with a Rs 88,078 crore bid.

  6. The government has given a target of 80 per cent coverage of 5G telecom services in the country in a short timeframe, Union Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw had earlier said.

  7. Addressing an industry event in the national capital recently, Mr Vaishnaw had said, “the journey of 5G is going to be very exciting and noted that many countries took multiple years to reach 40 per cent to 50 per cent coverage. But we are targeting a very aggressive timeline and the Government has given a target of 80 per cent coverage in a short time frame, and we should definitely cover at least 80 per cent in a very short timeframe.”

  8. Experts have said 5G technology will greatly benefit India. It is likely to benefit the Indian economy by Rs 36.4 trillion ($455 billion) between 2023 and 2040, a recent report by a global industry body representing mobile network operators estimated.

  9. 5G will account for more than a third of total connections in India by 2030, with the share of 2G and 3G dwindling to less than 10 per cent, the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications) report said, noting that India’s high level of 4G adoption (79 per cent) indicates a subscriber base ready to transition to 5G.

  10. The report also estimated which sectors will realise how much benefit of 5G technology — manufacturing sector (representing 20 per cent of the total benefit), retail (12 per cent), and agriculture (11 per cent).India Mobile Congress (IMC), which claims to be the largest telecom, media, and technology forum in Asia, is jointly organised by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

North Korea Fires 2 Ballistic Missiles, 4th Test In A Week

North Korea Fires 2 Ballistic Missiles, 4th Test In A Week

Earlier, North Korea had fired 2 missiles on Thursday after US’ Kamala Harris left South Korea.

Tokyo:

North Korea on Saturday fired what appeared to be two ballistic missiles, Japan’s coast guard said, citing the defence ministry.

At least two projectiles were launched from North Korea, the coast guard said, while Japan’s public broadcaster NHK said the objects appears to have fallen outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

“What appears to be a ballistic missile was launched from North Korea,” the coast guard said in a statement issued at 6:47 am (2147 GMT).

In a second statement issued about 15 minutes later, the coast guard said another apparent ballistic missile was launched.

NHK said the both projectiles seemed to have fallen outside Japan’s exclusive economic zones, citing government sources.

Nuclear-armed North Korea has carried out a record-breaking blitz of weapons tests this year, including two ballistic missiles launched on Thursday, just hours after US Vice President Kamala Harris left South Korea.

South Korean and US officials have also been warning for months that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is preparing to conduct another nuclear test.

North Korea, which is under multiple UN sanctions for its weapons programmes, typically seeks to maximise the geopolitical impact of its tests with careful timing.

Mallikarjun Kharge set to be second Dalit Congress chief after Jagjivan Ram | India News

BENGALURU: Karnataka’s ‘solillada sardara’ (a warrior who knows no defeat) is the Gandhi family’s candidate for Congress presidentship. Mallikarjun Kharge, if elected, will be the second AICC president from Karnataka after S Nijalingappa (1968-69).

Kharge, with more than 50 years of experience in politics, will also be the sixth Congressman from south India after some stalwarts like Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, K Kamaraj and PV Narasimha Rao and the second Dalit leader to hold the top post after Jagjivan Ram (1970-1971).
Sober by temperament and nature, Kharge has the distinction of being the only politician from Karnataka to hold various positions and portfolios in the state and the Centre: Apart from serving as Union minister, he was twice the leader of the opposition in the Karnataka assembly – in 1994-1999 and 2008-2009 – and was also leader of the House in the state legislative council in 2004-2006. He was the floor leader in the Lok Sabha opposite PM Narendra Modi, although the Congress was not eligible to be the principal opposition party as it fell short of 10 seats, having won only 44 Lok Sabha seats in 2014. At present, he is the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, after Ghulam Nabi Azad.

He was several times seen as a top contender for the CM post in Karnataka but could never occupy it. His son, former minister and MLA Priyank Kharge, insists that “he is such a disciplined party worker that he never once disputed a decision made by the party leadership, including his own seat allocation”.
On his first day as the leader of the opposition, Kharge bemused the House with his colloquial ‘Hyderabadi Hindi’ as he took recourse to the epic Mahabharata to target BJP while rebutting criticism about Congress having only 44 members in the Lok Sabha. “You think we are 40 people and you are a strong 300, so suppress (us)! The Pandavas may have been very few in number, but they were never intimidated by a hundred Kauravas.”

“It is surely a rare feat a Dalit can achieve. It was possible because of his merit as a politician, loyalty as a partyman and the party’s ideology of upholding social justice,” said senior Congress MLC Mohan Kondajji. However, Kharge often insists that he should be identified as a “Congressman”, not a Dalit leader.
All along, he has got elected from a constituency reserved for Scheduled Castes – eight terms from the Gurmitkal assembly seat and one from Chittapur. He chose the SC-reserved Gulbarga when he had to contest the parliamentary polls. However, in 2019, he lost to BJP’s debutant Umesh Jhadav.

Kharge was born in 1942 in Varawatti village in Bidar district to Mapanna, a labourer in MSK Mills, and Sabavva. He earned his law degree at Gulbarga Law College. Starting off his political career as a student leader in college, he joined Dr BR Amebedkar’s RPI in 1968 before moving to Congress.
