Pannun plot will not affect strategic ties with India, says US

WASHINGTON: Charges by the US Justice Department of an India hand in the alleged plot to assassinate Khalistani extremist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil will not affect Washington’s strategic ties with New Delhi, although the US takes the matter seriously, the Biden White House said on Thursday.
“India remains a strategic partner, and we are going to continue to work to improve and strengthen that strategic partnership with India. At the same time, we take these allegations and this investigation very seriously,” White House spokesperson John Kirby said during a press briefing.

Separately, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was in Israel’s capital Tel Aviv, welcomed the investigation launched by India into the alleged plot to kill Pannun by a purported drug dealer, Nikhil Gupta, on directions from an Indian intelligence official, according to a Justice Department chargesheet.

“India remains a strategic partner…” US on Indian probe into alleged foiled plot to kill Pannun

“I can say that this is something we take very seriously. A number of us have raised this directly with the Indian government in past weeks. The government announced today that it was conducting an investigation, and that’s good and appropriate, and we look forward to seeing the results,” Blinken told reporters.

The remarks came amid raging speculation in US circles over whether the alleged plot was officially sanctioned by New Delhi or a rogue operation involving an errant intelligence official. India has denied it has a policy of conducting transnational killing of political enemies, but US media reports closely examined the career of India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, his remarks over the years as an intelligence boffin, and previous killings of political reprobates outside the country, including in Pakistan.

It now transpires that conversations between Washington and New Delhi on the alleged plot was taking place at the highest level even as the leaders visited each others country — Prime Minister Modi’s state visit to Washington DC in June and President Biden’s trip to New Delhi in September for the G20 summit, among them.

Biden, according to US officials, personally took up the issue with Modi after Washington had sent its two top intelligence officials, CIA Director William Burns and Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, to New Delhi to raise the issue. The US, according some reports, is inclined to take India’s word that it was not an officially sanctioned mission.
Washington’s “measured response, according to some diplomats in New Delhi, is a sign that US officials could have information to suggest that the plot did not go far up the chain in India,” the New York Times said in a report from New Delhi. The paper said US diplomats also pointed to “the sloppiness of the plot, as detailed in the court documents, which seems at odds with the sophistication of some top Indian security officials.”

Ali: Danish Ali writes to Speaker, says Bidhuri taking refuge in ‘fabricated’ counter complaint | India News

NEW DELHI: Days before BSP MP Kunwar Danish Ali is set to appear before the parliamentary privilege committee, he has written to Lok Sabha Speaker About Birla objecting to the committee’s decision to club his complaint against BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri for making communal slurs against him, with that of Bidhuri’s counter complaint by BJP MP’s containing “concocted, baseless and diversionary allegations.”
The Lok Sabha Committee of Privileges directed Ali to appear before it on December 7, asking him to give oral evidence regarding complaints made against him by Bidhuri.
In his letter to the Birla, Ali said he was shocked that the House panel clubbed his complaint with Bidhuri’s, even though Ali’s complaint against Bidhuri was lodged on September 22, 2023 and referred to racial and communal slurs against Ali on the floor of the House. Though Bidhuri’s remarks were later expunged from Parliament’s records, Ali said he lodged the complaint hoping for “swift, strict and exemplary action” to prevent the repeat of “ugly language” by any member in Parliament.
“What I see instead is a sad attempt to create a diversion by turning the victim to an accused. The notice I have received from the Committee of Privileges talks about getting oral evidence against me. This is outrageous. It would be a travesty of justice if the Committee of Privileges fails to act against Shri Bidhuri by taking refuge in the fabricated, malicious and clearly afterthought complaints against me. Shri Bidhuri had launched a one-sided and totally unprovoked abusive and unparliamentary attack on me. This was witnessed by the whole country as the proceedings were telecast live on television,” Ali said.
The BSP MP also requested the Speaker to obtain video footage of the Lok Sabha proceedings for the said day and to have it circulated, along with the transcript of proceedings, to members of the privileges committee.
“This would expose the lies being propagated and help clarify matters by identifying the real culprit,” he said, adding that since the matter concerns protecting the dignity of the House, the committee must strictly follow records of the House and “take a swift decision based on facts”.

Dissemination of fake news drowns out true information: CJI Chandrachud | India News

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud on Friday said dissemination of fake news drowns out true information and added disinformation has the power to impair democratic discourse.
Speaking at the 14th Justice VM Tarkunde Memorial Lecture on the topic “Upholding Civil Liberties in the Digital Age: Privacy, Surveillance and Free Speech”, the CJI said the goal of fake news is to erode the stability of foundational elements of society namely truth.
“Simply by virtue of the scale of dissemination, fake news drowns out true information, replacing the character of discourse from truth-seeking to the loudest voice,” the CJI said.
“Disinformation, therefore, has the power of impairing democratic discourse forever, pushing a marketplace of free ideas to the point of collapse under the immense weight of fake stories,” he added.
The CJI said a cursory glance at the newspaper every day will bring to the fore instances of communal and vigilante violence fuelled by fake rumours and targeted disinformation campaigns.
Across the globe – be it Libya, the Philippines, Germany or the United States – the elections and civil society have been tarnished by the proliferation of fake news, the CJI said.
“I remember that while the country was faced with the tragic COVID-19 pandemic, the internet was rife with the most outrageous fake news and rumours – a source of comic relief in difficult times, but also forcing us to rethink the limits of free speech on the internet,” he added.
The CJI said privacy in the digital age is not just a matter of data protection but it is a fundamental right that “we must actively champion”.
Contending the struggle to protect privacy is a global endeavour, he said the courts worldwide grapple with the challenges posed by technological advancements while highlighting the crucial need for legal frameworks.
Elaborating the cons of technology, the CJI said Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) represents a marvel of technological innovation, but its application raises significant privacy and discrimination concerns.
“Studies reveal inherent biases within FRT algorithms, especially in identifying darker-skinned women, ethnic minorities, and transgender individuals. The COVID-19 pandemic accentuated these concerns with controversies surrounding FRT’s use in health data management,” he added.
The CJI dispelled the claim that economic status and access to welfare entitlements are more important than civil and political rights for socio-economically disadvantaged communities.
All individuals regardless of their socio-economic status are deeply impacted by violations of the right to privacy, autonomy and intimacy, he said.
The CJI said in the realm of Artificial Intelligence, we find that the unchecked algorithms used by the tech giants compound privacy concerns.
“The dual nature of technology is apparent as a catalyst for progress harbouring inherent privacy risks. Surveillance analytics, despite its benefits in healthcare and crime prevention, prompts substantial privacy concerns,” the CJI said.
“Practices such as web cookies and social media data harvesting have raised alarm bells. The General Data Protection Regulation implemented by the European Union sets a global standard, prioritising individual privacy rights,” he added.
The CJI said collaborative effort between the policymakers, technology companies and informed citizens is imperative.
On the increased use of Unified Payments Interface (UPI), he said the adoption of digital payment solutions underscores the pervasive impact of technology.
“From the bustling streets of Mumbai to the tranquil landscapes of rural India, we see stories of ordinary individuals from various walks of life embracing UPI for seamless transactions. It is not just street vendors. It is the homemaker in Kanpur purchasing groceries, the small-town artisan selling handmade crafts in Madurai and the tech-savvy college student ordering a meal online in Pune – all contributing to the democratization of financial access,” the CJI said.
“This adoption of digital payment solutions resonates far beyond a specific demographic. It underscores the pervasive impact of technology in reshaping how we engage in commerce, transcending geographical and socioeconomic boundaries,” he added.

'Gray war zone' in South China sea a cause of concern: Indian Navy | India News

MUMBAI: Indirectly pointing fingers at China, the Indian Navy has termed the growing non-traditional security threats such as maritime terrorismpiracy, robbery, Illegal unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and drug/human/arm trafficking as ‘gray war zone‘ concerns in the South China Seaand that they were closely monitoring and analyzing the activities real-time before taking quick actions. When pointed out poor state of boats and shortage of staff for coastal policing around Mumbai, chief of western naval command vice admiral D K Tripathi said they had categorically communicated to the state administration not to compromise on coastal security and that they would provide training assistance and other expertise.
Vice admiral Tripathi was addressing a press conference ahead of Indian Navy Day celebrations. For the first time, Indian Navy’s western naval command will host the celebrations on December 4 in Malwan, Sindhudurg, a distant district down Konkan instead of the Mumbai headquarters in the presence of the prime minister. The celebrations have been arranged as a mark of respect to Navy’s founder Chhatrapati Shivaji coinciding with his 350th coronation anniversary this year. With the commissioning of 21 ships and five submarines in the last nine years, all constructed in Indian shipyards, the Indian Navy is determined to be self-reliant. Navy has concluded 12 shipbuilding contracts worth over Rs 1.15 lakh cr and as on today 65 out of 67 ships and submarines are in various stages of construction in the Indian shipyards.
“The IUU fishing and human/arms and drugs trafficking are necessitating development of fresh paradigms of maritime security. Piracy and armed robbery at sea have flared up in new regions over the past decade and remain a significant threat to international shipping and seafarers constant unregulated activities pose a considerable challenge. In May this year one of our ships intercepted and seized a narcotics shipment of 2525 kg with an estimated value of Rs 25000 crore from a boat in the West Arabian Sea making it the largest narcotics seizure ever by any Indian agency,” said Tripathi.
Commenting on gray areas of concern, vice admiral Tripathi said, “Indian as well as other navies are fully aware of seriousness of the threats in not just the Indian ocean but also in south China sea. We are continuously monitoring who is doing what and where. All activities are being analyzed and relevant extracts after analysis are being provided to the authorities at headquarters followed by actions by deploying units.” Similarly, he termed cyber domain, the fifth dimension of warfare, as a serious threat. “There are structures working in open domain. We have done a full assessment and audit of the vulnerability of cyber control on our weapon sensors, communication set ups, and other equipments and know what is at stake. It’s like ‘chor (thief)-police game’ where police have to assess what thief can do to crack cyber security. Cyber agencies of navy are working to safeguard our network which is robust,” he said pointing out that navy had instructed even officials to stay away from enticing mobile apps which can monitor and analyze them, and the same information can be used against us.
Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi said very soon a woman commanding officer will be commissioned (on fast attack craft INS Trinkat) in the western naval command and 20 years down the line we may have a woman chief of western naval command addressing the naval day press conference. He praised the newly inducted women agniveers for their passion.
Meanwhile, to a query he said the navy was looking at inducting a more improvised version of minesweepers since there was a deficiency of them. These minesweeper ships are mainly aimed at clearing the areas of mines laid during the wartime in the sea lanes and thus protect the warships and merchant navy ships from the damages. “We will start the acquisition process for them with little amendment in their specifications,” he added.

Bombay HC: Every court should have dedicated VC link to ensure inmates are produced online if not physically | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Observing that physically bringing undertrial prisoners to the court is a ‘cumbersome procedure’ that consumes time, money and resources, the Bombay high court has directed they be produced via the videoconferencing (VC) mode.
Justice Bharati Dangre directed it is necessary that every court shall have a dedicated link and its technicalities shall be worked out with the Central Processing Complex assistance and the concerned department of the Maharashtra government, if at all there are any security concerns.
“If the dedicated links are allotted to the prison authorities, and time slots are scheduled by the respective Courts, which are also intimated in advance, production of the accused persons can be a simple procedure instead of carrying the prisoners physically to the Court,” said Justice Dangre adding it would necessitate more VC units in the prison as well as more screens in the Court, as every Court would require at least three screens to make it effective and practical.
The state must ensure necessary funds so that every court is equipped with screens and other VC facilities, said the HC while hearing a bail plea by TR Yadav whose lawyer said it was adjourned 23 times by the trial court as he was not produced before the court physically or through VC mode.
A report of Arthur Road jail said 250 prisoners are produced daily either physically or through 16 VC units available in jail, of which some are used for connecting the prisoners with their relatives. In Taloja jail, nearly 60 prisoners were produced before the court daily through physical or virtual mode through 19 VC units. Inmates complained of not being produced in court.
A report submitted by an amicus curiae Satyavrat Joshi appointed by the HC after a visit said that inmates not being produced before the court on several dates was “a cause for unrest among the prisoners.”
The report also refers to consistent complaints about the network connectivity and suggests better internet connection so as to make the VC facility more effective.
The advocate also pointed to certain flaws in the working of the VC mechanism, on his inspection of the VC facilities in the two major prisons, being non- non-allocation of a separate budget for the VC facility as well as its maintenance. He also emphasized “ on non-availability of technicians to operate the VC units. He would highlight that on interacting with the prisoners, they made a serious grievance about not being produced either through VC facility or in person on several dates’ ‘.
The HC asked prosecutor Y M Nakhwa to forward the reports to the home department to take necessary steps. He submitted a report by the Inspector of Prisons and Correctional Services which stated that 39 prisons in the state were given multiple VC units with the highest 21 units in Thane central prison.
“At various stages it may not be necessary to produce the accused, as production of the accused physically in court is a cumbersome procedure, which consumes time, money and resources,” Justice Dangre noted.
The judge said it was necessary that every undertrial prisoner must be produced before the court on an allotted date and every court has a designated link so that authorities do not have to search for the links at the eleventh hour.”
The HC, which will hear the matter next on December 4.
“Every Court which is entrusted with a trial and require production of any accused at any stage, it shall ensure that a date is allotted which is intimated to the prison authorities, through the Police Station In-charge, who acts as a Coordinator between the prison and Court, so that every under- trial prisoner is produced before the court either through VC or through physical mode” the HC order said.

This feel-good film is agreeably cooked to cater for a broad palate

Annapoorani Movie Synopsis: A woman from a Brahmin family wants to become the best chef in the country, but to do so, she will have to master making non-vegetarian dishes as well, going against her orthodox family’s beliefs and values.

Annapoorani Movie Review: Right from the time the titles play out, Annapoorani makes it clear that its titular heroine (Nayanthara) has the gift of cooking; in fact, right from birth, she has an extraordinary sense of taste. Her father Rangarajan (Achyuth Kumar) is so devoted to Lord Ranganathar that he has chosen to serve food to the God rather than take up a job in the railways. This is why when Annapoorani decides to become a chef, the very idea is shot down – can a girl belonging to a family that serves food to the God cook ‘impure’ non-vegetarian food?

Director Nilesh Krishnaa paints this tale in broad brushstrokes, but the film manages to be perfectly agreeable. In a sense, it is the McD of feel-good/inspirational dramas. Nothing exceptional, but very much palatable. In fact, for a film revolving around food, the film hardly has any memorable shots of food or of the cooking process.

The film plays out like two distinct halves pre and post-intermission. If the first half focuses on the diemma of a woman from an orthodox family trying to learn cooking without causing them any hurt, in the second, she has to discover her love for it, following an event that robs her of her gift, and prove herself on a MasterChef-like reality show. The director literalises the challenges that his protagonist has to overcome in the process by way of animated segments in which a young girl climbs peaks that she has to I order to achieve her dream. It is both simplistic and an overkill – just like the film’s attempts at promoting religious harmony, and Thaman’s wall-to-wall background score.

Nayanthara uses her screen presence to make us root for Annapoorani and her superstardom to spell out the messages of women empowerment that the film wants to convey. Like, “Thapukku responsibility eduthukara rights kooda ponnungalukku illa”. But performance-wise, hers, too, is of the fast-food variety – functional, with the stock expressions we have come to expect from her; in fact, in the portions when the character loses her gift, we see her channeling her performance from Netrikann!

The rest of the actors offer solid support – Achyuth Kumar (and Jayaprakash, who has dubbed for him) brings out the conflicted frame of mind of someone who wants to stay true to his values. Sathyaraj, as Chef Anand, a renowned chef who is Annapoorani’s role model, plays the supportive mentor, and gets to even recreate a moment from his Amaidhi Padai. Jai, as Farhan, a childhood friend and lover of Annapoorani, plays the second fiddle to Nayanthara in the same entertaining way as he did in Raja Rani. And Karthik Kumar tries to offer a couple of more layers to the caricaturish villain of the story; he plays a chef who’s envious of the heroine and has to constantly seek validation from his father.

But the inherent inspirational element in the plot ensures that we stay rooted in our seats and the director ensures that there’s something entertaining in the scenes. In fact, the film does give us a high when we see visuals of more women entering classrooms and the kitchens of hotels riding on Annapoorani’s achievement.

Rishab Shetty denies taking 'should not leave the Kannada film industry' jibe at Rashmika Mandanna | Hindi Movie News

Rashmika Mandanna had found herself at the receiving end of criticism after she refused to name the production house that had roped her in for her debut film Church Party. Since then, rumours of the feud between Rashmika and Kannda star Rishab Shetty began. Recently, a statement from Rishabwas perceived to be an indirect dig at Rashmika. However, Rishab has now come clean on his statement.
At IFFI 2023 press conference last week, Rishab had said that he doesn’t want to be the person who leaves the Kannada film industry after giving one hit with Kantara.
When asked if he would be interested in doing Hindi films, Rishab said, “After the success of Kantara, I received offers not only from Hindi films but from several other languages besides Kannada. There are many beautiful opportunities that I am missing because I feel I should not leave the Kannada film industry. It’s a sentiment. ‘When a film becomes a hit, this industry is being destroyed, it should not be like this.’”

‘Animal’: Honest Public Review of Ranbir Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Rashmika Mandanna’s movie

On Friday, a fan apologised for misconstruing Rishab’s statement after receiving severe backlash. “My sincere apologies to @shetty_rishab this is what he actually said. He meant that he doesn’t want to be called a person who’s leaving the industry after delivering one hit. It does not imply “I’m not leaving Kannada industry like others”. Lot of difference,” read the tweet.
Respoding to the fan’s tweet, Rishab tweeted, “No problem, ☺️ finally someone understood what I really meant to say.”

For the uninitiated, Rashmika and Rakshit Shetty were engaged in July 2017, but unfortunately, the engagement was later called off in September 2018. The decision to end their engagement was mutual, and both actors cited personal reasons for the separation.

Rakshit happened to be the close friend of Rishab Shetty. Rashmika and Rakshit shared screen space together in Kirik Party, directed by Rishab. The movie was both a critical and commercial success. Following the breakup, both Rakshit and Rashmika continued to focus on their respective careers in the film industry.
Rishab recently announced the prequel of Kantara. The makers of Kantara Chapter 1 unveiled the film’s teaser which received good responses from the audience. Rashmika, on the other hand, is currently seen in director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal which released this Friday. The film also stars Ranbir Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor among several others.
