‘Torrents of muddy water’: Video shows Kullu flash floods; NH blocked, restoration under way

NEW DELHI: Multiple flash floods were reported on Sunday across Mandi district, including Panarsa, Takoli and Nagwain along the Mandi-Kullu stretch of the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway. The highway has been blocked at several points, bringing traffic to a standstill and causing major disruption.Incessant heavy rainfall and a cloudburst have triggered flash floods in the region, with visuals showing torrents of muddy water rushing through affected areas. Authorities said no casualties have been reported so far. “No reports of human loss have been received in the incidents,” Sachin Hiremath, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mandi, told news agency ANI. Police are maintaining a strict vigil at vulnerable sites while restoration work is underway to reopen the highway and restore traffic.Widespread damage across Himachal PradeshThe flash floods come as Himachal Pradesh continues to grapple with one of its most destructive monsoon seasons in recent years. 'Choro Ko Hataiye, Hume Jitaiye': Lalu Prasad Yadav Accuses BJP of 'Stealing' Votes; Calls for opposition unity at 16-day 'Voter adhikar yatra'

NEW DELHI: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav on Sunday took a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), referring to the party as “thieves,” while speaking at the launch of the Congress-led ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Sasaram. Yadav accused BJP of harming democracy by stealing people’s votes and appealed Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge to join hands with the RJD and his son Tejashwi yadav to “uproot the BJP and throw them away.”“Choro ko hataiye, BJP ko bhagaiye, aur hume jitaiye (Remove the thieves, make the BJP run away, help us win),” Yadav said. “At any cost, do not let the BJP, which is a thief, come to power. Everyone, stand united, and together, Rahul Gandhi, Tejashwi Yadav, uproot them and throw them away. Save democracy,” he added, as quoted by ANI.The ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ is a 16-day campaign by the Congress to protest alleged ‘vote chori’. The march began in Sasaram on Sunday with the participation of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Pawan Khera, Kanhaiya Kumar and other leaders.Addressing the rally, Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP and the Election Commission of manipulating elections. “The entire country knows what the Election Commission is doing. Earlier, the country did not know how votes were being stolen. But we made it clear in the press conference how votes are being stolen. Whenever the theft is happening, whether in Bihar, Maharashtra, Assam, Bengal, we will catch the thief and work to show the people,” he said. Gandhi described Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) as a “conspiracy” by the Election Commission and claimed the “vote theft has been exposed.”The Election Commission, in response, said errors in electoral rolls should be raised during the “Claims and Objections” period. It noted that electoral rolls are shared with all political parties to ensure transparency, but added that parties and their booth-level agents often fail to review them when required, reported ANI.RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav also hit out at the Election Commission and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing them of deceiving Bihar’s voters. “Narendra Modi is dead set on destroying the lives of the youth of Bihar. Modi makes the illiterate clap for him and does politics. But we engage in the politics of distributing work to everyone’s hands. Today, that is why we are here. Election Commission, Modi Bihario ko choona lagana chahate hai (want to scam the people of Bihar). Do not think of Biharis as weak,” he said.Invoking socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia, he underlined the importance of protecting voting rights. “Lalu and Lohia have always been saying that ‘the rule of votes means the rule of small’. Our Constitution, Babasaheb Ambedkar, has given us all this right and given us the power to vote. Whether it is someone poor, rich, or powerful, everyone has the right to give one vote, which is given by the Constitution,” he added.

Save Delhi-NCR strays: When RSS chief & Rahul Gandhi speak in unison for the voiceless | India News

‘Step Back on Humane Policy’ Rahul Gandhi Criticises SC Ruling on Stray Dog Relocation

A helpless stray (TOI)

Disagreement is inherent in Indian politics. But the recent Supreme Court order on the removal of stray dogs from Delhi-NCR has brought the RSS chief and the ideologically opposite Gandhis of Congress on the same page, amid growing anger across India over the same.Yes, from Sangh’s Mohan bhagwat to siblings Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, as well as their cousin Varun and his mother Maneka Gandhi of BJP, all have spoken out in unison against the “death sentence” meted out to the strays of Delhi-NCR.Bhagwat has advocated for a humane and scientific way to regulate the population of strays in the capital and its outskirts over mass confinement in pounds in far-off places — an approach that echoes the animal birth control (ABC) rules mandated under law.“All animals have the right to live. The problem can be solved only by regulating the population of street dogs, but it cannot be resolved by putting them in shelters,” Bhagwat, a veterinary science graduate, said at a religious congregation in Cuttack on Thursday.“Sheltering all street dogs is not a practical solution. The only effective way is to implement sterilisation and vaccination, as already prescribed in law,” he added.Echoing similar voice, leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi has termed SC’s order to remove all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR “as a step back from decades of humane, science-backed policy”.These voiceless souls are not “problems” to be erased, he wrote on X, a day after the SC order. “Shelters, sterilisation, vaccination & community care can keep streets safe — without cruelty. Blanket removals are cruel, shortsighted, and strip us of compassion. We can ensure public safety and animal welfare go hand in hand.”Similarly, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has described the dogs as “the most beautiful creatures who do not deserve this kind of cruelty”. “The moving of all the city’s stray dogs to shelters within a matter of weeks is going to result in horrendously inhumane treatment of them. Enough shelters do not even exist to take them on.”Their cousin and former BJP Lok Sabha MP Varun Gandhi has described the SC order as “institutionalisation of cruelty” and “a harbinger of a legal structure that seeks to punish those who cannot fend for themselves”. “Nations face deeper moral crises when they step away from empathy,” he wrote on X.Summing up the RSS chief and Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi’s unprecedented show of support for the voiceless, noted animal rights activist Maneka Sanjay Gandhi told TOI that the “issue is above politics”.“It is about the soul of India. The word animal comes from anima which means soul. Are we going to survive as a compassionate society or will we become soulless violent people,” Gandhi, a former Union minister said.

Voter Adhikar Yatra: Bihar minister takes dig at Rahul Gandhi; tells him to thank Nitish for smooth roads making 'big yatra' possible | India News

Rahul Gandhi's EXPLOSIVE ‘Rigging’ Allegation Against ECI Ahead Of Bihar Assembly Polls

Rahul Gandhi (Left), Nitish Kumar (Toi)

NEW DELHI: Bihar minister Ashok Choudhary on Sunday took a sharp dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ahead of the launch of the party’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’, saying he should thank chief minister Nitish kumar for improving road infrastructure in the state, which made the rally possible, reported news agency ANI.“Rahul Gandhi should thank Nitish Kumar, for the roads that used to be in such bad shape are now so smooth that Rahul Gandhi is even able to take out a Yatra… He should be grateful that such a big Yatra will be possible due to Nitish Kumar’s roads,” Choudhary said, as quoted by the agency. The Congress-led yatra is being launched from Sasaram in protest against the election commission’s special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar. The party, along with INDIA block allies, alleges large-scale voter exclusion and “vote theft”.Senior leaders including RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, former Bihar deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav, Congress president mallikarjun kharge and Rahul Gandhi are expected to participate. Preparations for the event are underway outside in Patna.Bihar leader of opposition Tejashwi Yadav, addressing the media on Saturday, said the campaign aims to raise awareness among voters whose names have been excluded from the electoral list.“We are starting the ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra’ from Sasaram tomorrow. Tomorrow, we will all be with the Mahagathbandhan allies. We will visit several districts, and our effort will be to make people aware so that no voter’s name is left out. We also have fought for this and got a relief from the Supreme Court in this matter, whether it is the Supreme Court direction to the Election Commission of India to publish the list of 65 lakh persons excluded or deleted from the Bihar draft electoral voters list, along with the reasons,” Yadav said. Calling the yatra as a “historical journey”, Tejashwi said the Mahagathbandhan would take its message to multiple districts and seek public support. “Tomorrow, Rahul Gandhi and other leaders of the Mahagathbandhan will go among the people and make them aware of voter rights. Along with this, we will also raise the local issues. We will also convey what our vision would be if we form our government. This is going to be a historical journey, and we will get the blessings of the Bihar voters,” he added. The yatra will begin on Sunday, from Sasaram, Bihar.

'God has made me the protector of Pakistan'; Pak Army Chief Asim Munir broke silence on the discussion of becoming president

Asim Munir News: Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir has rejected speculation of any change under the leadership of the country. Munir described the rumors of the dismissal of President Asif Ali Zardari as completely false and described them against both the government and the establishment. In July, there were reports on social media that President Zardari could be asked to leave the post and Army Chief Asim Munir could hold the top post. However, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi denied such claims.

Jung Media Group’s columnist Suhail Varaich claimed in an article published on Saturday that the army chief personally spoke to him on the matter during a recent meeting in Brussels. Munir stayed in Belgium for some time after returning from a trip to America last week.

Varaich said, “The conversation started with politics, especially on the rumors that efforts are being made to change both the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan. Field Marshal Munir clearly stated that the news of change is completely false.”

He quoted the army chief as saying, “There are elements behind this (rumor) who oppose both the government and the army and want to create political chaos.” The article claimed that Munir also mentioned her ambitions in the Brussels’ meeting. He said, “God has made me the protector of the country. I have no desire for any other position other than that.”

There is speculation that President Asif Ali Zardari may soon leave the post. This can pave the way for the Chief of Army Staff to take over the President of the country. All this happened after the newly appointed Field Marshal’s visit to America twice within a month. During the US visit, he had a conversation with the top American leadership, ignoring Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

Munir also looked confident about balanced the relations between America and China. He described the peace efforts of US President Donald Trump as real. But insisted that Pakistan will not sacrifice another friend for one friend.

Earlier, at the peak of ‘Operation Sindoor’, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had asked Munir not to leave the post, not Prime Minister Sharif. This shows that Munir’s power is more than its head of the country.

Bharat Munir considers Munir as the mastermind of the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 tourists were shot and killed. Munir often describes Kashmir as Pakistan’s “throat vein” and emphasizes the division between Hindus and Muslims.

NEW DELHI: Pakistan on Sunday unveiled a bold 17-member squad for the upcoming triangular T20I series in Sharjah and the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE, leaving out seasoned campaigners Babar azam and Mohammad Rizwan in a major shift of strategy. The squad, led by Salman Ali Agha, reflects the selectors’ preference for aggressive batters such as Saim Ayub, Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Speaking at the squad announcement, Javed struck a defiant tone, declaring: “This team has the ability to beat India in the Asia Cup. Whether you like it or not, the match between India and Pakistan is the biggest in world cricket. Every player knows this.”

Poll

What is your opinion on the squad’s overall balance without the experienced players?

With India and Pakistan drawn together in Group A, their clash on September 14 in Dubai is already being billed as the highlight of the eight-team tournament. The political backdrop adds further tension, following the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor. Despite calls from sections of India to boycott the fixture, the stage remains set for one of the sport’s fiercest rivalries.Javed expressed confidence in the squad’s balance and readiness: “Our squad can beat any team. Everyone is ready. Everyone knows the situation surrounding the two countries. But we don’t need to put extra pressure on them.”Head coach Mike Hesson, meanwhile, offered insight into Babar Azam’s exclusion, noting that the star batter has been asked to work on key aspects of his T20 game. “There’s no doubt Babar has been asked to improve in some areas, particularly against spin and in terms of his strike-rate,” Hesson said. He added that Babar’s upcoming Big Bash League stint with Adelaide Strikers would be crucial in proving his evolution as a T20 player.Pakistan will first test their new-look squad in a triangular T20I series involving Afghanistan and the UAE (Aug. 29–Sept. 7 in Sharjah) before heading into the Asia Cup (Sept. 9–28 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi). With Javed backing the young guns to deliver and the India clash looming, the stakes could not be higher.

Farewell to Dan Tana: The man behind LA’s legendary ‘Little Yellow House’

Farewell to Dan Tana: The man behind LA’s legendary ‘Little Yellow House’

Dan Tana, the unforgettable restaurateur behind the iconic West Hollywood spot Dan Tana’s, has passed away at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy as rich and comforting as his famous chicken parm, Variety reported. Born as Dobrivoje Tanasijević near Belgrade, Serbia, Dan Tana began his life journey as a professional soccer player, weaving in and out of Canada’s leagues. Then he shifted gears, tried his hand at acting, and even appeared in The Enemy Below in 1957. Eventually, he found his calling, in hospitality, starting as a dishwasher at Villa Capri and later maître d’ at La Scala. In 1964, Dan Tana took over a humble burger joint on Santa Monica Boulevard and transformed it into Dan Tana’s, a cozy Italian-American gem serving hearty classics like chicken Parmesan. He envisioned it as a late-night hideaway, because back then, if you wanted decent pasta after midnight, your only option was a diner.Slowly but surely, it caught fire, especially after Richard Burton became a regular. Soon enough, stars like Johnny Carson, Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, and the Rat Pack were all elbows-deep in fettuccine. The lore says Vega$ even named its main character, “Dan Tanna,” after the man himself. What made Dan Tana’s magic wasn’t the fanciest menu, it was the vibe. Wooden booths, red-and-white-checkered tablecloths, and green neon glows, it felt like the L.A. you didn’t know existed anymore. As some classics shut their doors in the city, Dan Tana’s held on, staying just the same. Patrons could vanish for years and come back, and the same bartender would remember their favorite drink. On August 16, 2025, the restaurant posted a simple, heartfelt tribute: “The great Dan Tana has passed on. We all know that he created a very magical place. Our beloved little yellow house will forever feel his presence. “Dan started out working for La Scala and The Villa Capri in the 1950s. It was working for those classic eateries that encouraged him to open his own! And he did just that. He was always proud of where he came from and what he accomplished, a former soccer star from Yugoslavia.”“Dan had wonderful stories about Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio, James Dean, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis. In fact Robert Urich’s character was named after Dan Tana on the classic TV show, “Vega$.”“Today Dan Tana’s is owned by his dear friend Sonja Perencevic who’s kept it exactly the same since 1964.“This man is a legend, and as you know a legend never dies.”Dan Tana’s journey, soccer, acting, and then creating a home for stars, reads like a good screenplay. But the real screen magic happened in that dining room, where storytelling happened one table at a time.

'He is 18 years old but a kid': LA high school senior was walking his dog when ICE took him into custody - Who is Benjamin Marcelo Guerrero Cruz?

A Los Angeles high school senior was taken into custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents last week, allegedly leaving his dog loose on the street during the arrest. The student, identified as 18-year-old Benjamin Marcelo Guerrero Cruz, was detained in Van Nuys on Friday, August 8, according to Newsweek citing GoFundMe campaign created on his behalf.

‘American Nightmare’: Anti-ICE Protests Rock NYC Federal Plaza; Arrests Amid Trump Deportations

Guerrero-Cruz helps take care of his 5-month-old twin brothers and his 6-year-old brother, the GoFundMe post said. He’s described in the post as a “devoted son, a caring brother, a loyal friend, and a valued member of our community,” ABC news reported. The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) confirmed the incident and its spokesperson said, “Los Angeles Unified stands united in protecting every student and family during this period of heightened immigration enforcement.”“Working closely with city leaders and municipal partners, we have strengthened safety measures at and around our schools. This includes enhanced communication with various entities, visible presence in impacted communities, and rapid-response protocols should enforcement activity occur.” The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told KTLA that Cruz had overstayed his visa by more than two years, with his visa waiver programme expiring in March 2023. Cruz is currently held in ICE detention in LA. As of Friday morning, over Rs 24,000 had been raised to cover his legal fees and basic needs for his mother and siblings, who also live in fear of federal agents. Friends have expressed support for Cruz, with his soccer teammates describing him as reliable, respectful, and kind. The arrest coincided with the temporary detention of a 15-year-old student with disabilities elsewhere in LA on Monday morning. In response, LAUSD is deploying staff and school police to patrol streets around 100 schools to protect students from ICE and other agents. At a news conference on Thursday, LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho stated, “He is 18 years old, but he’s a kid. He has not been exposed to anything in his life. He drinks water once a day. The food is insufficient. Mom said that there was not enough room for everybody to sit or lie down at the same time.” Ronny C, a soccer teammate of Cruz, said on the GoFundMe page, “We’re devastated to lose such a good kid and great teammate. On the field, he was rock-solid—always showed up, worked hard, and could be counted on week after week. Off the field, he was just as reliable: kind, respectful, and someone who lifted up the people around him. He brought consistency, heart, and a quiet strength that made the team better in every way. It’s heartbreaking to see him taken from us like this, and we’ll truly miss not just the player, but the person he was.” The standoff between LA officials, including Mayor Karen Bass, and the Trump administration continues, with the President stating that ICE has full authority to arrest and detain individuals in sanctuary cities suspected of being illegally present in the U.S.

Former Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has criticised Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg’s recent statements about Test cricket’s future. Johnson disagrees with Greenberg’s view that not all countries need to aspire to play Test cricket or bear its financial losses.Test cricket, the traditional five-day format of the sport, faces challenges due to its high costs. With declining attendance and shorter attention spans, cricket boards with limited resources are struggling to maintain the format.A proposed solution, supported by Johnson, suggests dividing Test cricket into two tiers. The top tier would include wealthy nations like India, England, and Australia, while other countries would compete in the second tier. This system would include promotion and relegation between tiers.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!“Here’s the thing — if that’s the fear, then we’ve already missed the point. The solution to saving Test cricket isn’t to scale it down to three or four rich countries. It’s to lift the rest up. Help them. Grow the game. Back them,” Johnson wrote in his column for The West Australian.“This is where real leadership starts — not by pulling up the ladder, but by building a stronger base. Because let’s be clear: these nations want to play Test cricket. The players want it. The fans want it. So why are we making it so hard? I’ve been to countries where cricket isn’t backed by billion-dollar TV deals — but the passion is still there.”Johnson suggests that instead of financial support alone, the Big Three nations should provide guidance and physical presence to smaller cricket boards. This assistance would help develop the game from grassroots level and engage audiences effectively.“Because here’s the reality: if we only leave Test cricket to the wealthy, it dies a slow death. Fans see through that. Players lose hope. And one by one, countries quietly drift towards the formats that pay quicker and hurt less. West Indies cricket has been an example of this. But Test cricket is supposed to hurt. It’s supposed to demand more. That’s the beauty of it. You don’t earn a baggy green or a Test cap because you’ve bowled four overs, including a couple in the powerplay.“You earn it over years — through bruises, setbacks, second-innings spells in 40C heat when your body says no and your heart says yes. And that feeling isn’t exclusive to Australia or India or England. It lives in the soul of every young cricketer from all parts of the world. The only difference is opportunity.”
