Google picks Tennessee as site for its nuclear reactor, what makes the project important at a time when America has stopped building nuclear plants

Google picks Tennessee as site for its nuclear reactor, what makes the project important at a time when America has stopped building nuclear plants

Alphabet’s Google and nuclear startup Kairos Power announced a landmark partnership on Monday to deploy an advanced nuclear plant in Tennessee, with the goal of connecting to the Tennessee Valley Authority‘s (TVA) electric grid by 2030. The project marks a significant step toward a new era of nuclear power in the United States, which has seen a halt in new construction for decades. The last two reactors built in the U.S. at Plant Vogtle in Georgia cost $18 billion more than expected and started operations seven years behind schedule in 2023 and 2024. The project’s problems are reported to have played a role in the bankruptcy of industry giant Westinghouse.Under the agreement, TVA has committed to purchasing up to 50 megawatts of power from Kairos Power’s Hermes 2 reactor. According to a report by CNBC, this is the first time that a U.S. utility has signed a power purchase agreement with an advanced nuclear reactor, according to the companies. The electricity generated, enough to power approximately 36,000 homes, will be used to support Google’s energy-intensive data centers in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and Jackson County, Alabama.

Google plans to solve America’s nuclear industry problems

The partnership aims to tackle a major obstacle that has plagued the U.S. nuclear industry: the immense cost and financial risk associated with building new plants. In this collaboration, Kairos and Google will bear the financial burden of constructing the first-of-its-kind project, while TVA provides a stable revenue stream through its power purchase agreement. The U.S. has not seen significant nuclear construction for decades due to massive budget overruns and delays, such as the Plant Vogtle project in Georgia, which went $18 billion over budget and started operations seven years late.

Why startups are betting on Nuclear energy

Startups like Kairos Power are betting that their smaller, more affordable advanced reactors can avoid the issues that plagued large-scale projects like Vogtle. The Hermes 2 reactor, which received its construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in November 2024, is scheduled to begin operations in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, by 2030. The companies will still need to secure an operating license from the NRC before the plant can go live. For technology giants like Google, advanced nuclear power represents a crucial part of their strategy to meet the rising energy demands of artificial intelligence while maintaining their commitment to carbon-free energy. Google has already placed orders with Kairos for a total of 500 megawatts of power from future reactors, targeting a 2035 rollout.

Overcrowding, power glitch: Why Mumbai monorail got stuck? Over 400 rescued | India News

Overcrowding, power glitch: Why Mumbai monorail got stuck? Over 400 rescued

NEW DELHI: Over 400 passengers got stranded for over three hours after a monorail broke down between two stations in Mumbai amid torrential rains.According to officials, all the passengers were rescued after the rescue operations were immediately deployed and teams from the BMC, the fire department and the police worked to evacuate passengers safely.Video footage showed emergency personnel at the site helping passengers out of the stranded train. Authorities ensured that the affected passengers were being taken to nearby hospitals as a precaution.

Why did the monorail get stuck?

  • According to officials the train was overcrowded after local train services were suspended due to waterlogging caused by the ongoing heavy rains.
  • Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority said that the total weight of the train rose to around 109 metric tonnes, which exceeded its designed capacity of 104 metric tonnes.
  • This excess weight caused a break in the mechanical contact between the power rail and the current collector, cutting off the electricity supply required to run the train.
  • “In one coach there were around 70-75 people which led to overcrowding of coach,” Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde said.
  • Shinde said that passenger overload caused the Monorail to tilt to one side, leading to a technical problem which is being investigated.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said that an inquiry would be conducted into the incident.“Due to some technical reason, a Monorail is stuck between Chembur and Bhakti Park. MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority), the fire brigade, and the municipal corporation, all agencies have reached the spot. The highest priority is being given to the safety of all passengers,” Fadnavis posted on X. He urged people not to worry. “No one should worry or panic as all passengers will be safely evacuated,” he added. The incident comes amid record rainfall in Mumbai over the past 24 hours, which has caused flooding, disruption of local trains, and traffic snarls across the city.

Donetsk don't-tell: Donald Trump forces Zelenskyy-Trump meeting but no word about captured territory

Donetsk don't-tell: Donald Trump forces Zelenskyy-Trump meeting but no word about captured territory

TOI correspondent from Washington: MAGA supremo Donald Trump appears to have succeeded in propelling Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy — backed by European leaders — towards a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin by warning him that he would lose even more territory and lives if the war continues. No word yet on when and where such a meeting will take place, much less the contours of a peace agreement. The US president also offered sketchy security guarantees to Ukraine to make peace with Russia, while invoking a divine mission for himself. “I want to try and get to heaven if possible. I hear I’m not doing well. I hear I’m really at the bottom of the totem pole. But if I can get to heaven, this (stopping the killing) will be one of the reasons,” he said in a phone-in with his Fox and Friends megaphone Tuesday morning. In another wild interview, Trump also bumped up the count of wars he has stopped to seven (from six that he claimed on Monday), including his claim (now made about 2-3 times a day) about halting the India-Pakistan conflict that in his view would otherwise have gone nuclear.Trump also offered a dodgy rationale for pressing Zelenskyy to sue for peace. “Russia is a powerful military nation… It’s a much bigger nation. It’s not a war that should have been started. You don’t take on a nation that’s 10x your size,” he said, even though by all accounts it is Russia that invaded Ukraine, albeit — according to Moscow — at western provocation. The US president’s remarks came after day-long talks in the White House with Zelenskyy and his European supporters during which they were implicitly told to forget about the 20 percent of Ukraine that Russia has captured and bringing Kiev into Nato. No one mentioned Ukraine’s loss of one-fifth of its territory as they focused on security guarantees against future Russian incursions, even as Trump put the onus of such a mission on Europe, with possible air support from the US. But as long as he is President, there will be no American troops on Ukrainian territory, Trump told Fox and Friends. While Zelensky and the European leaders profusely thanked Trump for his peace efforts, there was underlying skepticism about way forward. “The next steps ahead are the more complicated ones now,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told Trump during Monday’s summit, even as Russia said any peacekeeping efforts involving Nato troops are unacceptable. The MAGA supremo, who peeled off from the White House confabulations to phone Putin and get his okay for a bilateral meeting with Zelensky, now makes no secret for his liking for the Russian leader (“there was a warmth that cannot be hidden,” he said about the Alaska meeting), raising questions about the reasons for such affection. Some political analysts have gone so far as to wonder if the Kremlin has “kompromat” (compromising material) on Trump. “I used to be sceptical about claims that Putin had access to kompromat on Trump that explained his grovelling relationship with the Kremlin. But if such kompromat is not the explanation, it is hard to see why the White House is behaving as it does towards Ukraine,” the columnist Michael McDowell wrote. Commentators have also likened the Alaska and Washington 2025 meetings to Munich 1938 when concessions made to Nazi Germany enabled Hitler to secure Czechoslovakian fortifications leading to WW2, warning that allowing Russia to grab Ukraine’s key defensive lines could lead to a similar outcome.Trump’s isolationist MAGA supporters say such comparisons are nonsense, Ukraine’s war is not America’s war, and the defense of Ukraine and Europe cannot be at the expense of American blood and money. But former President Bill Clinton, among others, are arguing that it is America’s war because Washington (during his time) forced Ukraine to give up its nukes and pledged to protect it from an expansionist Russia. “I feel terrible about it…because I got them to give up nuclear weapons and none of them believe Russia would have pulled off this stunt if Ukraine had nuclear weapons,” he said, arguing for continued US and European support for Ukraine. From the MAGA corner: Trump is not obligated to keep commitments made by previous “corrupt” administrations.
