Acquisition of another 97 Tejas, 6 AEW&C aircraft gets CCS nod

New DELHI: India on Tuesday gave the final nod for acquisition of another 97 indigenous Tejas fighter jets and six advanced airborne early-warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft or “eyes in the sky”, collectively worth around Rs 85,500 crore, which will be crucial to tackle the collusive and ‘fused’ challenge from China-Pakistan in the years ahead. The PM-led cabinet committee on security (CCS) approved the Rs 66,500 crore deal for 97 “improved” Tejas Mark-1A fighters to be produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which will add to the 83 such single-engine light combat aircraft already ordered from defence PSU under a Rs 46,898 crore deal inked in Feb 2021, top sources told TOI.“The first two jets of the 83 ordered earlier are fully ready. The final weapons firing trials (including Astra air-to-air missiles) are slated for Sept. With the order for another 97 jets, HAL will be able to expand and stabilise its supply chains,” a source said.Faced with flak from IAF chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh for huge delays in deliveries, HAL has promised to progressively scale up production to 20 Tejas per year, and then to 24-30 per year, with the third production line now fully functional in Nashik to add to the two existing ones at Bengaluru, apart from private sector supply chains. The project for six AEW&C aircraft, which will entail mounting active electronically scanned array antenna-based radars, electronic and signal intelligence systems on second-hand Airbus-321 planes bought earlier from Air India, in turn, will cost Rs 19,000 crore. “All six AEW&C aircraft will be delivered by 2033-34,” the source said.Timely induction of the 180 Tejas Mark-1A fighters is needed to stem rapid depletion in the number of IAF fighter squadrons (each has 16-18 jets), which will go down to its lowest-ever figure of 29 squadrons next month after retirement of the 36 old MiG-21s still in service.IAF, incidentally, is authorised 42.5 combat squadrons. Pakistan now has 25 fighter squadrons, and is slated to get at least 40 J-35A fifth-generation stealth jets from China in the near future. China, of course, has more than four times the number of fighters, bombers and force-multipliers as compared to India. In the AEW&C arena, which are required to boost surveillance capabilities along the borders as well as help direct friendly fighters during air combat with enemy jets, India lags far behind even Pakistan. IAF currently has just three Netra AEW&C Mark-1 planes, with indigenous sensors mounted on Brazilian Embraer-145 jets for 240-degree radar coverage, and three Israeli ‘Phalcon’ radars mounted on Russian IL-76 aircraft. The new AEW&C project will involve the A-321 narrow-body aircraft first being “hardened and modified” in Spain and then being equipped with an antenna in the nose in addition to the main dorsal antenna to give 300-degree radar coverage. To make up numbers, defence ministry in March also accorded the initial “acceptance of necessity” to a separate project for six Netra Mark-1A on Embraer-145 jets, with more advanced technologies than the first three Mark-1 aircraft. On the Tejas front, IAF till now has got 38 of the first 40 Tejas Mark-1 fighters ordered for Rs 8,802 crore under two contracts inked in 2006 and 2010.

Former Panthers star urges Team Canada to add him with Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid in 4 Nations
Brandon Montour openly pitches to join Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid after Team Canada snub (The Canadian Press)

After celebrating the pinnacle of his NHL career by hoisting the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers in 2024, Brandon Montour has set his sights on another dream. This time, the prize isn’t a league trophy but the honor of wearing the Maple Leaf on the world’s biggest stage. Left out of the 4 Nations roster earlier this year, Montour is determined to fight his way into Team Canada’s lineup for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano.

Brandon Montour determined to earn spot alongside Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid on Team Canada

The NHL season hasn’t even begun, yet anticipation is already building around Olympic hockey. For Canadian players, the Games carry unmatched prestige. With a roster so stacked in every position, only the absolute elite secure their names on the team sheet. That reality fuels Brandon Montour’s hunger.Canada has already announced its first six names: Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon, Sam Reinhart, and Brayden Point. It’s a lineup that leaves little margin for others to break in, but Montour knows his window of opportunity lies in proving his worth on the ice.“I felt like I had the opportunity of making the 4 Nations team; unfortunately, it was not to be,” Montour told NHL.com. “At the same time, I think, for any hockey fan, it’s cool to kind of see the high end, you know, elite of the elite playing. It gives you the kind of thirst to feel like you could be a part of that.”That hunger is more than talk. Despite Seattle’s struggles last season, Montour showcased his consistency at the 2025 IIHF World Championship, tallying nine points. His performance didn’t go unnoticed, earning him a call-up to Team Canada’s Olympic orientation camp in Calgary this August.

Brandon Montour’s path to Milano 2026

At 31, Montour knows that opportunities to represent Canada at the Olympics don’t come often. The blueline competition will be fierce, but he has shown both resilience and growth in recent years. “It was nice to get that,” Montour admitted about the camp invite. “I think I played well at the Worlds and, I mean, I think at this point people know what I bring. But to be recognized, it’s very cool.”From the heartbreak of being left out to the thrill of a new chance, Brandon Montour’s Olympic chase is a story of grit. If his form continues, the Panthers’ Cup champion may yet skate alongside Crosby and McDavid under Canada’s banner in Milano. Also Read: Mark Scheifele calls Jonathan Toews’ Jets arrival “the perfect storm” as veteran sparks Winnipeg’s big hopes

Andy Roddick gave a strong and very honest reply after a social media troll questioned Iga Swiatek’s relevance. On Monday, August 18, 2025, the former United States tennis player reacted on his podcast Served with Andy Roddick after a fan commented under a joint Instagram post from Andy Roddick and Kim Clijsters. The post celebrated Iga Swiatek’s recent Cincinnati Open title. The troll wrote, “Does anyone really care about her?” and the podcast quickly answered with one direct word: “Yes.” The reply surprised many tennis followers.

Andy Roddick uses one word to defend Iga Swiatek after Cincinnati Open victory

On Sunday, August 17, 2025, Andy Roddick and Kim Clijsters’ joint Instagram post went online. It showed Iga Swiatek raising the Cincinnati Open trophy following a 7-5, 6-4 final victory against Jasmine Paolini at Cincinnati, Ohio. Earlier in the tournament, Iga Swiatek defeated Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals and did not drop a single set across the competition. One user tried to downplay her success shortly after the post was posted by questioning if anyone really cares about Iga Swiatek any longer. Andy Roddick responded with a simple one-word answer, “Yes.” Tennis fans quickly noticed the comment and praised Andy Roddick for respecting Iga Swiatek’s talent. The 24-year-old Polish star now has 24 career titles and has returned to World No. 2 in the latest WTA rankings. Her Cincinnati victory also marked her eleventh WTA 1000 title, putting her behind only Serena Williams, who holds thirteen. The Cincinnati title came just a month after Iga Swiatek won her first Wimbledon title in London.

This is not the first time Andy Roddick has publicly supported Iga Swiatek. In May 2025, during an episode of his Served with Andy Roddick podcast, he defended her against negative coverage from the Polish media following her 2024 doping situation. Later confirmation of the positive test came from contaminated melatonin, and she received a one-month suspension without fault found. Following the Cincinnati Open, Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz went to New York to get ready for the mixed doubles competition at the 2025 US Open.

Now, flood of severed limbs spooks Chasoti
Chasoti (Kishtwar) Flash Floods

CHASOTI (KISHTWAR): Almost as many severed limbs as intact bodies have been recovered in Chasoti in the past two days after the flash floods, leaving villagers and doctors at Atholi sub-district hospital, 30km downhill from the affected area, shaken. On Monday, one intact body and a severed leg were retrieved. On Tuesday, four more bodies and two severed feet arrived, taking the confirmed death toll to 68. With 72 still missing and no survivors found after the first two days, doctors and villagers said the tragedy has already claimed “at least 140 lives”, though they believe the final toll could climb higher.“We safely say that we are past 140, but in reality this number means nothing,” Dr Rakesh Kotwal told TOI. “The way things are, the toll will not stop here.”The first sense of what had happened reached Atholi at about 1.15pm on Aug 14, when Kotwal received a call from his colleague Dr Devendra Kumar, who was stationed in Chasoti. “It’s all over, all over, all over. The langar is gone,” Sharma repeated. He told Kotwal there had been 350- 400 people at the langar when the flood struck, and named several locals who were later confirmed dead.Kotwal added that about 100 people were on the narrow bridge across the stream at the time, crossing from both directions. “We can account for about 14 locals,” Kotwal said, “but there is no way of knowing how many others were there. There were pilgrims from other districts, labourers from UP, Bihar and Jharkhand who had come to Kishtwar for work but joined the yatra, and vendors selling pooja items and offering massages. Some even come from Nepal. None of them are on any list.”In Atholi, the numbers are kept by Naseer Ahmed, an accountant at the hospital who has been recording the bodies and parts brought in. He scoffs at the official figures. “The authorities never knew how many people were really there,” he said. “To say 140 is the toll is laughable.”Doctors and locals insist that those still missing should already be counted as dead. “The last injured person came here on Aug 16,” said Dr Showkat, a surgeon at the hospital, where bodies are wrapped in bags and put into ambulances to be taken to Govt Medical College and Hospital, Jammu. “Since then, we have received only bodies and body parts. There is no possibility of survivors now. The missing are gone.”On Tuesday, the sun broke through for the first time since the flood. As the waters receded, more bodies began to surface. But with them came no hope — only confirmation that the missing were dead. Both Showkat and Kotwal admitted that finding an intact body now feels like a form of relief. “When a complete body comes in, at least a family can take their relative home, perform rites and find closure,” Showkat said. “But when it is only a leg or a foot, we have to keep it separately, record it as a casualty, and wait for DNA. Until then, it is an orphaned piece of information.”Limbs and torsos are being catalogued and sent to Jammu, where DNA samples from families will be stored and matched. “Right now, even a severed limb is treated as a separate dead person, because it cannot be matched,” Naseer Ahmed said.In Chasoti, villagers spoke of waiting not for loved ones alive but for whatever fragments might be found. Abdul Majid, 54, whose nephew is among the missing, said simply: “A hand is someone’s son, a foot is someone’s father. We wait for parts in bags now.”Shiv Kumar, 38, lost his sister and her two children. Only her torso has been recovered. “We lit the pyre for what we had, but the mourning does not end,” he said. “We still wait for her children.”Some have not even had that much. Shabnam Begum, 29, who lost her husband and father-in-law, said she no longer goes to the riverbank. “In the first days I stood there, thinking someone alive might still come out. Now I know it is only limbs, only pieces. I cannot watch anymore.”Rescue teams from SDRF, NDRF, the Army and police continue their operations, but even they admit there is nothing left to rescue. Inspector Manoj Kumar of NDRF said, “We are not looking for survivors anymore. We are only recovering the dead.” Sub-inspector Altaf Hussain of the SDRF, who has been ferrying remains from Chasoti to Atholi, added: “Every intact body we find feels like a mercy. Families can claim them whole. But most of the time, it is just parts.”

Doda admin limits Kailash Kund Yatra due to rough weather, cloudburst tragedies

NEW DELHI: Citing safety concerns amid ongoing inclement weather in J&K and two back-to-back cloudburst tragedies in Kishtwar and Kathua districts, the Doda district administration has curtailed the three-day Kailash Kund Yatra in Bhaderwah from Aug 20-22 to only symbolic rituals this year.Kailash Kund Yatra is considered one of the toughest treks, wherein pilgrims cover an 18km steep uphill journey in the Kailash mountain range to reach a temple dedicated to the serpent deity, Vasuki Nag, and take a dip in the ice-cold Kailash Kund to seek blessings. A ceremonial procession of Chhari (mace) is an integral part of the pilgrimage.“Chhari Mubarak will accompany the prescribed group of yatris for a symbolic Kailash Kund Yatra, ensuring rituals are performed. Women and children are not permitted to participate this year due to safety concerns. Every pilgrim must carry a valid ID card issued by the district administration,” Doda deputy commissioner Harvinder Singh said.Singh said the Chattergala route was off-limits for pilgrims due to unsafe terrain and large nallahs. “The Yatra will proceed only via the traditional routes of Sungli, Nalthi, and Drafda (Bhalla) in Bhaderwah,” he added.Stressing that the safety of devotees was govt’s top priority, Singh assured that the administration, police, health, and disaster management teams would extend all possible assistance. He urged pilgrims not to try to join the yatra and recommended that they adhere to the advisory. At least 64 people have so far died in a catastrophic cloudburst-triggered flash flood that hit Kishtwar’s Chasoti, the last village on the Machhail Mata pilgrimage trail last week. Hundreds of devotees had been camping in the village, most on their return journey, when tragedy struck on Aug 14.Three days later, flash floods and landslides following a cloudburst and torrential rains killed seven people, including five minors, in Kathua’s Rajbagh-Ghati area on Aug 17.

LONDON: A pandit raised in India has become the Royal Navy’s first ever Hindu chaplain.Bhanu Attri (39), who grew up in Himachal Pradesh but now lives in Essex, formally passed out of Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth last week and is also the Royal Navy’s first non-Christian chaplain. He was one of two chaplains and 148 new Royal Navy officers to pass out.Chaplains offer religious, pastoral, welfare and moral support to any member of the naval service, regardless of faith, who need it either at a base, or on ships and submarines. Attri, a Hindu priest with decades of experience running a Hindu temple in London, will also offer Hindu prayer ceremonies for Hindus. There are around 40 Hindu personnel serving full-time in the Royal Navy, plus another 30 in the Maritime Reserves. In the UK military, as a whole, there are more than 1,550 Hindus serving full-time, mostly in the army.Whilst most cadets underwent 29 weeks of training, he underwent a slightly different 13-week course: six weeks of officer instruction, which included learning about the Royal Navy’s worldwide role, its present-day mission, and how to survive a sinking ship; four weeks at sea, and three weeks focused on the role of a military chaplain.Bhanu will now join the chaplaincy at HMS Drake, serving the thousands of personnel working in and around Devonport Naval Base, ashore and at sea.“Passing out from Britannia Royal Naval College to become the first ever Hindu chaplain in the fleet is a profound honour,” Attri said. “The chance to represent individuals from other diverse religions brings meaningful representation for the Hindu community and reflects the Navy’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and spiritual care for all. My family feels immense pride.”Anil Bhanot, Hindu adviser to the ministry of defence (MoD), said: “In 2023 the Royal Navy created a position for a Hindu chaplain and I endorsed Pandit Bhanu Prakash Attri for best fitting the criteria. He has qualifications from India equivalent to a Sanskrit scriptural postgraduate degree.” Bhanot said he wanted to encourage more Hindu youth to join the British armed forces.“Although our spiritual Bhoomi is India, our Karma-Bhoomi is the UK and MoD represents our protective arm,” he said.
