Indian student arrivals to US crash 46% in July: Here’s how it could cost American students
Indian student visa crash hits US university finances hard. (AI Image)

Indian students are vanishing from America’s campuses—and it’s not just a blip. In July 2025, student visa arrivals to the US dropped 28% year-on-year to just under 79,000, marking the steepest monthly fall so far this year, according to the International Trade Administration (via Bloomberg). But the real gut punch lies in the breakdown: Arrivals from India fell a staggering 46%, while China, once the dominant source of foreign students, declined by 26%. When your top two source countries both head for the exits, the alarm bells aren’t just ringing—they’re blaring through every admissions and finance office from Boston to Berkeley. And the implications go far beyond lecture halls. An analysis of SEVIS and State Department data by JB International and NAFSA predicts a 30–40% drop in new international student enrolment this fall. The hit? Nearly $7 billion in lost community spending and over 60,000 jobs—gone. For context, in 2024, international students contributed $46 billion to the US economy and supported nearly 400,000 jobs, suggests a report from The PIE News.Indian students—known for enrolling in high-cost STEM programs—have been the financial spine of many US universities, especially mid-tier private colleges that rely on full-tuition-paying internationals to stay afloat. But visa hurdles, backlogs, rising rejections, and hostile immigration rhetoric have turned an already complex process into a gamble many families aren’t willing to take anymore. What’s driving the decline? At the heart of the decline lies a cascade of administrative tightening and rising anxieties. The U.S. State Department—under the Trump administration—hit pause on all new student (F, M) and exchange (J) visa interview scheduling starting May 27, 2025, citing a need to build in new vetting protocols. This freeze came smack in the middle of the summer application crucible and immediately slowed the flow of hopefuls. Then, in mid‑June, interviews officially resumed—but with a catch: mandatory, intensified social‑media screening. Applicants were now required to make all their social‑media accounts public and consent to full examination of their digital trail—including posts, comments, associations, and even deleted content. In effect, a perfect storm was engineered: A visa‑pause when thousands apply, then a rollback coupled with a surveillance of digital lives. For Indian students—many applying for high‑stakes STEM programs—this came during the apex of the admissions season. The result? Crippling uncertainty, cascading deferrals, and a mighty wedge in what had long been America’s most reliable recruitment funnel.International students: The quiet funders of their American classmatesFor years, American universities have quietly balanced their books using a financial sleight of hand: Offering steep tuition discounts to domestic students while charging international students full freight. The practice, long taken for granted, is now starting to crack.According to an annual study by the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), the average institutional tuition discount rate for first-time, full-time undergraduates at private nonprofit colleges reached a record 56.3% in the 2024–25 academic year. For all undergraduates receiving institutional aid, the average discount was 51.4%. In practical terms, that means for every $1 billed in tuition, colleges gave back 56 cents in institutional grant aid to incoming freshmen—netting just $22,000 on a $50,000 sticker price.By contrast, international students rarely receive such aid. They pay far closer to the listed price and, in doing so, have long subsidised the cost of education for their American classmates. When this full-pay segment starts to shrink—as current visa data from July 2025 suggests—the fallout is not gradual, it’s immediate. Fewer international students doesn’t just mean fewer bodies on campus; it means a sharp and sudden drop in revenue at precisely the moment institutions are running out of other financial cushions. The result? Fewer scholarships, slashed services, larger class sizes, and fewer course offerings—for American students. When foreign tuition dollars vanish, the subsidy model collapses—and it’s the locals who feel the cut first.TOI Education is on WhatsApp now. Follow us here.

Asia Cup 2025 | 'Open your mouth carefully': Jasprit Bumrah's critics lambasted
Jasprit Bumrah (File Photo)

Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif has welcomed Jasprit bumrah’s return to T20I cricket following his recent performance in England. Kaif defended Bumrah against critics who questioned his fitness during the fourth Manchester Test.Bumrah is set to return to T20I cricket after spending over a year focusing on Test cricket, including tours to Australia and England. He claimed 32 wickets in Australia and took 14 wickets with two five-wicket hauls in England. However, his struggles with the new ball and fitness concerns in Manchester raised questions about his workload and Asia Cup participation.Kaif addressed critics who linked India’s Test losses in England to Bumrah’s presence in the team.“Open your mouth carefully because you mentioned that whatever matches we played in England, we lost when he played. You better look at how many matches he has played and India won them, go and find out that as well, regardless of the format. When he plays, how many times does he give match-winning performances? Go and find that stat as well. Bumrah is a promising diamond of India. You do not report him. There are no stains on him,” Kaif said.

He will bowl 28 overs (four overs per match), and I am speaking about a two or three-week-long tournament. There is no problem in bowling 28 overs; he will get time to recover. You can rest him in one odd match against Oman or weaker teams. After workload management and a break, he will be used. I think he would not face any issues in bowling four overs. You need Bumrah in T20 because he can change the course of the game with his bowling.”Kaif expressed disappointment over Mohammed Siraj’s exclusion from the team. Siraj was the leading wicket-taker during the England tour with 23 wickets in five matches.“There is no Mohammed Siraj as well, and he will be missed because of the form he was in, the way he bowled in England, bowled longer spells in each game. By bowling that much, you have the bowling form. He plays IPL and picked up wickets as well. If you see, he is bowling exceedingly well in the first 10-12 matches. So, I am surprised he was not in the 20-member side,” he added. “I am disappointed because he finished the series 2-2 on his own. We know how well he bowled, and when you have the form, you want to back that bowler, and that is why I am disappointed not to see him in the Asia Cup. He is an equally brilliant bowler even in white-ball cricket.”Siraj’s recent performance includes taking 16 wickets in 15 matches for Gujarat Titans during IPL 2025, with best figures of 4/17. In T20Is for India, he has claimed 14 wickets in 16 matches, with his last appearance against Sri Lanka in July last year.India’s Asia Cup campaign begins against UAE on September 10, followed by a match against Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai. Their final group stage match against Oman is scheduled for September 19 in Abu Dhabi. The tournament’s Super 4 stage will include the top two teams from each group. If India tops Group A, all their Super 4 matches will be in Dubai. A second-place finish would mean one match in Abu Dhabi and two in Dubai. The Super 4 stage runs from September 20 to 26, with the final scheduled for September 28 in Dubai.

Online Gaming Bill 2025: Promotion of innovation and security of citizens, passed in Lok Sabha

Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said on Wednesday that the online game related to money has become a serious social and public health problem and its negative impact on society is clearly visible. Vaishnav on Wednesday, after passing the bill banning the online game played with money in the Lok Sabha, said that the proposed law would promote e-sport and social gaming and would make India the center of development of such games.

The Lok Sabha has passed the online gaming enrichment and regulation Bill, which provides facilities to operate the online game, sports facilities and advertisements to be played with money. The government is taking steps to curb the incidents of increasing addiction, money refinement and financial fraud through such an app.

Vaishnav said, “Our effort is to promote e-sports and social gaming, online social gaming and we want India to become a center of gaming development. Many efforts are already being made for this.”

The minister said that as far as digital technology is concerned, online gaming has emerged as a ‘major area’ with three main areas.

He said, “Two sectors, e-sports and online social gaming are good for society. We are promoting two out of three sectors … These two will get legal recognition and promote. The bill will form an authority that will basically make programs and plans that promote e-Sports and online social gaming.”

The minister said that the third sector is the online game related to money, which is harming the society and has emerged as a major social and public health problem.

Vaishnav said, “Even the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified a new disease ‘gaming disorder’ on the addiction to playing online games and its side effects, which causes anxiety, depression, sleep problem, social separation and stress.”

The minister said, “It causes psychological crisis and serious disruption in family and social life. We have seen that the middle class families have lost their entire life savings due to the addiction of the online game played with money. Cases of suicide have also come up. ”

What is in the bill?

The bill said that companies and their officers would be responsible if they were found running wrong gaming platforms. But the directors who do not have a hand in it will not be punished. The government and regulatory agencies will strictly investigate and implement the law.

Where is former Vice President Dhankhar hidden, why are you silent: Rahul Gandhi

After the resignation of former Congress vice -president Jagdeep Dhankhar, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday questioned where he is “missing” and “completely silent”. Speaking at a function organized in honor of the opposition’s joint vice -presidential candidate B Sudarshan Reddy, Gandhi said that there is a story behind leaving the post of Dhankhar and surprised why the former Vice President of India is in a situation where he cannot speak and hide.

Addressing the people present in the Central Hall of the Constitution House, Rahul said, “Where have the old Vice Presidents gone? Why are they hidden?” The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said that the day the Vice President resigned, KC Venugopal came to him and said that the Vice President has “gone.”

He said, “There is a big story of his resignation. Some of you would know it, do not know anything. But there is a story behind it.”

He said, “And then there is a story why he is hidden. Why the Vice President of India is in such a situation that he cannot even speak a word and he is hiding … Everyone knows this.”

Gandhi said, “Suddenly, the person who used to ‘spoke’ in the Rajya Sabha, is silent, completely silent. Therefore, we are living in a similar phase.”

Later, in a post on X, the Congress leader said, “Why are the former Vice President of India hiding? Why is such a situation arising that they cannot come forward and speak a word? Think, in which era we are living.”

Suddenly surprising everyone, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President on 21 July on the first day of the onset of the monsoon session of Parliament. Meanwhile, there were indications that his deteriorating relationship with the ruling party would have forced him to step down.

Indian cricket | 'When he steps away ...': Ex-India batter predicts Rohit Sharma's ODI retirement and successor

“In the last three years, Gill has scored 2,000 runs. He is the future captain. He is the Test captain, and in T20Is, he is the vice-captain. Rohit is the ODI captain. Gill’s steady rise in the leadership ladder has indeed been remarkable. After Rohit’s final Test series in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the young opener was handed the captaincy reins and guided India to a 2-2 draw in a challenging away series in England, amassing 754 runs with the bat. His IPL consistency and calm presence have further bolstered his credentials.Appointed as vice-captain to Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is, Gill has been recalled to the format for the upcoming Asia Cup after focusing primarily on ODIs and Tests. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that Gill’s maturity and form made him an obvious choice for leadership grooming.“We obviously see some leadership qualities in him. And his form in England was what we were hoping for. He exceeded all our expectations with the kind of form that he showed with his bat, which is a great sign when there is so much pressure on you as a captain,” Agarkar had said after announcing the Asia Cup squad. In T20Is, Gill has played 21 matches, scoring 578 runs at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate of 139.27, including a century and three fifties.

On Monday, August 19, 2025, on his podcast, ESPN host Stephen A. Smith said that Donald Trump did not start the Russia-Ukraine war. He said it’s wrong to blame Mr. Trump. He pointed out that the war started while Joe Biden was president, and that earlier actions by Barack Obama and Bill Clinton made things worse. He spoke clearly and strongly. This is the most important news right up front.

Stephen A. Smith defends Donald Trump, blames Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton for Russia-Ukraine war

Stephen A. Smith made these remarks on “The Stephen A. Smith Show” podcast on Monday, August 19, 2025, defending Donald Trump from claims that he caused the war.He said, “We ain’t gonna act like he caused this now. It’s Democrats in office” and added, “It was Biden in office when a full-fledged war against Ukraine took place, courtesy of Russia’s instigation, no matter what they try to say to Trump.”He also blamed Barack Obama, saying Russia invaded Crimea in 2014 during the Obama administration, and that helped fuel the current war. Then he mentioned Bill Clinton, noting that in 1994, under President Clinton, Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons and became dependent on the United States.Stephen A. Smith stressed that promises should be kept. He said, even if people don’t like spending money to defend Ukraine“promises made are supposed to be promises kept. We promised them this! … You owe it to the Ukraine, Ukrainians.”Also Read: Antonio Brown Drops Explosive Epstein Remark On Donald Trump And Vladimir Putin At Alaska Pursuing Peace Summit

Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton decisions linked to Ukraine conflict, Stephen A. Smith argues

The ESPN host then brought up Bill Clinton’s role in the 1990s. In 1994, Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons under an agreement that President Clinton supported. Ukraine did this in exchange for promises of security. Smith argued that this left Ukraine weaker and too dependent on help from other nations. He said that today’s war shows the danger of that deal, because now Ukraine must rely heavily on outside support. “It was Clinton in office when you made a deal that disarmed Ukraine, and therefore weakened them, leaving them dependent on the United States,” he said.Stephen A. Smith added that even though he does not like the idea of U.S. taxpayers paying billions of dollars for Ukraine, promises made should still be promises kept. He ended by saying that Ukraine’s sovereignty was under attack and that the people of Ukraine should not be treated as the villains in the conflict.

SUBSCRIBE NOW!The match officials expressed concerns about the legality of Subrayen’s action in their post-match report, prompting the ICC’s standard protocol. The 31-year-old will now undergo an Independent Assessment at an ICC-accredited testing facility, where his action will be scrutinised.

Poll

Will South Africa win the ODI series against Australia?

The development came on what was otherwise a memorable day for Subrayen. Making his 50-over debut, he bowled a full quota of ten overs and dismissed the dangerous Travis Head, who was stumped after a failed attempt to charge down the track. Subrayen had earlier made his Test debut against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo this year, where he impressed by taking four wickets in the first innings. His report is a blow to South Africa’s balance, particularly with Kagiso Rabada already sidelined through injury for the three-match series. The Proteas, who edged out Australia in the series opener, are aiming to build on their momentum after narrowly losing the preceding T20I series 1-2.The series now moves to Mackay for the second and third ODIs on August 22 and 24. But with Subrayen’s availability under a cloud, the visitors face an untimely disruption. How the Proteas adjust their spin options could be decisive in maintaining their early advantage against the hosts.

Gold Rate Today: Gold came close to one lakh, continuously falls gold, know reasons

Gold Rate Today: The price of gold fell by Rs 400 to Rs 1,00,020 per 10 grams in the bullion market in the national capital Delhi on Wednesday due to the frequent selling of stockists. The All India Bullion Association gave this information. In the last trading session, the price of gold with 99.9 percent purity was closed at Rs 1,00,420 per 10 grams.

In the local market, gold with 99.5 percent purity fell by Rs 350 to Rs 99,700 per 10 grams on Wednesday. On Tuesday, it closed at Rs 1,00,050 per 10 grams. Senior Expert Saumil Gandhi of HDFC Securities said that gold prices continued to fall on Wednesday. The reason for this is to reach a week’s highest level with a slight gain of the US dollar. At the same time, the expectation of low-political risks has also been affected after the positive results of the meetings with Vladimir Putin of President Donald Trump, Volodimir Jailonsky and European leaders.

He said that this has hoped for a possible solution to the struggle, which has been the main reason for the fall in gold prices in recent times. Apart from this, silver prices fell by Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,12,500 per kg on Wednesday. Silver closed at Rs 1,14,000 per kg on Tuesday. Gold, spotted in foreign markets, stood at $ 3,326.04 an ounce.

Motilal Oswal Financial Services Expert Manav Modi said that gold prices came to their lowest level of about three weeks due to the strengthening of the dollar, while investors are waiting for the address of the US Federal Reserve chief Jerom Powell at the Jackson Hall Seminar on Friday.

He said that in the meantime, the US Dollar Index reached the highest level of more than a week and broke the dollar to 87 levels, further pressure on domestic prices. However, silver in global markets fell by about one percent to $ 37.07 an ounce. Modi said that investors will monitor the details of the Federal Reserve meeting. It will be released today. This is expected to get more information about the central bank’s monetary policy and the direction of bullion prices.

Gold in Indore, softening in silver prices

In the bullion market of Indore, gold decreased by Rs 50 per 10 grams and silver by Rs 2,100 per kg on Wednesday.

'If West criticises, you are doing right..’: Russia slams Trump’s 25% penal tariffs on India - 10 hard-hitting statements for reality check to US
Russia said, “If Indian goods are facing difficulties entering the US market, the Russian market is welcoming”. (AI image)

Russia has hit out strongly at the Donald trump administration for its mounting pressure on India to stop purchases of Russian crude oil. Calling US’s secondary tariffs ‘unjustifed’ and ‘unlawful’, Russia stressed that there would be no disruption in its oil supply to India. The Russian Embassy’s Charge d’Affaires in New Delhi, Roman Babushkin, conducted a press briefing on Wednesday regarding bilateral relations and US tariffs on India for its Russian oil purchases. The briefing also saw Evgeny Griva, Russia’s Deputy Trade Representative in India make strong statements about India-Russia trade and negotiations on crude oil discounts for India.During the briefing, Babushkin not only criticised the US President Donald Trump’s 25% additional tariffs on India, but also slammed America for not ‘behaving’ like a friend to India. He also spoke of Russian markets being open to Indian goods. Also Read | ‘They are just profiteering…’: Trump administration fires fresh salvo on India for Russia crude trade; ‘…made $16 billion in excess profits’We take a look at ten hard-hitting statements Russian officials made on US tariffs, oil trade with India & more:

Oil issues: ‘Unjustified pressure’ from neocolonial powers

Roman Babushkin slammed the US pressure on India to stop buying Russian crude, saying that it is not in the nature of the West to show equal cooperation. “Russia is the largest producer of oil and India is the largest consumer. Any kind of unilateral action leads to disruptions in supply chains, imbalance in pricing policies and destabilisation of global markets, endangering the energy security of developing countries,” he said. “Hypothetically, if India refuses Russian oil, it will not lead to equal cooperation with the West in general because it is not in the Western nature, which was clearly demonstrated in recent years. They behave like neocolonial powers that think of their own benefit. This pressure is unjustified and unilateral,” Babushkin added.

‘Indian goods welcome in Russia…’

In a clear statement on trade dynamics, Babushkin said that if India faced export restrictions to the US due to its 50% tariffs, the goods could flow to Russian markets. He said, “If Indian goods are facing difficulties entering the US market, the Russian market is welcoming Indian exports.”

‘Special mechanism’ to continue oil supplies to India

Babushkin said that Russia maintains a “special mechanism” to address any potential consequences if the US imposes sanctions on India regarding its Russian oil purchases.Addressing concerns over US tariff threats on India’s Russian oil imports, Evgeny Griva, Russia’s Deputy Trade Representative in India, emphasised the vital nature of Russian oil supplies to India.“Definitely, there are some imposition how to supply crude oil. And now we couldn’t discuss it because it’s really a very special mechanism. But only one thing is absolutely clear: that the percentage which Russia provides, approximately 40%, is very important; it’s a crucial share for the Indian economy and it means that the situation practically couldn’t be changed,” Griva explained. Also Read | Trump’s 50% tariffs loom: What steps is government looking at to cushion impact on key export sectors? Russia’s discounted crude for India

Griva verified ongoing talks on discounted crude oil for India, saying, “There will be around a 5% discount on Russian crude for India, subject to commercial discussions.”The Russian official assured that India’s crude purchases from Russia would continue unaffected by international political tensions. Whilst specific pricing information remains private, he indicated that standard discounts hover near 5%, varying based on market-based negotiations.

US tariffs on India for crude oil trade ‘unlawful’

Babushkin issued a strong rebuke regarding the US decision to impose ‘sanctions’ on India. He emphasised that such punitive measures demonstrate disregard for national sovereignty and absence of trust. He additionally said that if the US considered its relation with India as genuine friendship it would not ‘behave like that’.“As we all know, the sanctions are a tool of unlawful competition. It’s always about double standards. A lack of trust, blackmail and pressure, as well as disrespect of national interests. Friends don’t behave like that,” Babushkin said.

BRICS doesn’t impose sanctions

“You will never see sanctions imposed by Russia or within BRICS organisations where we together participate,” Babushkin said.“Non-United Nations sanctions and secondary sanctions are illegal. They weaponise the economy. Despite the tremendous sanction pressure on Russia, the Russian economy is growing steadily. It means that you cannot exclude from the global economy such a big and important country like Russia with its tremendous energy, industrial and human potential..”

Rupee-rouble trade to grow

Griva noted the strengthening financial collaboration between India and Russia, particularly in Rupee-Ruble transactions. He emphasised that the financial cooperation remains secure, despite external pressures on the Russian economy and attempts at intimidation.Evgeniy Griva remarked, “We see that after such pressure, we see an increase in cooperation, and especially in the financial sphere, for example, because payments in ruble-rupee became safer when you can expect that there would be some blackmailing. So just the trend is that more pressure, more cooperation.”Also Read | ‘If Indian goods cannot go to US, they can head to…’: Russia slams ‘unjustified’ Trump sanctions on oil; Putin to meet PM Modi in India this year

India-Russia trade

“We have really very stable growth in our trade… Now we have reached the level and we can predict that, and focus on the usual growth in trade will be approximately 10% annually. Besides that, we see the tendency that now Indian exports towards Russia are growing bigger and faster”, Griva stated.

‘If the West criticises you…’

Babushkin dismissed concerns regarding potential secondary tariffs suggested by the US trade adviser if India continues its Russian oil purchases.“If the West criticises you, it means you are doing everything right…We don’t expect that to happen (India to stop buying oil from India). We know about the challenging circumstances for India. This is the true strategic partnership we are enjoying. Whatever happens, even during challenges, we are committed to removing any problems,” he said.

‘India matters a lot to Russia’

“The recent phone call by President Putin to PM Modi ji, explaining and sharing the information about recent developments in Ukraine, means India matters a lot to Russia. We are capable of finding any solution for mutual satisfaction. The deepening of our partnership will help us grow together,” he added. Also Read | ‘Stop buying Russian crude oil’: Trump adviser says India should ‘start acting’ as strategic partner of US; ‘…it’s cozying up to Russia, China’

'Road to nowhere': Russia's new demand on Ukraine; asks for a seat at security guarantee talks

Russia on Wednesday demanded to be a part of talks on Ukraine’s security guarantees as it continued to play down the US President Donald Trump’s hopes for a bilateral meet between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a lasting peace deal. It also demanded China to be one of the security guarantors of Ukraine, the Guardian reported.“To discuss security guarantees seriously without Russia is a road to nowhere,” Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said.In 1994, Moscow joined the Budapest Memorandum, pledging security guarantees to Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan in return for their surrender of the Soviet-era nuclear arsenals left on their territory. However, Russia broke that commitment, first with the annexation of Crimea in 2014, and later with its full-scale invasion in 2022, which has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.US President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House on Monday, just days after his high-profile meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Trump, a vocal critic of US aid to Ukraine, said European nations were prepared to commit troops to secure a settlement, while ruling out American boots on the ground and instead suggesting possible US air support. He also claimed Putin had agreed to meet Zelenskyy and accept limited Western security guarantees for Ukraine, though Moscow has yet to confirm this. Russia, meanwhile, dismissed the White House talks as a “clumsy” effort to shift Trump’s stance on the war. Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov stressed that Moscow would never accept Western troops in Ukraine and cast doubt on the likelihood of a near-term Putin-Zelenskyy summit. He warned that any such meeting would need careful preparation to avoid worsening the already volatile conflict.
