A sudden fire broke out in a slum at the Tajpur Road dump site in the Punjab city of Ludhiana on the night of 15 April. Due to the fire, 7 people sleeping in the slum were burnt alive and died. The deceased were identified as Suresh (55), his wife Rona Rani (50) and their children Rakhi (15), Manisha (10), Chandni (5), Geeta (6) and Sunny (2).

Following this incident, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore on the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation and directed the Municipal Corporation to deposit this amount with the District Magistrate for one month. A separate account will be created for the amount deposited by the corporation, which will be monitored by the committee.

Most of the dead were from the family of rag pickers, who had been living near the dump site (Dheron) for the last ten years.

Let us tell you that after this matter, the NGT team also visited the incident site. Even during that checking, smoke was smoldering in many places in the garbage heaps. After this, the NGT team of corporation officials also organized a class. In the order passed on July 25, the tribunal said that if the corporation is unable to deposit the amount, it should approach the state government.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said in the order that in view of the possibility of death of seven people due to fire at the dump site, the municipal corporation is liable to pay compensation to them. This amount will have to be deposited with the District Magistrate Ludhiana within a month.

The compensation is assessed at Rs 57.5 lakh. In which Rs 10 lakh has been fixed for persons above 50 years of age and Rs 7.5 lakh for each person below 20 years of age. On the other hand, the only surviving person (male) of the family should be paid Rs 1 lakh and the remaining amount should be kept in the form of FD, till the entire amount is disbursed, interest of Rs 5 lakh will continue to be paid every year. .

After this decision of NGT, there has been a stir in the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation. It is being told that today the officers can meet the local body minister Nijjar regarding this matter. According to the information, the NGT team can do a surprise inspection of the dumping site again any day in the coming days.
