The incident took place at Veerampalem village of Tadepalligudem block at around 4am, they said. Police have identified the deceased as Ganji Nirmala.

“We have arrested her husband Ganji Daveedu, who slit his wife’s throat, broke her head and chopped off her limbs in the most brutal manner. We have booked a case of murder under Section 302 of IPC (Indian Penal Code) and are investigating the case,” said Tadepalligudem deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Bandari Srinath.

According to the police, Daveedu is an alcohol addict and does not have any job which is the reason for frequent quarrels between the couple. “Last year, Nirmala left for Kuwait after finding a job there, leaving her three children– two daughters and a son with her parents,” the DSP said.

Police said that Daveedu tortured his children and put pressure on her to send money, in one incident, he made a video of him beating the children. Following the incident, on a complaint from Nirmala’s parents, Daveedu was arrested and jailed.

A couple of months ago, Nirmala returned from Kuwait and at the same time, Daveedu also came out of jail on bail. “He went to his in-law’s place and told them that he was a changed man. He promised that he would take care of his family well. Believing his words, Nirmala returned to Veerapalem along with her children on Thursday,” the DSP said.

However, the couple quarrelled again on Thursday night as Daveedu came home in a fully drunken condition. “In the early hours of Friday, when Nirmala was fast asleep, Daveedu hacked her with an axe and killed her,” the police official said.
