Election Commission Of India: Ec Warns Both Ncp Grps Not To Air Views On Proceedings | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The Election Commission of India on Wednesday warned both the Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) not to give their opinions and predictions over the ongoing proceedingsrelated to the party before the commission. The ECI is hearing a petition filed by deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar staking claim over the name and poll symbol of the NCP.
Sharad Pawar’s counsel Devdatta Kamat submitted to ECI media reports on interviews given by members of the Ajit Pawar faction. The Ajit Pawar faction too made a similar complaint, following which ECI warned both the factions.
Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the Sharad Pawar group, said there was a briefing on the daily proceedings, but opinion was never expressed. Singhvi reiterated that for 23 years, there was no dispute in the party, and internal elections were held as per the party constitution. Now suddenly Ajit Pawar and Praful Patel have moved the ECI, he said.
Singhvi claimed that in a democracy, the real test is on the basis of organizational strength of the party and not on the basis of number of elected representatives. “In my opinion, this cannot be the subject matter of challenge under the symbol order,” he said.
The NCP case has been adjourned to December 4.
