AHMEDABAD: After a year and a half of its scheduled launch, the India International Bullion Exchange (IIBX) is all set to be inaugurated this week on Friday by PM Narendra Modi.
IIBX is set to be operationalised this week at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), India’s maiden International Financial Services Centre.
Union Home Minister, Amit Shah along with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel would also be present along with other Union Ministers of State – Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary and Dr Bhagwat Kishanrao Karad.
PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone of the headquarters building of the IFSC Authority (IFSCA), the unified regulator for development and regulation of financial products, financial services and financial institutions in IFSCs in India.
IIBX will facilitate efficient price discovery with the assurance of responsible sourcing and quality, apart from giving impetus to the financialisation of gold in India. This shall empower India to gain its rightful place in the global bullion market and serve the global value chain with integrity and quality. This will also enable India to be able to influence global bullion prices as a principal consumer.
PM will also launch NSE IFSC-SGX Connect during his visit. As part of this, all orders on NIFTY derivatives placed by members of Singapore Exchange Limited (SGX) will be routed to and matched on the NSE-IFSC order matching and trading platform. This will deepen liquidity in derivative markets at GIFT-IFSC, bringing in more international participants and creating a positive impact on the financial ecosystem in the GIFT-IFSC.
Broker-Dealers from India and across international jurisdictions are expected to participate in large numbers for trading derivatives through the Connect.
After a year of trials and dry runs, a series of approvals, the country’s first India International Bullion Exchange (IIBX) is all set to be inaugurated. Pilot trading had already begun at the exchange with small transactions to test the actual trading activity at the centre over the past few months. The necessary approval is expected from the IFSCA as is learnt from sources. Some 56 qualified jewellers have already been onboarded to transact on the IIBX. The RBI guidelines enable qualified jewellers to import gold through (IIBX) or any other exchange approved by IFSCA and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
The exchange will have a total of three vaults: One which will be operated by Sequel is ready and has been approved, the second one to be operated by Brinks is ready and awaiting final approval whereas the third one is still under construction.
“Once gold will be imported, it will get vaulted at the IFSC Authority-approved vault. Following this, a bullion depository receipt will be made and the gold will be ready for trading,” said a source.

After lumpy skin disease, Gujarat government faces goat plague worries | Ahmedabad News

banner img
Representative purpose only

AHMEDABAD: After lumpy skin diseasea new worry stares at the state animal husbandry department – the high seroprevalence of one of the most contagious peste des petits ruminants (PPR) virus among small ruminant animals like sheep and goats of Saurashtra region. PPR is referred to as the sheep and goat plague. The Ahmedabad branch of the animal husbandry department along with researchers from Junagadh and Navsari agricultural universities had earlier collected serum samples from 828 unvaccinated and 423 vaccinated sheep and goats for PPR virus. Their results have showed high prevalence of the virus.
The researchers found high seroprevalence of PPR antibodies in 84% of unvaccinated sheep and goats in Bhavnagar district, while it was 96% in those animals that were vaccinated. Similarly, in Surendranagar district 73.6% of the unvaccinated animals had PPR antibodies, followed by Amreli which had 56% seroprevalence among animals tested for PPR. In Jamnagar and Rajkot, the seroprevalence was 32% and 27% respectively among unvaccinated animals. PPR is a highly contagious. Once the PPR turns into an outbreak it can infect up to 90% of an animal heard, and the disease kills anywhere up to 70% of infected animals.
The disease sees sudden onset of depression, fever, discharges from the eyes and nose, sores in the mouth, disturbed breathing and cough, foul-smelling diarrhoea, which ultimately leads to death of the ruminant animal. The PPR virus does not infect humans.
“Our clinical findings have confirmed the circulation of PPR virus among population of sheep and goats in the Saurashtra region. This may be due to intermixing of vaccinated and unvaccinated animals. A clear vaccination strategy for control of disease is required. The study showed varying antibody level in affected districts reflecting infection and vaccination profile of herds,” claims the animal husbandry department report on the PPR seroprevalence in Saurashtra region. Recently the Gujarat government has launched a massive vaccination programme for cattle against lumpy skin disease in Saurashtra and Kutch region. An emergency procurement for 2.4 lakh doses of goat pox vaccine was recently placed by animal husbandry department.

Gujarat: Villagers beat up man after tying him to tree for attacking schoolgirl; three booked | Ahmedabad News

PATAN(GUJARAT): A man was tied upside down from a tree and beaten up by some villagers for allegedly attacking a teenage girl in Gujarat‘s Patan district, with the police registering a case against three persons after a video of the incident surfaced on social media.
In the video, a man tied upside down from a tree is being slapped repeatedly by some persons while onlookers gathered at the spot, a police official said on Sunday.
The incident occurred at Children village in Saraswati taluka on July 22, and a First Information Report (FIR) was lodged under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 114 (abettor present when offence committed) of the Indian Penal Code, said inspector A M Chaudhary of Vagdod police station.
“On July 22, some schoolgirls were sitting in the village when a man attacked one of them, a 15-year-old student, with a sharp weapon without any provocation. The girl was injured in the attack,” the officer said, adding that the attacker was identified as Jivanji Thakor.
Some villagers nabbed Thakor (22) and decided to punish him before handing him to the police, Chaudhary said, adding that the police arrived and arrested Thakor.
An FIR was lodged against Thakor under section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon or means) and relevant provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the official said.
“Thakor claims he attacked the girl because he was upset that the students left the place after he approached them. He does not appear to be of unsound mind, but investigations are underway,” Chaudhary said.
The trio booked for thrashing Thakor is yet to be arrested, he said.
The girl is undergoing treatment at the civil hospital in Dharpur near Patan city.

A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his 21-year-old drug addict son, chopping his body parts and disposing them off at two places in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad city, police said on Sunday.

AHMEDABAD: A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his 21-year-old drug addict son, chopping his body parts and disposing them off at two places in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad city, police said on Sunday.
The accused, Nilesh Joshi, who was apprehended while fleeing to Nepal, was handed over to the crime branch on Saturday night, an official said.
A severed head, hands and legs were recovered from two places in the city on July 20 and 21, and it was found that they belonged to the same person, he said.
Based on technical and human intelligence, the crime branch officials zeroed in on Joshi as a suspect in the case, the official said.
Joshi had left Ahmedabad for Surat on a bus on July 22, and later boarded a train for Gorakhpur in his bid to escape to Nepal, he said.
The accused was detained by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Ganganagar railway station in Rajasthan on the basis of information shared by the crime branch, the official said.
During interrogation, Joshi revealed that he had killed his son Swayam who was addicted to drugs and alcohol, as he would get aggressive and quarrel with him all the time.
“On the morning of July 18, Swayam was high on drugs and was hurling abuses at his father for not giving him money. The victim also attacked his father with the wooden handle of a shovel. In the process, the accused kicked his son and hit his head with a stone six to seven times, killing him on the spot,” the official said.
The accused then bought an electric grinder and large plastic bags to dispose off the body. He chopped off the head, legs and hands, dividing them into six parts and then placed them in plastic bags, he said.
Joshi then carried the bags on a two-wheeler and threw them at two different places in the city, the official said.
The police are in the process of lodging an FIR under section 302 (murder) of the IPC against the accused, he added.

Love For Sanskrit Brings Thai, Iranian Students To Somnath | Ahmedabad News

AHMEDABAD: He loved Bollywood films and Indian songs as a child. On growing up, he got mesmerised by the rich Indian culture. But it was his fascination with India’s ancient and classical language which brought Farshad Salehzehi from Iran to the doorstep of Shree Somnath Sanskrit University in Saurashtra.
Ten months into his bachelor’s degree course, Farshad speaks fluent Hindi which he insists on speaking even as he says it took some massive perseverance to master Devnagri script to write the nearly 3,500 years old language.
“I could understand Sanskrit taught by professors at the university as it is quite similar to Avestan, the old Iranian language. But it was tough learning to write as I could not master Devnagri script. While my professors said they could allow me to write Sanskrit in English script, I realised I did not come far from home to take a short cut. I persevered and months later I fare very well,” says a happy Farshad. The 40-year-old says that he plans to do his masters and even doctorate in Sanskrit which would open his window to understanding at least three languages– Avestan, Greek and Latin– better.
The SSSU has, for the first time since its inception in 2005, rallied four students from abroad to study Sanskrit.
Two students are set to arrive from Bangladesh pending visa approvals while Ubonsiri sokri has arrived from Bangkok, Thailand to pursue her masters in Sanskrit.
Sokri says she is interested in learning Sanskrit as it is a systematic language. “I am interested in Sanskrit grammar. Even though it’s hard for me, I will work hard to learn this beautiful language,” says Sokri who has taken a fancy to Gujarati meals of roti-sabzi and the hot weather.
Lalit Patel, vice chancellor of SSSU, said that foreign students are increasingly applying for courses at the university. He said that the courses also include studies of Sanskrit grammar, history, astrology, Veda PuranVastushastra and more.
“We give personalized coaching to foreign students who demonstrate great passion to learn India’s ancient language and culture. They also learn Hindi to absorb the most,” Patel said. Kartik Pandya said two students from Bangladesh are expected to join the course shortly pending visa approval.

An additional surveillance network of 10,000 CCTV cameras will be installed across the state covering 51 towns, with sharp focus on the state’s entry and exit points with Rajasthan, MP, and Maharashtra. “AI-based video analytical tools will make it possible for us to track suspicious individuals and vehicles across various CCTV networks,” said a senior Gujarat Police official. The Trinetra centre will link 34 district-level command and control centres.
Speaking on Saturday at the inaugural function of smart policing projects, in Gandhinagar, Union home minister Amit Shah said: “In all, 96% of our police stations across India have been computerized and are linked.” He added: “Gujarat has been at the forefront of police modernization. I appeal to the government here that it is now necessary that cameras be installed at all places including railway stations, private societies, ports, and pilgrimage centres.” He said all feeds should be connected to the command and control centre.
“An Indian Cyber Coordination Centre has also been created. All advanced technologies have been purchased by the central government,” Shah said. “No state government needs to purchase this technology separately, as states can link to the Indian government’s servers.” Chief minister Bhupendra Patel said: “A state-wide rollout of body-worn cameras for Gujarat Police has improved our policing and helped gain citizens’ confidence.” Patel, Shah, and Gujarat’s minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi also flagged off the 80-vehicle anti-human trafficking squad on Saturday. “With the help of the CCTV network under the VISHWAS project, we have been able to solve 1,500 theft cases, 950 accident cases, and more than 700 other cases,” Sanghavi said.

AHMEDABAD: The state education department has decided to stop the system of centralized unit tests in government-run and grant-in-aid secondary and higher secondary schools.
The schools will now be allowed to conduct unit tests on their own. However, the department has allowed the private schools to choose between a centralized unit test system and conducting tests on their own. On Friday, the department had taken the similar decision for grant-in-aid and government-run primary schools.
Under the new system, schools will be provided a question bank using which they can draft unit test question papers and conduct tests on their own. Sources said that the education department has instructed the district primary education officers to convey this decision to schools.
Sources said that the decision was taken during a meeting held on Friday presided over by the state education minister Jitu Vaghani. Sources said that the decision has been taken keeping in mind the learning-oriented education suggested in the new education policy.
In the new system, the schools will draft 25 marks question papers selecting questions provided in the question bank. The first unit test for Class 9 to 12 students will be held in two one-hour sessions on July 27.

SURAT: Not that the the pandemic period only drove a wedge between couples, in a few cases it also worked silently as a shrink to unite warring partners.
But, while the sudden spike in marital disputes had been chronicled more zealously, the agencies dealing with such issues claim that the few cases that found the ‘lockdown’ a blessing to resolve disputes also need to celebrated.
One such couple, a diamond artisan from Bhavnagar and his wife from Surat city, decided to cast aside their differences and live together while the woman also withdrew her court case seeking maintenance.
Sunil Gadiya (27), a resident of Gariyadhar and Anita (24) (names changed) got married in 2012 in an arranged relationship. The couple also became parents of a son (6) and a daughter (4) in their 10-year-old conjugal life.
“The Gadiyas lived in a joint family with his parents. However, the woman came to live with her parents along with her children in Surat in December 2019 alleging nagging and torture by in-laws. In February, she filed a case for maintenance for herself and the children,” said Ashwin jogadiyaAnita’s lawyer.
Initially, Gadiya got prepared to face the court trial. But he had a change of heart around the beginning of 2021, almost after a year of separation and the first phase of Covid-19, and started making sincere efforts to strike a compromise with his wife.
“The husband approached the woman’s brother and expressed his willingness for compromise. Later, the family members discussed the matter and decided to unite the couple again,” Jogadiya told TOI.
The couple reached a compromise and both signed an agreement to live together securing rights of both of them in April 2021. The 15 months of separation and pandemic proved to be a blessing not only for the couple, but their children too who were spared from the trauma of a broken home.
In April 2021, Anita requested the court to put her case for maintenance on hold after the agreement.
“After living together for a few months, the couple has now decided to put a permanent stamp on their married life,” Jogadiya added.

Screen grabs of CCTV footage show the man struggle to get something heavy that was wrapped in cloth down a flight of stairs. He then loads it on the white scooter and drives away

AHMEDABAD: The murder mystery involving the gory discovery of a limbless torso on July 20 from Vasna and chopped legs found from outside a residential colony near Parimal Garden is on the verge of getting cracked, claimed city cops.
With the CCTV footage of a middle-aged man dragging a heavy bag and loading it on the footrest of his scooter emerging, sources in police department said that the crime appears to be the handiwork of a man who is suspected to have killed his son and adopted the gruesome method to hide the crime.
The top cops however remained tight-lipped over the possible arrest or detecting the crime till late Saturday night. Multiple teams of city crime branch and police stations were formed to track down the accused in the sensational crime.
Sources said that the needle of suspicion is on the man, a resident of a society on Bhudarpura Road, due to his disappearance from the day of the crime. The man’s son is also missing.
“The first breakthrough was finding CCTVs from near the crime scene that showed a two-wheeler which could have been used to dump the chopped. Registration number of the vehicle led a team to the society on Bhudaepura road. The house was locked.
CCTV from near the residence showed an elderly man bringing down a heavy package and putting it on his two-wheeler,” said a senior city police official. “Thus, it’s believed that the two events are connected, as the vehicles seen in both the cases are identical.”
The flat’s lock was broken by a relative who had come searching for the duo. The flat reportedly had blood stains, said sources. The man suspected to be involved in the case is a retired government employee, they added.
The current theory by investigators pointed at a possible violent struggle and murder of the youth after which his body parts including head, hands and legs might be chopped off and disposed of in different areas of the city to delay the identification of the victim.
“Vasna police have registered a case of murder, whereas Ellisbridge police have taken cognizance note of the discovery, believing it to be connected with the find from Vasna. DNA of the recovered body parts would be carried out to ascertain that they belong to the same body, and also match with the close relatives,” said an official.
“While head of the body is still missing, the suspect might also be questioned about the murder weapon and motive, which is still unclear.”
