Special court judge Nitiraj Singh Sisodia on Thursday convicted Kamal Kishore, Amar Singh, Nagendra Singh and Suresh Singh and Ravi Kumar Rajput for their involvement in rigging a 2013 police recruitment test

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh has sentenced five persons to seven years rigorous imprisonment in connection with the Vyapam scam. Special court judge Nitiraj Singh Sisodia on Thursday convicted Kamal Kishore, Amar Singh, Nagendra Singh and Suresh Singh and Ravi Kumar Rajput for their involvement in rigging a 2013 police recruitment test conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Vyavsayik Pareeksha Mandal, known popularly by its acronym ‘Vyapam’.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each, public prosecutor Manuji Upadhyay said in a statement, adding that 32 witnesses were examined along with 220 documents and items. As per the prosecution, Kamal, Amar, Nagendra and Suresh had hired people to write the MP police constable recruitment test in their place on April 7, 2013. Ravi Rajput wrote the recruitment test for Nagendra, said Upadhyay.

They were convicted under Indian Penal Code sections 419 (impersonation) 420 (cheating), 467 (transfer of valuable security) 468 (forged documents) and 471 (use of forged documents as genuine) as well as provisions of Madhya Pradesh Examination Recognition Act, CBI special prosecutor Satish Dinkar said. The Vyapam scam hit the headlines in 2013 after it was revealed several exams conducted by it were rigged in exchange for money.

In 2015, the Supreme Court transferred the probe to the CBI. The name of Vyapam was first changed to MP Professional Examination Board and then, in February this year, to MP Karmachari Chayan Aayog (Staff Selection Board).

Scientists Discover Massive "Ocean" Near Earth's Core

Scientists Discover Massive 'Ocean' Near Earth's Core

The transition zone’s high water content has far-reaching consequences (Representational Image)

Scientists have discovered a reservoir of water three times the volume of all the oceans beneath the Earth’s surface, according to an international study. The water has been found between the transition zone of the Earth’s upper and lower mantle. The research team analyzed a rate diamond formed 660 meters below the Earth’s surface using techniques including Raman spectroscopy and FTIR spectrometry, ANI reported.

The study confirmed something that for a long time it was just a theory, namely that ocean water accompanies subducting slabs and thus enters the transition zone. This means that our planet’s water cycle includes the Earth’s interior.

“These mineral transformations greatly hinder the movements of rock in the mantle,” explains Prof. Frank Brenker from the Institute for Geosciences at Goethe University in Frankfurt. For example, mantle plumes — rising columns of hot rock from the deep mantle — sometimes stop directly below the transition zone. The movement of mass in the opposite direction also comes to standstill.

Brenker says, “Subducting plates often have difficulty in breaking through the entire transition zone. So there is a whole graveyard of such plates in this zone underneath Europe.”

However, until now it was not known what the long-term effects of “sucking” material into the transition zone were on its geochemical composition and whether larger quantities of water existed there. Brenker explains: “The subducting slabs also carry deep-sea sediments piggyback into the Earth’s interior. These sediments can hold large quantities of water and CO2. But until now it was unclear just how much enters the transition zone in the form of more stable, hydrous minerals and carbonates — and it was therefore also unclear whether large quantities of water really are stored there.”

The prevailing conditions would certainly be conducive to that. The dense minerals wadsleyite and ringwoodite can (unlike the olivine at lesser depths) store large quantities of water- in fact so large that the transition zone would theoretically be able to absorb six times the amount of water in our oceans. “So we knew that the boundary layer has an enormous capacity for storing water,” Brenker says. “However, we didn’t know whether it actually did so.”

An international study in which the Frankfurt geoscientist was involved has now supplied the answer. The research team analysed a diamond from Botswana, Africa. It was formed at a depth of 660 kilometres, right at the interface between the transition zone and the lower mantle, where ringwoodite is the prevailing mineral. Diamonds from this region are very rare, even among the rare diamonds of super-deep origin, which account for only one per cent of diamonds. The analyses revealed that the stone contains numerous ringwoodite inclusions — which exhibit a high water content. Furthermore, the research group was able to determine the chemical composition of the stone. It was almost exactly the same as that of virtually every fragment of mantle rock found in basalts anywhere in the world. This showed that the diamond definitely came from a normal piece of the Earth’s mantle. “In this study, we have demonstrated that the transition zone is not a dry sponge, but holds considerable quantities of water,” Brenker says, adding: “This also brings us one step closer to Jules Verne’s idea of an ocean inside the Earth.” The difference is that there is no ocean down there, but hydrous rock which, according to Brenker, would neither feel wet nor drip water.

China withdraws anti-AUKUS resolution at IAEA due to lack of support | World News

China withdrew a draft resolution against the AUKUS alliance at the general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna on Friday after apprehending that the measure would not receive majority support, people familiar with the matter said.

India worked closely with many IAEA member states to ensure that the draft resolution, which argued that the AUKUS initiative violated the responsibilities of Australia, the UK and the US under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), did not get majority support

China clashed with the three countries in the AUKUS alliance at the UN nuclear watchdog over the plan to supply Australia with nuclear-powered submarines, capping a week in which Beijing repeatedly railed against the project that was unveiled last year.

The draft resolution opposed AUKUS for seeking to provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines, though these will be armed with conventional weapons. Besides arguing that the initiative violated the responsibilities of the three countries under the NPT, the draft resolution also criticised the IAEA’s role in this regard, the people said.

India took an “objective view” of the AUKUS initiative while recognising the soundness of the technical evaluation done by the IAEA. The Indian mission to the IAEA in Vienna worked closely with many IAEA member states in this regard, the people said.

“India’s considered role helped many smaller countries take a clear stand on the Chinese proposal,” one of the people cited above said. “India’s deft diplomacy was deeply appreciated by IAEA member states, particularly the AUKUS partners,” the person added.

After apprehending that the resolution would not get majority support, China withdrew it on Friday, the last day of the general conference of the IAEA that began on September 26.

Under the AUKUS alliance, Australia plans to acquire at least eight nuclear-powered submarines. The alliance has largely been seen as a response by the three countries to the increasingly aggressive and assertive behaviour of China across the Indo-Pacific. India has close defence and strategic ties with all three members of AUKUS.

“The AUKUS partnership involves the illegal transfer of nuclear weapon materials, making it essentially an act of nuclear proliferation,” China said in a position paper sent to IAEA members during this week’s quarterly meeting of the nuclear watchdog’s 35-nation Board of Governors.

The AUKUS partners and the IAEA say the NPT allows marine nuclear propulsion provided necessary arrangements are made with the IAEA.

China disagreed with this position, saying nuclear materials will be transferred to Australia rather than being produced by it. It argued the IAEA was overstepping its mandate and wanted an “inter-governmental” process to examine the issue at the IAEA.

Ambassador Wang Qun, China’s permanent representative to the UN in Vienna, said the AUKUS initiative would have a “serious negative impact” on international efforts to resolve the Korean Peninsula and Iranian nuclear issues.

The number of people arrested in connection with September 2021 haul of 2,988 kilograms of drugs worth Rs 21,000 crore from Mundra Port in Gujarat’s Kutch district has risen to 26

A man arrested from Delhi by the National Investigation Agency recently was on Friday remanded in the custody of the probe agency in connection with the 2021 Mundra Port drug haul case by a special court here. The court of special judge Subhada Baxi remanded Sushant Sarkar in NIA custody till October 7, though the probe agency had sought 20-day custody.

The number of people arrested in connection with September 2021 haul of 2,988 kilograms of drugs worth Rs 21,000 crore from Mundra Port in Gujarat’s Kutch district has risen to 26. In his submission before the court, Amit Nair, appearing for NIA, said Sarkar had imported heroin-loaded semi-processed talc from Afghanistan to a port in West Bengal in November 2020 and then sent it to a firm owned by Prince Sharma and promoted by Kabir Talwar, both of whom were arrested by NIA earlier.

Wanted Afghan national Najibullah Khalid played a role in this case, Nair said, adding that the consignment was kept in a warehouse in Delhi and a sample from it was found to be heroin. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had seized 2988.21 kilograms of heroin from Mundra Port on September 13 2021. The consignment, concealed as semi-processed talc, was exported from Kandahar in Afghanistan through the Bandar Abbas Port of Iran.

The case probe was handed over to the NIA, which found a similar consignment was shipped in June 2021 through Mundra port involving the same supplier and receiver. The two offences were connected and are being investigated together. The NIA had recently filed a charge sheet against 16 people, including 11 Afghan nationals and an Iranian citizen, six of whom are shown as wanted. They have been charged under the Indian Penal Code, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

‘The plunder of India’: Putin slams West as Russia annexes Ukraine's 4 regions | World News

President Vladimir Putin on Friday cited India’s example while accusing the West of provoking colour revolution in any country for geopolitical gains, alleging that the West wanted to make Russia a “colony”.

“The West … began its colonial policy back in the Middle Ages, and then followed the slave trade, the genocide of Indian tribes in America, the plunder of India, of Africa, the wars of England and France against China … What they did was hooking entire nations on drugs, deliberately exterminate entire ethnic groups,” said Putin in the St George’s Hall at a Kremlin ceremony, news agency Reuters reported.

At a grand ceremony, Putin formally announced the annexation of Ukraine’s four regions – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia and claimed that “this is the will of millions of people”.

“For the sake of land and resources, they (the West) hunted people like animals. This is contrary to the very nature of man, truth, freedom and justice,” news agency ANI quoted Putin as saying.

Putin said that the West stands ready to provoke revolution in any country. “Following their goals, our geopolitical opponents – our opponents as we called them until quite recently – are prepared to put anyone, any country, in the line of fire; to turn it into the epicentre of a crisis; to provoke a “colour revolution” and unleash a bloodbath,” Reuters added.

“We have seen all this on more than one occasion. We also know that the West works on scenarios to stir up new conflicts in the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) area. But we have enough of them as it is. You need but look at what’s happening now between Russia and Ukraine, what’s happening on the borders of some other CIS countries,” he added.

Putin said the residents in the four annexed regions will now be Russia’s “citizens forever”.While denying seeking revival of the Soviet Union by the said annexation, Putin accused Western states – which have imposed sweeping sanctions on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.

Moreover, in a strong statement, Putin also added that Russia would now defend its new territory “with all the means at its disposal.”

Putin also accused the West of sabotaging Russia-built natural gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea to Germany, a charge vehemently denied by the United States and its allies. Nordic nations said the undersea blasts that damaged the pipelines this week and have led to huge methane leaks involved several hundred pounds of explosives.

The claim by Putin came ahead of an emergency meeting Friday at the UN Security Council in New York on the attacks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, and as Norwegian researchers published a map projecting that a huge plume of methane from the damaged pipelines will travel over large swaths of the Nordic region.

In Washington, US President Joe Biden’s administration dismissed Putin’s pipeline claims as outlandish.

New Semi-High Speed Vandhe Bharat Train Between Ahmedabad-Mumbai Covers 492 Km In Less Than 6 Hours In Maiden Run

New Semi-High Speed Train Covers 492 Km In Less Than 6 Hours In Maiden Run

As many as 313 passengers travelled by the train on the first day.

Ahmedabad:

The new Vande Bharat Express semi-high speed train on Friday covered the distance of 492 km between Ahmedabad and Mumbai in 5.30 hours during its inaugural journey.

As many as 313 passengers travelled by the train on the first day.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the train from Gandhinagar around 10:30 in the morning.

The train departed for Mumbai from platform number 9 of the Ahmedabad railway station at 2 pm and reached the Mumbai Central station at 7.30 pm.

Sumit Thakur, chief public relations officer of Western Railway, said there were 313 passengers on board — 47 in executive chair car class and others in chair car coaches — besides railway officials and mediapersons.

The booking for the new train had opened only a day before.

The passengers were excited to be part of the train’s inaugural run and clicked photos as well as shot videos on mobile phones during the journey.

As the train streaked by, passengers at various stations along the route, railway employees working on the adjoining tracks and passers-by on the roads and people in the buildings along the tracks were also seen clicking pictures or shooting videos.

Vacuum toilets like those seen at airports, spacious and rotating seats in the executive chair car class, the passenger addressing system, wide windows and end-to-end gangway were some of the most appreciated features of the new train.

Jaydeep Nimawat, a real estate businessman who was travelling to Surat from Ahmedabad with his family for Navratri celebrations, was clearly impressed.

“This train is awesome compared to other trains. The seats are spacious and comfortable,” he said.

Siddharth Kinariwala, a railway enthusiast, said he booked a ticket online for a journey from Ahmedabad to Surat.

“I booked a ticket as soon as my boss approved the leave this morning. I wanted to have first-hand experience of the train,” he said.

The seats are comfortable and have good leg space, and the interiors as well as the facilities for passengers too are good, he said.

K K Thakur, co-loco pilot for the Gandhinagar to Ahmedabad journey, told PTI that it was a great honour for him and his colleague to get the opportunity to pilot the inaugural run.

They were given special training beforehand as the train’s dashboard is different from that installed on ordinary trains, he said.

“When we left Gandhinagar, the atmosphere was charged. People chanted ‘Vande Mataram’ when the prime minister showed the green flag,” Thakur said.

Yogesh Shah, who had booked a return journey ticket too, said he was very much enjoying the ride.

“The train is feature-rich, but it also needs to be maintained well,” Shah said.

The fare was reasonable considering the facilities, he added.

The chair car coaches are a little bit congested due to the narrow gangway, a railway official observed.

An employee of the IRCTC said they faced difficulty pushing food trolleys as seat handles obstructed the movement.

“But compared to the old Vande Bharat trains running on other routes, this train has better seats as these are the reclining ones,” the employee said, adding that the interiors too are much better.

The train, which connects the capital cities of Maharashtra and Gujarat, is the third Vande Bharat Express. The first such train was started on New Delhi-Varanasi route, while the second one was started on New Delhi-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra route.
