Instances of Vandalism of Statue, How he Fought Apartheid and Was he a Racist? Learn In #ClassesWithNews18

Classes with News18For the last two years, the world has been restricted to homes. Daily activities that couldn’t be managed without stepping out, came indoors all at once — from office to grocery shopping and schools. As the world accepts the new normal, News18 launches weekly classes for school children, explaining key chapters with examples from happenings around the world. While we try to simplify your subjects, a request to break down a topic can be tweeted @news18dotcom.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, commonly known as Bapu or Mahatma Gandhi is loved not just in India but also abroad. Students must have learned in their class textbooks about Gandhi’s fight against apartheid. While some consider him the father of the nation, as stated in the school textbooks, and praise his efforts in helping India gain independence, however, there have been a recent spurt in hate crimes and instances of vandalism of Gandhi’s statue. Protestors consider him responsible for the partition of India and Pakistan and even called him racist. Let us understand the two sides of the coin with ClassesWithNews18.

Attacks on Gandhi Statues in Recent Years

In a series of attacks on Gandhi statues in the US, the latest incident occurred in August when a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in front of a temple in New York was toppled and smashed. In February, an eight-foot-high statue, located in Manhattan’s Union Square, New York was defaced by some unknown persons.

In January last year, unknown miscreants vandalised, broke, and ripped from the base a statue of Gandhi in a park in California, evoking a strong response from India. In December 2020, Khalistani-supporters desecrated a Gandhi statue in Washington, DC in front of the Indian Embassy.

In June 2020, some unknown miscreants vandalised the statue of Gandhi outside the Indian embassy in the US with graffiti and spray painting, prompting the mission to register a complaint with the local law enforcement agencies. Some say that the perpetrators of these acts and their sponsors are sending the message that they have not accepted peace, human rights, freedom, and equality of all human beings

The incidents are not limited to United Nations, even in India, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalised by unidentified miscreants in Punjab’s Bathinda in July. This incident in Bhatinda came just days after a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was desecrated in Canada’s Ontario province.

Bapu’s Role in South Africa During Apartheid

But why are these instances happening when Gandhi too suffered the brunt of South Africa’s aggressive color bigotry? Gandhi was working in South Africa from 1893 to 1914 so he arrived in Durban aboard SS Safari on 24 May 1893 and soon after became the leader of the South African Indian community. He lived there to fight against injustice and class division. Gandhi spent 21 years in South Africa, where he developed his political views, ethics, and politics. He always considered himself an Indian and a South African.  It was in South Africa that he developed his philosophy of Satyagraha.

Upon his arrival, he faced discrimination for his skin colour and heritage. He was not allowed to sit with European passengers in the stagecoach and told to sit on the floor near the driver, then beaten when he refused. Furthermore, a magistrate of a Durban court ordered Gandhi to remove his turban, which he refused to do. Also once Gandhi was kicked by a police officer out of the footpath onto the street without warning because Indians were not allowed to walk on public footpaths in South Africa.

Gandhi formed the Natal Indian Congress in the year 1894. This organisation led non-violent protests against the oppressive treatment of the white people towards the native Africans and Indians. In 1896, he gathered 800 Indians and took them back to South Africa where they were welcomed by an irate mob, and Gandhi was injured.

Later, during the 1899 Boer War, Gandhi gathered around 1,100 Indians and organised the Indian Ambulance Corps for the British. However, ethnic discrimination and torture on Indians continued.

Gandhi set up Phoenix Farm near Durban, where he trained cadres on non-violent Satyagraha or peaceful restraint. Phoenix Farm is considered as the birthplace of Satyagraha. Gandhi organised the first Satyagraha campaign to protest against the Transvaal Asiatic ordinance that was constituted against the local Indians in 1906.

In 1908, he was sentenced to jail for organising non-violent movements. However, after he met with General Smuts, a British Commonwealth statesman, he was released.

Later Gandhi organised a non-violent resistance campaign in Transvaal against the oppression that Indian minors faced and led around 2,000 Indians across the Transvaal border. He also fought against the nullification of non-Christian marriages in 1913. In fact, after black South Africans gained the right to vote in South Africa in the year 1994, Gandhi was proclaimed a national hero.

The Why Attacks Against Gandhi?

In December 2018, a university in Ghana removed a statue of Gandhi because faculty and students claimed that he had shown contempt for black people while working in South Africa.  A group of people in South Africa carried placards proclaiming “Racist Gandhi must fall” while defacing a statue that depicted him as an attorney in 2019

In The “South African Gandhi: Stretcher-Bearer of Empire”, Ashwin Desai and H Vahed write that Gandhi described black Africans as “savage”, “raw” and living a life of “indolence and nakedness”.

The book also states that during his stay in Africa, Gandhi kept the Indian struggle “separate from that of Africans and coloureds”.  The authors write that Gandhi was indifferent to the plight of the indentured, and believed that state power should remain in white hands.

Also, some South Africans have always accused the Indian freedom fighter of working with the British colonial government to promote racial segregation.

So, is this driving the attacks on Gandhi?

Across the Americas, Europe, South Asia, and elsewhere, social scientists contend that the current political environment has furthered disparagement of the “other” along the lines of nationalism, religion, race, creed, gender, and caste.

Gandhi was attacked and criticized for his views and actions most of his life and to this day. The current allegations of racism are merely the most recent. A child of the British Raj,rule by the British Crown, Gandhi was virtually conditioned to be biased toward race by his upbringing. As Upon entering adulthood, he became in effect a British barrister who – while studying in Britain and later working in South Africa – internalized racist elements.

દેશની સૌથી અનોખી શાળા, કેમ આ શાળામાં છોકરીઓના નામ પાછળ અટકનો ઉપયોગ નથી થતો ? કારણ જાણીને ગર્વ થશે | Madhyapradesh education news bhopal gargi government residential model girls sanskrit vidyalaya no surname for girls hide caste

Exclusive - Bigg Boss 16 contestant Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia: I don't appreciate people who are two-faced, extremely bit***y or judgemental

Choti Sardarni’s Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia was the first contestant to join Salman Khan on stage at the premiere episode of Bigg Boss 16 on October 1. Not only that she was the first to enter the house and become the captain of the house. The actress has been handling her duties well. Before she stepped inside the Bigg Boss 16 house, Nimrit spoke exclusively to ETimes TV and shared her excitement on being a part of the show and how she is going to deal with the challenges. She also revealed what are the qualities she hates in people and if she was skeptical of being judged by the audience 24/7.

“I am excited because it is a once in a lifetime experience and I am just looking forward to it and I am just embracing each day as it comes,” she said.

When asked what made her take on Bigg Boss 16 which is of controversial nature, she said, “For me the one thing that I truly believe in is that when you throw yourself in situations which are uncomfortable, you realise your true strength. I feel that Bigg Boss is an opportunity which gives you a platform to reach out to a larger audience. So whether it’s my battle with mental health or anxiety and the fact that I’ve always been pretty vocal about it, I feel that when opportunities come for you to reach out to larger people, you should take it up and make that kind of impact that you want to. This is something that I always wanted to do. This is also something that compelled me and also I want people to know who the real Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia is. I am grateful for all the love I have received for Choti Sardarni and for having a place in the audiences’ hearts but I want this love to increase by giving them an access to know who I am as a person.”

On being asked if she is bothered about being judged for her actions on national television, “This is the most empowering thing because I am going to be in front of the camera 24/7 and I want the people who love me, the audiences who have given a place to me in their lives, to know that I am as real as them. I am someone who has spoken about mental health or body positivity, now I just want to give people an insight into life and show them that I am as human as them. Every person has good, bad, ugly all aspects and just to own that thing is a matter of a lot of courage which I feel that I have taken at this point. Jaise kehte hai na whatever is in your destiny always comes in its own way and what God has written, nobody can take that away from you. What I can do is just keep my best foot forward and let people know who I am. I want to be relatable to them. I want them to know that you can come from a simple family background which is non-filmy and still can make a place in this industry by just saying true to who you are and that makes all the difference. Even in my little capacity, if I can inspire the youth of this country, men, women, boys and girls, everyone who is watching the show, I will think I have done my bit. Bigg Boss is a platform which everyone watches, so if I can in my little way inspire them then I have fulfilled my job as a lawyer, an actor and as a humanitarian in the future,” she shared.

Nimrit also shared how she is going to deal with fights and clash of ideologies, “I have always been someone for whom what I think and believe is right. I go to all lengths to stick to that because if I don’t stick to what I believe in then I can’t sleep peacefully at night. We meet many people try to take the limelight from others, but aren’t these the kinds of people that we meet at every stage and juncture of our life. Whether it’s our workspace, relatives, friends, family, we meet such people everywhere. When I went to a law school I dealt with all kinds of people, when I stepped into the industry I met all kinds of people and not necessarily everybody needs to love me. But if I can stand up for the truth and be confident that what I am saying really is the truth that makes sense, then my job is done there. Either you sit back in your own bubble, world or you take the plunge and hopefully you will fly high.”

Picture (4)

Talking about household chores, the actress said, “I am very comfortable (laughs) the fact that I lived in a hostel for five years, I can do most of the things. But cooking is something that I am very bad at, so I hope that the housemates don’t get a chance to eat the food cooked by me because I take a longer time to cook food. Maybe I’ll take a very long time to cook breakfast so that is something that I would want to stay away from. Because I can torture myself but would not want to torture the housemates with my culinary skills. But when it comes to doing my own chores, I’ve done all my life. Also, lockdown has been a great learning for every human being to take up all the responsibilities and to also understand. Like in the West there’s so much respect for every profession whether you are carpenter or a plumber or any profession it’s never looked down upon. I will be more than happy to keep the house clean because that will be our space and we must do it.”

Nimrit further stated about the qualities she doesn’t like in people, “I don’t appreciate people who are two-faced or extremely bitchy or overtly judgemental like these are the general qualities that I dont appreciate in people. I am not saying I am perfect, I might do the same thing. These are the things which are putting off for me and also i just felt that irrespective of gender it should be quality in the house. Also, irrespective of gender I feel there should be equality in the house.”

Adipurush poster copied? Animation studio alleges makers of the Prabhas-starrer were 'inspired' by their work | Telugu Movie News

There was a lot of anticipation surrounding Om Raut’s Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali Khan starrer Adipurush on Sunday when the makers released a first-look and teaser in Ayodhya.

But then, the teaser was anything but what fans were expecting with many pointing out the shoddy VFX work in the glimpse. The hashtag #DissapointingAdipurush began trending on social media. There was criticism on Prabhas’ face and body being heavily digitally enhanced, odd choices when it comes to costumes with Prabhas’ character in traditional ones while Saif’s character Lankesh sported something more contemporary, the cartoonish look of all the creatures featured in the teaser and the digitally enhanced backgrounds in every frame, failing to create anything remotely realistic. Many were also surprised and taken aback by the odd mix of live-action and animation that Om seemed to have used.

Now, an animation studio has come forward to allege on their social media that the makers have supposedly copied their work for the first-look and certain scenes in the teaser. Sharing a digitally rendered poster that sees Ram entering the battlefield, the studio wrote, ‘The original,” showing how similar Prabhas’ fist-look from the film was to this one. They also shared a particular shot of the film featuring the vanarasena writing, “This one, my students pointed out the resemblance. (sic)” again, sharing the original poster it seemed to be inspired from.

Adipurush Prabhas 1

The studio also wrote a note stating they’re not looking to ‘fight’ the makers on these charges, stating, “It’s disappointing to see our work being copied like this. But over the years, it’s happened so many times that it’s just funny at this point. We don’t see the point of fighting this as we’d rather focus on bringing you guys awesome content and continue on building that road. But maybe…just maybe, the word will spread 🙂 (sic)”

Adipurush Prabhas 2

The makers are yet to respond to these allegations, with few fans also having noticed the similarities and pointing it out.

The clarification by Brampton city officials comes hours after the Indian High Commission condemned the reports of vandalism late Sunday night calling from prompt action on the perpetrators.

A day after reports of the Bhagavad Gita park sign being vandalised in Canada, the Mayor of Brampton city has now dismissed reports of vandalism and claimed that the blank sign that was installed at the park was done by the builder himself and was simply a placeholder until the permanent sign for the park was installed.

Mayor Patrick Brown termed the entire incident a confusion and tweeted, “We learned that the sign was damaged during the original install & a city staff member brought it back for unplanned maintenance & to reprint.”

The Mayor’s tweet was followed up by the Peel Regional Police who claimed that “there was no evidence of vandalism to the permanent sign or any park structure” adding that the blank park sign that was installed yesterday was nothing but a temporary sign used in the park naming ceremony and the permanent sign is still waiting for the lettering to be applied.

The clarification by Brampton city officials comes hours after the Indian High Commission condemned the reports of vandalism late Sunday night calling from prompt action on the perpetrators.

Reports of vandalism to the recently unveiled Shri Bhagavad Gita Park sign in Canada’s Brampton surfaced on Sunday. The park that was previously called Troyers Park was renamed Shri Bhagavad Gita Park to honor the Hindu community and their contributions. Mayor Brown had yesterday tweeted about reports of vandalism and had assured that the country has zero tolerance for such acts of violence.

Canada has been witnessing a sharp rise in the hate crimes committed against its Indian nationals. Canada which is home to 1.6 million people of Indian origin and non-resident Indians has been witnessing several attacks on Hindu places of worship this year including defacing a temple with anti-Hindu graffiti on September 15.

1. When football clash crushed 125 to death
  • At least 125 people have died in a crush at an Indonesian football match. About 180 were also hurt at an overcrowded Indonesian stadium late Saturday night.
  • Violence: Torched vehicles, including a police truck, littered the streets outside the stadium on Sunday. Police said 13 vehicles in total were damaged.
  • How it happened: Playing at Malang in East Java, the home team Arema FC lost to their bitter rivals Persebaya Surabaya, triggering a clash. The supporters stormed the stadium pitch, demanding that Arema management explain why, after 23 years of undefeated home games, this match ended in a 3-2 loss to the visiting team.
  • The stampede began after police tear-gassed protesters, who had invaded the pitch.
  • Panic: Thousands surged towards the stadium’s exits, where many suffocated in the stampede due to overcrowding. The world football’s governing body, FIFA, says the police or the stewards should not carry or use any “crowd control gas” during matches.
  • Negligence? Indonesia’s security affairs minister Mahfud MD said organisers ignored the recommendation to hold the match in the afternoon instead of the evening, and to sell 38,000 tickets. They sold 42,000 tickets, he said.
  • Local police said all the spectators were Aremanias because the organisers had banned Persebaya fans from entering the stadium in an effort to avoid brawls.
  • A past: The restriction was imposed after the two teams’ supporters clashed in February 2020 causing a loss of $18,000.
  • One of the worst: In 1964, 320 people were killed and over 1,000 injured during a stampede at a Peru stadium. In the UK, 97 people died in 1989, and in 1985, 39 people died and 600 were injured in Belgium in stadium disasters. More here
2. It’s pro-changers versus status quoist in Congress
2. It’s pro-changers versus status quoist in Congress
The pro-changers

  • Set for an electoral face-off with Congress veteran Mallikarjun Kharge for the Congress president’s post, Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor has said, “But for those who are satisfied with the party functioning should choose Kharge Sahab, and those who want change should choose me.”
  • Tharor floated the idea of a public debate between the candidates. He said it would evoke people’s interest in the Congress in a manner similar to the recent British Conservative Party leadership race.
  • Earlier, Tharoor began his campaign releasing the list of 60 proposers from 12 states in a tweet.
  • Pro-changer Karti Chidambaram is using “#ThinkTharoorThinkTomorrow” as his campaign hashtag on social media while seeking vote for Tharoor.
  • And also, Tharoor praised the Nehru-Gandhi family saying it has held and will always hold a special place in the hearts of Congress party members.

Consensus proposers

  • Kharge, who is considered the Gandhis’ favourite for the Congress president’s job, said on Sunday he had told Tharoor that “it is much better to have a consensus candidate for the president’s post”.
  • He explained his reason for evolving a consensus: “As Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi didn’t want to fight the elections, I was asked by my senior colleagues to contest the elections. I’m not fighting against anyone. I’m fighting for the ideology of the Congress party.”
  • “The status quo and change that Dr Tharoor has been talking about will be decided by the delegates and the All India Congress Committee. One person will not be taking the calls, it’ll be taken collectively,” Kharge said.
  • While Tharoor invoked Nehru and the Gandhi family, Kharge chose Mahatma Gandhi saying, “I’m starting my election campaign on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. I’ve always fought and struggled for my ideology and ethics.” More updates here

3. The Martian who lived 16 times over its lifespan at birth
  • India’s Mars Orbiter Mission spacecraft, which was designed to last for six months when launched in November 2013, has lost communication with the ground stations, bringing an end to its life after eight long years.
  • Isro is working out the details on whether the spacecraft ran out of fuel and battery power, or the communication was lost because of an automated manoeuvre during a long eclipse while changing its antenna’s direction.
  • Multiple sources told TOI that it would not be possible to recover the spacecraft. Isro’s UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) director on September 27 communicated the same and Isro will officially announce it soon, a scientist said.
  • The word: Another senior scientist told TOI, “There was a really long eclipse in April 2022. The satellite had been designed with autonomous functions to come out of eclipses and it has done it in the past too. While recovering from the eclipse, the fuel may have been exhausted. The other reason could be that while exiting the eclipse a command for a roll-spin to change direction is done, which could have caused the Earth-facing antenna to change direction.”
  • The spacecraft had handled two black-out phases during an eclipse and one white-out phase in the first year around Mars and another in the second year. In all these instances, the spacecraft was completely autonomous without any help from the ground.
  • The Rs 450-crore mission, which was launched on the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), put India in an elite club of nations to have carried out a mars mission. That the country achieved it in its first attempt was a feather in the cap.
  • Data trove: Carrying five payloads, it sent in over 1TB data in its first year and over 5TB data in five years. More here
4. Who is promising money for cows? It’s not BJP
4. Who is promising money for cows? It’s not BJP
  • Who: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has promised Rs 40 per day for the upkeep of every cow in Gujarat, and a shelter home for non-milching cattle in every district of the state if his Aam Aadmi Party is voted to power.
  • Why: Kejriwal’s announcement is a renewed push to counter the ruling BJP in Gujarat and attract Hindu voters.
  • His quote: “In Delhi, we give Rs 40 per cow per day. The Delhi government gives Rs 20 and another Rs 20 is given by the municipal corporation. If the AAP is voted to power in Gujarat, then we will provide Rs 40 per cow per day for their upkeep.”
  • The timing: His announcement has come when panjrapole (shelters homes for cattle) owners have been protesting against the Gujarat government over its alleged failure to release a package as promised for the shelter homes.
  • Panjrapole will be constructed in every district for non-milching cows and those roaming on roads, he said, promising further that if voted to power, the AAP government will take all necessary steps for the benefit of cows in Gujarat.
  • After claiming that “an IB report” has said that his AAP will form the next government in Gujarat, Kejriwal said, “Ever since the report has come, both these parties have united. They are conducting secret meetings, and the BJP has freaked out.”
  • On election dinner: Asked about an auto-rickshaw driver in Ahmedabad, at whose house Kejriwal had dinner, supporting the BJP, he said, “Whether they are from the Congress or the BJP, they all invite me for dinner. I visit them without considering which party they vote for.”
  • Gujarat is likely to vote for its 182 assembly seats in December. The AAP had failed to make a mark in the 2017 polls.

6. Annexation on Friday, desperation on Sunday
A Russian retreat

  • Russia has withdrawn its troops from Ukraine’s Lyman, a strategic town in Donetsk. It is being seen as a setback for Russia’s campaign in Ukraine. Russia’s defence ministry said the retreat happened over fears that its soldiers could be encircled in the town.
  • Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenky claimed Lyman has been “completely cleared” of Russian troops. Its recapture offers greater reach to the Ukrainian soldiers for the contested territories in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

A setback

  • Videos shared online showed Ukrainian soldiers waving their national flag on the outskirts of the town before the Russian retreat.
  • Russia used Lyman as a logistics hub for its military operations.
  • This comes days after Russia declared that it was annexing Donetsk and three other regions.

The nuke button

  • Lyman’s loss prompted Russia’s ally Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who describes himself as President Vladimir Putin’s foot-soldier, to say Russia should consider using low-yield nuclear weapons.
  • “In my personal opinion, more drastic measures should be taken, right up to the declaration of martial law in the border areas and the use of low-yield nuclear weapons,” he wrote on social media.

Appeal from Pope

  • Pope Francis made an impassioned appeal to Putin to stop “this spiral of violence and death” in Ukraine. He said the crisis carries the risk of a nuclear escalation with uncontrollable global consequences. More here

  • He spearheaded the wind energy revolution in India with the founding of Suzlon Energy in 1995.
  • Before foraying into wind energy, Tanti owned a textile business which he sold in 2001.

The company

  • Under his leadership, Suzlon Energy is now the country’s largest wind energy player with a presence in 17 countries.
  • Tanti’s death comes at a time when Suzlon Energy was set to open its Rs 1,200 crore rights issue on October 11.
  • The group was looking to repay debt, fund working capital and deploy the rest for general corporate purposes. More details here.

The LCH

  • After Apache and Chinook helicopters, Indian Air Force will today induct the first batch of indigenously-developed Light Combat Helicopter (LCH).
  • The 5.8-tonne twin-engine LCH is equipped with Shakti engine developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) in collaboration with French engine-maker Safran. The LCH was declared ready for production in February 2020.

The need

  • The main strength of this Apache-looking helicopter is that it can operate at an altitude of up to 20,000 feet.
  • The IAF operates the older Russian Mi-25 and Mi-35 attack helicopters, of which one squadron has been phased out following the induction of 22 Boeing AH-64E Apache attack helicopters.
  • The LCH is the first dedicated attack helicopter of the Army, which otherwise operates 75 Rudra helicopters.

The orders

  • In March, the Cabinet Committee on Security approved the procurement of 15 LCHs at a cost of Rs 3,887 crore.
  • The defence ministry had said 10 helicopters would be for the IAF and five will be for the Indian Army.
  • The Army plans to acquire 95 LCHs of which seven units, each having 10 helicopters, are planned to be deployed for combat roles in the mountains.
9. Two of Ravan’s kin will be spared this Dussehra
9. Two of Ravan’s kin will be spared this Dussehra
  • A change in Awadh: A centuries-old tradition of burning the effigies on Dussehra will mark a historic shift this year in Lucknow’s Aishbagh. The Aishbagh Ramlila committee has decided to discontinue the 300-year-old practice of burning effigies of Kumbhkaran and Meghnad along with that of Ravan this Dussehra — an occasion to commemorate the Lord Ram, the prince of Ayodhya from the Awadh region over the king of Lanka in the Ramayana age.
  • The reason, said organisers, is that all Ramayana texts mention that Ravan’s brother Kumbhkaran and son Meghnad had tried to dissuade him from fighting against Lord Ram. They eventually participated in the war after the demon king rejected their advice.
  • The idea was first mooted by the Aishbagh Dussehra and Ramlila Committee president Harishchandra Agrawal and secretary Aditya Dwivedi five years ago. But it was rejected by other members on the grounds that burning effigies of the trio was part of a 300-year-old tradition.
  • Argument: They said the Ramayana reveals that Meghnad had told Ravan that Lord Ram was Vishnu’s incarnation, and they should not wage war against him. Kumbhkaran, on the other hand, told him that Sita, whom Ravan had kidnapped, was goddess Jagdamba’s incarnation, and if he doesn’t free her, he might end up losing everything, including his life.
  • Ramlila and Dussehra celebrations are believed to have been started at Aishbagh by sage-poet Goswami Tulsidas, the composer of the Ramacharitmanas, in the 16th century. The tradition to burn effigies was introduced about three centuries ago. Both the traditions were conducted by seers till the 1857 revolt. After the uprising, the celebrations were carried forward by social workers. More here

Acting within days of an announcement by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Centre invited bids on Saturday to build a 2-km-long ropeway to the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain at the cost of Rs 210 crore.

This comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the mega ‘Mahakal Corridor’ project in Ujjain on October 11, which is built on the lines of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project in Varanasi. Like Kashi Vishwanath, the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain is a ‘Jyotirling’ and a much-revered temple of Lord Shiva.

In August, chief minister Chouhan announced that a ropeway will be built from the Ujjain Railway Station to the Mahakaleshwar Temple for the convenience of pilgrims. On Saturday, a department under Union Minister Nitin Gadkari (National Highway Logistics Management Limited) invited tenders for the project, aiming for its completion within the next 18 months.

The project is expected to help elders and physically challenged people who come to the temple, the chief minister had earlier said. Chouhan had requested Gadkari for the project and the nod came through soon.

The Mahakal corridor, meanwhile, has been designed on the concept of ‘Shiv Leela’, with statues depicting the tales of Lord Shiva. The area of the Mahakaleshwar temple premises is being increased to nearly 50 hectares as part of the expansion project, with more entrances being built to decongest the temple. The ropeway project will enable pilgrims to arrive directly at the temple premises from the Ujjain Railway station in a few minutes.
