Ahmedabad: '35% of dengue patients in hospitals' | Ahmedabad News

AHMEDABAD: While dengue cases this week registered a dip compared to the last week of September, the hospitalizations have shot up from 15-20% to 30-35%, according to city doctors.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) data for dengue indicated that the hospitalizations till September have increased by 23% – from 742 in 2021 to 916 in 2022. Of these, two-thirds are in government hospitals.
Dr Vivek Dave, a critical care specialist, said that the number of young and middle-aged patients are higher this year. “The main reason for hospitalization is thrombocytopenia or platelet depletion. It needs hospitalization as it can lead to complications like severe capillary leakage syndrome, which leads to multi-organ failure or acute kidney injury,” he said, adding that about 30-35% patients need hospitalization due to complications.
Dr Rakesh Joshi, medical superintendent of Civil Hospital, said that in 30 days, they have admitted 150 patients – or five patients daily. Many have recorded complications, primarily related to fast-depleting platelets. “Fever OPDs in the past two months have touched 1 lakh,” he said. Dr Chetan Trivedi, a city paediatrician, said that the relatively higher number of kids and teens being diagnosed with dengue is owing to the clusters of mosquitoes in open areas around the educational institutions.
“Dengue fever usually subsides in five days, but in some cases, it extends for seven days or beyond. In such cases, critical care is important to avoid complications,” he said. “It’s very likely that the serotype of the infection is different and should be studied to decide on the treatment protocol.” “Dengue shock is severe form of dengue infection and can affect multiple organs,” said Dr Jigar Mehta, a city-based critical care specialist. “Fever that doesn’t subside in two days should not be ignored. Hydration is important in the initial phase and so is proper rest.” Experts said that patients often take it easy once the fever subsides, but then the platelet count dips.

Mars mission finally comes to an end (File)

'US stands with Iranian women': Biden amid Ayatollah's accusation on protests | World News

The United States stands with the women of Iran “and all the citizens who are inspiring the world with their bravery,” Joe Biden said on Monday as visuals and reports of action against protesters – agitating to assert their freedom to choose on wearing headscarves or hijabs – continue to shock the world. “I remain gravely concerned about reports of the intensifying violent crackdown on peaceful protests in Iran, including students and women, who are demanding their equal rights and basic human dignity,” the US president said in a statement.

“The United States will be imposing further costs on perpetrators of violence against peaceful protestors. We will continue holding Iranian officials accountable and supporting the rights of Iranians to protest freely,” he further added.

His remarks came as Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused the United States and Israel of ‘planning the protests.’ “This rioting was planned…these riots and insecurities were designed by America and the Zionist regime, and their employees,” he was quoted as saying by news agency AP.

In another statement, the White House said it was “alarmed and appalled’ at the crackdown by the Iranian authorities on student protesters, angered by the death of a young woman in the custody of Iran’s morality police. “We’re alarmed and appalled by reports of security authorities responding to university students’ peaceful protests with violence and mass arrests. University students are the talented young people who should be the future of Iran,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was quoted as saying by news agencies.

These crackdowns are “precisely the sort of behaviour that drives Iran’s talented young people to leave a country by the thousands to seek dignity and opportunity elsewhere,” she added.

UN chief Antonio Guterres had earlier said that he was becoming “increasingly concerned” about reports of the death toll rising, “including women and children.”

The protests in Iran, sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, are flaring up across the country for a third week despite government efforts to quell demonstrations. 22-year-old Amini was arrested for allegedly violating the country’s strict Islamic dress code. The protests also have spread across the Middle East and to Europe and North America with thousands taking to the streets in different parts of the world in a display of solidarity.

The country’s security forces have responded to the protests with tear gas, metal pellets and in some cases live fire, according to rights groups and widely shared footage, AP reported. While it is being reported that thousands have been arrested and nearly hundred lives have been lost, the scope of the crackdown remains unclear.

History, Significance and Why it is Celebrated on Dussehra?

DHAMMACHAKRA PRAVARTAN DIN 2022: On October 14, 1956, India’s first law minister and the architect of the Indian constitution, Bhimrao Ambedkar, along with over 3 lakhs of his followers, embraced Buddhism after renouncing Hinduism. The day it happened is called Dhammachakra Pravartan Din. Even though the conversion took place on October 14, Dhammachakra Pravartan Din, which marks the event, is celebrated on Ashoka Vijayadashami (Dussehra) every year. This year it will be celebrated on October 5.

Dr Ambedkar had decided to leave Hinduism early on and studied other religions to understand which one will suit him better, and finally chose Buddhism. He chose ‘a morally sound religion.’

He was a staunch opposer of Hinduism because he was convinced that the religion propagates ‘wrong ideals and has a social life of the wrong kind.’

After renouncing Hinduism in the grand ceremony that happened in Nagpur, Ambedkar had said, “By discarding my ancient religion which stood for inequality and oppression, today I am reborn.”

Ambedkar had made 22 pledges on the day when he renounced Hinduism. One of which is, “I thereby reject my old religion, Hinduism, which is detrimental to the prosperity of humankind and which discriminates between man and man and which treats me as inferior.”

Ambedkar fought against the caste discrimination against Dalits and wrote extensively against caste in Hinduism.

In the inaugural issue of his journal Mooknayak, Ambedkar called the Hindu society a ‘tower’ where every floor is designated to a particular caste. Ambedkar continues, “The point worth remembering is that this tower has no staircase and therefore there is no way of climbing up or down from one floor to another.”

Ambedkar elaborated by saying that there is no way that a meritorious person can climb up a floor or a person living on a higher floor, who is not meritorious, can be demoted to a lower floor. He said that in this tower, a person dies on the floor where he is born.

However, on Dhammachakra Pravartan Din, he left that society and embraced Buddhism. A day later, Ambedkar said, “Even though I was born in the Hindu religion, I will not die in the Hindu religion.”

Amit Shah is on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir

Director General of Police Dilbag Singh described it as an “extremely unfortunate” incident and said a manhunt had been launched to nab his domestic help identified as Jasir, who is absconding

Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General (Prisons) Hemant K. Lohia was found murdered at his residence in Jammu on Monday night with police suspecting his domestic help as the main culprit.

Director General of Police Dilbag Singh described it as an “extremely unfortunate” incident and said a manhunt had been launched to nab his domestic help identified as Jasir, who is absconding.

According to Singh, the suspect even tried to set fire to the body of 57-year-old Lohia, who was promoted and appointed as Director General of prisons in the Union Territory in August.

Mukesh Singh, Additional Director General of Police, Jammu Zone, said Lohia, a 1992-batch IPS officer, was found dead with burn injuries on his body and his throat slit when he visited the house in Udaiwala on the outskirts of Jammu.

The guards stationed at the officer’s residence observed fire in Lohia’s room. He explained that they had to break open the door because it was locked from the inside.

The ADGP said the preliminary investigation of the crime scene points to murder.

“The domestic help has gone missing. “The search for him has begun,” he said, adding that forensic and crime teams are on the scene.

“The investigation has begun.” Senior officers are on the scene,” the officer said, adding that the J&K Police family is devastated by the death of their senior officer.

ભારત જોડો યાત્રા વચ્ચે કોંગ્રેસના નેતાઓનું ભંગાણ યથાવત, હરીશ રાવત હવે છોડી શકે છે કોંગ્રેસ | The rift between Congress leaders continues amid the Join Bharat Yatra, Harish Rawat may now leave the Congress

harish Rawat- Former CM Uttarkahand

WORLD ANIMAL DAY 2022: October 4 is marked as World Animal Day, a global initiative for animal rights that aims at ensuring better standards for animal welfare. This day in general not only educates people about our most endangered species but also teaches how to rescue them. World Animal Day is gradually turning into a global event that unites and encourages the animal protection movement. People can commemorate this day by contributing something to animal rescue shelters, launching animal welfare campaigns, and more.

World Animal Day: History and Significance

World Animal Day was celebrated for the first time on March 24, 1925, in Berlin, Germany on the initiative of cynologist Heinrich Zimmermann. His purpose to introduce this occasion was to spread awareness about animal welfare. More than 5,000 people attended the first event organised and offered their support for the cause. Interestingly, World Animal Day coincides with the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

The day is significant as it reminds us how animals improve our lives. It also aims to motivate various communities and groups against the brutal behaviour of animals.

World Animal Day: Theme

This year the theme for World Animal Day is a “shared planet” which highlights that the world belongs to every living creature and not just humans.

The second part of the programme will deal with management and use of technique while the third component, which will be about 25% of the training, will be motivational. For this, Kumar said, the department is arranging for retired bureaucrats, IIM experts etc to conduct these sessions. “We will also have sessions on Zoom for experts who are out of the city. The entire programme will be videographed so that we can monitor the training. One session will also be held by chief minister Yogi Adityanath but the details of that are yet to be finalised. During the two weeks, we will also give out the postings to the fellows,” Kumar said.
The training will be conducted at the State Institute of Rural Development campus in Bakshi ka Talab where the fellows will also be put up in the hostel.
The programme, being organised for the first time, saw more than 26,000 persons apply for 100 posts. The selected fellows will be placed under district magistrates and block development officers. They will work on contract for a year at a stipend of Rs 30,000 per month and will get an additional Rs 10,000 per month for travel and a one-time payment of Rs 15,000 for a tablet.
They will be employed full time and their work will include review of implementation of projects, compilation of primary data, handling problems and giving suggestions to make projects and schemes people friendly. They will be required to submit monthly progress reports in which they will detail public perception about schemes and the challenges being faced in their implementation.

In a first, RBI to tell government why inflation target is breached

NEW DELHI: The government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) are vowing to do “whatever it takes” to bring retail inflation within the 6% tolerance level even as the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is preparing to meet over the next few weeks for the first time to write to the finance ministry, explaining the reasons behind why average inflation has not been within the 2-6% band for three straight quarters.
The MPC is expected to meet towards the end of the month as a communication must be sent to the government within a month of the retail inflation data being released. Inflation based on the consumer price index (CPI) is due to be released on October 12.
Officials said that under the law, the letter from the RBI will be confidential and it will be for the government to decide if it wants to make the contents public. “It is privileged communication and it cannot simply be released. It is not the only communication between the regulator or other wings of the government that is confidential,” said an officer.

They explained that based on the communication, the finance ministry will decide if other steps are required, although the government and the central bank have already taken several steps to cool down inflation.
While the MPC has raised rates by 1.9 percentage points, the government has tweaked import duty on several products, including farm goods, in addition to restricting export of several items in a bid to enhance availability in the domestic market.
A few years ago, the government had amended the RBI Act, which led to the establishment of the MPC and a target of 4% inflation was fixed, allowing for deviation of up to 2% on either side.
While inflation has remained largely within the band, for the last few months it has remained above 6%, first due to the impact of Covid-19 and supply disruption and subsequently due to the war in Ukraine, which sent global commodity prices soaring.
RBI expects inflation to moderate to 5.8% during the March quarter, compared to the 7% reading in August. RBI expects retail inflation to come closer to the 4% target over a two-year cycle. “That is our expectation even now. But there are so many uncertainties that are playing from time to time,” RBI governor Shaktikanta Das had said during the post-policy media interaction on Friday.

Medicine Nobel goes to Neanderthal researcher

NEW DELHI: The Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine was awarded on Monday to Svante Paabo, a Swedish-born scientist who spent decades trying to extract DNA from 40,000-year-old bones, culminating in the unveiling of the Neanderthal genome in 2010.
The publication of that genome opened the door to investigating questions that had bedevilled paleontologists since Neanderthal fossils were first found in a German quarry in 1856: how did those early humans relate to modern ones, and what made them different?
Paabo’s abiding obsession — how to recover and analyse ancient genetic material — seemed destined to founder in the face of vexing technical difficulties, the Nobel committee said on Monday. Ancient DNA suffers from chemical damage and tends to be present in ancient samples at very low levels. It can easily be drenched in the DNA of scientists charged with handling it, making it difficult to distinguish ancient genes from modern ones. And bacteria too can leave DNA in fossils.

But Paabo harnessed the latest technology for sequencing DNA. When he needed more bone, he navigated the political sensitivities of obtaining chunks of fossils from other countries. He designed “clean rooms”, labs with high standards for cleanliness that protected specimens from contamination. And once he and his team unravelled the millions of fragments of DNA in the fossils, they used sophisticated statistical techniques to pick out the modern genetic contaminants.
“It was certainly considered to be impossible to recover DNA from 40,000-year-old bones,” said Dr Nils-Goran Larsson, the chairman of the Nobel Committee for medicine and a professor in medical biochemistry for the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

The research helped establish that modern humans and Neanderthals share a common ancestor that lived some 600,000 years ago. Paabo and his team also found genetic evidence that, during periods of coexistence, modern humans and Neanderthals had children together.
Neanderthals lived across much of Europe until they disappeared about 30,000 years ago for reasons that remain the subject of intense debate. The ancestors of modern humans evolved in Africa before migrating to Europe and Asia, where they mixed with more ancient human forms and picked up genetic changes that strengthened their chances of survival in new environments. Those included gene variants that improved the ability to live at high altitudes and influenced how the immune system responded to infection.
It took some three decades of research for Paabo to describe the Neanderthal genome. He first went looking for DNA in mummies and older animals, like extinct cave bears and ground sloths, before he turned his attention to ancient humans. “I longed to bring a new rigor to the study of human history by investigating DNA sequence variation in ancient humans,” he wrote in his 2014 memoir ‘Neanderthal Man: In Search of Lost Genomes’.
Paabo drew early inspiration from his Nobel laureate father, Sune Bergstrom, and in his memoir, recounts that he learned later in life of his father’s “double life”, that his existence had been kept a secret from his father’s other family. Of his own family, he says he “had always thought of myself as gay” before meeting the woman who would become his wife. He now identifies as bisexual and has two children with primatologist Linda Vigilant.
