Farmers' Issues Likely to Be Main Agenda of KCR's Bharat Rashtra Samithi

KCR has held several rounds of meeting with representatives of farmers’ unions from various states here and the meeting adopted a unanimous resolution to constitute a National Farmers’ United Forum to ensure the implementation of Telangana government’s farmer welfare schemes in the country

Farmers’ issues such as free power are likely to be the focal points in Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s agenda, if one goes by the previous statements made by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) on Wednesday changed its name to ‘Bharat Rashtra Samithi’ (BRS), heralding the party’s foray into national politics.

Rao has held several rounds of meeting with representatives of farmers’ unions from various states here and the meeting adopted a unanimous resolution to constitute a National Farmers’ United Forum to ensure the implementation of Telangana government’s farmer welfare schemes in the country. Rao had earlier promised to supply free power to farmers across the country, if a non-BJP government was voted to power in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Defending his statement, he said it would cost only Rs 1.45 lakh crore if free power is extended to all farmers in the country. He said it was a small amount when compared to Rs 12 lakh crore bank loans, which were ‘written off’ in the name of Non-performing Assets (NPA) to various corporate houses.

The party leader also time and again harped on optimum utilization of river waters in the country which is otherwise ‘wasted’ due to lack of foresight of present NDA and previous UPA governments at the Centre. The BRS is also likely to showcase the welfare programmes being implemented in Telangana like ‘Rythu Bandhu’ investment support schemes for farmers, ‘Rythu Bima’ life insurance for farmers and other initiatives in agriculture sector.

The rechristened party would also present ‘Dalit Bandhu’ (grant of Rs 10 lakh per household to Dalits) to the nation. The KCR-led government has recently issued an order hiking the quota to Scheduled Tribes to 10 per cent from the existing six per cent. Though a resolution was passed by the state Assembly in 2017 and sent for Presidential assent, it was not cleared by the union government.

Speaking to reporters after the renaming event, Telangana Minister E Dayakar Rao said the Chief Minister’s idea is to take the party to the national level even as the symbol and colour of TRS will remain the same. Another minister Satyavathi Rathod said the welfare schemes that are implemented in Telangana would be replicated all over the country.

Asaduddin Owaisi On RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat's Remarks

'No Need For Population Control': Asaduddin Owaisi On RSS Chief's Comment

The worry is an ageing population, unemployed youth who cannot support elderly, Asaduddin Owaisi said.

Hyderabad:

There is no need for population control as the country has already achieved replacement rate, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi said on Wednesday, reacting to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s comment on population policy.

In a tweet, Mr Owaisi said, “If Hindus & Muslims have “same DNA” then where’s the imbalance?” There’s no need for population control as we’ve already achieved replacement rate. The worry is an ageing population & unemployed youth who cannot support elderly. Muslims have sharpest decline in fertility rate.”

Speaking at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s Dussehra rally in Nagpur today, Mr Bhagwat said that India should have a population policy prepared after comprehensive thought and it should be applicable to all communities equally.

The RSS chief said community-based population imbalance is an important subject and should not be ignored.

Mr Owaisi further said, “For Mohan, it is Annual Day of Dog Whistles & Hate Speech. Fear-mongering over “population imbalance” has resulted in genocide, ethnic cleansing & hate crimes across the world. Kosovo was created after a genocide of Albanian Muslims by Serbian nationalists.”

The four had entered the manhole without any safety equipment to clean. During this, they suffocated after inhaling poisonous gases and fell unconscious, police said.

Four sanitation workers died of suffocation after inhaling toxic gases while cleaning the underground sewer of a Faridabad hospital on Wednesday afternoon, police said. Rohit, his brother Ravi, Vishal and Ravi Goldar, residents of Sanjay Camp in Delhi’s Dakshinpuri, had come to the QRG Hospital in Faridabad Sector 16 for sewer cleaning through an agency named Santosh Allied Service, they said.

“The four had entered the manhole without any safety equipment to clean. During this, they suffocated after inhaling poisonous gases and fell unconscious. When they cried for help, their colleagues and hospital staff reached the spot. All four were taken out and admitted to the hospital,” ACP, Central, Mohinder Verma said. “Soon after, the doctors declared all four dead. We are investigating the matter,” he added.

The police have kept the bodies at the mortuary of Badshah Khan Hospital. Their families have been informed, the official said. The police said the victims used to come to the hospital every month for work.

Distancing itself from the entire episode, the hospital management said the agency engaged for sewer cleaning services was responsible for the incident “Strictest action will be taken against those found responsible,” Verma added.

Video Shows First Proof Of Ocean's Predator Killing Great White Sharks

Video Shows First Proof Of Ocean's Predator Killing Great White Sharks

The images were filmed in May and one of the videos first aired in June. (File)

Johannesburg, South Africa:

Scientists have published new findings confirming that orcas hunt great white sharks, after the marine mammal was captured on camera killing one of the world’s largest sea predators.

A pod of killer whales is seen chasing sharks during an hour-long pursuit off Mossel Bay, a port town in the southern Western Cape province, in helicopter and drone footage that informed a scientific study released this week.

“This behaviour has never been witnessed in detail before, and certainly never from the air,” said lead author Alison Towner, a shark scientist at Marine Dynamics Academy in Gansbaai, South Africa.

One clip shows five orcas chasing and killing a great white and scientists believe three more were mauled to death during the hunt.

“Killer whales are highly intelligent and social animals. Their group hunting methods make them incredibly effective predators,” Simon Elwen, a marine mammal specialist and study co-author said in a statement released Tuesday.

Orcas, the ocean’s top predator, have been known to prey on other shark species, but evidence of attacks on great whites was previously limited.

The study did not address the reasons behind the behaviour.

One of the whales was known to have attacked white sharks before, but the other four were not.

The authors said this suggested the practice was spreading, with earlier studies having established that the black and white animals can learn from one other through “cultural transmission”.

Sharks disappeared from the area after the attack, with only one great white spotted in the next 45 days, according to the paper that was published in scientific journal Ecology.

The authors said this confirmed sharks have a flight response and could have broader implications.

In earlier observed cases, the animals ended up abandoning former key habitats, with consequences for the ecosystem and shark-related tourism, said marine biologist Alison Kock of South African National Parks.

The images were filmed in May and one of the videos first aired in June.

Iran Schoolgirls Remove Hijabs, Shout Slogans Amid Anti-Hijab Protests

Iran Schoolgirls Remove Hijabs, Shout Slogans Amid Anti-Hijab Protests

The anti-hijab protests became the biggest wave of protests to rock Iran in three years. (File)

Paris:

Iranian schoolgirls have come to the fore in protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, removing their hijabs and staging sporadic rallies in defiance of a lethal crackdown by the security forces.

Amini, 22, was pronounced dead days after the notorious morality police detained the Iranian Kurd last month for allegedly breaching the Islamic republic’s strict dress code for women.

Anger flared at her funeral and spread to become the biggest wave of protests to rock Iran in almost three years, despite the backlash by the security forces that has killed scores and seen hundreds arrested.

Students rallied at the weekend before being confronted by riot police who cornered them in an underground car park of Tehran’s prestigious Sharif University of Technology before hauling them away.

Schoolgirls have since taken up the baton around the country, removing their hijabs, shouting anti-regime slogans and defacing images of the clerical state’s leaders.

“Death to the dictator,” a group of bare-headed girls is heard chanting in reference to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as they force a man, reportedly the principal, out of a school in Karaj, west of Tehran, on Monday in a video verified by AFP.

Another group of girls sings “Woman, life, freedom”, as they march down a street of the Karaj neighbourhood of Gohardasht.

“These are really extraordinary scenes. If these protests are going to achieve anything, it will be because of the schoolgirls,” Esfandyar Batmanghelidj of the Bourse & Bazaar news and analysis website tweeted in response.

Schoolgirls are also seen emptying classrooms and appearing at flash-mob protests to avoid detection, in other footage shared online.

A boisterous group of girls are seen yelling “Get lost, Basiji”, in reference to the paramilitary force, at a man standing at a podium in the southern city of Shiraz, in a video shared by the 1500tasvir social media channel.

AFP has been unable to independently verify the footage.

Singer silenced

As the women-led protests stretch into a fourth week, Iran has widened its crackdown, rounding up high profile supporters of the movement and imposing internet restrictions that limit access to social media.

On Tuesday night, Iranian pop singer Shervin Hajipour, who was arrested after his song in support of the protests went viral and became an anthem for the movement, was freed on bail.

“I’m here to say I’m okay. But I am sorry that some particular movements based outside of Iran — which I have had no relations with — made some improper political uses of this song,” he told his 1.9 million Instagram followers shortly after his release.

Iran’s judiciary meanwhile opened an investigation into the death of teenage girl Nika Shakrami who was reportedly killed during the protests.

BBC Persian and Iran Wire had reported that authorities had taken possession of her body and secretly buried her on Monday to avoid a funeral that could spark more protests.

At least 92 protesters have been killed in the unrest, according to Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights (IHR).

Amnesty International has confirmed 53 deaths, while Fars news agency put the death count at “around 60” last week. At least 12 security personnel have been reported killed.

Another 63 people were killed last week when security forces “bloodily suppressed” a protest in Zahedan, near Iran’s southeastern border with Pakistan, said IHR.

The clashes erupted after Friday prayers during protests sparked by accusations a police chief in the region had raped a teenage girl of the Baluch Sunni minority, it said.

Sanctions loom

The crackdown has drawn global condemnation.

On Tuesday the European Union joined the United States in warning that it was looking to impose tough new sanctions on Iran over the bloody crackdown.

Proposed punitive measures targeting senior Iranian officials include “freezing their assets and their right to travel”, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said.

Iran has repeatedly accused outside forces of stoking the protests and last week said nine foreign nationals — including from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland — had been arrested.

On Wednesday, Iran summoned British ambassador Simon Shercliff to hear a protest over “meddlesome statements” over the protests.

The unrest has overshadowed diplomatic efforts to revive a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major powers which had come close to a breakthrough in recent months before stalling again.

But the White House said the “problems with Iran’s behaviour” are separate from efforts to revive the nuclear deal.

Lactose Intolerance: What Is It, Symptoms & Treatment

Coconut milk is a great alternative to dairy milk

Lactose Intolerance is one of the most common food-related illnesses. People that are lactose intolerant have trouble digesting dairy products. Dairy products have a sugar called lactose. Lactose intolerance is caused when the digestive system is unable to break down this sugar (lactose).

The small intestines produce enzymes called lactase, these enzymes are responsible for breaking down the lactose while digesting dairy foods. However, if a person has a low level of lactase in their system, this might make it difficult for them to properly digest dairy products. Lactose intolerance might also be caused as a symptom of other intestine-related diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, Celiac disease, etc.

Are lactose intolerance and dairy allergy the same?

The simple answer is no. Lactose intolerance is not a food allergy. Lactose intolerance is caused by the shortage of lactase enzymes in your digestive system. On the other hand, dairy allergies are a reaction caused by the immune system. This happens when the immune system identifies dairy products as a threat. Hence, reacting in various ways to kill the “invader”. Dairy allergies can be life-threatening or severely affect the person. On the other hand, lactose intolerance might have comparatively milder symptoms. You might experience an upset stomach or feel bloated and gradually resume back to feeling normal.

What are the symptoms?

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhoea
  • Gas
  • Stomach ache

Treatment & How to deal with Lactose Intolerance?

As discussed above, lactose intolerance is one of the most common and non-threatening digestion-related illnesses. Hence, living with lactose intolerance does not significantly affect your day-to-day life. However, regularly experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea is not ideal either.

Here are a few tips you can try to avoid experiencing lactose intolerance:

Avoid dairy products

It goes without saying that the best way to avoid sickness from lactose intolerance is to avoid high-lactose foods. However, cutting out dairy products completely can be tough. If you are someone who is open to quitting dairy products, start with foods that are comparatively higher in lactose, such as milk. Instead go for low lactose products such as yogurt, hard cheese, paneer, etc.

Try dairy alternatives

Veganism has given rise to many plant-based dairy alternatives which can be incorporated into your diet even if you are not a vegan. Soy milk, oat milk, and nut milk are great alternatives for regular dairy milk. Tofu and tempeh are great replacements for cottage cheese. Butter can be substituted by much healthier options such as olive oil or avocado oil.

Lactase capsules

Lactase enzymes that help break down the lactose in dairy products are accessible through capsules. You can consult a doctor or if you have been professionally diagnosed with lactose intolerance you can consume lactase capsules. Regularly consuming lactase capsules can help your body digest dairy products better.

Read before you eat

If you are highly intolerant to lactose you might want to read the ingredients on packed foods before you buy them. Many foods such as bread, cake, and curries, might have some percentage of dairy products like milk, butter, etc. which might make you sick later.

Finally, we do encourage you to consume dairy products in smaller amounts and occasionally. Even though lactose intolerance does not have life-threatening symptoms, vomiting or experiencing bowel issues regularly are also not ideal for your body and mind. Hence, try dairy-free products or inculcate consuming lactase capsules in your routine.
