With DKS as minder, Congress pitches tent in Karnataka to ring-fence MLAs

BENGALURU: Karnataka is Congress’s choice of sanctuary for prospective party MLAs from Rajasthan and Telangana as the spectre of a hung verdict looms over both states, bringing resort politics back into the game. If needed, Congress will also herd its MLAs from MP and Chhattisgarh into the southern state, sources said.
The Congress leadership is believed to have asked deputy CM and PCC chief D K Shivakumara past master at troubleshooting, to do whatever it takes to preempt poaching of MLAs from Rajasthan and Telangana by rivals BJP and BRS once the poll results are declared on Sunday.
Shivakumar and the state unit have been asked to identify “at least 2-3 resorts or star hotels” to house these MLAs, and also be prepared to provide additional accommodation should the same script play out in MP and Chhattisgarh, sources said.
“Based on a preliminary reading of the situation, if Congress wins 70 of the 119 seats in Telangana, there will be no need to keep our MLAs safe. But if our tally is below 70, then MLAs will be brought to Bengaluru,” a Congress legislator said.
The Rajasthan vote count could produce a thriller, with the battle between Congress and BJP likely to be much closer than predicted by various exit polls.
Shivakumar said he would “abide by” whatever the high command and the party require of him. “I do not believe the exit poll results count for much because of the small sample size used by media houses. Congress is comfortably ahead in all five states (that have gone to polls) but we have to work in accordance with the party’s directives.”With Karnataka being the only large state in the country that is currently governed by Congress, the party believes Shivakumar can be trusted to keep its flock together, sources said.
Shivakumar had his share of limelight when he forged an alliance with JD(S) in 2019 and kept the Congress MLAs together amid alleged poaching attempts by former CM B S Yediyurappa after the polls threw up a hung assembly.
In late 2019, he was entrusted with the task of herding Congress MLAs from Gujarat into a Karnataka resort to ensure they didn’t cross-vote in the Rajya Sabha election in which Ahmed Patel, a confidant of former AICC president Sonia Gandhi, was the party’s candidate.
In both instances, Shivakumar asked his brother and Bengaluru Rural MP D K Suresh and their cousin, MLC D K Ravi, to identify places in their native Ramanagara district of southern Karnataka to keep the legislators.

Ajit Pawar unveils plans to contest Lok Sabha polls from Pawar bastions

PUNE: Maharashtra deputy CM Ajit Pawar on Friday said his faction would contest Baramati, Shirur, Satara and Raigad Lok Sabha seats in the next general elections. Raigad MP Sunil Tatkare has sided with Ajit Pawar, while the MPs of the other three seats are with Sharad Pawar. A face-off between the two NCP factions is likely if Ajit, who has rebelled against his uncle to join the Shinde-led BJP government in Maharashtra, sticks to his stand.
Speaking at a two-day party session at Karjat, Ajit said Lok Sabha polls are likely to be declared in the first week of March, 2024.
Baramati, a Pawar family bastion, is represented by Sharad Pawar’s daughter, Supriya Sule. She won the last three Lok Sabha polls. When asked if he would field a candidate against his cousin, Ajit said: “Being party president, I have the right to announce the candidates. Who will contest against them that I can’t comment on.” Sule reacted saying in a democracy every party has the right to announce its candidates.
Apart from Baramati, Satara is represented by an old associate of Sharad Pawar, Shrinivas Patil, and Shirur by actor-turned-politician Amol Kolhe. Patil and Kolhe are said to be in the Sharad Pawar camp.
Addressing his supporters at a two-day party session in Karjat, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said: “Baramati, Satara, Shirur and Raigad seats are currently with our party and we will definitely contest these seats in the coming elections. Apart from these seats, there are some Lok Sabha seats in the state, which are with Uddhav Thackeray’s party, and after the discussion with our alliance partners, we will get some of those seats as well to contest.” His comments on the Baramati Lok Sabha seat are bound to set off speculation about the internal dynamics between the two factions. Even during the ‘Modi wave’ in 2014, Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule had managed to secure a win in Baramati, though with a narrow margin.

For India, Pannun case may be an unpleasant one

White House spokesperson John Kirby said the US would continue to work to improve and strengthen its strategic partnership with India despite the Pannun episode. “At the same time, we take these allegations and this investigation very seriously,” he said.
According to the US Justice Department chargesheeta purported drug dealer, Nikhil Gupta, conspired to kill Pannun on directions from an Indian intelligence official.
The remarks came amid raging speculation in US circles over whether the alleged plot was officially sanctioned by New Delhi or a rogue operation involving an errant intelligence official. India has denied it has a policy of conducting transnational killing of political enemies, but US media reports closely examined the career of India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, his remarks over the years as an intelligence boffin, and previous killings of political reprobates outside the country, including in Pakistan.
It now transpires that conversations between Washington and New Delhi on the alleged plot was taking place at the highest level even as the leaders visited each others country —PM Modi’s state visit to Washington DC in June and President Biden’s trip to New Delhi in September for the G20 summit, among them.

Everything you need to know about Nikhil Gupta, charged in US for assassination plot of Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun

Biden, according to US officials, personally took up the issue with Modi after Washington had sent its two top intelligence officials, CIA director William Burns and director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, to New Delhi to raise the issue. The US, according to some reports, is inclined to take India’s word that it was not an officially sanctioned mission. Washington’s “measured response, according to some diplomats in New Delhi, is a sign that US officials could have information to suggest that the plot did not go far up the chain in India,” the New York Times said in a report from New Delhi. The paper said US diplomats also pointed to “the sloppiness of the plot, as detailed in the court documents, which seems at odds with the sophistication of some top Indian security officials.”
However, the episode may turn out to be a heavy cross for India to bear, despite the inherent strength of India-US relations. This was evident when the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee chair Benjamin Cardin announcing shortly after the indictment that he would hold a hearing next week related to the alleged involvement of Indian officials in the plot.
Cardin even in the past, as a member of the committee, has been critical of India for alleged violation of human rights and freedom of speech, while advocating formal and regular India-US dialogue on human rights issues.

Can a woman be booked in rape case? Supreme Court takes up plea

NEW DELHI: Can a woman be booked in a rape case? The Supreme Court on Friday sought response from the Punjab Police to a petition by a 62-year-old woman booked on rape charges on the complaint of her daughter-in-law, who had got married to her son through a video call.
Appearing for the 62-year-old woman petitioner, advocate Rishi Malhotra argued before a bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Sanjay Karol that the SC had ruled that a woman cannot be booked in a gang rape case and the core of the principle was that a woman cannot be made an accused in a rape case.
The complainant had alleged that the petitioner’s elder son who lives in the USA had befriended her through Facebook and as their friendship blossomed, he proposed marriage. She claimed that she consented to marriage as he had threatened to commit suicide if she didn’t marry him. The marriage was solemnised in September last year through a video call.
After the marriage, the complainant started living with the mother-in-law. The petitioner woman said that her younger son came from Portugal and stayed with her for sometime. While he was going back, the daughter-in-law insisted he take her along with him, but he left for Portugal on January 31 this year. Immediately after he left, the daughter-in-law and her family members allegedly pressured the mother-in-law to annul the marriage with her elder son. On February 5, a settlement was arrived at by which the mother-in-law gave Rs 11 lakh to the complainant for annulment of the marriage.
The petitioner alleged that the demands increased thereafter and when she refused to comply, the estranged daughter-in-law filed a sexual assault case against her and her younger son on February 22. The complainant alleged that the petitioner’s younger son raped her and took her nude pictures while her mother-in-law had silenced her protests against the sexual assault.
Importantly, the 62-year-old woman’s anticipatory bail was rejected by a Gurdaspur sessions court.
Her plea for pre-arrest bail was also rejected by the Punjab and Haryana HC on November 3.

A temple where a dog is the deity | India News

MEERUT: In Secunderabad town of Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district, 60km from the national capital, lies a unique temple where the deity is a dog. Yes, that’s right.
Surrounded by Hindu gods, there’s a special grave there of the dog and its statue that the faithful in thousands every year pay obeisance to. The whole place lights up with celebrations during Diwali, Holi, Navratri and other Hindu festivals in the dog’s honour, drawing pilgrims from as far as Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and many parts of Uttar Pradesh.
When a TOI team visited the temple to learn more about the untold narrative behind the ‘dog temple’, local residents enthusiastically shared a story passed on through generations. Baba Chargera revered godman, had a close friendship with a dog nearly a hundred years ago. The holy man, who was blind, found comfort in his companion until he died.
Laxman Saini50, a devotee who looks after the temple, said, “Baba and the dog were inseparable. When Baba died, the dog too jumped into his grave. Though people pulled the dog out, it passed away hours later, unable to bear the separation. To honour their bond, our forefathers made a resting place for the dog beside the Baba’s samadhi and a statue was erected.”
For those who come to pray, the dog’s grave isn’t just a memorial – they believe it protects them from negative forces. People come to tie black thread on the dog’s statue in the hope that their wishes would be fulfilled.
For many in and around Sikandrabad, the temple is more than just a shrine. It’s a symbol of loyalty and love. It holds stories of hope, giving comfort to those who believe in the bond between man and his most faithful friend.

Supreme court: Cops haven’t lost anything due to BSF jurisdiction change | India News

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Friday asked the Punjab government how its policing functions were affected by the 2021 decision of the Union government to increase BSF’s concurrent jurisdiction to deal with cognisable offences from 15km to 50km of the international border, reports Dhananjay Mahapatra.
“Nothing is taken away from Punjab police. The power to investigate is still with the state police,” said a bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. However, since it is an original suit filed by a state against the Union government, the bench said it has to hear it in detail.
Solicitor general Tushar Mehta said under the BSF Act, this armed force was given powers since 1969 to arrest persons acting in contravention of laws relating to border in an area which varied from 80km in Gujarat, to 50km for Rajasthan, 15km for Punjab, West Bengal and Assam and extended to the entire state of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Jammu and Kashmir.
In 2021, a uniformity in area of jurisdiction of BSF was brought in by which it was allowed to exercise powers under criminal procedure code for areas falling within 50km of the border, Mehta said.
The AAP government alleged the increase in jurisdiction seriously impaired the police functions, which is the exclusive domain of the state government.

9 channels with 83 lakh subscribers busted, says PIB fact check unit | India News

NEW DELHI: The information and broadcasting ministry’s PIB Fact Check Unit on Friday said it had “busted” nine YouTube channels with a cumulative 83 lakh subscribers for misattributing derogatory statements to the Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister and the chief election commissioneramong others.
The channels had disseminated false information, including claims that President’s rule had been imposed in certain states, electronic voting machines (EVMs) had been banned, and Union ministers had resigned or died.Instances offake news included ban on Rs 200 and Rs 500 currency notes, closures of banks, and false information related to government schemes and policies. They also pertained to false claims related to natural disasters and deaths of Indian citizens, deployment of armed forces, and closure of schools.
The incidents, sources said, led to concerns over YouTube allowing an ecosystem where fake news was being monetised and clickbait and sensational false thumbnails were being used to drive traffic.
As a consequence of such false information, the GDP Fact Check Unit said it identified nine YouTube channels – GTV, Bajrang Education, Aapke Guruji, BJ News, Sansani Live TV, Daily Study, Bharat Ekta News, Ab Bolega Bharat and Sarkari Yojana Official – which were using thumbnails and images of TV news channels and their news anchors to mislead viewers into believing that the news shared by them was authentic.
Though there was no word from the government on whether the channels will be taken down, the government fact checker said it has, since December 2022, “exposed” 26 YouTube channels that regularly showed false information. Additionally, over 120 YouTube channels have been blocked by the I&B ministry under provisions of the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
