Cross-Examination: UBT MLAs Cross-Examination Concludes | Next Hearing in Nagpur | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The cross examination of Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Sunil Prabhu in the Shiv Sena MLAs disqualification case ended on Saturday. Prabhu answered a total of 318 questions and his cross examination lasted almost a week.
The Shinde faction lawyers began cross examination of the Shiv Sena’s legislature office secretary Vijay Joshi. On Saturday, the Uddhav faction claimed that the key email sent to Eknath Shinde June 23, 2022, was sent on this official email id which was mentioned in the MLAs address book. The next round ofhearing will begin on December 7 and 8 in Nagpur when the winter session of the state legislature begins. In Nagpur, statements of Shinde faction MLAs Bharat Gogawle, Deepak Kesarkar, Uday Samant, Yogesh Kadam, Dilip Lande and MP Rahul Shewale will be recorded. They will then be cross examined by the Uddhav faction lawyers. With the winter session on, hearings will be conducted in the afternoon.
The Shinde faction had filed an application before Speaker Rahul Narwekar on Thursday seeking an inquiry into what it said was the Thackeray group’s submission of forged and fabricated documents. The Shinde faction’s application also referred to an email sent by the Uddhav faction to Shinde on June 23, 2022, which contained a letter dated June 22, 2022. The letter, which Prabhu first claimed was sent via WhatsApp, but then said it was via email, stated that despite clear notice, Shinde did not care to attend the party meeting and that he had engaged in anti-party activities detrimental to the interests of Shiv Sena. The Shinde faction claimed that on scrutiny of email, which was allegedly issued by some employee working with Shiv Sena to eknath.shinde@gmail.com, it was found that this email ID never belonged to Shinde.
Prabhu submitted the legislature’s address book before Narwekar. Uddhav faction lawyers said that the Shinde faction was showing the record book for the month of January, but the book published in May was not shown. The Uddhav faction claimed that on the very first page, the same email id of Eknath Shinde is given, where the notice was sent via email.
The SC has asked Narwekar to decide cross-petitions of Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde factions seeking disqualification of 54 MLAs by December 31, and the NCP’s plea to terminate the membership of 41 MLAs of the Ajit Pawar group by January 31, all involving alleged infraction of the anti-defection law. On Thursday, the Shinde faction had demanded that Narwekar issue directions to an investigative agency to initiate detailed inquiry with respect to documents tendered in evidence by Uddhav faction.

India vs Australia, 5th T20I: Another chance to test Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy skills | Cricket News

BENGALURU: A five-match T20I series a mere four days after the World Cup final has raised questions about scheduling and relevance, but look deeper and its significance is apparent. With a little over six months to go for the next ICC T20 World Cup, this series is about reinforcing faith in the many talented reinforcements available in the Indian camp.
Be it Ruturaj Gaikwad as an opener or Rinku Singh as the middle-order finisher, they have been on the path of meeting expectations. On the bowling front, although ignored for the impending series against South Africa, spinner Axar Patel has made a statement of intent, while leggie Ravi Bishnoi has justified his selection. Overall, the second-string team — coached by National Cricket Academy chief VVS Laxman — has given a good account of itself. With three consecutive scores of 200-plus (209, 235, 222) they have signalled the readiness of the line-up comprising Yashasvi Jaiswal, Gaikwad, Tilak Varma and Rinku to stake claims for a regular slot in the team and shoulder responsibilities on a bigger stage.
Outlining the team’s thought process, skipper Suryakumar Yadavafter the 20-run win in Raipur on Friday night, said, “The boys showed character and that was most important for us. We spoke in the meeting before the game to go out and express ourselves and be fearless.”
After this series, India play six T20Is against South Africa (away) and Afghanistan (home), which will give head coach Rahul Dravid and his think-tank an opportunity to firm up the squad ahead of the World Cup in June.

Prev-gfx

The fifth and final fixture will be played at the M Chinnaswamy stadium here on Sunday. With the hosts having already claimed the series with an unassailable 3-1 lead, the contest may be a dead rubber, but of immense academic interest for the team management.
The match offers another chance to test Suryakumar’s acumen as captain. The 33-year-old, who will marshall the team in the format in South Africa, is a captaincy prospect for the World Cup.
Hardik Pandya, who took over T20 captaincy from Rohit Sharma in 2022, had led India in six outings, winning five with one being abandoned. But the allrounder, who sustained an ankle injury while stopping a ball during a league fixture against Bangladesh in the World Cup in October, is likely to be out of action for at least another two months. That means his possible return to competitive action will be in the IPL, which casts doubts on his preparations for leading India at the showpiece event.

Rohit, who last played a T20I at the World Cup last year and has been rested for the white-ball fixtures of the South Africa tour, has offered no public clarity on his future in white-ball cricket, which further pushes Suryakumar’s case.
India’s ICC trophy drought has stretched to 10 and a half years now, and this may well be the pathway to ending that.

Salman Butt: Spot-fixing accused Salman Butt's consultancy role abruptly withdrawn by PCB chief selector

NEW DELHI: Former international cricketer Salman Butt‘s appointment as a consultant to chief selector Wahab Riaz by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was abruptly revoked a day after the announcement, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
Chief selector Riaz called an urgent press conference on Saturday to officially declare the immediate withdrawal of Butt’s name from the consultancy panel.
Butt, who had represented Pakistan in both red-ball and white-ball formats, had recently been appointed to provide consulting insights to the selection panel.
However, Butt’s past involvement in a spot-fixing incident during a Test against England at Lord’s in 2010 had stirred controversy around his appointment.
Reportedly, there was internal resistance within the PCB regarding Butt’s consultancy role, with an unnamed employee expressing discomfort and even threatening resignation.
Facing mounting internal pressure and criticism, Riaz decided to clarify the situation through a press conference, confirming Butt’s prompt removal from the selection panel.
On Friday, the PCB had initially named former players Kamran Akmal, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, and Salman Butt as consultants to the chief selector. The appointments were to take effect immediately, with their first assignment being the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, scheduled to begin on January 12 after the ongoing overseas tour of Australia.
The consultants were brought on board with the aim of leveraging their experience to help the team replicate the success achieved in the last T20 World Cup. However, Salman Butt’s sudden removal from the role has added an unexpected twist to the PCB’s selection strategy.

Congress: It's matter of a few hours now: MP home minister Narottam Mishra ahead of counting of votes | India News

New Delhi (India), December 3 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra has exuded his confidence in his party- Bharatiya Janata Party winning the elections and said that the BJP will form the government in the state with the majority.
“We will win 125-150 seats in the state. BJP will form a government in the state. It is a matter of a few hours now,” Mishra said.
The counting of votes of assembly elections held in Madhya Pradesh on November 17 began at 8 am on Sunday.
The Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections were held on November 17, 2023, to elect all 230 members of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Voting was carried out in a single phase.
Most exit-poll projections released on Thursday put the BJP in the lead, with the Congress seen to be coming up short and not cashing in on the ‘anti-incumbency’ as they had hoped to. Some exit pollshowever, gave an advantage to the Congress party.
Madhya Pradesh has been a BJP stronghold for the last twenty years, barring the 15-month tenure of the Kamal Nath-led government when Congress came to power in 2018.
Meanwhile, Jitu Patwari, a Congress leader took a swipe at the BJP and said that the chaos created by the ruling party in Madhya Pradesh is about to ‘end’.
“…The kind of ‘Tandav’ the BJP had created by tearing apart the dignity of democracy, created a market of MLAs the country has seen. After all these circumstances, people have suffered the pain of inflation, unemployment, and diseases…The kind of chaos they have created in the country is about to end…,” Patwari said.
The BJP fought the poll under a largely collective leadership while Congress projected former Chief Minister Kamal Nath as its chief ministerial face.
According to the results of exit polls, the welfare schemes of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, referred to as “Mamaji” by people, along with that of the BJP government at the Centre seemed to have had an impact on the electorate in Madhya Pradesh which has a sizeable section of tribals and Dalits.
The last state assembly polls in 2018 saw the Congress coming to power, with Kamal Nath taking oath as the chief minister. Later, Jyotiraditya Scindia, along with 22 MLAs, switched over to the BJP and Chouhan again assumed office as Chief Minister of the state.
The state’s overall turnout hit a record high of 76.22 per cent for the 230-member Assembly this year, up from 74.97 per cent in 2018, when the Congress won but was toppled by defections just over a year later.
In the 2018 elections, BJP secured 109 seats, while BSP and SP won 2 and 1 seat(s) respectively.
Meanwhile, the poll results on Sunday will decide the political future of the state’s longest-serving Chouhan and his Congress challenger Kamal Nath besides that of some other senior leaders from both the parties.
Shivraj Chouhan assumed the role of Chief Minister in 2005 and was subsequently sworn in again in 2008 and 2013.

Heritage Building: Restoration of 125-Year-Old Heritage Building in Mumbai | WR HQ | Mumbai News

Mumbai: It was 125-years ago, a landmark came up in city’s skyline when the headquarter building of the then Bombay, Baroda and Central India (BB&CI) was opened. The Gothic style building, which along with other British-era structures provides south Mumbai its charm, is undergoing restoration ahead of its anniversary in January 2024.
To mark this occasion, Western Railway(WR), whose headquarter is this building, has planned a series of events befitting the occasion from next month.WR’s chief public relations officer Sumit Thakur said, “The building has pride of place not only on WR but also on Indian Railway. We are undertaking restoration of the 19th century building by cleaning the facade, removing the clutter and also provide theme-based lighting.”
WR has decided to spend around Rs 7 crore on this work that also includes painting of the entire building and the dome. He said, “We will upgrade the heritage gallery located on the ground floor. There will be addition of new heritage gallery on the third floor with a section dedicated to audio visual (AV).”
The restoration work also includes window-door restoration, replacement of rafters, polishing of all woodwork, etc.
The heritage building has been designed by legendary architect Federick Williams Steven, who was also the force behind the design of iconic Victoria Terminus building, later renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) building that houses the headquarters of Central Railway.
As noted in Anchoring a City Line by Rahul Mehrotra and Sharda Dwivedi, “Constrained by finance, Steven’s design for BB&CI offices was far less ambitious than that of Victoria Terminus (now CSMT) but is not less commendable. Stevens successfully blended the Venetian Gothic and Indian Saracenic styles, creating in the process a style adapted to the climate and environment of Bombay and the vantage site on which the building was constructed.”
The Times of India had in its February 10, 1894 edition, said, “The style chosen is early Gothic and an Oriental feeling and similar to character and detail to the surrounding public buildings and when the new structure is completed which is likely to be within the next three years, it will undoubtedly be one of the most attractive in the city of picturesque piles and will form an appropriate terminal to the Marine lines which is at some future date must be rebuilt.”
The building was built at an estimated cost of Rs 7.5 lakh. The work started in 1894 and was completed in 1899. Stevens had appointed Raosaheb Sitaram Khanderao Vaidya, as resident engineer, who had worked with him on Royal Alfred Sailor’s home, Victoria Terminus, Bombay Municipal Corporation Building and now BB&CI General Offices. His son Charles, who was known for Art Deco style buildings, had assisted him on the project. The building, underwent restoration, after a fire in November 1905 BB&CI hired Charles to undertake restoration work, which costs Rs 3 lakh.

Illegal Society: Illegal Society Has Till Dec 31 To Pay 79cr Or Vacate Plot | Ahmedabad News

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court has ordered residents of a housing society near Gulab Tower to deposit Rs 79 crore with the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda) by December 31 or the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will evict them from their 4,645 square metre plot.
A bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Aniruddha Mayee ordered that if occupants of Snehanjali Cooperative Housing Society fail to pay up, they are to be evicted from Final Plot 65 in Thaltej Town Planning Scheme No.2 and the plot should be handed over to Nidhi Cooperative Housing Society. However, if residents of Snehanjali Society do pay up, AMC will give possession of a 4,645 square metre plot to Nidhi Society at another place, Final Plot 100/E in the TP Scheme.
AMC valued Final Plot 100/E at Rs 79 crore at the rate of Rs 1.70 lakh per metre and asked Snehanjali Society to pay for it. Snehanjali Society’s land on Final Plot 65 was valued at Rs 1.38 lakh per square metre.
The HC directions came after two rounds of litigation in a two-decade battle between the societies, Auda and AMC.
The battle began with finalization of the Thaltej TP Scheme in 1996, after which Nidhi was to get three plots from Auda. While the society got possession of two plots, the third offered to it already had construction on it. Nidhi Society finally did not get a third final plot and moved the HC in 2003.
This was followed by a petition by Snehanjali Society in 2005. The HC directed Auda to give a final plot to Nidhi Society. Snehanjali Society did not succeed in the HC or Supreme Court, which held its construction illegal.
In 2009, Auda discussed the issue with both societies and in a tripartite agreement resolved that Auda would allot Nidhi Society a vacant 4,645 square metre plot, on Final Plot 100, and Snehanjali would bear the cost, Rs 3.21 crore. This did not materialize, leading Nidhi Society to move the HC again. Snehanjali Society, which had to pay Rs 3.21 crore in 2009, will now have to cough up Rs 79 crore by the end of this month to avoid eviction.
