Exposure to severe air pollution for long term a major cause of throat cancer: Doctors
Exposure to severe air pollution has been identified as a major cause of throat cancer. Non-smokers and non-tobacco chewers account for about 30% of the 80,000 annual cases of throat cancer in India. Air pollutants like particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide can damage throat cells and increase the risk of cancer. Chronic exposure to air pollution further exacerbates this risk. Early detection and treatment are crucial, and advancements like Narrow Band Imaging can detect throat cancer at early stages. Chronic acid reflux also plays a role in throat cancer development.

India vs Australia, 5th T20I: Bowlers come to party for India, help hosts defend modest total and win series 4-1 | Cricket News

BENGALURU: Australian cricket team’s 10-week Indian sojourn ended on Sunday and it felt like the home batsmen were determined to hand them a farewell gift. But the bowlers were clearly not in a generous mood. Led by a fine show by the bowlers led by young spinner Ravi Bishnoi (2/29), India pulled off a six-run win to wrap up the five-match T20 series 4-1 on Sunday.
India skipper Suryakumar lost the toss again and was invited to bat. After a series of misfires, India found saviours in Shreyas Iyer (53; 37b; 5×4; 2×6) and cameo stars Jitesh Sharma (24) and Axar Patel (31). Restricted to 160/8, India defended the total as Australia finished with 154/8. At one point, the away side were relatively untroubled in the chase with Ben McDermott (54; 36b) having a go at the bowlers. But Indian pacers turned on the heat in the 14th over and Mukesh Kumar (3/32) with twin strikes of Matthew Short and Ben Dwarshuis in the 17th over changed the course of the match. Also, Mukesh bowled a seven-run miserly penultimate over and Arshdeep defended the 10 runs required of the last over.
The aspirational Indian batting line-up, which in the previous four matches had exhibited a brand of cricket which offered promise and showcased potential, failed to turn up. Instead, most of them looked at sea on a tricky surface which was slow and testing. It was a test of skill and application and the top and middle order, barring Iyer, failed to pass the test.

Report-gfx-2

The openers – Yashasvi Jaiswal (21) and Rituraj Gaikwad (10) – played contrasting innings on a surface which was unlike the typical belter the venue offers. Gaikwad struggled to find the gaps and a slow outfield due to rain and overcast conditions didn’t help the cause either.
In contrast, Jaiswal heaved a massive maximum off Hardie over midwicket to warm-up for what could have been an innings which could have gone deep into the night. The southpaw, after smashing Jason Behrendorff (2/38) for a six and four, miscued a short ball high into the sky which didn’t go the distance and was taken with precision by Nathan Ellis.
Gaikwad joined Jaiswal in the dressing room after just three deliveries. Looking to break free, Gaikwad picked a delivery from Dwarshuis to hit it down the ground, but failed to get elevation or distance and ended up offering Behrendorff a regulation catch.

Report-gfx-1

Suryakumar’s (5) dry run with willow in Raipur spilled over to Bengaluru. He was dropped by Ben McDermott, off the second ball he faced. But the big-hitting skipper failed to make use of the lifeline, with his attempted cut resulting in a low catch to McDermott.
At the other end, Iyer was unaffected by the chaos. With the scoreboard reading 46/3 in seven overs, it was imperative that Iyer mixed caution with aggression. For a couple of overs after Suryakumar’s dismissal runs dried up. Instead of throwing his bat at every delivery, Iyer, after spending 12 deliveries rotating strike, picked out Dwarshuis to up the momentum.

RBI: RBI Interest Rate Pause: MPC Meeting on December 8 | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The RBI is expected to announce a continuation of its pause on interest rates after the bi-monthly review meeting of the monetary policy committee (MPC) scheduled for December 8.
Analysts predict a fifth consecutive pause by the MPC because of stronger-than-expected economic growthnumbers. RBI will likely maintain a cautious stance, accompanied by hawkish rhetoric.
The positive surprise in the July-September quarter GDP growth has bolstered confidence in RBI’s focus on sustaining economic growth. Despite concerns about potential food price shocks affecting inflation expectations, the central bank may find solace in moderating core inflation.
Rahul Bajoria, an economist at Barclays, suggests a shift in RBI’s focus from rate-setting to other monetary policy instruments. “RBI’s focus now seems to be on using other instruments in its monetary policy toolkit, including liquidity management and macroprudential measures, to facilitate the transmission of earlier rate hikes and to curb risky lending behaviour, respectively,” said Bajoria.
While the absence of a rate hike is favourable for those with home loans and other borrowers, they may have to wait until after the general elections for a rate cut. Besides interest rates, RBI is also expected to announce development measures in its policy for promoting the use of central bank digital currency (CBDC).
Last month, to slow down growth in the unsecured personal loan segment, RBI had hiked capital requirements for both banks directly lending to this segment and lending to finance companies focusing on this sector.
Besides retail, much of the growth is driven by government investment in infrastructure, which reduces the risks for lenders. However, there is some risk build-up here as well. “We have seen instances where an EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) company raised money at the holding company level to invest as equity in the operating company,” said an official with a rating agency.
Radhika Rao, an economist with DBS Bank, anticipates that the MPC will defer any changes to its policy stance in the upcoming review and sees more prudential measures. “Instead, the authorities are likely to focus on gradually withdrawing incremental liquidity and undertake a targeted approach via macroprudential measures as demonstrated by the recent move to tighten risk weights on consumer loans,” said Rao.
Abhishek Upadhyay, an economist at ICICI Securities PD, highlights the robust growth momentum and well-behaved core inflation as factors supporting the anticipated pause. Suman Chowdhury, chief economist and head of research at Acuite Ratings & Research, foresees a sustained pause with potential inflationary pressures, especially if El Nino weather events impact food inflation.
Economists also expect the MPC to address the slowdown in monetary transmission, emphasising the necessity for a “withdrawal of accommodation” amid deficit liquidity conditions.

Officials: Male talks on to keep Indian platforms operational | India News

NEW DELHI: Amid question marks over the use of Indian naval choppers by Maldives, PM Modi briefly discussed the issue with President Mohamed Muizzu on the margins of COP28 climate summit in Dubai. The core group, which the two leaders had decided to form in what was their first bilateral meeting to enhance bilateral ties, will look into the issue, according to government sources.
Muizzu has asked the Indian government to pull out all military personnel from Maldives involved in operating & maintaining the two choppers and a Dornier aircraftthat India gifted to the country.According to Indian government, Muizzu acknowledged the role played by the choppers in facilitating medical evacuation and agreed to find a workable solution for their continued operations.
However, Muizzu was quoted as saying on Sunday that India had agreed to withdraw its soldiers in the bilateral meeting he had with Modi. Following his remarks, Indian government sources denied this, saying discussions were still on to keep “Indian platforms” operational.
According to Indian sources, the two leaders “briefly discussed” the issue in Dubai. Modi apparently emphasised on the significance of their continued operations in the interest of the local people. “The continued usefulness of Indian platforms as it was recognised in discussions needs to be looked at in a proper perspective,” said the source.

Hooch Tragedy: For 2 years, Gujarat cops failed to smell a rat in 'laal bottle' | Ahmedabad News

AHMEDABAD: In the Bilodara village hooch tragedysix people have died so far and three are under treatment after consuming methanol-laced herbal syrup from a village grocery shop in the last week of November. However, it was not the case that the sale of the hooch sealed in a bottle as an ayurvedic syrup took place in Bilodara recently. According to sources, the intoxicating drink – popular among the villagers as ‘red bottle‘ (red bottle) – was being sold for at least two years.
Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic when lockdown and subsequent curfews were the order of the day, laal bottle was introduced in Bilodara village of Kheda in 2020 as an option to country-made alcohol. As only emergency services were active then, these bottles were being transported in the garb of medical remedies.
As it tasted almost like liquor, the laal bottle was widely accepted in the village at a price of Rs 130 a piece. Even people from nearby villages used to visit Bilodara to buy laal bottle, labelled as ‘Kal Meghasav Arishta’, said a senior police officer.
But no actions were taken all through these years and police swung into action only after five people died on November 28 and 29. The death toll has now increased to six. A man named Vipul Sodha from Sojali village of Mahemdavad died on Saturday in Nadiad Civil Hospital.
Police said that two men wanted in a similar case in Rajkot – Nitin Kotwani and Bhavesh Sevkani from Vadodara – were the suppliers who mixed industrial alcohol, methanol, in the bottle.
Three men who had the first sip found it “Kharab Damaniyo Maal (a slang for poor quality liquor in Gujarat)” and threw it. They are the prime witnesses in the case, said an officer.
“The three men used to buy the bottles from the grocery store of Kishore Sodha, one of the accused. Another man, Amit Sodha, who worked at Kishore’s shop also had a sip from a laal bottle on November 27 and discarded it after finding its taste a bit different. He has also become a witness in the case,” said a senior police officer.
Kheda SP Rajesh Gadhia said that Kotwani and Sevkani were booked by Rajkot police in August this year for selling alcoholic drinks in the name of ayurvedic preparations. They are still absconding in Bilodara’s case, he said, adding that several teams are working to trace their whereabouts.

PM Thanks: PM Modi thanks 'behnon', signals 'naari shakti' role in BJP's victory. India News

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday thanked the people of Telangana in a special way for supporting the BJP, which improved its seat tally to eight seats and vote-share to 13.9%. In a tweet to convey his gratitude, Modi swapped the usual salutation ‘bhaiyon aur behnon’ (brothers and sisters) for ‘behnon aur bhaiyon’, reflecting the BJP’s focused outreach to women, mindful of how their turnout at polling stations has surpassed male voter participation in many a recent poll.
Women outnumbered men in pressing the electronic voting machine (EVM) button in Chhattisgarh in the current polls; and the female voter turnout (women who voted as a percentage of total enrolled women electors) beat male voting percentage in both Telangana and Rajasthan. In MP, female voter turnout with EVMs, not counting the postal ballots, improved by two percentage points as compared to 2018 and 32 of the state’s 230 constituencies saw a higher women’s polling percentage.
The crucial support from women was duly acknowledged by the PM in his victory speech after the poll results, which saw BJP clock impressive wins in three states, even as Telangana went the Congress way. He said women were among the only four ‘castes’, the others being youths, farmers and the poor, whose empowerment would strengthen the country.
“Women believe only the BJP can guarantee their security, safety and dignity…I want to assure women that all promises made to them will be fulfilled 100%,” said Modi.

Both BJP and Congress had tried to woo women voters in the latest round of assembly polls. While BJP had offered cheaper LPG cylinders at Rs 450 each, higher benefits under schemes like Laadli Behna and free education upto post-gradu- ation for poor girls, Congress promised to provide Rs 1,500 per month as income support for women and gas cylinders at Rs 500 each, if elected to power.
Atotal of 78.1 lakh women voted in Chhattisgarh in the just-concluded polls, surpassing the state’s 77.4 lakh male voters who got inked. The absolute number of women who voted was higher than that of male voters in 50 of Chhattisgarh’s 90 assembly constituencies. The female voter turnout too exceeded the male voter turnout in 27 constituencies of the state. All but one among the 20 Naxal-hit constituencies that went to polls in the first phase saw more women voting then men; the BJP has won in 11 of these 20 seats.
In Rajasthan, not only was the women’s turnout at 74.7% higher than the 74.5% male voters’ turnout, but also the women’s polling percentage beat men’s in 88 or nearly 50% of the state’s 199 assembly constituencies.
Telangana witnessed its female voting percentage at 71.6% surpassing the 71.1% male turnout.
In MP, the overall turnout improved to 77.1% (based on votes cast on EVMs) from 74.9% in 2018. Female turnout in the BJP-ruled state went up to around 76% this time from 74% in 2018, while the corresponding rise in male voter turnout was from 75.8% to78.2%.

PM Modi, Amit Shah injected renewed vigour into Chhattisgarh campaign

Ishwar Sahu, a political greenhorn, resonated powerfully with voters and secured a significant win over Congressminister Ravindra Choubey by over 5,000 votes. Congress, confident in its substantial majority of 71 MLAs, was stunned by the final score. Most ministers lost, and even CM Bhupesh Baghel trailed for a few rounds on his home turf Patan. Congress wasn’t expecting defeat.A close fight, perhaps, but not a rout.
An example of how laid back Congress was is its reaction — or lack of it — to BJP’s promise of a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000 to every married woman. It was a full nine days before the state leadership woke up and decided to match it following requests from party candidates and local leaders. Baghel announced an allowance of Rs 1,250 for all women, regardless of marital status or age, just four days before the elections, but party workers struggled to effectively communicate the scheme. BJP workers had by then diligently collected forms from nearly 50 lakh women.
Baghel, pushed into a three-way fight by JCC’s Amit Jogi, survived a seesaw battle and won Patan by 19,723 votes. Deputy chief minister T S Singhdeo, who had got into a public tussle with Baghel in 2021, played catch-up all day and lost to BJP’s Rajesh Agrawal by only 94 votes. Congress faced a complete rout in Surguja region, Singhdeo’s turf in north Chhattisgarh.
Even BJP workers weren’t expecting a victory until PM Modi and Shah’s arrival injected renewed vigour into the party’s campaign, galvanising the foot soldiers.
BJP took an early lead and maintained its momentum throughout the day in most constituencies. Raman Singh won a thumping victory in Rajnandgaon by 45,084 votes. BJP state president Arun Sao won Lormi by 75,070 votes.
