TikTok may be back in India 5 years after ban: Website opens but app unavailable

Tiktok website is live in India. After a five-year absence, the Chinese short video app TikTok has sparked excitement among its former Indian user base. The platform’s website has become accessible for some users in India, leading to widespread speculation of a potential comeback. However, the app remains unavailable on Google Play Store and App Store, and there is no statement from the company regarding a return.Notably, the move is not without its caveats. While some users have reported being able to access the website, others on X say it remains blocked. When the members of the Times of India tech team checked, they were able to access the homepage but not any other page. When clicked on “Newsroom” a message flashes saying, “You don’t have access to this page Our services aren’t available in your country or region.” Additionally, a click on “Careers” returns “503 Service Temporarily Unavailable” message.

Why India banned TikTok in 2020

The development has reignited conversations around the 2020 ban. The government initially blocked TikTok along with 58 other Chinese apps, including Shareit and CamScanner, citing national security concerns. The Ministry of Electronics and IT stated that the apps were “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.”Meanwhile, TikTok is also facing a ban in the US. However, President Donald Trump has said that he has American buyers ready to acquire TikTok, and he is open to extending the deadline for its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app’s US assets. The company is also laying off several employees in the UK and said that this move is part of a “reorganisation” to centralise its operations and increase its reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) for moderation.

Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo has signed an eight-year, $67 million contract extension with the team, just days after making his Major League Baseball debut. The deal, reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan on August 22, 2025, includes a club option and could reach up to $88.5 million with performance incentives. This contract is the largest pre-arbitration extension ever given to a catcher.

Samuel Basallo signs eight-year $67 million extension with Orioles

Samuel Basallo from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, aged 21, was called up to the Orioles Triple-A Norfolk team on August 17 2025. During his first MLB gam,e Basallo achieved his initial major league base hit against the Houston Astros. Before his promotion, he had a great Triple-A performance, batting .270 with 23 home runs and 67 RBIs over 76 games. Signing Basallo to a long-term contract demonstrates the Orioles’ faith in his future role as a vital member of the team.Samuel Basallo, who combines power-hitting ability with defensive talent, will play a major role in the Orioles’ lineup throughout the upcoming seasons. Also Read: “F**K You P**Sy”: Jarren Duran Caught On Broadcast Yelling At Fan After Key Strikeout In Boston Red Sox Loss To Orioles

Adley Rutschman’s role uncertain as Samuel Basallo rises in majors

Samuel Basallo’s arrival adds catching depth for the Orioles, perhaps affecting the position of Adley Rutschman, the team’s present starting catcher. Including ongoing oblique strains, Rutschman has battled injuries in past years. His most recent run on the injured list raises questions regarding his future with the squad.Given Samuel Basallo’s encouraging start in the majors, the Orioles could investigate several lineup setups, including rotating both catchers or employing one as a designated hitter. The team’s management will have to determine the best strategy to fully use the abilities of both players while keeping up team performance. Adding Samuel Basallo on a long-term deal shows a dedication to creating a competitive team based on emerging young talent as the Orioles keep shaping their roster.

'This math isn't mathing': Aakash Chopra questions RCB's influence on Rajat Patidar's MP captaincy, sparks debate
RCB Captain Rajat Patidar with Virat Kohli

NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has triggered a storm of debate on social media after questioning comments made by Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, regarding Rajat patidar’s rise as a captain.RCB’s decision to appoint Patidar as their new skipper ahead of the IPL 2025 season was a ‘surprise’ to many. However, Bobat, speaking to Cricbuzz, revealed that talks around Patidar’s leadership role began midway through the 2024 season.

‘We will try and win this for Virat Kohli’: Rajat Patidar before IPL Final

Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!“Actually, if I’m totally honest, the thought on Rajat was even earlier than what people might have thought. Midway through the 2024 season, I first spoke to him about captaincy and leadership,” Bobat said.

Poll

Do you agree with Aakash Chopra’s view on RCB’s influence over state cricket captaincy?

The RCB official further disclosed that he encouraged Patidar to seek captaincy opportunities at the state level. “I did say: ‘Look, for you to even be an option or one of our senior leaders, it’d be good if you did some captaincy. So, go to your seniors, see if they’d be prepared to make you captain, even if it’s just for white-ball cricket. Then let’s see how it goes,’” Bobat added.Patidar soon spoke to Madhya Pradesh coach Chandrakant Pandit and was named MP captain, later leading them to the final of the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. But Bobat’s remarks left Chopra stunned. The former India batter took to X and wrote: “A franchise can’t possibly ‘nudge’ someone to lead in ‘domestic cricket’. Right? One could understand if someone is a seasoned State Team captain and is asked to continue (in case, he’s offered the captaincy by the state team again). Rajat was a first-time skipper at MP. This math isn’t mathing.”Chopra’s post has since sparked widespread debate on whether IPL franchises should have any influence on state cricket captaincy decisions. While RCB might have found their leader in Patidar and they won their maiden IPL title, Chopra’s sharp remark has ensured the discussion around the ethics of such influence is far from over.

'Entire country knows he steals votes': Rahul Gandhi's big charge on PM Modi; Bihar yatra reaches Bhagalpur

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday mounted a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led NDA government, accusing them of attempting ‘vote theft’ in Bihar and betraying the country’s youth with policies that ‘destroy employment opportunities.’Addressing a massive public rally in Bhagalpur during the ongoing ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’, Gandhi alleged that the Modi government and the Election Commission were working together to snatch away citizens’ constitutional right to vote.“The SIR is an attempt by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP and the EC to steal your votes. They are trying their best to snatch your voting rights. The ‘vote chor’ came to Gayaji, but he did not say even a word on his government’s attempt to steal votes with the help of the EC,” Gandhi said.He alleged that though PM Modi visited Bihar earlier in the day, he remained silent on alleged irregularities in the Maharashtra and Karnataka elections as well as the crisis in Manipur. He attacked Modi for maintaining “silence” on irregularities in elections. “The SIR is an attempt by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP and the EC to steal your votes. They are trying their best to snatch your voting rights. The ‘vote chor’ came to Gayaji, but he did not say even a word on his government’s attempt to steal votes with the help of the EC,” the Congress leader said. Invoking the Constitution, Gandhi said all citizens are equal and every person has one vote, but alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission are attacking it by canceling votes. He cited the case of a voter who told him his vote was canceled by the EC after he had voted for Congress in the Lok Sabha elections.“Constitution guarantees equal rights to everyone; but PM and EC are snatching people’s right to vote,” he alleged. The leader of opposition also accused the Modi government of pushing the youth into despair. “Young people study for months to get a job, then take exams. But… on the day of the exam, the paper gets leaked. The situation is such that the youth cannot find employment in this state”.Lashing out at the Agniveer scheme, Gandhi said the government had ended secure jobs in the armed forces. “Earlier, millions of our youth used to join the army. They protected the country, received pensions, and were taken care of. Today, an Agniveer has lost his hand, but no help is being provided to him. He has been removed from his job and sent back home.”Gandhi also recalled demonetisation, GST and the now-repealed farm laws, alleging that every measure of this government is anti-poor.During the rally, Gandhi said that even attempts to suppress the yatra by cutting electricity would fail. “Here, they have cut off the electricity, thinking that cutting the power will silence the voice, but the voice does not stop in the darkness; it is heard.” he remarked. The Bhagalpur event marked the sixth day of the 1,300-km, 16-day yatra launched on August 17, which will pass through more than 20 districts of Bihar before concluding with a rally at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan on September 1.Congress leaders from Karnataka will also be joining the yatra. Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar will walk with Gandhi over the weekend in Katihar district, while chief minister Siddaramaiah will join on August 29.

US wants no truck with foreign drivers, suspends visas

US wants no truck with foreign drivers, suspends visas

The TOI correspondent from Washington: Truckin’, I’m a goin’ home/ Whoa whoa baby, back where I belong/ Back home, sit down and patch my bones/ And get back truckin’ on. When the folksy rock band Grateful Dead wrote these lyrics in 1970 for their hit song Truckin, they couldn’t possibly have had truck drivers from India on their mind. But thousands of Indian truckers may be headed home and thousands more won’t be coming to America anytime soon after the Trump administration on Thursday suspended issuance of worker visas for foreign commercial truck drivers following a fatal accident in which an undocumented Sikh truck driver from India who entered US illegally made an unlawful u-turn on a Florida highway, resulting in the death of three Americans. The driver, identified as Harjinder Singh, later flunked English fluency and road sign tests, answering only two out of 12 questions correctly in English and identifying only one out of four highway signs shown to him, according to the US Department of Transportation. He was brought to Florida on Thursday to face vehicular homicide charges, and his brother Harneet Singh, who was a co-passenger in the truck and is also said to be undocumented, was also arrested. The incident has triggered yet another political row between Democrat-run California, which gave Harjinder a driving license, and the Trump administration, which blamed the state’s sanctuary policies for the accident and alleged foreign truck drivers were endangering American lives and jobs.“Effective immediately we are pausing all issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers. The increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on US roads is endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a post on X in yet another immigration crackdown that was cheered by MAGA nativists. Sikh advocacy groups estimate there are approximately 150,000 to 200,000 Sikhs working in the trucking industry, with around 90% (135,000 to 180,000) being drivers. They constitute about 18% of the total truck drivers in the US and up to 40% are based in California. The entry of Punjabi Sikhs into the US trucking industry, which goes back decades, began ticking up in the 1980s due to the insurgency in Punjab, when asylum-seeking Sikhs hooked up with their forbears, among the first immigrants from India on the west coast, to hit the road in America. What was a trickle turned into a flood around 2018, attracted by the low barrier to entry, both at the Mexican border and in the industry, which at that time was also facing a driver shortage. The nature of the job, which often involves long hours alone on the road, allowed for a high degree of personal and religious freedom to the mostly turban-wearing Sikhs. The handsome pay ($70,000 for beginners to $ 144,000 for owner operators), without the need for college degree or extensive qualifications attracted many, fueling illegal crossings at the Mexican border, a route than Harjinder Singh is reported to have taken. There was another catch though: the lack of fluency in English and non-adherence to road signs, endemic in India, could be fatal — as it turned out with Harjinder. The White House flagged this issue in April this year when President Trump signed an executive order that sought to “ensure all commercial vehicle operators in the United States are proficient English speakers,” following up on an earlier order in March seeking to establish English as the official language. Sikh advocacy groups protested the order, contending that it could have a “discriminatory impact on Sikh truck drivers and create unnecessary barriers to employment for qualified individuals.Still, many Sikhs have aced English over the years, and combined with their entrepreneurial spirit, have graduated from entry-level drivers to owners, sometimes of large fleets. Among them are Gurmeet Malhi, of Primelink Express in California, a large transportation company, and Raman Dhillon, who is also founder and CEO of the North American Punjabi Trucking Association (NAPTA). One of the more storied characters chronicled extensively in the regional media is Mintu Pandher, who has built a fleet of rigs and a truck stop (Akal Travel Center) in Laramie, Wyoming, including a gurdwara and a dhaba which is now a must-stop not just for truckers of all hues, but also locals.

Security escalation: US defence secretary arms National Guard in DC; Trump warns of full federal takeover

National Guard troops deployed across Washington, DC for US President Donald Trump’s law enforcement crackdown will now carry weapons, the Pentagon announced on Friday. The development marks another major crackdown by the MAGA chief, which he claims is aimed at curbing crime, poverty, and homelessness in one of the major blue states, signalling a sharp escalation in security measures.US defence secretary Pete Hegseth issued the order, though the Pentagon did not provide immediate details on why the decision was taken or what additional measures might follow. This development comes as nearly 2,000 National Guard members remain stationed in the city, including hundreds of troops sent in this week from Republican-led states.Until last week, both the Pentagon and Army had said that troops would not be armed while patrolling the streets. However, plans for the National Guard to carry weapons had been communicated to city officials earlier this week, according to a source familiar with the discussions. The person, who was not authorised to speak publicly, shared the information on the condition of anonymity. Before the announcement, Trump took to Truth Social and said: “Washington, D.C. is SAFE AGAIN! The crowds are coming back, the spirit is high, and our D.C. National Guard and Police are doing a fantastic job. They are out in force, and are NOT PLAYING GAMES!!! As bad as it sounds to say, there were no murders this week for the first time in memory. Mayor Muriel Bowser must immediately stop giving false and highly inaccurate crime figures, or bad things will happen, including a complete and total Federal takeover of the City! Washington DC will soon be great again!!!”

Life after resignation: Where is Jagdeep Dhankhar? Playing table tennis, practicing yoga

NEW DELHI: As the opposition is busy guessing former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s whereabouts, he is keeping himself busy playing table tennis and practicing yoga, news agency PTI reported.Almost a month after he abruptly resigned from his post after the first day of Monsoon session, people in the know of his routine said he is regularly practising yoga and plays table tennis with his well-wishers and staff members at the Vice-President’s enclave.“Even after returning from tours, he used to play table tennis with his staff members,” a person told PTI.This comes as the opposition pointed out that there had been no news about Dhankhar since the day he resigned citing health conditions. They also urged Union home minister Amit Shah to reassure the public about the former Vice-President’s well-being at the earliest.“On July 22, Jagdeep Dhankhar, our Vice President, resigned, and it is August 9 today, and since that day, we just do not know where he is. He is not in his official residence. On the first day, I tried to contact him and his personal secretary picked up the phone and said he is resting,” Kapil Sibal had said.“So, I have heard of ‘Laapataa Ladies’ but I have never heard of a ‘laapataa Vice President’,” he added, referencing the Kiran Rao directorial, which was India’s official entry to the Oscars. “What should we do? Should we file a habeas corpus?” he added.Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation as Vice President citing health reasons, with two years remaining in his five-year term, sparked intense speculation and conspiracy theories.Dhankhar is only the third Vice President to resign before completing his term, after V. V. Giri and R. Venkataraman. His unexpected exit on the first day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session has left political observers searching for deeper explanations beyond “health reasons”.Meanwhile, the Election Commission has announced that polling for the Vice Presidential election will take place on September 9, with counting of votes scheduled for the same day. The last date for filing nominations is August 21, while withdrawals can be made until August 25.The National Democratic Alliance has named Maharashtra governor CP Radhakrishnan as its nominee. World's oldest living person just turned 116 years old: Shares 1 secret that helped her live a long and happy life, and no it's not any diet or exercise routine

Ethel Caterham was born on August 21, 1909, in a village in Hampshire, England. That was three years before the Titanic sank and eight years before the Russian Revolution. Today, she is the world’s oldest living person at 116, as officially recognised by Guinness World Recordsfollowing the passing of Brazilian nun Sister Inah Canabarro earlier this year. Her life has spanned two world wars, six different monarchs in the United Kingdom, and 27 prime ministers. From the Edwardian era to the age of artificial intelligence, Caterham has witnessed history unfold in ways few can even imagine.

Senior Living in India– Myths, Realities & the Future of Purposeful Ageing

The secret she swears by: “Never argue”Unlike the usual long lists of dietary restrictions or exercise routines generally linked to longevity, Caterham’s mantra is quite simple:“Never arguing with anyone, I listen and I do what I like,” she once told the Associated Press. This philosophy of staying agreeable and stress-free, she believes, has kept her both mentally at ease and physically strong. Medical experts highlight the harmful effects of chronic stress on the heart and brain, and Caterham’s refusal to engage in conflict seems to echo this truth in the most human way possible. She has also spoken in the past about embracing opportunities with an open mind and living life with moderation. That outlook, paired with her calm approach to conflict, appears to be the cornerstone of her remarkable journey.

A journey across continents

Ethel Caterham

Meet Ethel Caterham, 115-year-old British, who has an Indian connection.

At the age of 18, Caterham left England for India, taking up work as a nanny for a British family. It was 1927, and international travel for a young woman then was far from common. Three years later, she returned home and met her husband Norman at a dinner party.Norman, a major in the British Army, took her to Hong Kong and Gibraltar during his postings. In Hong Kong, Caterham even established a nursery where she taught English and crafts to children. Later, the couple settled back in the UK and raised two daughters, Gem and Anne. Norman passed away in 1976, and both daughters have since also passed on.Longevity seems to run in Caterham’s family. One of her elder sisters, Gladys Babilas, lived to be 104. Today, Caterham herself is a grandmother to three and a great-grandmother to five. Despite surviving the highs and lows of family losses, she has said that she takes everything “in stride.”In 2020, at the age of 111, she survived Covid-19, a clear reminder of her strength and ability to adapt through the toughest times. Her family members continue to visit her at her care home in Surrey, where she now enjoys quiet days surrounded by affection. On her 116th birthday, Caterham received tributes from around the globe, including greetings from Guinness World Records. Her care home, Hallmark Lakeview Luxury Care Home in Surrey, described her life as “a true testament to strength, spirit, and wisdom.”While Jeanne Calment of France still holds the record for the longest verified lifespan at 122 years, Caterham’s story continues to inspire those who see life not just in numbers, but in the quiet choices that shape well-being.Disclaimer: This article is based on verified reports from Associated Press, BBC, Guinness World Records, and Hallmark Care Homes. India’s space story: Isro shows how Bharatiya Antariksh Station will look; to support space tourism

NEW DELHI: Isro unveiled a model of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) module, on the occassion of the national Space Day celebrations held at Bharat Mandapam on Friday. The BAS, which will be India’s first home-built space station, is set to have its first module launched by 2028. This will place India among a select group of countries operating orbital laboratories. At present, there are only two such stations in service, the International Space Station, run jointly by five space agencies, and China’s Tiangong space station.Under its long-term plan, India aims to assemble five modules of the BAS by 2035 as part of its ambitious space programme, PTI reported. The first unit, BAS-01, is expected to weigh 10 tonnes and will orbit at an altitude of 450 km above Earth. Standing 3.8 metres in diameter and 8 metres in length, the model of BAS-01 was the star attraction at the National Space Day event. The BAS will come with several key features. These include an indigenously developed Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS), a Bharat Docking System, Bharat Berthing Mechanism, automated hatch systems, platforms for microgravity research and technology demonstration, as well as viewports designed for scientific imaging and crew recreation. It will also provide refuelling capabilities for propulsion and ECLSS fluids, alongside radiation, thermal and Micro Meteoroid Orbital Debris (MMOD) protection. Other features include space suits, airlocks to support extra-vehicular activities, and plug-and-play integrated avionics. The BAS will serve as a research platform for studying space, life sciences, medicine and interplanetary exploration. It will enable scientists to observe the effects of microgravity on human health while testing technologies vital for long-term human presence in space. The station will also open doors to space tourism, with India planning to tap into the commercial space sector by leveraging the resources of its orbital lab.In addition to fostering international collaboration, the BAS is expected to inspire future generations to take up careers in space science and technology.
