South Mumbai Cement Road Tender: Month On, No Sign Of New Sobo Cement Road Tender | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Almost a month after terminating the Rs 1,687 crore Cement Concrete CC) road contract for south Mumbai and announcing that new tenders will be floated in 3 weeks, the BMC is yet to make any headway on that front.
With the existing contract of Roadways Solutions India Infra Limited (RSIL) terminated, road worksin South Mumbai are at a standstill.Municipal commissioner Iqbal Chahal had in November claimed that anew tender will be floated in three weeks, but the BMC has failed to meet that deadline with officials only saying that the new tender was under process.
Additional municipal commissioner (Projects) P Velrasu did not respond to a query from TOI.
BMC officials, however, said that it has forfeited RSIIL’s Rs 16 crore deposit and also issued a demand letter to recover the over Rs 51 crore penalty from the company.
Former BJP corporator Makrand Narwekar, who had first complained about the company failing to start works, said that October and November have passed but South Mumbai roads remain half dug up and unfinished. “It’s a shame that the BMC is still carrying out the process of floating the tender. The BMC claimed that a new tender will be floated in three weeks but it has failed to meet this deadline. We only have six months left of the fair season till June. The BMC must split the mega tender and float small tenders so that more contractors can come on board and the work can be completed,” Narwekar said.
Narwekar also demanded that the BMC not just blacklist the company, but also file an FIR against it for causing loss to the BMC and for public nuisance.
In a letter, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray asked Chahal if the company has been blacklisted and when the new road works will start. “Has the contractor terminated for South Mumbai’s road work scam been blacklisted as yet? The blacklisting should be made public, and all other states and cities be told. Has the contractor been made to pay the penalty that was due for his offence? Will the officers, including the municipal commissioner and the roads department, face any inquiry and action for such mismanagement and corrupt practices that eventually led to this action?… ” Aaditya asked in his letter to Chahal.
Narwekar said the BMC must permanently blacklist the contractor from all departments, not just in Mumbai but across Maharashtra. “BMC should recover the penalty amount of Rs 51 crore from the contractor immediately. I further demand that BMC file an FIR against the contractor and that a criminal investigation be initiated too,” he added.
